• Easy way of engaging non-programmers (i.e. designers) into using version control?

  What are some key ways of getting your team involved in using version control during development, web development or otherwise? I refuse to work without it, which means anyone involved in the project must also use it. It's just good practice. GUIs like Tower have helped, but the concept of it is either met with anger ('not my job!' kinda attitude), timidness, or just straight up not using it (using FTP instead, circumventing version control for say, dev or deployment). Edit: I should have clarified a little that I don't just mean images/PSDs.

  Our team is building an Angry Bird Style game, and we have only about ten days. The game is a little more complex than Angry Bird because there are two players, they each have a castle with pigs to protect(not destroy:)). And the goal is to destroy the other player's pigs. I wonder what Game Engine would help us finish this game most efficiently. We at least need a physics engine but I guess game engine is more helpful since it usually includes physics engine. Correct me if I'm wrong. (So I'm wondering which game engine I should use, if it's just physics engine, I'll use box2d) Networking may or may not be added later depend on time we have. • Exposing warnings\errors from data objects (that are also list returned)

  I'm exposing Data objects via service oriented assembly (which on future usages might become a WCF service). The data object is tree designed, as well as formed from allot of properties.Moreover, some services return one objects, others retrieve a list of them (thus disables throwing exceptions). I now want to expose data flow warnings and wondering what's the best way to do it having to things to consider: (1) seperation (2) ease of access. On the one hand, i want the UI team to be able to access a fields warnings (or errors) without having them mapping the field names to an external source but on the other hand, i don't want the warnings "hanged" on the object itself (as i don't see it a correct design). I tought of creating a new type of wrapper for each field, that'll expose events and they'll have to register the one's they care about (but totally not sure) I'll be happy to hear your thoughts. Could you please direct me to a respectful design pattern ? what dp will do best here ? Thank you very much!

  Hi, webmaster tools for my site displays that robots.txt unreachable and for all links in sitemap it says network unreachable. sitemap.xml unreachable. These appear in crawl stats page. I discussed with the support team of my hosting and they said... Hi, I have verified apache logs, i cannot see any issues on your website/webserver/ Possible issues. There may the routing issue from the googles server to our server. When a google bots hits goes high the IP will be automatically blacklisted by our firewall to avoid server loads & downtimes. As we donot have access to their services, We cannot able to give details of their details/logs etc. The sitemaps link shows an exclamation mark which means the file was not reachable. What could be the problem and how to solve it?

• On a queue, which end is the "head"?

  I had always thought that the "head" of a queue as the next element to be read, and never really questioned that usage. So a linked-list library I wrote, which is used for maintaining queues, codified that terminology: we have a list1_head macro that retrieves the first element; when using this library in a queue, this will be the first element to be removed. But a new developer on the team was used to having queues implemented the other way around. He described a queue as behaving like a dog: you insert at the head, and remove at the tail. This is a clever enough description that I feel like his usage must be more widespread, and I don't have a similarly evocative description of my preferred usage. So, I guess, there are two related questions: 1, what does the "head" of a queue mean to you? and 2, why do we use the word "head" to describe that concept?

Now that I am on my own forming a startup at home, my productivity is suffering because I miss having people I can talk to for specific help, inspiration and reality checks when working on a coding problem. I don't have access to business incubators or shared (co-working) office spaces for startups so I need to chat with people virtually. Where can I go for real-time chat with other programmers and developers (currently I'm looking for people developing for the web, javascript and python) for live debugging and problem-solving of the tasks I am working on? And what other resources can I use to get fellow programmer support?

On this panel this year we had Michael Wells from Raymond James, Joy Mathew and Venki Govindarajan from Comcast, and Serkan Karatas from Turk Telekom. Our panelists have a great mix of experiences and all are passionate about using Oracle Data Integration products to solve very complex use cases. Each panelist was given a ten minute to overview their use of our product, followed by a barrage of questions from the audience. Michael Wells spoke about using Oracle GoldenGate for heterogeneous real time replication from HP (Tandem) NonStop to SQL Server and emphasized the need for using standard naming conventions for when customers configure GoldenGate, as the practices is immensely helpful when debugging a problem. Joy Mathew and Venkat Govindarajan from Comcast described how they have used GoldenGate for over a decade and their experiences of using the product for replicating data from HP nonstop to Terdata. Serkan Karatas from Turk Telekom dove into using Oracle GoldenGate and the value of archiving data in extremely large databases, which in Turk Telekoms case resulted in a 1 month ROI for the entire project. • How can a student programmer improve his teamwork skill?

  I am a student right now. Recently, I am working in a project as a leader with three other students. Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. Do I help them solve coding problem or just encouragement? But if I pay too much attention on it, it would slow down my own progress. It is a not technical question, but it is very common in software development. I hope veteran programmers would give me some suggestions. Thanks!

• Is it good practice to analyse who introduced each bug?

  I used to analyse performance of programmers in my team by looking at the issues they have closed. Many of the issues are of course bugs. And here another important performance aspect comes - who introduced the bugs. I am wondering, if creating a custom field in the issue tracking system "Blamed" for reporting the person who generated the problem, is a good practice. One one hand it seems ok to me to promote personal responsibility for quality and this could reduce the additional work we have due to careless programming. On the other hand this is negative, things are sometimes vague and sometimes there is a reason such us "this thing had to be done very quickly due to a client's...". What to you think?
