    he IncidentsTracker v1.2 System is a system that was developed to track Incidents happening in any particular country. It is incorporated with a maping component to enable end users search for places where an incident has happened, enter data about it and then produce reports.It's a Winforms software that was developed in a plugin style using C#  with an extensibility pattern/framework. It sits on an SQl Server backend but can also use any other databases prefered. Its Administrator just has to add the path where the database will be and it will autio create the database. This software was orignally developed to help UN Agancies and NGOs in thier work but can also be ustilised by other entities like the police, the human rights organisations, roads authority, etc etc. The development of a newer version(IncidentTracker v2) has been started in silverlight.   • SQL Auto Close Options

    Found an interesting thing that others have run across but it is the first time I’ve seen it. A customer emailed to say that the SQL 2008 db that I had helped him with seemed to be going into recovery mode on a regular basis while watching the SQL Management Studio screen. Needless to say he was a bit nervous and about to take some drastic steps. Eventually he found that the Auto Close option was set to true. When this is set to true, the database automatically closes all connections and unlocks the mdf file after 300 milliseconds. When a new connection is made it spins backup… Great for xcopy deployment on a client machine but not a multi-user server based application. So the warning… if you have started a database with SQL express and then move it to a production SQL server, make sure you check that the Auto Close option is set to false. See options screen below:

  • Doubt regarding search engine/plugin(One present on the website itself)

    I am new to web development and trying to study various types of websites as case study. Right now my focus is on how search engines works for an eCommerce website. I know basic functioning for a search engine, i.e. crawl web pages, index them and the display the results using those indexes. But I got little confuse in case of an eCommerce website. Don't you think that it would be better if a search engine instead of crawling the web pages containing products, it should directly crawl the database and index the products stored in the database? And when a user search for any product, it will simply give us the rows of the table which matches the user query? If this is not the case, can someone please explain how the usual method works on eCommerce website?

EUS can be easily configured during OUD setup. ODSM (the graphical admin console) can also be used to enable EUS for a new suffix.   • Would you consider using training/mentoring from LearnersParadise.com?

    My initial question deserves some explanation. I signed up for an account at learnersparadise.com. After signing up I couldn't login so I opted to use their "send password" feature. Upon receiving my password in my email I confirmed two things A) They trimmed off 2 of the last digits of my 10-digit password without informing me and saved it that way in their database B) my password is not saved in their database using a one-way hash since they were able to email me my password. I'm quite certain that both of these are perfectly awful programming practices. I suspect that the mentors/trainers at learnersparadise are not necessarily affiliated with the website and it's design since they are basically people like you and me (hopefully more skill than me) who have signed up to become mentors. However, I'm still uncertain about signing up for training/mentoring at a site that uses such poor programming practices themselves? Would you let learnersparadise poor programming practices affect your opinion of their trainers/mentors?

  • removing an ssrs instance from a scale-out deployment

    If you're like me you had at one time connected one of your Reporting Services instances to a report server database that was already in use by another instance.  This allows the instance to show up in the Scale-out Deployment section of the Reporting Services Configuration Manager.  My problem was that the server that got joined to the original server was no longer available as it had been repurposed, and when I clicked Remove Server to remove it from my scale-out it would fail because it couldn't contact the server.  After searching for a solution for quite some time I decided to look around in the report server database tables, and voila!  All I had to do was remove the old server from the Keys table.  I can't guarantee there won't be any side effects to this method, but it worked like a charm for me.

    Our product is a web based course managemant system. We have 10+ clients and in future we may get more clients. (Asp.net,SQL Server) Currently if one of our customers need extra functionality or customised business logic, we will change the db schema and code to meet the needs. (we only have one branch code base and one database schema) To make the change wont affect each others route, we use a client flag, which defined in a web config file, thus those extra fields and biz logic only applied to a particular customer's system. if(ClientId = 'ABC') { //DO ABC Stuff } else { //Normal Route } One of our senior colleagues said, in this way, small company like us can save resources on supporting multiple resources. But what I feel is, this strategy makes our code and database even harder to maintain. Anyone there crossed similar situation? How do you handle that?

