• Dual Booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. Partition Sizes?

  I'm about to reinstall Windows, so I thought that I'd try Ubuntu out on a partition just for fun. My question is, how large should my partitions be for each of them? I know this various depending on what you use, so i'll give you a general idea of what I have, and what I have in mind. I'm currently running: Windows 7 Professional (64bit) RAM: 4GB CPU: 2.5Ghz Quad Core processor HDD: 500GB GPU: 1GB Nvidia GeForce I have around 130GB in Steam games, and some heavier applications like Photoshop CS6, Sony Vegas Pro 11. But other Applications I use are: Chrome Skype Dxtory Fraps OpenOffice BitTorrent and other assorted smaller programs. So, I was thinking that I would give my Windows partition about 150-200GB, my Ubuntu Partition around 20GB, and the rest to shared storage. I'm not really sure if I'd need more or less on Ubuntu, because I've never used it and I'm not really sure what kind of apps i'd be using over there. This would also be a clean install, so I'd be wiping my HDD, creating the Partitions in GParted, then installing Windows with Ubuntu following that. Any critique you could give me? Maybe explanations to what the /root, /boot and /home partitions I hear are about? Thanks in advanced if you actually read this lengthy thing! Any help is appreciated. (x

• Can I have a computer with 2 physical HDs, & Dual boot option, one for Windows & one for Ubuntu

  When my HD failed in my old computer with a dual core, I immediately went out and bought a new 6 core PC because I needed it for business and had to have an immediate solution. The old computer was otherwise a good computer. I don't want to spend a $100+ for a new operating system for the old computer because the Windows 7 Professional opperating system for the new computer will only allow one install. So, I decided to look and see if there were any free operating systems and found Ubuntu. I downloaded it and burned a live CD and would like to try it on the old computer. I found a 200 GB HD I can buy for $30 and the seller will format it any way I want. There are also other HDs available at a similar price. What I was thinking I would like to do is buy 2 HDs. Then I can have one formatted for Ubuntu 12.04 and install Windows XP Pro SP1 on the other HD for which I have the original installation CD. Then I would like to have a dual boot option so that when I power up the computer, I can choose whether to use Windows XP or Ubuntu. Is this possible? If so, how would I do it, that is, arrange it so a dual boot option presents itself on power up.

• 13.10 Saucy login issues; black screen, loop, and freeze

  Once upgraded to I 13.10 I was not able to get past the login screen. I had the black screen. Also; I can not log on with low graphics mode from recovery either. It makes no difference if I try default graphics driver or not. Then after running sudo install -f from recovery root prompt I got a login loop. I have purged fglrx, fglrx-legacy, and nvidia-current. I updated my repository with xorg-edgers and reinstalled nvidia-current. Now it semi-freezes at the login screen when I try to log on as my normal user. I say 'semi' because I can still use my mouse to click on the upper right hand Ubuntu logo and Shut Down or Restart the PC. I still cannot log on with my user name, but I can through the Guest login. While logged in as Guest I added a new user account with administrative privileges. I CAN log into this account without problem and from here am able to see that my .dmrc file in my original account reads: [Desktop] Session=XBMC I have changed 'Session=XBMC' to 'Session=ubuntu' and rebooted, but to no avail. The file resets itself and makes a backup of my changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• What relational database system should I learn? [closed]

  At the moment i know sqlite (my favorite), mysql (its ok, i get annoyed) and i do not want to learn ms/t sql (it only allows one nullable row if the column is unique). I am thinking about learning a new database system. My requirements for it is Must allow multiple connections at once (read and write) All or data i choose must be ACID compliant Performance should be good. I have a 17gb table in one project. It should perform well on read and transactional writes. With mysql it took hours to restore it and there were no foreign keys on that specific table. It only finished in a workday because i found a suggestion to adjust a setting which i think was key-buffer. And it still took hours Unique columns that allow more then one row to be null. I shouldn't have to say it but dammit MS. Allows one to make ongoing backups. Something like 'binary logs'. Some relatively small amounts of data i can grab and apply it to my local db to have it in sync with the one on the server. Table joins. I rather not write a bunch of queries to simulate a join What I would like but is not required Foreign keys. This may be a requirement later Open sourced Fair tool support. So i can measure queries, easily backup/restore, etc .NET and C (or C++) interface. (I seen one that uses raw tcp with JSON which was okish) Good subquery support. Once i was working with an older version of mysql (i believe <5.1 but it could have been 5.1) and i had to write many queries to do one query because it couldn't do subqueries. Or maybe it couldnt do it efficiently and died bc of memory limitations with a huge dataset. What db system should i learn?

