• Error in mounting HDD

  I am getting the following error whenever I mount my external HDD. It was working before and then I opted for safely removing the drive. Now its giving me following error Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup_warn: magic: 0x43425355 size: 4096 usa_ofs: 8850 usa_count: 65535: Invalid argument Actual VCN (0x800006009000000) of index buffer is different from expected VCN (0x0). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.

• Windows Vista: Folder options not working

  I'm running Windows Vista Service Pack 2. I have the Folder Options set to "Open each folder in the same window." (Organize | Folder Options | General). Each time I open a folder, it opens in a new window. How do I get it to open each folder in the same window? I have tried the following techniques with no success: 1. Expand number of MBAG entries in Registry. (The number is 40,000 now.) 2. Delete Bags and MBAG entries in Registry. (Rebooted machine after, still no success). 3. Change to "Open each folder in its own window". Saved, then changed back. 4. Under View tab, changed "Remember each folder's view settings": unchecked, Apply to Folders, checked, Apply to folders. 5. Applied application from Annoyances.org. Still no success. 6. Clicked on Reset Default Options, then OK. (Opening in same fold is a default option!) Still unsucessful. I want the folders to open in the same window, just like the options say.

• Silent install FirePro v4900 Driver on Windows Embedded 7 Standard

  I'm trying to install the Drivers for a FirePro v4900 on a Windows Embedded 7 Standard 64bit OS. I want the system to be as small as possible, so i would rather not install the whole catalyst control center, but only the necessary drivers. Because the installation should be accomplished absolutely unattended, the installation process of the FirePro-Driver should also be done without any user interaction. I see two possible solutions for the Problem: Install only the Drivers: Is it possible to solely install the necessary drivers? How would i achieve that? This solution would be the preferred one, because of the smaller footprint. Silent custom install the provided "FirePro_8.911.3.3_VistaWin7_X32X64_135673.exe" (found at ATI FirePro™ Driver). Is there a way, to do that? Thank you in advance for your support! Update: I managed to accomplish a silent installation. I extracted the contents of the above mention installer-file and ran \$_OUTDIR\Bin64\Setup.exe -Install. (There are some other Parameters, just run Setup.exe /?). But i couldn't achieve to just install the drivers without the Cataclyst Control Center, and it seams the Control Center has some unfulfilled dependencies and so it crashes...

• windows clients cannot get dns resolution until you open and close ipv4 properties page

  This strange problem has started recently. Some windows clients cannot seem to get dns resolution to the internet after boot, and sometimes again at some point in the day. Internal hosts are also slow to resolve. trying to ping an interal host by name will take a long time for the hostname to resolve to ip address and trying to ping a website by name will fail to resolve. If you go into the tcp/ip v4 properties and view but not change anything, ok/close out of that then the client starts working fine, hostnames will resolve quickly. I have seen this happen on both Vista and W7 clients. ipconfig /all at a client experiencing this problem shows everything in order. proper ip addr, gateway, dns server, dns suffix ect.. ipconfig /dnsflush will not fix them, neither will /release and /renew the clients get their ip address, mask and dns server info from either one of 2 OES dhcp servers that assign addresses in different scopes in the same subnet. the internal dns server is a different OES dns server the default gateway is not assigned by the OES server but is statically put in at the client (only for those who need to get to the Internet for their job) flat network topology What can I do to get to the bottom of this? It only happens to a few of the client machines and typically the same ones. It started happening when we made a change to one of the DHCP scopes in iManager. Strangly this problem only happens to clients that get an IP address from the scope that we didn't make any changes to.

Now following instructions on web I tried to add Ubuntu to my BIOS using Easy BCD (but forget to add windows 7 entry). As a result, I loose windows 7 OS and can't boot in to either OS then I successfully repaired windows 7 using recovery CD. Now my problem is that I can't reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 using Live CD it halts every time before disk partition step giving error. There is only one partition which corresponds to windows 7 but I don't know whether the Ubuntu is still there or probably corrupted. So, how to repair it or again install ubuntu ? • Slow boot for OS and external devices

