• Not able to find IIS Manager and enable IIS in Windows7 Home Basic

  I enabled IIS services in the add/remove windows components. However, when i want to open the manager, the IIS Manager does not appear under the administrative tools on the control panel. If i type the shortcut "inetmgr" into the run block it doesn't find it. However, i know the service installed correctly. It is a very frustrating problem since everyone says find it here or here but no one gives any help on what to do if is doesn't appear in the said locations at all. Can anyone please help me? The system i am using is Windows 7 home basic. The service installed correctly but i cannot find the IIS Manager.

• [MINI HOW-TO] Create Keyboard Shortcuts to Applications in Windows

  Do you need just one or a few special keyboard shortcuts for your favorite program(s)? A quick modification to program shortcuts will get you up and running without installing additional software. Creating New Keyboard Shortcuts Go to the start menu shortcut for the program, right-click on it, and select properties. When the properties window opens click in the shortcut key text area. All that you need to do is choose an appropriate letter for the program (i.e. O for Opera, E for Editra, etc.) and type it in the blank. You will not need to type any other keys or combination in…the “Ctrl + Alt +” will be automatically entered for you as soon as you type the letter in. Click OK to finish creating the new keyboard shortcut. Those new keyboard shortcuts will speed up access to your favorite software. Another example from our system using “I” for Iron Browser. Certainly much quicker than using the start menu. Conclusion If you only need one or just a few special keyboard shortcuts then this method provides a quick and simple solution. • I can't add PPA repository behind the proxy (with @ in the username)

• [Resolved] Finishing the install of php-xmlrpc on a VPS

  Hi, please help if possible: 1) I was able to completely install php-xmlrpc on a different VPS which uses lxAdmin control panel, without even needing to rebuild php. 2) On a VPS with Direct Admin, I followed detailed instructions (found at the DA site), this included rebuilding php, and after reboot, xml/rpc still doesn't show up in phpinfo.php. Details: centOS 5.3 php5.2.10 php-xmlrpc is installed on the VPS, and the installation "success" was confirmed at the time. Several days later, PHP was rebuilt following detailed instructions (for adding extra modules) provided by direct admin at their site. In the end, xml/rpc still doesn't show up in phpinfo.php. Anyone know how to make this work with Direct Admin? Thank you.

The agenda featured an introduction by Ray Wagner, Managing VP at Gartner, followed by Amit discussing the trends in Identity and Access Management shaping Oracle's strategy. • IE Kerberos failure on some machines with CNAME web server (with SPN for host's A record)

  It's fairly well known that IE doesn't like to do Kerberos against hosts that are registered in DNS as CNAMEs. What happens is that IE turns around and uses the underlying A record for the host for looking up the Service Principal Name (SPN). On a test network we are able to get Kerberos working by having the SPN registered for the A record of the host, so that Kerberos authentication happens successfully when accessing the web server via it's CNAME in the browser. Kerberos authentication works properly when directly accessing the web server with the A record host in the URL, but for various reasons that are beyond my control, it is desired to use the CNAME. On the production network, this same configuration fails though and I can't figure out why. Any thoughts? This is a java web application using the SPNEGO library - not IIS. Kerberos authentication is working properly in both the test and production networks (and has been confirmed to not fail back to NTLM), but the CNAME access only works in test.

• Cannot uninstall Office Live Add-in 1.4 after installing Office 2010

  Last night I upgraded to Office 2010 RTM from MSDN. I'm now trying to uninstall the Office Live Add-in that I used with Office 2007 as this functionality is built in to Office 2010. When I run the uninstall from control panel I get the following message: Microsoft Office Live Add-in cannot be installed because you do not have the right version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer Google has pointed to 2 solutions, both of which are pretty useless: Use the MS Windows Installer Cleanup - this is not good because all it does is remove the Installer entry from the registry, leaving all the installed files behind Uninstall Office 2010, uninstall Add-in, reinstall Office 2010 - that is just rediculous, but typical MS response So, can I get this off my system without resorting to option 2?