• How to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual booting with Windows 7?

  I need to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from my laptop. It's currently dual booting with windows 7. I've searched and found some ways to do this, but all use some kind of a CD to complete the deletion. I have neither the Ubuntu Live CD nor Windows Install CD/Recovery CD. This laptop did not come with one, and I unfortunately have no available storage device to make a recovery CD. Is there a way to completely uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual booting without using any hardware? If there's no way, then how to uninstall using the least hardware possible? Or easy to find hardware? I've nothing against Ubuntu. I installed this as a backup/alternative to error-prone Windows 7. However, after a hardware upgrade, including extra RAMs and a new, better CPU, Windows 7 runs smoothly again. Now I'm running low on hard drive space and need the 40 gig or so of space I partitioned for Ubuntu back. Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

• All files gone after running fsck. How can I recover my files?

  I am a newbie in Linux. So this is my story I installed Ubuntu server 10.04lts. It worked great for many months, until today i decided to run fsck on the system partition and although it warned me, I kept pressing yes and now it will only boot into grub prompt. So i read some article and tried grub reinstall. But before performing grub reinstall, i decided to run fsck again from Ubuntu 10.04 lts for desktop live CD. The fsck painfully passes, now my drive is recognized as ext4 system and I am able to mount it again. However, all i can see is just boot directory and lost&found. I tried to perform grub reinstalling by doing grup-install stuff, now my grub is still not loading right, my files are missing, and the weird thing is that the amount I found used by boot and lost n found is only 5gb and the amount used in he hdd is 8 gb. So my files must be somewhere in the hdd. Is there any sinple way maybe a windows tool or something yo recover my files? I only need to retrieve my database backup and everything else can go. I am freaking out here. Please help.

• View the Time & Date in Chrome When Hiding Your Taskbar

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden. • Windows Defender Update KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0)? Killed My Live Discs

  Here's my problem, for those willing to read for about 2 minutes here's the entire story, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/bsod-after-windows-defender-update-kb915597/a4b5fca3-0274-47b4-97c4-61b34c4c4599, for those who want the short version here's what happened. After windows update automatically updated windows defender to kb915597, my computer starting getting bsods on shut down and start up and started experiencing problems withe the usb ports. So I decided to go to the microsoft answers site for help, I know that was probably my first mistake, so I followed their advice and they turned my computer into a large paper weight. Luckily I make physical backups of my c drive every few months and I have one from back in july, so I figured I'd boot up a ubuntu live disc, copy all my files from the past 2 months to a external drive and just copy the backup back to the c drive, that's where I ran into this problem. When I put in either a ubuntu or kubuntu disc, everything goes well, until it finishes the loading bar then when the OS would presumably start up, the computer resets, I've tried with ubuntu, kubuntu and gparted, and only gparted is able to get to the point where it starts up, but even then when I try to access the internet from it, the computer resets, and when I tried to copy the entire C drive partition to a blank external I wasn't able to. So I figured somehow maybe the C drive had something to do with it, so I unplugged the C drive so my computer was just a 2.8 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram, should have had no problem starting a live disc but the problem still continues. After doing some googling around I've found whenever windows gets a update with the title KB915597 it's pretty much the kill switch for windows, I've tried contacting microsoft tech support and even managed to directly contact a software engineer but as soon as I mention KB915597 they all just blew me off. I hope anybody who reads this has any idea how to fix this, I'm going to attempt to install ubuntu or kubuntu to a external drive using the same computer and see what happens now.

