  We are converting a VB6 application to C# (4.0). and have come across a method in VB6 that we're battling to understand. • C# directory to "play with"

  Simple question here. I have a C# program which needs to stores some files onto the hard drive, but I don't need them to be anywhere useful to the end-user, only somewhere that the program can read/write from. Is there a directory that I can reference programmatically to be my "filespace playground" - that is, that I can read/write freely to and from? EDIT: Also, if I use a temp directory, how long are the files guaranteed to be there? I don't want the them to disappear while my program is still running!

• Parallel.For(): Different results for simple addition

  I'm just looking in to the new .NET 4.0 features. With that, I'm attempting a simple calculation using Parallel.For and a normal for(x;x;x) loop. However, I'm getting different results about 50% of the time (no code change). long sum = 0; Parallel.For(1, 10000, y => { sum += y; }); Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); sum = 0; for (int y = 1; y < 10000; y++) { sum += y; } Console.WriteLine(sum.ToString()); Surely I'm missing something simple or do not completely understand the concept. My guess is that the threads are trying to update "sum" at the same time. If so, is there an obvious way around it?

• Organizing c# code into different files

I've gotten to a point where my main code file is about a thousand lines long and it's getting un-manageable; that is, I'm starting to get confused and not know where to locate some things. It's well-commented but there's just too much stuff. I'd really like to be able to organize my code into different files, each with its own purpose. I want to get all the help VS gives me as I type when I edit these other files. A picture can say a thousand words: Is what I'm trying to do even possible?

  The problem is to learn computer to do addition. Computer have as input a knowladge of a numbers: he "knows" that after 1 goes 2, after 2 goes 3 and so on... Having that data computer can easyly get next number. Next, computer have knowlandge as input that x+0=x and x+(y+1)=(x+1)+y. This axioms let computer to do addition. For example, to add 5 and 3, computer makes following: 5+3 = 5+(2+1) = (5+1)+2 = 6+2 = 6+(1+1) = (6+1)+1 = 7+1 = 8. But this is too long to add numbers in such way. The problem is to develop program which can improve this way of addition using the rules of mathemetics and logic. The goal addition must executed in O(log(N)) time, not O(N) time, N is magnitude of added numbers. Have this program any science value? Is any program can do such things?

  I have not worked with SQL for quite a long time, and I need some help for a basic query. I have the three following tables: users (id, name) products (id, name) owners (userid, productid, date) One product can be sold by user A to user B and then back to A. Now, I want the list of all products currently owned by every single user with the date of transaction. Currently, my query is this one, but I'm stuck with old data (first association of one product to one user, and not the newest one): SELECT users.name, products.name, date FROM products JOIN owners ON products.id = owners.id JOIN users ON owners.id = user.id GROUP BY product.id Do you have some hints? • Optimal ASP.Net cache duration for a large site?

  I've read lots of material on how to do ASP.Net caching but little on the optimal duration that pages should be cached for. Let's say that I have a popular site with 50,000 pages. The content does not change frequently, so I could cache pages for up to an hour if I wanted. The server has 16 GB of RAM, but database connections are limited. How long should pages be cached for? My thinking is that if I set the cache duration too high (let's say 60 minutes), I will fill up memory with a fraction of the total content, which will continually be shuffled in and out of memory. Furthermore, let's say that 10% of the pages are responsible for 90% of traffic. If the popular pages are hit every second, and the unpopular ones every hour, then a 60 second cache would only keep the load-intensive content cached without sacrificing freshness. Should numerous but rarely-accessed content be cached at all?

  Hi, I'm trying to get better at C++ (I know a little). I'm working on character arrays. I found an exercise where the objective is to reverse a character array (after I convert it from an integer). I'm getting the following error (using VS2005): Run-Time Check Failure #2 - Stack around the variable 'revBuffer' was corrupted.   I happened to be working on a Singleton class in ruby and just remembered the way it works in factory_girl. They worked it out so you can use both the long way Factory.create(...) and the short way Factory(...) I thought about it and was curious to see how they made the class Factory also behave like a method. They simply used Factory twice like so: def Factory (args) ... end class Factory ... end My Question is: How does ruby accomplish this? and Is there danger in using this seemingly quirky pattern?

  A flipping coin on table will slow down and drop to the table surface, facing up or down. How can I calculate the flip-per-second declaration rate over time? For example, assuming the coin is at 10 flipping per second when it starts how long will it take to stop? For each second (9, 8, 7, 6 ... 3, 2, 1, stop), how is the flipping rate changed? Friction can be approximated as some real world objects (say, a metallic coin on a wooden table). Thanks!