• How do I obtain a valid DNS resolution given just an IP address?

  Is there a publicly-available DNS server somewhere that will respond to requests like: 74_125_225_50.anyip.com And will return 74.125.225.50 for the above request? That is, every single possible IP address can queried by name instead of number. http://ipq.co/ is close to what I'm looking for, but it requires you to first register an IP address before you can query its DNS name. I want a service that does a straightforward mapping from domain name to IP address. Why do I want to do this? I have a program that we use at work that requires a DNS lookup, but I need to be able to give it bare IP addresses. (long story... it's a server that I don't control, so I can't work around it using /etc/hosts)

• How to config DLink DSL-2640T to allow access from DynDNS route to specific port on my PC?

  Hi, everyone. I think you can help me out from this little problem. I am trying to setup an Apache web server on my PC and let the other remotes to this machine via DynDNS.com. I found that DLink DSL-2640T make me confuse about how to configure the routing from http://myhostname.dyndns.org:80 to 192.168.1.13:80. At the moment when I browse the URL http://myhostname.dyndns.org, it will lead me to router's admin control panel. Could you help me out by giving your guideline or suggestion?

• What is causing a vm to exhibit packet loss?

  We have a pretty nice piece of hardware set up to run multiple virtual machines in vmware and one of the vm's is an instance of Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2005. For some reason we occasionally see 10-20 seconds of straight packet loss to this machine from remote machines (my workstation) as well as other vm's on the same physical hardware. I am using PingPlotter to keep a close eye on the packet loss. So far we've turned off flow control on the NIC but we are already running out of other things to try. What might be causing this and how can I identify the problem? Note: We also have another server with a very similar configuration with the same type of problem to a lesser extent (because its not used as heavily?)

• /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed

  Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

• ERROR 0x8007007A when trying to schedule a task

  I am getting the error "The data area passed to a system call is too small. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007A)" when trying to create a scheduled task on a particular windows machine. The problem description is identical to that described in this Microsoft KB article I followed their steps to resolve: Stopped the task scheduler service (right-clicked "Task Scheduler" in the Services window from Control Panel and selected "Stop"). Restarted the task scheduler service Waited 15 minutes tried to schedule the task. But the error is persisting. To give more context of how we are creating these scheduled tasks, they are actually generated automatically from a configuration script (we run the script each time we wish to make a change). Each time this happens, it deletes all of the existing tasks and creates new ones. I don't know what else to try.... but surely there is some way to "reset" the task scheduler... How can I stop this error from happening.

• Observable Collections

  I didn't think it was possible, but .NET surprised me yet again with a cool feature I never knew existed: The ObservableCollection. This became available in .NET 3.0. In essence, an ObservableCollection is a collection with an event you can connect to. The event fires when the collection changes. As usual, working with the .NET classes is so ridiculously easy, it feels like cheating. The following is small test program to illustrate how the ObservableCollection works. To start, create an ObservableCollection and then store it in the Session object so it will persist between page post backs. As mentioned earlier, this implies that the notification event is in a thread separate from the IIS thread. Another interesting note: From the online help: Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe What does that mean to Asp.Net developers? • Is there a blog tool with support for tagging posts, only displaying posts with certain combinations

  What I want: A blog. I can tag posts, e.g. "A" or "B" or "all," and then you can either 1) click to only view posts tagged "A" or "all" or 2) even more ideally, I can set it so you automatically see posts tagged "A" or "all" when you log in. LaTeX support--I can type in LaTeX in the editor and it will show the math properly. No anonymous anything--must sign up and be logged in to view and comment Not as important, but convenient: Admin controls, e.g. detailed statistics, see who posts or views what when, control who posts / views, etc. Hosting: Ideally, if there's some software I can install on "my" own server, that would be ideal. But if we can't host it, it'd still be good to find some free (or maybe even paid) service elsewhere that would host the blog if it provided those tools. Any thoughts? I have no experience with this. • CheckPoint VPN-1 SecureClient inability to navigate behind a Linksys WAG300N

