Windows 7 clean install becomes corrupt after reboot (repeated many fresh installs)

My laptop keeps crashing on boot after clean Windows 7 install. Ok, here is the story, and some fact. Computer: Samsung NP900X3C-A04HK (256GB SSD, 8GB RAM) OS to install: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (not from Samsung, own fresh Win) I purchased this laptop about a year ago, never booted it into the Windows Home that was installed on it, installed directly Ubuntu on the machine. Full disc encryption was the selected install, so of course it wiped the complete disc (including Samsung Recovery Partition). After some time, I felt like going back to Windows, as Windows 7 is actually quite nice. So I went to buy a fresh Windows 7Ultimate with SP1. Now to the tricky part. Windows installs perfectly, and after installing all Windows updates, drivers from Samsung, software I need, it is time for shutting it down and go to bed. Starting it up again, and it is not booting, these are the type of errors I have gotten so far (fresh installed it more then a dozen times now, and tried different suggestions from threads on the net). Windows failed to start... Status: 0xc000000f Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. File: /boot/bcd Status: 0xc000000f Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data. And some other errors, not all the same. Not memory of this. I have run different disc checks, and all says my SSD is in perfect shape. Note: Soft reboots from Windows menu works, never gets corrupted. But if I Shutdown and then start it up again, this is when it happens. Can someone help me not get back to Ubunut? What can be the cause, and how can it be fixed so I do not get there problems again?

Downloading Emails locally with Thunderbird

I am using Gmail (web interface) for sometime now, and have well over 20 labels and some thousand mails there archived to different labels in Gmail. Now I want to have a local copy of all my mails and following points are important in the context: The Primary mail access mechanism would continue to be Gmail web for me. I just want a backup of my mail account locally. Ideally the mails should download locally in folders named after Gmail labels (I know this is possible via IMAP but probably not by POP) After all my mails are available locally, I will delete most of them in Gmail to free up space and because I want to archive them. The mails should continue to exist locally and should not be deleted when I delete when from Gmail web interface. I would be syncing my gmail account locally let's say every month. So, the new mails that I have sent/received during this period should come over to my local mailbox in the folders named after Gmail labels. I do understand that Gmail maintains a single copy of email having 2 different labels and such email would get duplicated locally in the 2 folders and I am okay with that. Essentially you can see I just want to archive my mails from the Gmail server to a local backup and then sync (one way from Gmail to locally) new mails at regular intervals. For some points above, POP seems to be the option while IMAP seems for the others. I am really confused and need help in deciding which of POP or IMAP would suit me best. I have currently chosen Thunderbird to be my local email client but would not have a problem switching to Outlook or anything else as long as I get my desired archiving functionality.

Windows Server 2008 - Non-Domain users can see my server shares

Windows Server 2008 - Server Machine Windows 7 Professional - Client Machine I have a domain. It was setup by the client. The shares on the server are restricted correctly when a user logs on to the domain and uses their workstation, I have a few groups setup to restrict some access but the groups are at their core "Domain Users". The problem I am having is that when a user brings in a laptop with Windows 7 Pro on it, they can type up the name of the server in the "Run Dialog" on the start menu like "\SERVERNAME\" and access all of the shares freely... because they are not logged in to the domain there are no restrictions it seems.I have reviewed the permissions on the folders and they all have to be "Domain Users" and I have removed "Everyone" from the list of people able to see it. Guest access is also disabled...What am I doing wrong? Only group in the list is "Domain Users" isn't a domain user a user that is logged in to the domain? How do I stop non-domain users from seeing the shared folder? I noticed this on Windows Server 2003 too at another time. I assume they both had similar security issues and neither were set up by myself so I am not sure what could have been enabled or specifically deactivated that makes this issue appear.

Monitor programs accessing my keyboard?

