• My code works in Debug mode, but not in Release mode.

  Hi, I have a code in Visual Studio 2008 in C++ that works with files just by fopen and fclose. Everything works perfect in Debug mode. and I have tested with several datasets. But it doesn't work in release mode. It crashes all the time. I have turned off all the optimizations, also there is no dependency to anything(in the linker), and also I have set these: Optimization: Disabled(/Od) Keep Unreferenced Data. Do Not Remove Redundant Optimize for Windows98: NO I still keep wondering how it should not work under these circumstances. What else should I turn off to let it works as in debug mode? I think if it works in release mode but not in debug mode, it might be a coding fault but the other way looks weird. isn't it? I appreciate any help. --Nima

• What web server should I use if I want to run Java code behind it?

  At the moment, I have lot's of Java which does all kind of nifty stuff and I'm happy with it. The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?

• How do I create an ImageView in java code, within an existing Layout?

  I'm looking for an easy way for the user to see how many drinks they've had for a BAC calculator. PICTURE OF THE APP, for reference On button press, I would like an image to be added to the screen, directly under the spinner and with left alignment. When I press the button again, I want another image to be added to the screen. So if I pressed the add beer button, a drawable of a beer would appear below the spinner. If I pressed the add beer button again, I want there to be TWO drawables of beers under the spinner, preferably with them being added from the right. (Also, having them reach their width limit, wrapping around, and starting again on the left, but below a full line, would be AWESOME) I can't figure out how to do this. I assume adding a ImageView in code to a relative layout (because it needs to be positioned to the right) would be the best route, but if it's possible in xml I'd be more than happy to use that. Any help?

• Sample source code for processing messages of a window created by an external program?

  I know I have to use SetWindowLongPtr with GWLP_WNDPROC and create my own WndProc that handles the message I want (such as WM_GETMINMAXINFO and modify the MINMAXINFO structure). However, because I want to do this for a window created by another program (like notepad.exe), I can't do this from my C#/WinForms program, I have to create a native C/C++ DLL that I have to inject in the the process that created the window. Can you provide a link or the sample code to do this (the native C++ DLL and the way to call it from C# and inject it into the external process)? Thank you

  I've thought about this before and this topic has often steered me away from Open Source projects. Recently DotNetPanel has changed it's name to WebSitePanel and gone Open Source. The rumor mill is speculating that Microsoft is behind this. My question (in multi-part) is quite simple. Can somebody please explain to me how quality assurance works on Open Source projects? How can a closed application get "only better" when Open Source? Doesn't the "too many cooks in the kitchen" theory apply when too many developers contribute (possibly bad) code to a project?

  I am not sure about the semantic of "ApplicationDirectory" membership condition. I am trying to use it in the .NET Framework 2.0 configuration tool. The tool's explanation to it is as below: The Application Directory membership condition is true for all assemblies in the same directory or in a child directory of the running application. Assemblies that meet this membership condition will be granted the permissions associated with this code group. All the other membership conditions such as strong name, hash, need me to input some criterias, only the Application Directory has not. How to use it? Could someone give an explanation by example? • VBA Macro On Timer style to run code every set number of seconds, i.e. 120 seconds

  I have a need to run a piece of code every 120 seconds. I am looking for an easy way to do this in VBA. I know that it would be possible to get the timer value from the Auto_Open event to prevent having to use a magic number, but I can't quite get how to fire off a timer to get something to run every 120 seconds. I don't really want to use an infinite loop with a sleep if I can avoid it. I'd like to do a few things slightly differently depending on which target is running. I can think of many ways to do this (#define something in the pch, check for existence of GUI definitions...).   The Windows _setmbcp function allows any valid code page... (except UTF-7 and UTF-8, which are not supported) OK, not supporting UTF-7 makes sense: Characters have non-unique representations and that introduces complexity and security risks. But why not UTF-8? As I understand it, the "ANSI" versions of the Windows API functions convert their arguments to UTF-16, call the equivalent "W" function, and convert any strings in the output to "ANSI". This is what I've been doing manually. So why can't Windows do it for me?

• How do people handle working with Code Names for their projects?

  Hi All, Recently we started using some code names for several different types of prototype applications all following a theme. This made things a little more fun and was a great idea. The problem is that Im not too sure how people deal with migrating a codebase from "codename" state into version 1.0 state which may have a proper name... not something that a client really shouldnt see :) We are using Visual Studio at the moment, and I can see that you can change the assembly name, but there are references to the namespaces, etc... that would really be a large change to make. Do people both changing things like namespaces before the v1.0 release?

• Why is my computer not showing a speedup when I use parallel code?

  So I realize this question sounds stupid (and yes I am using a dual core), but I have tried two different libraries (Grand Central Dispatch and OpenMP), and when using clock() to time the code with and without the lines that make it parallel, the speed is the same. (for the record they were both using their own form of parallel for). They report being run on different threads, but perhaps they are running on the same core? Is there any way to check? (Both libraries are for C, I'm uncomfortable at lower layers.) This is super weird. Any ideas?
