• HP ENVY 4-Sleekbook or Samsung Series 5 NP530U3B Ultrabook?

- by Sam
I am a high school student and I need a laptop within the budget of 650$. I usually have a browser, microsoft office, music, and possibly a movie or something open at once. Will the HP ENVY 4's Intel Core i3 processor be enough to handle this or would I have to get the Samsung series 5 13 inch ultrabook to get this job done? I really like the look of the HP ENVY 4, but I also want a laptop that will be quick enough to handle my needs. PLEASE HELP!

• Bluetooth pairing works in 10.10 but not in 11.04

- by Nathan Haines
My laptop, a Compaq Presario V2000, has a built-in Bluetooth module that has worked well since at least Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I use it to pair with headphones and a mouse. These both worked great in Ubuntu 10.10 (and still do with a live CD) but I cannot pair to any Bluetooth device in Ubuntu 11.04, even from a live CD. I can see the Bluetooth module in lspci and when I try to set up a new device from the Bluetooth indicator my computer detects all Bluetooth devices around me but pairing always fails. At the moment I'm most concerned with getting my Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 paired. Relevant output of lspci: Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:011d Hewlett-Packard Integrated Bluetooth Module

• Referring EDMX file in Separate VS Project from T4 Template

- by Paul Petrov
In my project I needed to separate template generated entities, context in separate projects from the EDMX file. I’ve stumbled across this problem how to make template generator to find edmx file without hardcoding absolute path into the template. Using relative path directly (inputFile=@”..\ProjectFolder\DataModel.edmx”) generated error: Error 2 Running transformation: System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\ProjectFolder\DataModel.edmx' The code that worked well for me when placed in the beginning of the .tt file: … string rootPath = Host.ResolvePath(String.Empty); string relativePath = @"..\\ProjectDir\\DataModel.edmx"; string inputFile = Path.Combine(rootPath, relativePath); EdmItemCollection ItemCollection = loader.CreateEdmItemCollection(inputFile); …

• Aren't there compilers better at telling the programmer what's wrong in a code ?

- by jokoon
I have worked a little while with the Microsoft compiler from Visual C++ but I worked a long time with G++, and I remember often having bad times understanding what was wrong in my code with the former. Beside binary code generation and optimisation, I think this is a very important feature of a C++ compiler: giving the programmer a clue that makes him understand as fast as possible what is wrong with his/her code. I can understand some programmers understand programming as some sort of "competition" to make less errors, but to me that's a counter productive opinion. I once tried Clang compiler for C from the LLVM thingie, I didn't use it for a long time, but I was impressed on how explicit and easy to understand the error messages were. What are your experiences, and how do you think this matters ? Some WIP of C++ Clang: http://clang.llvm.org/cxx_status.html

• Do ASP.Net Web Forms actually produce ADA compliant HTML? Does the ASP/AJAX toolkit undermine the goal of ADA compliance?

- by Justin984
I'm trying to convince my employer to let us use the Microsoft ASP/AJAX toolkit since it simplifies the implementation of many controls. However they have rejected the idea on the grounds that it produces "AJAX code" which is not ADA compliant. However the same employer requires webpages to be written in ASP.NET Web Forms which, as far as I can tell from the source, is very very far from ADA compliance. I am new to both web programming and ADA compliance. My questions are: Do ASP.Net Web Forms actually produce ADA compliant HTML? Will the ASP/AJAX toolkit undermine the goal of ADA compliance?

• Don't Call it a Comeback

- by Chris Haaker
I received the email like most of you about Jeff and crew stepping down and selling the blog to another company. That it is a long time associate and friend of the team we have all grown to know and love, I feel much better about the move. Who cares, Chris, you haven't blogged religiously in ages! I know, and its a crime. Blame life, Twitter, my kids, laziness or whatever else you can think of. I always tell myself I am going to make a comeback - - "Don't call it a comeback - I been here for years." But after a few posts I seem to lose my steam. Its hard to explain, hell, I can't explain it. But we'll see what happens this time. Just don't call it a comeback. 2012 rMBP 15" Quad Core 2.33 GHz 16GB Memory 258GB SSDMarsEdit 3.5 (Please Microsoft Live Team - Make LiveWriter for OS X)

• Color indication in Visual Studio 2012

- by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great? A simple color indicator for each mode in visual studio 2012. Stay tuned for the more. I am going to put some more post about Visual Studio 2012. Till then happy programing

• Announcing a new Free Windows Azure Platform Trial offer

- by Eric Nelson
We now have a truly useful Windows Azure Platform trial. Which makes me very happy as I was a vocal critic of the original trial offer. Simply put, the small number of compute hours it included made it useless for many potential early adopters. This is now fixed. The new Introductory Special now includes a generous 750 hours of compute – enough to run a web role 24/7. Enjoy! Related Links Full announcement If you are an ISV then there is a better offer for you via Microsoft Platform Ready and Cloud Essentials and keep an eye on our events for ISVs as we will be doing Windows Azure Platform technical briefings starting March 31st.