However, we'd like to hear from you. As we go around evangelizing SQL Azure at user groups, code camps, and SQL Saturday's, we see the range of "heard of it" to "experimenting with it". Very few are actually doing something with Azure. I'd like to know what your concerns/questions are regarding Azure.  More specifically, what functionality do you think is cool as well as what is lacking, and what would be your list of "must have's" to do something with Azure. We hear a lot regarding security concerns, lack of backup/restore, etc. Is there more? • How To Figure Out Your PC’s Host Name From the Command Prompt

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel. • SSD on USB 3.0 doesnt always mount

  I would like to ask you for some support for this issue. The SSD I use is apparently slightly damaged. Atm it shows this popular Corsair Series 3 problem. symptom: the disk is working for some minutes and then just suddenly stops. Two months ago it worked like a charm. This was my boot device in these days. So now I still need to copy some data out of the device which leads me to my question. Usually the SSD is working again for some minutes, when i unplug and replug its power. It gets detected by the system again and I can continue my backup. The problem on Ubuntu is, that it is not recognized again after two or three replugs. I have to reboot to bring it back. To specify this situation: when i unplug and replug my USB mouse before i reboot it is not recognized as well. So something seems to be wrong with the system also. my question: how do i fix this rebooting issue? I will post all the logs you need to analyse. The problem doesnt depend on the interface.   I’ve been meaning to start a blog for a while now, (OK, for several years…..) - finally now, here it begins First post, something really simple but, a wise-man once told me about the best way to improve SQL server performance. Store Less Data. That's it.. that's all there is to it... Over the years, I've seen the following :- -  a 200Gb database which held 3 days data. Once business requirements changed, we were able to hold only 1 days data in this database. -  a table developed by DBAs to hold application table cardinality information - that information was collected at 2 hour intervals every day for 7 years ! After 7 years the DBA space-info table had become the largest table in the database - 60 million rows !  It was a simple change to remove alot of the historical intra-day data and change the schedule to run only once per evening. Suddenly that table held 6 million rows instead of 60 million.... - lots of backup and restore history held in msdb. See this post by Brent Ozar for more details on this issue. Imagine how much faster the backups, DBCC Checks and reindexes ran when the above 3 changes were implemented ?   How often do you review your big databases \ tables to see if you’re actually holding only data that is really required by the business ?

• LiveCD/USB boot issues with Ubuntu 12.04 on blank drive

  Not sure how common this issue is, or even how badly I may be missing something simple, but I am a first time usuer having some serious problems. Some background: old HDD running Windows 7 developed too many bad sectors and is bricked. I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a fresh 1TB drive by booting from a liveCD USB flash drive. I've not been able to get past the initial menu screen, however, as the process stalls out shortly after selecting an option (both boot from drive and install to drive). I've tried multiple USB drives as well as CDs, modified the boot order, flashed BIOS, and even tried booting with only the flash drive and the keyboard connected with the same results.Typically what I observe is that the OS begins what I think is compliling, listing drivers and components before freezing on one. When the keyboard is plugged in, its the keyboard driver, before I flashed BIOS, it was a BIOS related item, now its an unknown entry. The computer seems to be reading the drive (idicated by USB light flashing or CD drive reving) for roughly 10 minutes with no progress, followed by the drives going quiet. Some spec info: Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro, BIOS version 2102 (latest version), Intel chipset CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz help would be appriciated!

• C++ Succinctly now available!

  Over the summer I worked with SyncFusion to create an eBook based off of my C# to C++ guide for their free Succinctly Series of eBooks. Today the result, C++ Succinctly, was published for download. It is a free (registration required; they make tools and libraries for .NET development so you might get an occasional email from them – I’ve been signed up for a few months and have had maybe 3 emails total so it’s not horrible super spam or anything ) and you can download it as a PDF or a Kindle .MOBI file (or both). I’m excited with how it turned out and enjoyed working with the people at SyncFusion. The book contains a total of 20 code samples, which you can download from BitBucket (there’s a link very early in the book). Almost all of the code is also inline in the book itself so that you don’t need to worry about flipping back and forth between your dev machine and your eReader (but if you want to try to understand a concept better, you can easily download the code, open it up in VS 2012, and play around with it to see what happens when you tinker with things). The code does require Visual Studio 2012 because of its expanded support for C++11 features and since I wrote all of the samples as Console programs for clarity and compactness, you will need a version that supports C++ desktop development (currently VS 2012 Pro, Premium, or Ultimate). Sometime this Fall, Microsoft will be releasing Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop which should provide a free way to use the samples. That said, I tested all of the samples with MinGW and only the StorageDurationSample will not compile with it due to the thread-local storage code. If you comment that out then you can compile and run all the samples with MinGW (or using a recent version of GCC in a GNU/Linux environment, or any other C++ compiler that provides the same level of C++11 support that Visual Studio 2012 does). I hope it proves helpful to those of you who choose to check it out!