  I have been having this problem intermittently but as of yesterday, it has become more consistent. It originally started when I rebooted my PC at home and the OS (Windows 8) sat in a loop appearing to do nothing while loading. I figured since this was a new installation, that something may have just become corrupted and I decided to reinstall. So I tried to boot off of the thumb drive which had the installation iso and encountered pretty much the same issue. Same with the DVD drive. So, I rebooted once again and left it to load the entire night just to see if it ever would and sure enough this morning, Windows had finally loaded. Authentication had the same roblem albeit not quite as long (took about 5 minutes to authenticate). However, once I was in, everything appeared to be working fine and as quick as normal with the exception of when I tried to scan the C drive for any errors, which ran unbearably slow (45 minutes and before I left for work and was not finished scanning a 64GB SSD drive). I mention that I have had this issue but never when loading the OS. Before it occurred when trying to install windows 7 from a different DVD drive than the one I have now. It took me about 3 hours to do it since I had to wait sometimes 30+ min for each step to finish processing. Does anyone have an idea as to what can cause this? I am assuming it is the motherboard since it is responsible for communication with all the devices I'm having issues with but I cannot find anyone else who has had a problem like this and don't want to drop more money on a MB if it isn't the problem. • Windows 2008 64bit: applications and explorer always hang

  I setup a couple of Window 2008 64bit systems about 5 months ago. Initially all seemed well. Now however, for no apparent reason, things are dog slow, apps hang, explorer hangs, just clicking on something can cause a CPU spike of 100%, and often it's explorer that is eating it up. As I have two on identical hardware, and they experience the same problem, it doesn't seem related to addon software. The only thing these have in common is Kaspersky and I've tried disabling/uninstalling to no avail. There are no useful error messages in the event logs. Actually, the system never even reports app hangs. Sometimes, it similar to what I've seen on Windows 7 systems where the screen goes milky and asks if I want to trouble shoot, that's only when get impatient and click happy. The really odd thing, is that it will NOT do this for a few minutes at a time, and then starts up again. Like I will click on the start menu and browse for the Admin Tools, the start menu will hang at some point and I'll have to wait about a minute, then it's OK. The next time I do this, a few seconds later, it's fine. Every click seems to hang the first time around, then be ok the second time if I do the exact same thing. If anyone has any suggestions, please PLEASE let me know! thanks =)

• Windows Server 2008 (Web Server) Replication

  We have a load balanced environment with Windows Server 2008. What are some best practices to setting up replication across the web servers? Do I only want to replicate the web folders? How about replicating IIS changes - or do I need to make IIS changes on every server? I've never, ever set up replication, but I have worked with a web farm that used it before. Basically, I only know the basics about how it works, and am looking for any advice, guides, warnings, etc on setting this up. If you'd like to offer any advice, I'll let you know how our environment is for now. We have 1 prod server up and the second is nearly ready to go. We are using a cloud system and all machines are VM's. I am in the process of setting up the domain controller now (as I need to have one for DFS). Any ideas on the best way to go about setting up replication? Should we just stick the prod server in from the start or set up using a test VM and our second server and then switch it up later? I do not want to risk overwriting our prod server. Thanks!

• Windows Home Server backup recovery missing driver for USB Device

  I'm doing a backup recovery of a Windows 7 PC from the backup on Windows Home Server. I've done this before and am accustomed to the prompt to load drivers for devices such as the NIC from a USB flash drive, which I have all loaded up with the drivers from the special folder in the WHS backup repository for this PC. My problem on this PC is that one of the drivers the recovery CD complains is missing is "USB Device", and it fails to find the drivers when I click the button to scan for and install drivers. So it seems it can't access the USB flash drive to load the other drivers. Any suggestions? I think my next step is to pull a DVD drive from another system and plug it in with a CD burned with the device drivers.

• Black Screen on Logon (windows 7 home premium)

  i have been having some trouble with a dell Xps 15 laptop that i recently purchased. it is under a month old, and a problem has occurred, upon logging on just after start up, the computer will just sit on a black log on screen (with the mouse still visible and active) for a few minutes. it is extremely annoying, especially when im in a rush. the laptop is under a month old. So far, i have tried to update the drivers, all windows update, and still, nothing. also, it doesnt seem to do it when i log into safe mode, or if it does, it will do it for less than 10 seconds, then load the desktop (in normal boot, it usually takes a few minutes). i have also run a number of the inbuilt diagnostics, but found no errors. i want to avoid having to do a system restore for as long as i can. does anyone know anything that can help? (the laptop is running a 500gb SSD, 2gb Nvidia 640m, 8gb ram, 3rd gen i7 quad core with 8 threads) thanks.