  I am trying to put the following data from my for loop into a table formatted so that there are 11 values of F in each column, with a total of 4 columns. but I am always ending up with one long column of my data instead of the four columns I want. I was wondering if there is some way to put the data into a matrix and then reshape it, but I am having trouble.   I have tried multiple ways to have a single persistent timer update the ui in multiple activities, and nothing seems to work. I have tried an AsyncTask, a Handler, and a CountDownTimer. The code below does not execute the first Log.i statement....   Its been a long time since i've done C++ and I'm running into some trouble with classes referencing eachother. right now I have something like: a.h class a { public: a(); bool skeletonfunc(b temp); } ==================== b.h class b { public: b(); bool skeletonfunc(a temp); } since each one needs a reference to the other i've found I cant do a #include of eachother at the top or i end up in a weird loop of sorts with the includes. So how can I make it so that a can use b and vice versa with out making a cyclical #include problem. thanks!

• Does the API call ExitProcess() work OK in VB6 if you follow the MS caveats?

  Microsoft indicates that VB6 doesn't support ExitProcess (to exit and return a value). However, it indicates that this call can fail under certain circumstances (if a thread hasn't been completed, etc.) so I'm wondering whether this call will work OK (consistently :-) as long as you obey the caveats in the article. I could go a step further and call ExitProcess() from the Sub Main or Form which stared the app. Update: after some more reading (I really did research this a bit before asking ) I found a suggestion to use the TerminateProcess API instead. I'm investigating that option. Any thoughts?

• Help in restructuring a project

  I have a commerce application, asp.net mvc. I want it to be extensible in the sense others can create other payment providers, as long as they adhere to the interfaces. /blah.core /blah.web /blah.Authorize.net (Implementation of a payment provider using interfaces Ipaymentconfig and paymentdata class) Now the problem is this: /blah.core - PaymentData /blah.core.interfaces - IPaymentConfig where Payment Data looks like: using blah.core; public class PaymentData { public Order Order {get;set;} } IPayment data contains classes from blah.core like the Order class. Now I want to use the actual Authorize.net implementation, so when I tried to reference it in the blah.core project I got a circular dependency error. How could I solve this problem? Many have said to break out the interfaces into their own project, but the problem is PaymentData references entities that are found in blah.core also, so there doesn't seem to be a way around this (in my head anyhow). How can I redesign this?

• Submitting GET data with no input field?

  I've never really thought about this, but it helps with some security of something I'm currently working on. Is it possible to submit GET data without an actual input field, and instead just getting it from the URL? If so, how would I go about doing this? It kind of makes sense that it should be possible, but at the same time it makes no sense at all. Perhaps I've been awake too long and need some rest. But I'd like to finish this project a bit more first, so any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks

• Removing an element from an array (PHP)

  I want to remove an element from a PHP array (and shrink the array size). Just looking at the PHP docs, it seems this can be done using array_slice() and array_merge() so I am guessing (off the top of my head) that some combination of array_merge() and array_slice will work. However, array_slice() requires an index (not a key), so I'm not sure how to quickly cobble these functions together for a solution. Has anyone implemented such a function before?. I'm sure it must be only a few lines long, but I cant somehow get my head around it (its been one of those days) ... Actually, I just came up with this cheesy hack when writing up this question.... function remove_from_array(array $in, value) { return array_diff($in, (array)$value); } too ugly? or will it work (without any shocking side effects)?

  In PHP, if you have a variable with binary data, how do you get specific bytes from the data? For example, if I have some data that is 30 bytes long, how do I get the first 8 bytes? Right now, I'm treating it like a string, using the substr() function: $data = //... $first8Bytes = substr($data, 0, 8); Is it safe to use substr with binary data?   I'm having an issue reading byte in file after performing lseek long cur_position = lseek(fd, length * -1, SEEK_CUR ); // Rewind file reading by length bytes. printf("cur_position: %i\n", cur_position); int num_byte = read(fd, &byte, 1); printf("num_byte = %i\n", num_byte); With the initial variable length set to 34, the above code would produce cur_position 5 (so there are definitely at least 34 bytes after the lseek function returns), but the variable num_byte returned from function read always returns 0 even though there are still more bytes to read. Does anyone know the reason num_byte always return 0 or do I make mistake in the above code? Just for information, the above code was run on the following machine $ uname -srvpio Linux 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:52:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

• is it a bad idea to load into memory 160000 variables in a php script?

  im processing a large file with sentences, i only care about the lines that have english or japanese, so while im reading the file, if i find english or japanese sentence, i want to just save it in an array and after finished reading, open another file for writting and output all the sentences in the array. this would result in me setting about 160,000 variables. all strings, some short some long. just wondering if its a bad idea to for memeory to set so many values? example line from the file: "1978033 jpn ?????????????????????"
