  • Limiting object allocation over multiple threads

    I have an application which retrieves and caches the results of a clients query. The client then requests different chunks of data and the application sends the relevant results and removes them from the cache. A new requirement for this application is that there needs to be a run-time configurable maximum number of results which may be cached. I've taken the naive approach and implemented this by using a counter under a lock which is incremented every time a result is cached and decremented whenever a result is removed from the cache. Unfortunately, this has drastically reduced the applications performance when processing a large number of concurrent requests. I have tried both a critical section lock and spin-lock; the performance improves a bit with a spin-lock, but is still unacceptably slow. Is there a better way to solve this problem which may improve performance? Right now I have a thread pool that services requests and each request is tied to a Request object which stores that cached results for that particular request.   • LNK2005: delete already defined error in VC++

    Hi, I asked this question earlier as well: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2773168/lnk2005-delete-already-defined-error-in-vc The answer I got was that I should be using dynamic version of DLLs. I did that and it compiled fine. Now, but when I gave the exe to one of my colleagues to run, they told me - they can't run it as it requires some shared dll, so they need a static one. When I try to do static build then I get the error as mentioned in my previous link. Do, I need to provide some other file as well with exe. I have got .lib file as well in the build directory. Shall I provide taht one as well? I can run it fine on my m/c in whichever directory I put it. Any help is much appreciated as I am really stuck. Thanks in advance, Suchita

  • Multiple Apps Possible via Launch Services, want to Specify Particular One

    Here's the issue: I have a list of App names that I want to launch. They do not include a path (e.g. {"VLC","Microsoft Word"}. I have two different copies of VLC in different directories. I would like Launch Services to ONLY open the one from /Applications/ and not EVER launch from /Applications/AnotherDirectory I want to get the path of these, and test to see what Launch Services wants to launch (via bash with "open" or applescript via "tell _ to launch" or [NSWorkspace launch...]) The only way that I have come up with to test the path of a file about to be launched by launch services is: Applescript: tell application "Finder" to return the (posix path of (path to application "VLC" as alias)) That works fine, but launches the app (which I don't want at all). Suggestions?

    I have a thread A which allocates memory and assigns it to a shared pointer. Then this thread spawns 3 other threads X, Y and Z and passes a copy of the shared pointer to each. When X, Y and Z go out of scope, the memory is freed. But is there a possibility that 2 threads X, Y go out of scope at the exact same point in time and there is a race condition on reference count so instead of decrementing it by 2, it only gets decremented once. So, now the reference count newer drops to 0, so there is a memory leak. Note that, X, Y and Z are only reading the memory. Not writing or resetting the shared pointer. To cut a long story short, can there be a race condition on the reference count and can that lead to memory leaks?

    hi, in PHP.INI, I can set the variable "error_log" and it is currently set to "error_log", which manes one file of that name in each directory Do you know ... if I set it to "public_html/error_log" - will I get only one single error log file? Any other way to do so? I really just want a single site-wide error file to check, rather than one on each sub-directory. For bonus marks, can I send myself an email each time a new entry is added to the file? Left as an exercise for the reader - can I ignore some "errors" which aren't really?

    Is there a way with gcc and GNU binutils to mark some functions such that they will generate an error at link-time if used? My situation is that I have some library functions which I am not removing for the sake of compatibility with existing binaries, but I want to ensure that no newly-compiled binary tries to make use of the functions. I can't just use compile-time gcc attributes because the offending code is ignoring my headers and detecting the presence of the functions with a configure script and prototyping them itself. My goal is to generate a link-time error for the bad configure scripts so that they stop detecting the existence of the functions.