• Should I be learning Linq, Direct SQL Commands (in .net), EF or other?

  Basically, I have a very good knowledge of plain old SQL coming from Classic ASP programming. Over the past couple of months, I have been learning C# and today was my first full day at MVC 3 (Razor) which I am loving! I need to get back in to Databases and I know that writing SqlCommand everywhere is obviously outdated (although it is nice I can still do it!). I used to go to a great usergroup as an IT Pro and the developer stuff went completely over my head, however I do remember a few things which kept coming up such as LINQ... However, that was some time ago and now the same people on Twitter are saying how out dated it is. I have tried to do research on both and I am clueless as to what direction I should go in, or when to use one over another (if learning both is a good thing). I am more so confused as I thought EF was a part of the .Net Framework, however, reading through the quick start guide, I had to download a component using Nuget. ... Basically I am out of my depth here and just need some honest advice of where to go!

• Cry Engine 3 vs UDK

  I'm new here and I hope that other people may find this question interesting. Me and a bunch of guys from my University are thinking about getting started in game development, but, even though the game design is kind of ready, we are stucked at the point "which Engine should we choose". At first, we were thinking about Unity3D Free, in particular because we are pretty familiar with C# and, even better, it's completely free, but on the other hand there are some cons like no dynamic shadowing that make the realization of our game kinda hard. So, we are thinking about moving either to UDK or Cry Engine, since they are not as expensive as Unity3D Pro (at least before the game deployment) . The thing we are worried the most, though, is that we are kind of scared about the support for team work(i mean, that we might find it hard to coordinate our efforts without software support), since in Unity3D the team features are part of purchasable content, and we are not interested in paying that much for a project we are not even sure we can complete. So, finally, I hope one of you knows the mentioned engines enough to give us a tip telling which one offers better team features and is advisable for guys that have barely worked before on videogames but have good object oriented programming skills. Probably might be helpful for your suggestion, if i say that our game is an exploration game. Thanks to anybody who's going to answer.

• Webmatrix The Site has Stopped Fix

  I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix. • Design in "mixed" languages: object oriented design or functional programming?

  In the past few years, the languages I like to use are becoming more and more "functional". I now use languages that are a sort of "hybrid": C#, F#, Scala. I like to design my application using classes that correspond to the domain objects, and use functional features where this makes coding easier, more coincise and safer (especially when operating on collections or when passing functions). However the two worlds "clash" when coming to design patterns. The specific example I faced recently is the Observer pattern. I want a producer to notify some other code (the "consumers/observers", say a DB storage, a logger, and so on) when an item is created or changed. I once heard a FP guru say that design patterns are there only because of the limitations of the language, and that's why there are so few in functional languages. Maybe this could be an example of it? EDIT: In my particular scenario I don't need it, but.. how would you implement removal and addition of "observers" in the functional way? (I.e. how would you implement all the functionalities in the pattern?) Just passing a new function, for example?

• Applying Service Pack 1 to Team Foundation Server 2010

  Disclosure:  I performed the following activities on my Windows 7 SP1 system, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and a local Basic installation of TFS 2010. As with any deployment of a service pack into a server environment, take your recommended precautions and be aware of the changes you are putting in.  With that said, make sure you backup your databases, and that you have an exit/rollback strategy in the event of an unexpected situation. Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 corresponds to KB2182621.  The KB article is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2182621 The process will be very simple to follow, you will need to execute the mu_team_foundation_server_2010_sp1_x86_x64_651711.exe file.  That will extract files needed and launch the wizard driven Installation. Once this process completes, you need to validate the changes. By looking at Team Foundation Server 2010 Administration Console, you should see the reference to the KB number and SP1. There is also a good reason to validate log locations and records. From the Team Foundation Server 2010 Administration Console. Or from Windows Explorer, go to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Team Foundation\Server Configuration\Logs location and review the logs referenced by the servicing references.

