• Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

• Using the right folder for the right job. Article link, please?

  There are specific folders designed for specific tasks. /var/www holds your web sites, /usr/bin contains files to run your applications...yet I still find myself putting nearly all of my work in ~. Is it possible to overuse my home directory? Will it come back to haunt me? Anyone have a good link to an article of best practices for organizing your files so that they are placed in their "correct" place? Is there even such a thing in Linux? I am referring specifically to user-generated content. I do not compile applications from source, I use apt-get for those tasks. This article has a great introduction to what I'm looking for. Table 3-2, "Subdirectories of the root directory" is the sort of thing I'm looking for, but with more details/examples.

• php.ini use multiple include paths - openbasedir restriction

  I need to allow an include path for a vhost subdomain on Plesk 10. I've edited the PHP PEAR path into /etc/php.ini as I'm happy for it to be globally available: include_path = ".:/usr/share/pear/" This works insofar as PHP is able to see the files in that directory when a script tries to include them, but I'm getting the dreaded openbasedir error: Warning: require_once() [function.require-once]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/usr/share/pear/xxxx.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (/var/www/vhosts/xxxx.com/subdomains/test/httpdocs/:/tmp/) Am I right in saying that the subdomain or main domain can have a vhost.conf file in which I can alter the openbasedir allowed paths? I've tried searching out solutions but I'm afraid I can't quite see one yet :)

• How to grant secure access to an untrusted developer to an exisiting virtual host?

  Our security policy does not permit ftpd on our servers. Our trusted developers use ftps to access our webservers and they have full access to the server. How do we grant limited access to a single untrusted developer for an existing virtual host. Ive configured rssh to only allow sftp to our untrusted developer, but we dont want him browsing around our other sites. I've investigated chroot, but it seems overly complex and more for restricting access to their home folders. I want to limit access to /srv/www/vhostx/ and below. Whats the best solution?

• Server-to-Switch Trunking in Procurve switch, what does this mean?

  I am looking to set up switch redundancy in a new datacenter environment. IEEE 802.3ad seems to be the go-to concept on this, at least when paired with a technology that gets around the "single switch" limitation for the link aggregation. Looking through the brochure for a procurve switch I see: Server-to-Switch Distributed Trunking, which allows a server to connect to two switches with one logical trunk; increases resiliency and enables load sharing in virtualized data centers http://www.procurve.com/docs/products/brochures/5400_3500%20Product%20Brochure4AA0-4236ENW.pdf I am trying to figure out how this relates to the 802.3a standard, as it seems that it would give me what I want (one server has 2 nics, each of which is connected to separate switches, together forming a single logical nic which would provide the happy redundancy we want), but I guess I am looking for someone familiar with this concept and could add to it.

• HLSL - Creating Shadows in 2D

  The way that I create shadows is by the following technique: http://www.catalinzima.com/2010/07/my-technique-for-the-shader-based-dynamic-2d-shadows/ But I have questions to HLSL. The way that I currently do it is, I have a black and white image, where Black means 'object', and white means 'nothing'. I then distort the image like in the tutorial. I do this with a pixel shader, but instead of rendering to the screen, I render to a texture, back to my application. I then take this, and create the shadows, and then send it back to the graphics card to undo the distortion, after the shadow has been added - this comes back and I have a stencil of shadow. I can put this ontop of the original image and send them back to the graphics card, which then puts them on the screen. To me this is alot of back and forth. Is there a way i can avoid this? The problem that I am having is that I need to basically go through all positions in the texture 3 times, and use the new new texture every time instead of the orginal one. I tried to read up on Passes, but i don't think that i am heading in the right direction there. Help?

• nginx 1.2.3 installed but remains at 1.1.19

• Sending mail to local address crashes web server (sendmail)

  When trying to send mail automatically from a script at example.com via PHP's mail() to [email protected], the Apache server throws an Internal Error. I believe internally it is configured to use sendmail. The message gets dropped into ~/dead.letter and the general error log reads: [Wed May 12 11:26:45 2010] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] malformed header from script. Bad header=/home/example/dead.letter... S: /home/example/www/test.php Trying any other address, not @example.com, works just fine. I have googled and serverfaulted for solutions, but they all require to edit configuration files in /etc/mail and similar system places, which is not an option, since this problem occurs on a shared host in which I only have access to ~/. Does anyone have a suggestion?