So I created the following tables: Companies: id, company name, company address Administrators: (in relation with companies) id, company_id, username, email, password, fullname Then, each company has some workers in it, I store data about workers. Hence, workers has a profession, Agreement Type signed and some other common things. Now, the parent tables and data in it for workers (Agreement Types, Professions, Other Common Things) are going to be the same for each company. Should I create 1 new database for each company?     I am doing some sort of science with a combination of Python, bash scripts and configuration files with weird syntaxes from old C programs. To run different tests, I have to tune (open text file, edit and save) a number of these files, but it is getting harder and harder to remember which files to edit. Also, the tasks are very repetitive and I end having a bunch of comment lines, switching on and off the settings for a specific run. I dream of a tool that can keep a list of files (regardless of the file format) and allow me to centrally choose from a predefined list of "profiles", taking care of editing the script/config files. For example lets say I have a config and script file: config.cfg var1 = 1.0 #var1 = 1.5 script.sct function(200.0) #function(300.0) I would like to instead have auxiliary text files: config.cfg.tem var1 = $$var1$$ script.sct.tem function($$par1$$) and in a central script or even better, a GUI, just switch from profile1 (e.g. var1=1.0,par1=200.0) to profile2 (e.g. var1=1.5,par1=300.0), and the tool to automatically update the text files. Any idea if such a tools exists?

    Hi All. I am new to sqlite and SQL in general. I am keen to switch from flat-files to sqlite for holding some measurement information. I need a tip on how to better layout the database, since I have zero experience with this. I have a ~10000 unique statistic counters that are collected before and after each test iteration. Max number of iterations are 10, though it could be less. I was thinking the following: CREATE TABLE stat_names(stat_id, stat_name); CREATE TABLE stats_per_iteration(stat_id, before_iter_1, after_iter_1, before_iter_2, after_iter_2, ...); stat_names table would hold mapping of a full counter to a uniq stat_id. stats_per_iteration table would hold mesurement data 1 + 10 * 2 columns. stat_names.stat_id = stats_per_iteration.stat_id OR maybe I should have a separate table for each iteration? Which would results in 1 + 10 tables in database. Thanks!

    I have a database that contains a few tables such as person, staff, member, and supporter. The person table contains information about every staff, member, and supporter. The information it contains is name,address,email, and telephone. I also created an id that is the primary key. My issue is that I also have an primary key ID for staff, member, and supporter. For instance, in the person table is John with id 1. He is a supporter so in the supporter table is pID(for person id)to reference back to John with all his information and ID(for supporter ID). pID references to the person table and every person has an ID incremented by 1 starting at 1. supporter ID is for every supporter and also starts at 1 and is incremented by 1. Is it possible to have in the supporter table pID = 1 and supporter ID = 1? Another person may have a pID = 26 and supporter ID = 5. Or will supporter ID have to be different than the pID and be something like "sup"? So you would have pID = 1 and supporter ID = sup1 or pID = 26 and supporter ID = sup5

  • Take advantage of multiple cores executing SQL statements

    I have a small application that reads XML files and inserts the information on a SQL DB. There are ~ 300 000 files to import, each one with ~ 1000 records. I started the application on 20% of the files and it has been running for 18 hours now, I hope I can improve this time for the rest of the files. I'm not using a multi-thread approach, but since the computer I'm running the process on has 4 cores I was thinking on doing it to get some improvement on the performance (although I guess the main problem is the I/O and not only the processing). I was thinking on using the BeginExecutingNonQuery() method on the SqlCommand object I create for each insertion, but I don't know if I should limit the max amount of simultaneous threads (nor I know how to do it). What's your advice to get the best CPU utilization? Thanks

    I have 2 reports, "report1.rdlc" and "report2.rdlc" and I want to be able to swap betweent the 2 of them in a single report viewer ("rv_1"). I also have 3 buttons: btn_1 which does: rv_1.LocalReport.ReportEmbeddedResource = "Application1.Report1.rdlc" rv_1.RefreshReport() btn_2 which does: rv_1.LocalReport.ReportEmbeddedResource = "Application1.Report2.rdlc" rv_1.RefreshReport() btn_3 which does: dim rds as new ReportDataSource rds.name = rds.value = rv_1.reset() rv_1.LocalReport.DataSources.add(rds) rv_1.RefreshReport() Now no matter what I put for rds.name and rds.value it leaves me with "A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source 'dataSetName_TableName'. So my question is; what do I need to put there in order to get this to work correctly?

Now, if I run the same test alone from reSharper the output is fine and does not repeat. However, if I run this test along side 2 other tests in the same class, the output is repeated three times. I am totally confused. What the hell is going on here?