    I have a USB key that contains my keepass2 password database and I'd like to perform some actions when it is plugged into my computer, namely: Auto-mount it to some specific location When the mounting is done properly, launching keepass2 on the password database file Simple tasks I guess, but I can't find how to do that. I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, and it auto-mounts the device as a "media usb-key" and tries to open the images on it (even though there are none). What is the best way to do that and to disable the ubuntu auto-mounting (so it doesn't conflict) ?

    Couple of years ago a reliable and decent performing Windows hosting was not affordable to many enthusiastic developers who want to try a startup idea or build a hobby site. I tried to start an ASP.NET website few years ago to provide services like – Mobile Tracing, Vehicle Tracing.   • Process Improvement and the Data Professional

    Don’t be afraid of that title – I’m not talking about Six Sigma or anything super-formal here. In many organizations, there are more folks in other IT roles than in the Data Professional area. In other words, there are more developers, system administrators and so on than there are the “DBA” role. That means we often have more to do than the time we need to do it. And, oddly enough, the first thing that is sacrificed is process improvement – the little things we need to do to make the day go faster in the first place. Then we get even more behind, the work piles up and…well, you know all about that. Earlier I challenged you to find 10-30 minutes a day to study. Some folks wrote back and asked “where do I start”? Well, why not be super-efficient and combine that time with learning how to make yourself more efficient? Try out a new scripting language, learn a new tool that automates things or find out ways others have automated their systems. In general, find out what you’re doing and how, and then see if that can be improved. It’s kind of like doing a performance tuning gig on yourself! If you’re pressed for time, look for bite-sized articles (like the ones I’ve done here for PowerShell and SQL Server) that you can follow in a “serial” fashion.   • Should I just always Convert.ToInt32 my integers to account for potential nullable integers?

    If my MSSQL database contains a data type that is NULL (i.e. null is allowed) then ORMs, such as EntityFramework in my case, create .NET objects that are nullable. This is great, and the way I use nullables is like this: C# int? someInt = 5; int newInt = someInt.Value; // woot VB.NET Dim someInt As Integer? Dim newInt As Integer = someInt.Value ' hooray However, recently I had to make a change to the database to make an Id field no longer NULL (nullable). This means that .Value is now broken. This is a nuisance if the Id property is used a lot. One solution that I thought of is to just use Convert.ToInt32 on Id fields so it doesn't matter if an int is nullable or not. C# int newInt = Convert.ToInt32(someInt); // always compiles VB.NET Dim newInt As Integer = Convert.ToInt32(someInt) ' always compiles Is this a bad approach and are there any alternatives?

    Some online strategy games have real time events. For example when you send troops to attack somewhere, the attack happens at the right time in the future. Checking the database again and again to get the list of attacks happening each second would cause heavy load. Is there any technique to achieve this goal? Another example: You want to attack a village 3 hours away, you send troops and the attack occurs 3 hours later. Should there be an script to check the database at each second to run the query at the specified time?

I am wondering whether Windows uses the concept of "Socket Buffer Size"? On Windows XP, the TCP window size is fixed. We can set it using the TCPWindowSize registry value. How about Socket Buffer Size? How can we set Socket Buffer size on Windows? Can we set it to a value different from TCP window size?

The naive solution is to just bump the SO_SNDBUF size to to something large. However, depending on the latency and the packet size that could be anywhere from 64K to 8MB. One of Vista's new features is TCP autotuning. Autotuning monitors the tcp connection and dynamically adjust the buffer sizes to allow for optimal communication. I would like to use auto tuning on our windows xp machine so I don't need to guess what my buffers sizes should be. Is there a way to install either a microsoft or 3rd party tcp autotuner on windows xp?

  • SQL Server Express Profiler

    During a recent project, while waiting for our Development Database to be provisioned on the clients corporate SQL Server Environment (these things can sometimes take weeks or months to be setup), we began our initial development against a local instance on SQL Server Express, just as an interim measure until the Development database was live.  This was going just fine, until we found that we needed to do some profiling to understand a problem we were having with the performance of our ORM generated Data Access Layer.  The full version of SQL Server Management Studio includes a profiler, that we could use to help with this kind of problem, however the Express version does not, so I was really pleased to find that there is a freely available Profiler for SQL Server Express imaginatively titled ‘SQL Server Express Profiler’, and it worked great for us.  http://sites.google.com/site/sqlprofiler/