• I installed ubuntu, the installer told me to reboot afterwards. I dd, and now linux wont boot

  Im trying to dual boot between mac 10.6.8 and ubuntu 11.10. I have a macbook pro 8,1. So i installed from a 10.04 disk because the install window makes more sense to me, and it doesnt give me errors or anything. Also, any versions of ubuntu after that dont boot from disk for whatever reason. (i think its having to do with the efi boot thing. i have to get ubuntu 11.10 to boot from a usb with folders bootefiboot.iso) Then my plan after that was after the ubuntu 10.04 install took care of all the swap and stuff for me without being messy, to upgrade to 11.10. So here i have 10.04 booting successfully back and forth from mac osx no problem. I put in my 11.10 usb and the installer gives me the option to "update 10.04 to 11.10" bingo, jackpot, thats what i want. Everything proceeds as normal, as EVERY OTHER install of ubuntu i have ever done, then the installer finishes and says HEY! im finished! Continue testing or reboot now! So i reboot, and what do i get??? A black screen that says the file system isnt found, to enter a boot disk and press any key. WHAT THE HELL????? so i boot the 11.10 installer again from usb, and select "erase 11.10 and install 11.10", installer proceeds normally, and asks me to reboot. I reboot and get the SAME THING. Please, someone, help me get this right here. This is my first time actually dual booting between mac and linux. Usually i just wipe off osx completely and install ubuntu but i actually need to keep my mac partition this time. I have successfully installed 11.10 on this machine before, but that was when i did a clean install. Help?

• Is using SVN for development and CM a bad practice?

  I have a bit of experience with SVN as a pure programmer/developer. Within my company, however, we use SVN as our configuration management tool. I thought using SVN for development at the same time was OK since we could use branches and the trunk for dev, and tags for releases. To me, the tags were the CM part, and the branches/trunk were the dev part. Recently a person, who develops high level code (but outside of the "pure SW" group) mentioned that the existing philosophy (mixing SVN for dev and CM) was wrong... in his opinion. His reasoning is that he thinks the company's CM tool should always link to run-able SW (so branches would break this rule). He also mentioned that a CM tool shouldn't be a backup utility for daily or incremental commits. Finally, he doesn't like the idea of having to jump from revision 143 to 89 in order to get a working copy... and further that CM tools shouldn't allow reversion to a broken state. In general he wants to separate the CM and back-up/dev utilties that SVN offers. Honestly, I am new and the person with this perspective is one of seniority, experience, and success, so I want to field this dilemma with the stackoverflow userbase to see if his approach has merit. My question: Should SVN be purely used for development, and another tool for CM (or vice versa)? Why? If so, what tools would you suggest for this combo? Or do you think that integrating both CM and dev into SVN is the best approach? Why? Thanks.

• Where to find common database abbreviations in Spanish

  I'm doing a little pro bono work for an organization in Central America. I'm ok at Spanish and my contacts are perfectly fluent but are not techincal people. Even if they don't care what I call some fields in a database I still want to make as clean a schema as possible, and I'd like to know what some typical abbreviations are for field / variable names in Spanish. I understand abbreviations and naming conventions are entirely personal. I'm not asking for the "correct" or "best" way to abbreviate database object names. I'm just looking for references to lists of typical abbreviations that would be easily recognizable to a techincally competent native Spanish speaker. I believe I am a decent googler but I've had no luck on this one. For example, in my company (where English is the primary language) 'Date' is always shortened to 'DT', 'Code' to 'CD', 'Item' to 'IT', etc. It's easy for the crowds of IT temp workers who revolve through on various projects to figure out that 'DT' stands for 'Date', 'YR' for 'Year', or 'TN' for 'Transaction' without even having to consult the official abbreviations list.