• AppFabric – where are all the monitoring events?

- by Shawn Cicoria
When you’ve just gone through a setup of AppFabric and you’ve got some WF/WCF things happening, if you start looking at the Dashboard and you see nothing, it might be as simple as restarting SQL Agent. I generally don’t reboot my system for several days and after installing AppFabric the SQL Agent jobs didn’t start firing right away. Yes, even running a boot to VHD, you can still put the machine to sleep (just logoff and click on Sleep)… So, after spending time looking through the SQL monitoring DB that AppFabric was configured to use, I saw a bunch of records in the [AppFabric_Monitoring].[dbo].[ASStagingTable] table. This table is the stopping point before the SQL Agent job (or Service Broker in SQL Express) pushes the items to their final resting place. This post goes through a few things to check on AppFabric monitoring http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/appfabric-items-to-check-when-configuring-appfabric-monitoring.aspx Of course, during development you might want to clean up regularly For that there’s the PowerShell command Clear-AsMonitoringSqlDatabase -Database AppFabric_Monitoring

• Trip Report: Scottsdale Arizona Event Conference Planning

Monday May 10th, 2010 represents my largest and best event to-date, that I have ever hosted. For the last seven years, I’ve grown a technical audience around Microsoft programming / developers in the Phoenix area. Some travel from California, New Mexico, and other parts of Arizona, but for the most part the crowd is local. In years past, this all day event has been as small as 300 folks, and as large as 500, and I’ve tried been to venues around the valley some better than others. • Determining Whether a String Is Contained Within a String Array (Case Insensitive)

About once every couple of months I need to write a bit of code that does one thing if a particular string is found within an array of strings and something else if it is not ignoring differences in case. For whatever reason, I never seem to remember the code snippet to accomplish this, so after spending 10 minutes of research today I thought I'd write it down here in an effort to help commit it to memory or, at the very least, serve as a quick place to find the answer when the need arises again. So without further adieu, here it is:Visual Basic Version:If stringArrayName.Contains("valueToLookFor", StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase) Then ... Else ... End IfC# Version:if (stringArrayName.Contains("valueToLookFor", StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) ... else ...Without the StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase the search will be case-sensitive. • Skills to Focus on to land Big 5 Software Engineer Position

- by Megadeth.Metallica
Guys, I'm in my penultimate quarter of grad school and have a software engineering internship lined up at a big 5 tech company. I have dabbled a lot recently in Python and am average at Java. I want to prepare myself for coding interviews when I apply for new grad positions at the Big 5 tech companies when I graduate at the end of this year. Since I want to have a good shot at all 5 companies (Amazon,Google,Yahoo,Microsoft and Apple) - Should I focus my time and effort on mastering and improving my Java. Or is my time better spent checking out other languages and tools ( Attracted to RoR, Clojure, Git, C# ) I am planning to spend my spring break implementing all the common algorithms and Data structure out of my algorithms textbook in Java.

• Be careful when Git suppresses bin Folders

- by Marko Apfel
Initial situation Often for Visual Studio projects the typical content of a .gitignore file contains this line bin or [B|b]in It is used to avoid that Git tries to track compile outputs as repository relevant data. Problem But keep in mind: this will also suppress bin folders of additional stuff like frameworks and toolsets. For instance Microsoft.SDKs contains a folder named Bin with a lot of programs Simian contains a folder named bin with the program themselves If you store such artifacts also in the repository - according to the principle of a “self containing project” – you could lost the content in the bin folder! Solution Till yet I don’t have a good idea. So I verify for each new added toolset or framework whether it has or has not such a bin folder. If it has, then I must add this bin folder manually to the repository so that Git track it.

• New Office 2010 theme added for creating current UIs

- by Webgui
Visual WebGui offers its developers a set of out-of-the-box themes which they can easily apply to their applications. This allows developers to focus on the development and business logic rather than dealing with UI design missions. However, design tools and customization freedom are available for those who need to customize current themes or create their own custom theme. As part of the constant updates and enhancements to Visual WebGui and its developer CompanionKit a new available theme was added last week. The new theme applies the latest Microsoft UI - Office 2010 to Visual WebGui and allows developers and/or end users (of 6.4.0 and above) to switch their Web applications UI to the successful design of Office 2010. After the latest update the new theme is integrated into the Visual WebGui Developers CompanionKit which now matches Visual WebGui 6.4.0 Release version's infrastructure. The update also includes several enhancements to existing controls and features and the addition of some new ones. Go to the CompanionKit