As of a few days ago, my computer is behaving 'erratically'. When I am typing, my pointer will randomly move to another place in the text and start typing a semi-random string of characters. ("gvyfn" is common; It has typed this about 8 times whilst I composed all the text above) It often highlights part of or all the text and overwrites it. It sometimes goes into loops of pressing Control-alt-delete down, bringing up Windows 7 menu thing. It sometimes even messes with mouseclicks; they have unexpected results, like requesting admin priveledges from applications, instead of switching to their window. I believe this is because it is holding a alt-function key down. This behaviour happens periodically, in waves. It might subside for an hour, then continue to haunt me. I believe it to be a virus or malicious program. My anti-virus (Symantec) and multiply MS rootkit removers could not find anything suspicious. I've noticed that sometimes it re-maps keys, and types gibberish when I press certain keys (though no pattern is evident). I believe a malicious program has installed a keyhook on my computer. I'm wondering... - Is there a way to let me view which programs are emulating keystrokes? - Is there a way to view what keyboard hooks are installed? (I'm also at liberty to try any other techniques to remove this blasted thing. It is easily the most fustrating computer problem I've encountered). Thanks!

Notepad and Regedit does not launch from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, but will from C:\Windows\SysWOW64

My work machine was recently updated from Windows XP 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I have found a few odd things that I can not figure out why they are occurring. If I type in Notepad.exe or RegEdit.exe from the Run diaglog the applications will not launch. When executing RegEdit.exe from the Run dialog the UAC does display asking for admin privileges, but the application never launches. Also, if I go to the Start menu and click on Notepad from there, Notepad never launches either. Other programs seem to be okay, like mspaint, wordpad, etc. Now, if I launch Notepad or RegEdit from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 then these applications will run, though I think these are the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version. I am not sure what is going on. Has anyone seen this behavior before and how to fix it? I have Windows 7 64-bit at home and I don't have this issue. I even copied Notepad.exe from home and place it in the C:\ folder and tried to launch it from there and it still doesn't work. Regards, Mark

Git workflow for two tight-knit projects

Two very similar projects I'm maintaining an online Markdown editor using Git as RCS (and accessorily made available on GitHub). From this web app, I've created a Chrome app: the code is the same, aside from some Chrome technicalities. I care about open sourcing these two projects. Still, the Chrome app's code being the same as the web app's except for some dull details, I've first chosen to (1) not publish the Chrome app on GitHub, and (2) not use Git to manage its code. Instead, I would manually review the web app's commits, then replicate the few changes in the Chrome app. … slightly drifting apart However, I've decided to add a feature to the Chrome app only. So, even though both codebases will remain broadly similar, they'll be diverging enough to make me reconsider the rationale behind my initial decision to not version control nor share the Chrome app's source code. Since I'm now willing to use Git to version control both apps, and that I want to share both of them on GitHub, how should I go about it? Should I use two different repositories, or one repo with two long-running branches? What would be the pros and cons of each approach in that context? What would be the easiest/fastest way to regularly "import" commits from the web app to the Chrome app, since the web app is going to remain the master branch? Is cherry-picking the only solution?

Running Ubuntu on Toshiba L630

After suffering with the following error while trying to install Ubuntu onto my Toshiba L630 (kernel_thread_helper+0x0 0x10). I bypassed the error and managed to install the OS by going going into the "installation setup menu"( by pressing f6 while booting from my Ubuntu Installation CD) and assigning "acpi = off". I believe this fixes the problem because it stops the laptop doing checks that aren't compatible with the software. However, now that I have Ubuntu installed, I cannot run the bloody thing because I have no way of choosing "acpi=off" before booting Ubuntu. I guess this is a pretty broad question but I'm going to ask it anyways. Has anyone managed to find a version of linux that works on an L630 without any errors? If not, Is there a way to choose acpi=off before booting? Maybe by adding a line to the grub? Also, does anybody think I'm wasting my time? I read somewhere that toshiba laptops don't work well with linux. So if there isn't a fix for this I would appreciate being alerted about this. Cheers