This is an excellent introduction to C# programming and a manual for those with experience. Having read through book, I am very impressed by its practical approach to C#. I cannot improve on the by-line "Get started on your C# journey with an expert by your side leading by example" Adam Freeman teaches C# by precept and example. I suspect he drives a Volvo C30 as it comes up in many of the code examples! Throughout the book there are numerous links back and forth so as to avoid over complicating the current topic. I have have no hesitation in recommending this book both to programmers starting out with C# and to the seasoned professional. It is a book that should be on every C# development team's book shelf.

• An unexpected pleasure from Windows 8

  This post is certainly on the more nuanced side of all the goodness that is Windows 8, but it’s about something that’s really changed my PC usage experience for the better. Besides being a geek and the enjoying all the techno-thrills and chills that go along with sitting in front of a keyboard all day, I really love the forest.  Trees have always been special to me.  The feeling of being in the forest with all the sounds and ambiance, the broken light, the fragrance of the air… it’s paradise to me. As I can’t get there often, due to work, and quite often the heat here in Texas, I’ve found something that can at least partially fill the gap…  When you install Windows 8, you’ll have an app called “Naturespace” from http://www.naturespace.com/ .  It boasts a number of predefined loops in what they call “holographic audio.”  They’re essentially high-tech 3D sound fields recorded in natural environments. After checking them out, I really liked the sound of the “Daybreak” selection: A great benefit is that you don’t have to be in Metro/Modern/Windows App Store mode, in order to keep the sound playing.  To start the day, I click on Daybreak, start it, then go back to the desktop and fire up VS, Chrome, etc. As I work and play, I’m surrounded by this delightful background ambiance which relaxes me and puts my mind at ease. Give it a try.  I think you’ll like it.  And no, you don’t need ear buds or headphones to get the benefit.

• How do I point one virtual host to another instance of apache running at another port on the same bo

  Hi there. I've got two apache2 instances running on my box. One came with a bitnami redmine stack which sole purpose is to host Redmine at host:8080/redmine. The other apache instance is running with php and such and is where I specify all the VHosts for my domains. Now I'd like to point redmine.somedomain.com at www.somedomain.com:8080/redmine so that redmine is accessible through a subdomain and on port 80. Redmine is a Ruby on Rails app and runs with Phusion Passenger so I can't just point the vhost to the htdocs directory of the redmine install. How is this done? I've tinkered with ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse but I just can't get it working. All help is greatly appreciated.

• Advantages and Disadvantages of the Waterfall Methodology

  In my personal opinion I believe the waterfall method is one of the worst methodologies to use when developing larger systems because it leaves is no room for mistakes. As the name implies the waterfall methodology does not allow  for projects to go back up stream to recover from design errors, missing and/or limited requirements. In addition, hidden bugs are not usually found until the testing phase. This can prove to be very costly and time consuming to the developer and the client. According to NCycles.com, the waterfall methodology structures a project into separate stages with defined deliverables from each phase. Define Design Code Test Implement Document and Maintain The advantages found by Ncycle.com to this methodology are: Ease in analyzing potential changes  Ability to coordinate larger teams, even if geographically distributed Can enable precise dollar budget Less total time required from Subject Matter Experts The disadvantages found by Ncycle.com to this methodology are: Lack of flexibility Hard to predict all needs in advance Intangible knowledge lost between hand-offs Lack of team cohesion Design flaws not discovered until the Testing phase References: NCycles.com  (2002). • Migrate wireless settings from xp to windows 7

  I'm trying to migrate the settings of my old machine (Win XP Professional) to the new one (Win 7 Professional) and I would like to keep my saved passwords for various wireless networks. How can I export them from XP and import in Win7? A few things that are mentioned a lot in chat groups but don't work: netsh can export/import wlan profiles on Vista/Win7, but not on XP; the Wireless Network Setup Wizard can only export settings for networks created by me; the best method I found was via http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_wep_key_faq.html which can list hex keys, but cannot load them nor save them in a useful format; I would rather not copy them one-by-one by hand.

• Calculating collision force with AfterCollision/NormalImpulse is unreliable when IgnoreCCD = false?

