• Switch to tab by typing a substring of its name in Visual Studio 2005

  Is there a way to navigate between tabs in VS similar to the emacs iswtichb-mode or Firefox ubiquity switch tab mode (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Ubiquity/Ubiquity_0.1_Author_Tutorial#Switching_Tabs) ? In these apps, you just type a substring of the title of the tab (or buffer for emacs) to switch to this tab. For instance, to switch to a tab named "App_Code/Data/MyProgram.cs", you just invoke the tab switching command and then type "Progr" for instance to list all the tab whose name matches this string, including "MyProgram.cs". It's much easier to switch between tabs this way when you have a lot of documents open and when you now where to go (which is the case in most situation) Thank you !

• Spawning BackgroundWorkers

  We have a business case that would be perfect for multiple BackgroundWorkers. As an example, we have a form with a "Save" button on it. Normally we would run all the save commands (Save is an example) synchronously and then close the form. We would like to now split the work onto separate threads using backgroundworker. We will loop through each "Save" required (could be many and/or different number of commands that need executing) creating a BackgroundWorker for each command required. The question is ... how do we wait for ALL the BackgroundWorkers to complete before we close the form. We understand how to wait for a single BackgroundWorker to complete but when we have X number of BackgroundWorkers operating, how do we wait until all are complete before closing the UI form?

• Is the usage of Isolated Storage in Silverlight 3 a security concern

  I am using Silverlight 3 on my website. I have a Login Page for role based authentication, that routes users with different privileges to different parts of the website. I want to use something analogous to the Session Variables available in standard ASP.Net applications. I intend to use Isolated Storage to achieve this. But I am skeptical about security in this option, as the Isolated Storage exists on the client side, and can be manipulated on client side. I am new to the Isolated Storage concept and don't know about the security options provided by it in terms of Encryption and server-side validation etc. If any of you have used it or are aware of the security provided in this case, could you please shed some light on the same.   Hello, my question is How can I set overflow hidden in cases where the html go's outside the screen Right now I have set html {overflow: hidden;} in the head tag off the page. So, it's hidden all the time In my particular case the errors that I show in the registration process cannot be seen on my 13inch laptop, but I don't want to show the scrollbars all the time. That's why I want it to set(or unset) based on the fact if there is overflow or not. What would be the best way? thanks, Richard

• Can iTextSharp export to JPEG?

  I need to be able to export PDF's that I am creating to JPEG, so that users can have a screenshot/thumbnail of the end product, which is faster than opening the whole PDF. I am running this on an ASP.NET website running in Medium Trust in the Rackspace Mosso Cloud. I have yet to find a library that will either work in Medium trust, or in the case of ABC PDF, which works great locally, wont load in Mosso. Maybe Mosso has a custom trust level? I know that iTextSharp works on Mosso, but I haven't been able to figure how to "screenshot" a single page of a PDF, or export a page to JPEG. Is there anyone out there who has done this before?

  Hello. I want to list messages that received specific user from other users group by ID's and ordered by last message received. If I use this query: SELECT MAX(id), fromid, toid, message FROM pro_messages WHERE toid=00003 GROUP BY fromid I do not get last message sent from user "fromid" to user "toid" but the first message sent. Can I do that in some other way or I need to do it with two queries or join tables? id - message id fromid - id of user who sent message toid - id of user who receive message (in this case user 00003)

• Excel and Tab Delimited Files Question

  I am encountering what I believe to be a strange issue with Excel (in this case, Excel 2007, but maybe also Excel 2003, but don't have access to it as I write this). I can reliably convert some server data over into a tab-delimited format (been doing this for years) and then open it using Excel - no issue. However, what seems to be happening is if I have an html <table inside one of the fields, it looks like Excel 2007 thinks it should be converting the table into rows and columns inside Excel (not what I want). As you might imagine, this throws off the entire spreadsheet. So question is, is there any way to set up excel to NOT do this (perhaps some setting in Excel that pertains to reading tab delimited files), or am I missing something? Thanks.

  I'm customising Dynamics CRM 4 and would like to modify the Form for the Case entity to add some JavaScript to the onchange event for the Knowledge Base Article lookup field (kbarticleid_ledit). However, when I click Change Properties for that field I get an error message: This field belongs to a locked section and cannot have its properties modified. How can I get around this and edit it? Is there a workaround similar to customizing the Article view? Or can I hack the DB somehow to "unlock" that field?

• Visual Studio 2010 - Export Template menu option grayed out

  In Visual Studio, I want to make a simple C++ project and export it out as a template, so I can use the template to start new projects to save me time. But the Export Template menu option is always grayed out. I've not once been able to click it. Anyone know why? Anyone know how to accomplish what I need (besides the obvious "make a copy of an existing project in explorer")? It seems like project templates should be a no-brainer feature for VS. This seems to be the case for Visual Studio 2005, 2010 (I probably 2008 as well I haven't checked).