Windows 7 constantly accessing hard drive [duplicate]

Possible Duplicate: Tool which finds which process is causing the heavy hard drive activity? Did you notice that on Windows 7 (I use 64-bit) the hard drive LED is constantly blinking, which means that the OS is constantly wearing the hard drive by accessing it? It's something related to the system process, and it even occurs in safe mode, so I don't think it's a third party software problem. Has anyone experienced this problem as well, and is it a Windows problem, or caused by something else? Edit: My indexing service is reduced to indexing only the Start Menu. Even if it was set for the whole computer, it would eventually stop; that's not it. My friends also suffer from the same problem. Please answer my first question: have any of you have seen a Windows 7 machine whose hard drive LED is at rest? I'm also trying to track down the offending process using procmon and Resource Monitor, and it actually seems like a system process. It could also be svchost.exe, and I'm not sure which file they are accessing since I see a lot of activity which I can't make sense of. It's loading system DLLs, accessing registry keys, and other nonsense.

Problem with cometd and jetty 6 / 7

I've got an ant script that packages my code up into a war with the cometd 1.1.1 binaries and jetty binaries that are appropriate to the version of jetty I deploy the war to (so 7.1.2.v20100523 binaries when I deploy to jetty 7.1.2.v20100523 and 6.1.24 when I deploy to 6.1.24). Bundler isn't loading gems

I have been having a problem with using Bundler and being able to access my gems without having to require them somewhere, as config.gem used to do that for me (as far as I know). same goes for any other gem. Does Bundler not include gems like the old Rails 2.0 did? Or is something messed up with my system? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

half or quarter black screen in android

I have an android activity that when I launch sometimes (about 1 in 4 times) it only draws quarter or half the screen before showing it. When I change the orientation or press a button the screen draws properly. I'm just using TextViews, Buttons, Fonts - no drawing or anything like that. All of my code for initialising is in the onCreate(). In this method I'm loading a text file, of about 40 lines long, and also getting a shared preference. Could this cause a delay so that it can't draw the intent? Thanks in advance if anyone has seen anything similar. EDIT - I tried commenting out the loading of the word list, but it didn't fix the problem. Android Remote Service Keeps Restarting

Ok so I've built an app that uses a remote service to do some real time GPS tracking. I am using the below code to start and bind to the service. The remote service uses aidl, sets up a notification icon, runs the GPS and locationListener. In onLocationChanged, a handler sends data back to the caller via the callback. Pretty much straight out of the examples and resources online. I want to allow the service to continue running even if the app closes. When the app is restarted, I want the app to again bind to the service (using the existing service if running) and again receive data from the tracker. I currently have the app mode set to singleTask and cannot use singleinstance due to another issue. My problem is that quit often even after the app and service are shut down either from the app itself, or from AdvancedTaskKiller, or a Forceclose, the service will restart and initialize the GPS. touching on the notification will open the app. I again stop the tracking which removes the notification and turns off the GPS Close the app, and again after a few seconds the service restarts. The only way to stop it is to power off the phone. What can I do to stop this from happening. Does it have to do with the mode of operation? START_NOT_STICKY or START_REDELIVER_INTENT? Or do I need to use stopSelf()? My understanding is that if the service is not running when I use bindService() that the service will be created...so do I really need to use start/stopService also? I thought I would need to use it if I want the service to run even after the app is closed. That is why i do not unbind/stop the service in onDestroy(). Is this correct? CoreData update problems