  I have a Linksys WAG300N, I'm accessing my LAN with Wifi and everything works fine on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. When I try to connect to my company's VPN the connection succeeds, but I cannot access any internet site either within my work network or public site like Yahoo or Google. In my Linksys control panel I already verified all types of VPNs are enable to passthrough. Normal IPSec and Windows VPN worked in the past without any problems. CheckPoint seems to have a solution, but I do not have the ability to change the IP in my client and of course using another NAT device in between is not a solution for me. • IIS7 returns 403.1 (execute access denied) for image file

  I have a web app running in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008. There is a virtual directory pointing to a shared folder "/Content/Data" on another machine (running Windows Server 2003), as well as a real directory "/Content/Images" on the local machine (web app sub folder). Accessing images in "/Content/Images" is no problem, but when an image (e.g. a JPEG file) in the "/Content/Data" is accessed by a browser, IIS returns this error: HTTP Error 403.1 - Forbidden: Execute access is denied. However, the web app can read and write to / from it. I assume IIS and ASP.NET are running under different user accounts? Does anyone have an idea on what I have to do to make it work? I have set the permissions on the shared folder to Everyone Full Control, with no luck.

• Google CDN or Akamai

  We combine and minify our JS with Minify - the combined JS is then cached on Akamai. I'm suggesting to my supervisor that we put JQuery and JQueryUI on Google CDN and take it out of our combined JS. The benefits I see are parallel downloads, significantly smaller Akamai cache hit, and the high potential the user will have JQuery from Google CDN cached in his/her browser when he/she visits our site so no download will be required at all. I also pointed out how pointing to the major version CDN URL //ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js will eliminate the need for us to micro-manage our JQuery version control, and that if a new release introduces a bug, we simply point the CDN URL to a stable minor version of our choice until the issue is resolved. My supervisor disagrees and thinks keeping it on Akamai is the way to go. Any insight as to which is going to be faster here? I looked for some benchmarks and references online but they are either out-dated or merely talk about Google wanting to acquire Akamai. EDIT: Some further research has pointed me to an article mentioning how 'latest version' CDN URL's use short expires headers so it might be more optimal to use /jquery/1.7/. I'm fine with this - the general question still remains.

• Router behind router network setup

  My relative has bought a router instead of a switch which causes remote-access control issues on his network. His existing network has a 1st router where all PCs are connected via LAN cables. The 2nd router connnects to the 1st router and the remaining PCs are connected to the 2nd router via LAN cables. Normally, I would perform remote-access to help him out with some task. Now it seems all services behind the 2nd router are unavailable to me. How can I resolve this issue?

• Fun with RadCaptcha for ASP.NET AJAX and OCR software

  A friend of mine was evaluating OCR software and finally decided to go with FineReader. I was curious what would happen if we put the RadCaptcha control in. Will the advanced OCR manage to decode it or not? At first he showed me a test run with the RadCaptcha demo description, to get an idea of the basic output:    Naturally, the captured description text was no problem - only a few characters were misread but then corrected with the spellcheck. Next, the real test was performed:    These were only a couple of the results, but there is no need to post the rest of the tests - none of the RadCaptcha images were recognized by the OCR software. • Redirect example.com to www.example.com VPS & Apache2

  I have a VPS and a domain name registered with the provider. When I enter www.example.com my site is displayed correctly, but entering example.com does not work. I am able to ping www.example.com. I added the following line to my apache2 default vhosts file: ServerName example.com ServerAlias www.example.com But this did not work. The VPS is a Debian5 OS. Any ideas? Note: There is no option via a provided control panel to add this, it's a basic package I purchased I know this post answers it but there are no extra comments and I'd like to know if it's the best way: way to redirect page to www using virtual host configuration in sites-available for apache2? Thanks

• Residual packages Ubuntu 12.04