  I'm using Farseer Physics Engine 3.3.1 in a very simple XNA 4 test game. (Note: I'm also tagging this Box2D, because Farseer is a direct port of Box2D and I will happily accept Box2D answers that solve this problem.) In this game, I'm creating two bodies. The first body is created using BodyFactory.CreateCircle and BodyType.Dynamic. This body can be moved around using the keyboard (which sets Body.LinearVelocity). The second body is created using BodyFactory.CreateRectangle and BodyType.Static. This body is static and never moves. Then I'm using this code to calculate the force of collision when the two bodies collide: staticBody.FixtureList[0].AfterCollision += new AfterCollisionEventHandler(AfterCollision); protected void AfterCollision(Fixture fixtureA, Fixture fixtureB, Contact contact) { float maxImpulse = 0f; for (int i = 0; i < contact.Manifold.PointCount; i++) maxImpulse = Math.Max(maxImpulse, contact.Manifold.Points[i].NormalImpulse); // maxImpulse should contain the force of the collision } This code works great if both of these bodies are set to IgnoreCCD=true. I can calculate the force of collision between them 100% reliably. Perfect. But here's the problem: If I set the bodies to IgnoreCCD=false, that code becomes wildly unpredictable. AfterCollision is called reliably, but for some reason the NormalImpulse is 0 about 75% of the time, so only about one in four collisions is registered. Worse still, the NormalImpulse seems to be zero for completely random reasons. The dynamic body can collide with the static body 10 times in a row in virtually exactly the same way, and only 2 or 3 of the hits will register with a NormalImpulse greater than zero. Setting IgnoreCCD=true on both bodies instantly solves the problem, but then I lose continuous physics detection. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? • My php homepage downloads index.php instead of being processed on Gandi.net

  if I go to the homepage of my website http://www.website.com (on a brand new server) the index.php gets donwloaded instead than processed. I don't have the same problem on other folders. my .htaccess reads: AddHandler php5-script .php what could this be? I suspect it's something with php config / or htaccess, but I'm not able to figure it out. help please! edit: I don't know if this helps: it's a wordpress installation, I have this problem only on the public part of the website, not on the admin (that renders correctly)

• Sending Mail on Linux via Bash/Command line

  I'm currently trying to send mails via bash script on linux I searched the internet and found this code: echo "This is my body" | mail -s"this is my header" [email protected] I don't get any response either in the bash nor when I type it directly in the command line. I waited for at least 3 hours now and still got no mail. I just found that the log says stat=Deferred: Connection timed out with backup-mx.mcs.de. when sending to my Mail address but also has some entries with to<[email protected]> and stat=Sent greetings

  I have an Apache server set up to use mod_perl. I have it set up to handle all requests using a Perl module MyModule. Here is part of my httpd.conf: LoadModule perl_module modules/mod_perl.so <Directory /> Order Deny,Allow Allow from all </Directory> PerlModule MyModule <Location /> SetHandler modperl PerlResponseHandler MyModule </Location> This seems to work fine, except top level directory (ie. www.mysite.com/) is not being sent to MyModule. What's going wrong?

• CentOS (rel6) with default python 2.6, but seperate 3.3.5 installation

  I have a CentOS server (rel6) that had python installed (2.6), but I needed a few features in 3.3+. I installed 3.3 into a seperate folder and made a symbolic link to execute it: I installed setup tools: yum install python-setuptools I installed a needed module"pandas" easy_install pandas I executed my pyton script, which encountered an error that required i use a newer version I downloaded and installed Python 3.3.5 to it's own folder so as to not override my default python wget http://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.3.5/Python-3.3.5.tar.xz tar xJf ./Python-3.3.5.tar.xz cd ./Python-3.3.5 ./configure --prefix=/opt/python make make install Made s symbolic link to allow me to execute this new python: ln -s /opt/python3.3/bin/python3.3 ~/bin/py The problem is that when I execute the python script with my new py alias, it does not have all the addons needed (explicitly MySQLdb) which the default install does. How do i go about installing the MySQLdb module, or any for that matter, to be reachable or useable for the new Python 3.3.5 installation? Or is there a way to make the current modules in 2.6 available to 3.3.5 as well?

• What is the "right" way to host CUPS behind Apache 2

  I have tried some combinations of ProxyPass, ProxyPassReverse and ProxyHTMLURLMap but I'm still not having much luck. I just would like to be able to hit the printers in CUPS by going to www.printerhost.com/printers/printername rather than having to add a port 631 or have CUPS listen on port 80. • Camera Collision inside the room model

  I am having a problem in Calculating the camera collision for my Room model which consists of sofa, tables and other models. The users shall be moving the camera front, back, rotating so i need to make sure that the camera does not collide with any of the models with in the room. I have treated all my models inside the room by BoundingBox[] and the camera by BoundingSphere. So, far i have implemented collision by looking into the tutorial from http://www.toymaker.info/Games/XNA/html/xna_model_collisions.html which was great. But, I guess the problem lies in the Transformation part. I debugged and found some points to be at Vector(-XXX,-XXX,-XXX) where X is digit. Also i found my radius of some models where too large(in thousand, i just looked into its radius value before converting to BoundingBox). Do I need to scale the model for collision???