  I have select: select v.accs, v.currency,v.amount,v.drcr_ind, count(*) qua,wm_concat(ids) npx_IDS, wm_concat(px_dtct) npx_DTCT from table v group by accs, currency, amount, drcr_ind but i get error ORA-06502: PL/SQL: : character string buffer too small if i'll remove one string, because sometimes (when v.accs= 3570) count(*) = 215 but when i try to skip using wm_concat for v.accs= 3570 for example this way: select v.accs, v.currency,v.amount,v.drcr_ind, count(*) qua,wm_concat(ids) npx_IDS, (case when v.accs = 3570 then wm_concat(px_dtct) else 'too many' end) npx_DTCT from table v group by accs, currency, amount, drcr_ind i still have the same error message. • Summer Programming Plans

  I've wanted to start "hacking" for many months now. But I put it off in favor of school and other things. Now, though, I'm free for the summer and want to learn as much as I can. I have a rough idea of what I want to try my hand at, but need some guidance as to what specifically - and how - I should learn. This is my plan so far: 1) Get good at programming in general. I plan to read up on how to think/work like a programmer. I'm waiting for the Pragmatic Programmer to arrive, which will be the first book I read. Q: What other books/ebooks should I look at? What more can I do here? 2) Learn/Improve at HTML/CSS. My first project will be to make a personal website/blog for myself using HTML and CSS. ----Then I hope to write/design articles like Dustin Curtis. After I finish this (and learn a programming language) I'll try to create user-based a user-focused website. Q: It's my understanding that just trying to design/manage websites is a good way to learn/improve at HTML/CSS. Is that all correct? 3) Try music development. This might be a sort of stretch for stackoverflow, but I'm interested in mixing/making techno songs. (Think Justice, or Daft Punk, or MSTRKRFT.) Q: I have a Mac. Any ideas on how I could start/learn music making? Any programs I should download, for instance? 4) My main goal: Learning a web development language/framework. I'm a year into learning/using C++. But what I really want to do is develop websites and web apps. I've searched online, and there seems to be great debate over which language/framework to learn first (and which is best). I think I've narrowed it down to three: Ruby (Rails), Python (Django), and PHP (?). Q #1: Which should I learn and use first? (Reasons?) Q #2: One reason I was leaning towards PHP is that I'm taking a PHP development course next semester. Learning it now would make that course easy. If PHP was not the answer to Q #1, is it worth learning both? Or, would it be better to just focus on PHP for this summer and next semester, and then transition thereafter to a better language? 5) iPhone/iPad Programming (Maybe). I've a number of simple, useful app ideas that I'd like to eventually get too. I just bought a Mac, as well as a few app development books. Q #1: Am I spreading myself thin trying to learn all of the above, and objective-C? Q #2: How much harder/easier is objective-C compared to the above languages? Also, how easy is it to learn obj-C after learning a web development language (and some C++)? Q #3: Yes or no? Should I go for it, or just keeep with #1-4 for now? Also: If you have any tips on how I should learn (or how you learned to hack), I'm all ears. I'd be especially interested in how you planned out learning: did you just hack whenever you felt like it, or did you "study" the language a few hours a day, or something else? Thanks so much, guys.

• UIScrollView won't autorotate

  My app design requires the same scrolling functionality found in the iPhone's native Photos app when browsing photos in full screen. Specifically: Each view snaps into place as the view is swiped Scrolling happens in only one direction Rotating the iPhone rotates the entire scrolling region as well such that the frame of each subview (photos, in Apple's case) rotates in-place and paging is still in the same direction (left-to-right) I started to use Apple's sample PageControl code as a launching point, and everything was going swimmingly until I attempted adding autorotation to the code. My sense from the docs was that all I had to do to get autorotation working was to add this to the sample code's MyViewController.m - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return YES; } While that does seem to cause the subviews' backgrounds to rotate, the UILabels and the enclosing UIScrollView stay fixed so that, from a user perspective, paging through the views now requires up/down flicking instead of left/right.

  If you create a Filter object that contains criteria for Linq that normally goes in a where clause like this: var myFilterObject = FilterFactory.GetBlank(); myFilterObject.AddCondition("Salary", "lessThan", "40000"); var myResult = myRepository.GetEmployees(myFilterObject); How would you match the Linq field to the Field Name without using a big case statement? return from e in db.Employee where e.Salary < 40000 select new IList<EmployeeViewModel> { Name= e.name, Salary= e.Salary }; I assume you need to send an object to the Repository that specifies filtering so that you only pull what records you need. I assume Linq doesn't pre-compile (unless you create a customized delegate and function), so you should be able to dynamically specify which fields you want to filter. It would be nice if you could do something like e["Salary"] like some type of Expando Object.

• CUDA: accumulate data into a large histogram of floats

  I'm trying to think of a way to implement the following algorithm using CUDA: Working on a large volume of voxels, for each voxel I calculate an index i and a value c. after the calculation I need to perform histogram[i] += c c is a float value and the histogram can have up to 15,000 bins. I'm looking for a way to implement this efficiently using CUDA. The first obvious problem is that with compute capabilities 1.3 which is what I'm using I can't even do an atomicAdd() of floats so how can I accumulate anything reliably? This example by nVidia does something somewhat simpler. The histograms are saved in the shared memory (which I can't do due to its size) and it only accumulates integers. Can this approach be generalized to my case?