My app makes updates in background thread then saves context changes. And in main context there is a table view that works with NSFetchedResultsController. For some time updates work correctly, but then exception is thrown. To check this I've added NSLog(@"%@", [self.controller fetchedObjects]); to -controllerDidChangeContent:. I've logged data during update & before saving. This object is in updatedObjects only. Why can this method return "bad" object? (Moreover, during updates this object is affected almost each update. And only after some passes becomes "bad" one). P.S.: I use RestKit to manage CoreData. UPDATED: The exception was got, when I did smth. like this: for (PRBattle *battle in [self.controller fetchedObjects) { switch (battle.statusScalar) { case ... default: [battle willAccessValueForKey:nil]; NSAssert1(NO, @"Unexpected battle status found: %@", battle); } } The exception is on line with -willAccessValueForKey:. Scalar status for battle is enum, that is bind to integer values 1..4. I've mentioned all possible values in switch's cases (above default:). And the last one has break;. So this one is possible only when battle.statusScalar returns non-enum value. 100% height with fixed footer and embedded Google Map

I have a problem with a layout - it's not online anywhere, just local, but if you copy and paste the code below into an html page and run it locally you will see the same page I do. It's very nearly there. What I'm trying to achieve is a page with no scrollbars using up all available vertical space. Yes, I can set "overflow:hidden" on the container declaration and that helps, but it's not quite right. I want to actually have the google map surrounded with a 1em border. I have this on 3 sides but the 100% height declaration on the content div crashes the bottom border. If you don't realise the implications of a percentage-sized google map div, then the parent HAS to have a height declared for it to work. As the footer is absolute and outside of the flow, there is no "bottom" border to work to and the layout just doesn't work. The content div 100% height basically seems to take its size from the viewport and not the containing div. It's driving me mad... just can't seem to work out how to do this and I'd really appreciate some input. When my callback function is called (waveIn) when the buffer is full, the hdr structure passed back in wavehdr is obviously corrupted. I am clearly concerned about the order of the fields in the view. I do not know if Visual Studio .NET cares about actual memory order when displaying the record in the "local"-view, but they are obviously not displayed in the order I speciefied in the struct. Then theres no data pointer and the bufferLength field is far to high. Interestingly the bytesRecorded field is exactly 64000 - bufferLength and bytesRecorded I'd expect both to be 64000 though. I do not know what exactly is going wrong, maybe someone can help me out on this. I'm an absolute noob to managed code programming and marshalling so please don't be too harsh to me for all the stupid things I've propably done. It's like trying to learn how to swim with your hands tied on your back. Some things I tried (to no effect): .NET compact framework does not seem to support the Pack = 2^x directive in [StructLayout]. I tried [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit)] and used 4 bytes and 8 bytes alignment. 4 bytes alignmentgave me the same result as the above code and 8 bytes alignment only made things worse - but that's what I expected. Interestingly if I move the code from setupBuffer into the setupWaveIn and do not declare the GCHandle in the context of the class but in a local context of setupWaveIn the struct returned by the callback function does not seem to be corrupted. I am not sure however why this is the case and how I can use this knowledge to fix my code. I'd really appreciate any good links on marshalling, calling unmanaged code from C#, etc. Then I'd be very happy if someone could point out my mistakes. What am I doing wrong? Why do I not get what I'd expect.

PHP Templated site w/ file_get_content links

Ok so i have a template script my friend built for me. I'll include all file names OK so what is not working is file_get_contents is not grabing the content (1 I don't know where the content should be placed and 2 i want it placed in a directory so that IF i change the template the area where content stays is the same. And also, ECommerce.PMethod.Sql.SqlConns.Open() uses its own connection string, not the one loaded by spring, it's different module from diffrent team. And I am sure the connection string is correct. And, this ysod cames up randomly. Sometimes nothing is wrong, and sometimes, it appears. I thought there could be something wrong with my database or the network/firewall, I will check it later, but now I want understand this tricky stack trace.

Customized listfield with image displaying from a url

I am displaying a customized list field with text on the right side and image on the left side.The image comes from a URL dynamically.Initially i am placing a blank image on the left of the list field,then call URLBitmapField class's setURL method,which actually does the processing and places the processed image on top of the blank image.The image gets displayed on the list field,but to see that processed image i need to press any key or click on the list field items.I want the processed image to be displayed automatically in the list field after the processing.Can anyone tell me where i am getting wrong?