• Feasibility of Windows Server 2008 DFS replication over WAN link

  We have just set up a WAN link that connects two buildings in our organisation. The link is provided by a 100-Mbps point to point line. We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller on each side of the link. Now we are planning to set up DFS for file services across the organisation. The estimated data volume is over 2 TB, and will grow at approximately 20% annually. My idea is to set up a file server in each building and install DFS so that all the contents stay replicated over the 100-Mbps link. I hope that this will ensure that any user will be directed to the closest (and fastest) server when requesting a file from the DFS folders. My concern is whether a 100-Mbps WAN link is good enough to guarantee DFS replication. I've no experience with DFS, so any solid advice is welcome. The line is reliable (i.e. it doesn't crash often) and our data transfer tests show that a 5 MB/sec transfer rate is easily achieved. This is approximately 40% of the nominal bandwidth. I am also concerned about the latency. I mean, how long will users need to wait to see one change on one side of the link after the change has been made on the other side. My questions are: Is this link between networks a reliable infrastructure on which to set up DFS replication? What latency times would be typical (seconds, minutes, hours, days)? Would you recommend that we go for DFS in this scenario, or is there a better alternative? Many thanks.

• 12.10 does not boot sometimes from the hard drive, but it does consistently from the CD

  I have recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10. I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 and I cleared everything from my computer, but it randomly stops at different screens. Only a purple screen comes up. I can choose Ubuntu from a list and a blinking white dot appears in the top left corner. The previous things happen and the Ubuntu login screen appears an I can log in. It is random. and I have not changed anything. I can always insert the bootable CD and it will work every time.

• Windows 7 64bit will not register a 32bit DLL

  I'm trying to install a 32bit Oracle instant client onto several Windows 7 PCs. This version is the one required by the customer's software. I have successfully installed it on about a dozen PCs using the same installer, but two machines refuse to register a DLL. The two PCs are of different make and model. I have been able to install this software in the past on these models. This is the error that the installer throws up: The file copies to the location referenced above. If I choose to ignore the error and manually register it later, I get the following error: This error is returned whether I use the 32bit (syswow64) or 64bit version of regsvr32. Command Prompt is run as admin, and the ID with which I'm logged into the PC is an admin. I've tried copying the file into the syswow64 folder, but I get the same error. This same installer works on other PCs. To further complicate the issue, one of the two PCs also will not register an OCX file from a different 32bit installer: Both PCs are relatively new and have standard software installed. We use MS Forefront for security, but disabling that didn't change the behavior. What am I missing?

  Restoring Windows 2008 Server (Domain Controller) We are using Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to Image our DC. Now this software has a feature to convert the backup into a vmware or hyper-v VM I have also used disk2vhd to convert one of our dc's to a vhd and when I connected it into Hyper-V, it booted fine, I can login - BUT :-) As soon as I login, I get the activation error, that change product key, this product key isn't good for this machine etc. Question is : When in a real recovery situation, what would be the procedure to restore it either virtual or onto a physical box but be able to login and change product key etc ? In this scenario its just locked down and I cant' do anything, if this is the case, how would I replicate my production environment via these tools ? Any Ideas ? Will be grateful for some real world examples here. Same thing happens with our exchange backup / test restore either physical or virtual, can login but nothing else. Now we don't have the keys as they are OEM keys and just wondering what will happen in a real scenario, would we be purchasing another KEY or using the OEM key on our new server ? This is a test environment I am trying to create by restoring our backups either into hyper-v or physical test machines. Also, If I build up a machine (Server 2008) in a VM (Hyper-V), How can I restore just the system state backup of my DC into it ? will that give me the activation error too ? even though I would use the TRIAL ISOs provided by Microsoft ? • Fixed Resource Monitor Graph Scale in Windows Server 2008 R2

  In Windows Server 2008 R2's Resource Monitor, is there a way to set the scale of the various graphs to be constant values instead of variable based on data? It seems to me that the utility of a graph is to get a quick overview glance at the values those graphs are showing. So if I look at the CPU graph and the line is up near the top, I can know immediately that something is using all my CPU and go investigate what. I don't really care if the CPU is jumping between .01% and 2%. Or if the network usage monitor is up near the top, I will know that all my bandwidth is being used up, and go figure out what. But the way things are now, the graphs are meaningless because the scales constantly shift. If you look at the network usage graph in one second it might have a scale out of 100kbps, and the next second have a scale based on 1mbps! So... is there a registry key or something that will peg the scale of these graphs to logical maximums?

  I've lost the original USB cable for my Kodak EasyShare Z740, and I can't figure out which model I should replace it with. I did not find the original parts, as the camera is pretty old. I did find the cable on the Kodak site, but I I've tried both mini-USB and micro-USB and neither fit. Alternatively, bonus points for pointing out a dealer in Bucharest, Romania which has the original part. N.B. I do use a card reader now, but I find it more convenient to use the cable.