  Today I found the following: #include <stdio.h> int main(){ char x = 255; int z = ((int)x)*2; printf("%d\n", z); //prints -2 return 0; } So basically I'm getting an overflow because the size limit is determined by the operands on the right side of the = sign?? Why doesn't casting it to int before multiplying work? In this case I'm using a char and int, but if I use "long" and "long long int" (c99), then I get similar behaviour. Is it generally advised against doing arithmetic with operands of different sizes?

• Windows batch file to delete .svn files and folders

  Hi,in order to delete all ".svn" files/folders/subfolders in "myfolder" I use this simple line in a batch file: FOR /R myfolder %%X IN (.svn) DO (RD /S /Q "%%X") This works, but if there are no ".svn" files/folders the batch file shows a warning saying: "The system cannot find the file specified." This warning is very noisy so I was wondering how to make it understand that if it doesn't find any ".svn" files/folders he must skip the RD command. Usually using wild cards would suffice, but in this case I don't know how to use them, because I don't want to delete files/folders with .svn extension, but I want to delete the files/folders named exactly ".svn", so if I do this: FOR /R myfolder %%X IN (*.svn) DO (RD /S /Q "%%X") it would NOT delete files/folders named extaclty ".svn" anymore. I tried also this: FOR /R myfolder %%X IN (.sv*) DO (RD /S /Q "%%X") but it doesn't work either, he deletes nothing. Thanks for any help!

  SQLite3 uses dynamic typing rather than static typing, in contrast to other flavors of SQL. The SQLite website reads: Most SQL database engines (every SQL database engine other than SQLite, as far as we know) uses static, rigid typing. With static typing, the datatype of a value is determined by its container - the particular column in which the value is stored. SQLite uses a more general dynamic type system. In SQLite, the datatype of a value is associated with the value itself, not with its container. It seems to me that this is exactly what you don't want, as it lets you store, for example, strings in integer columns. • Blacklight Expander problem while expanding programmatically

  Hi, I am doing a silverlight project in Silverlight 4 and I included the BlackLight project in my project so that I could use their new controls, especialy the dockpanel and the autoexpander, which is causing me at the moment some little problems. What I would like to do is to have several auto-expander that will expand or collapsed when I click on button. In my case more specifically, each auto-expander have a set of parameter to fill, which in turn will fill the other expander and the current one would collaps and the just filled one would expand. The idea is simple, yet when I use a button which is on one of my expander, it only works once... It would expand/collapse the first time, then after that, nothing.   I'm using the following mapping: public class LoadMap : IAutoMappingOverride<Load> { public void Override(AutoMapping<Load> mapping) { mapping.HasMany(x => x.Bids).OptimisticLock.None(); mapping.Version(x => x.Version); } } But when I try to create the session I get the following exception: [FormatException: The string 'none' is not a valid Boolean value.] [XmlSchemaValidationException: The 'optimistic-lock' attribute is invalid - The value 'none' is invalid according to its datatype 'http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema:boolean' - The string 'none' is not a valid Boolean value.] I'm using NHibernate 2.1.2.4000 and I was using Fluent NHibernate 1.0RTM, but tried the latest build 636 just to be sure this isn't something that was fixed recently or something. As a side note, in case I'm doing this all wrong, I would like to be able to make changes to the .Bids list without incrementing Version. I saw an example on Ayende's blog that did what I wanted with properties.

• Add params to given URL in Python

  Suppose I was given by some URL. Is might already have GET parameters (e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=question) or not (e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/). And now I need to add some parameters to it like {'lang':'en','tag':'python'} so in first case I'll have http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=question&lang=en&tag=python and in second — http://stackoverflow.com/search?lang=en&tag=python. Is there any standard way to do this?

• How to return model state from child action handler in ASP.NET MVC

  In my blog engine, I have one controller action that displays blog content, and in that view, I call Html.RenderAction(...) to render the "CreateComment" form. When a user posts a comment, the post is handled by the comment controller (not the blog controller). If the comment data is valid, I simply return a Redirect back to the blog page's URL. If the comment data is invalid (e.g. comment body is empty), I want to return the ViewData with the error information back to the blog controller and through the blog view to the CreateComment action/view so I can display which fields are bad. I have this working fine via AJAX when Javascript is enabled, but now I'm working on the case where Javascript might be disabled. If I return a RedirecToAction or Redirect from the comment controller, the model state information is lost. Any ideas?

• IPC::Open3 Fails Running Under Apache

  I have a module that uses IPC::Open3 (or IPC::Open2, both exhibit this problem) to call an external binary (bogofilter in this case) and feed it some input via the child-input filehandle, then reads the result from the child-output handle. The code works fine when run in most environments. However, the main use of this module is in a web service that runs under Apache 2.2.6. And under that environment, I get the error: Cannot fdopen STDOUT: Invalid argument This only happens when the code runs under Apache. Previously, the code constructed a horribly complex command, which included a here-document for the input, and ran it with back-ticks. THAT worked, but was very slow and prone to breaking in unique and perplexing ways. I would hate to have to revert to the old version, but I cannot crack this.