• FTP issues with Windows 2003 box and Filezilla

  We've set up a Windows 2003 server with IIS 6 and the FTP is Filezilla. I'm not a sys admin by any means and neither is my other developer. I'm trying to connect to FTP on a Mac with a Cyberduck FTP client. I'm running OSX 10.6.3. The problem is that I can connect to the FTP address, but when I do it will hang for a minute or two trying to list the directories. This address is pointed to the webroot folder so it's only trying to list the pertinent folders for the site we're working on. Eventually after a minute or two it will go through and list everything and then if you try and open a file or another folder, it will hang again and then eventually list the folders. My question: Is there some stupid default setting we're missing? Is this a common occurrence? Like I said I'm not a sys admin at all and I'm sure I'm missing some valuable questions for anyone that reads this, so please fire away if you can help and you need more info, I'll do my best to provide it.   I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on my Virtual Machine as a web server. I've mounted the W:/ drive in Win 7 to my /www folder in Ubuntu. I can read the files, but I'm not able to write to the files. In Samba, I have created the following user: <www-data> = "<www-data>" And given guest ok for the www folder: [www] comment = Ubuntu WWW area path = /var/www browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 ;directory mask = 0775 force user = www-data force group = www-data I've also run sudo chmod -R 755 www to make ensure correct rw access. What am I missing in order to get write access to my ubuntu files from Windows?

• "Enter/Return" Key with Word Mobile on Windows Mobile

  Some of our employees are using PDAs running Windows Mobile. I wish I could provide more data regarding versions, but frankly these things aren't my jurisdiction. Someone's simply come to me looking for what they thought would be a quick fix. They're using Word Mobile and the barcode scanner to record large volumes of data. The scanner's default action is to insert the scanned text exactly as if it had been input with the keyboard, and puts a newline at the end. That's great, because it's exactly what we need it to do: separate data with newlines. The issue comes when system can't read the barcode, and the employee has to type in the data by hand. They've discovered a very peculiar quirk of Mobile applications: pressing the hardware Enter/Return key on the keyboard appears to save and exit the application. How do we change this behavior? They've realized that using the stylus to "click" the virtual on-screen keyboard's Enter/Return key will add the necessary newline, but it's a huge inconvenience for them. How do I fix the default behavior of the Enter/Return key for Word Mobile to instead insert a newline?

• Ubuntu install and dual Boot with Windows 8 UEFI

  i have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 ISO, i load it on a Fat32 USB. My notebook has a hdd with GPT where i installed Official Win 8 Pro x64 (final versión), I partitioned the whole hdd, previously of win 8 install, and bios is set with UEFI boot. My BIOS notebook doesn't support SECURE UEFI BOOT. So I boot the notebook from USB and the Grub runs OK showing whether to run Ubuntu live or to install, but neither one neither two works, when I choose then the screen shows black and nothing happen, it doesn't start/loads the install program. I've try whether to prepare the usb with unetbootin, or just direct copy/paste the files onto the USB. I also have try WUBI, but neither with success, it launch an error when ending.

• My Ubuntu drive is running out of space, how to fix, something is wrong

  I'm moving from windows and am having trouble figuring this out: I'm getting a message that pops up saying disk space is low. It says I have 800MB free. I click on the disk usage analyzer and it shows 24.6 total capacity and 22.5 used. When I look in GParted it shows a partition at 72.6GB where I have Ubuntu installed. It also shows that 70.65GB used and 1.94 free in that partition. How do I figure out what else is in that partition? It's the only ext4 format. What am I missing?

• Cross-forest universal groups on Windows Server?

  I would like to create a Universal Group whose members are a mix of cross-forests users and groups. In the following example, two forests are mentioned (US and UK) and two domains in each forest (GeneralStaff and Java): For example, the universalDevelopers group may comprise of members from UK.Java.Developers and US.Java.Developers. Then, for example, there may be a group of universalSales which contains the users UK.GeneralStaff.John and US.GeneralStaff.Dave. In UK forest at the minute, I can freely add members and groups from the UK. But there is no way to add members from the US forest, despite having a two-way trust in place... e.g. I can login with US members into UK and vice-versa. A further complication is that, with a Universal group in the UK (which contains three domains), I can only add two of the three. It can't see the third. Could people please provide some thoughts on why cross-forest groups can't be created and ways of 'seeing' all domains within a forest. EDIT: This is on a combination of Windows 2003 and 2008 server. Answers can be regarding either. Thanks!
