• One Database Field to Hold Survey Answer

  Skipping the question of whether this is bad design (and the question of why I would want/need to do this), I'm just wondering if my 'math' is right... I have n things that need to be put in order (n is always less than 5): thing1 thing2 thing3 ... and I'd like to store these results in a single integer for thing. My initial thought is that (obviously the code will not look like this): thing = thing1 * 1 + thing2 * 2 + thing3 * 4 + thing5 * 8 will always give me a unique value, and that any value for thing will always translate back to its values for thing1...thingn. Is this correct?

I don't think to split Visitors to two tables like Impressions and Click is a good idea because again i would need to have Visitors with two more tables thanks

  I'm trying to make a menu in advance to be seen whether there is a double nesting. <ul class="parent"> <li class="child"></li> <li class="child"> <ul slass="nesting"> <li></li> <li></li> </ul> </li> <li class="child"></li> </ul> So ul class="nesting" hidden by default but appears during the hover of li class="child". • ASP.NET Template Selector/Builder - Dynamic CMS

  I am currently building my own CMS for various reasons that could take a long to explain... However i am looking for a dynamic solution to create templates for pages within the CMS and all areas must be editable via the administration area, maybe large text areas broken into multiple areas, text and image area on a page etc. Following on from the above i would like to create the following: Create a new page (selecting a pre-defined template like below) http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9872/nestedpages.png and then upon editing the page it would have created as many text editors required for each editable region or a file upload control for an image area for example. i am thinking of using nested masterpages for the design elements, just unsure the best-practice way to achieve the above (db structure etc) I somehow hope this provides enough information but are happy to answer any questions you may have. I have a entities as BaseEntity --Which contains user login info like createdBy,createdTime,EditedBy,editedTime Employee -- which contains employee information like name,address,etc... RegularEmployee --which contains salary ,bonus tht kind of fields and ContactEmployee -- which contains HourlyRate,contactPeriod etc.... My inheritance structure is BaseEntity <--- Employee <---- RegularEmployee (i.e. Employee extends BaseEntity and RegularEmployee extends Employee ContractEmployee also extend Employee Class ). How to design database structure in this case considering all the tables have id and version fields (all tables should at least have these two fields).

• Drupal vs FatWire - Any thoughts?

  Hi folks, a company I am working for is considering the usage of a CMS, apparently two of the suggested CMSs are Drupal and FatWire. FatWire is proprietary and quite expensive, therefore it seems that there is a not so big community build around the product. Functionality seems to be extensive, even though a few design choices seem counter-intuitive and long-winded. Drupal instead is open source and has an big community backing the product. There are plenty of books around and usage seems more intuitive. Functionality wise I am unsure on how they compare. The main features that the company's team seem to like are team workflow features and revision control (present in FatWire, even though the implementation seems quite limited). Hopefully some of you guys have been faced with these two products before, and might have a few suggestions up their sleeve. Help would be much appreciated!

  Hello, We have to communicate with a C++ component from a J2ee web application and my proposal involved using JMS server to communicate with the C++ component which is located on other machine. However the developer of the C++ component wants me to open up TCP/IP sockets from the webapplication and communicate over XML. My view is that socket programming in web application is error prone and will not scale well since there is a limited amount of sockets that can be opened up. Please let me have your architecture/design preference on using JMS vs TCP/IP sockets. Thank you

• Why are Objective-C instance variables declared in an interface?

  I'm just getting into Objective-C (Java is my primary OO language). Defining an object's instance variables in the interface instead of the class seems strange. I'm used to an interface being a public API definition with nothing besides method signatures (not counting constants here). Is there some reason that state is defined in an interface (even if it is private) and behaviour is defined in a class. It just seems odd that since objects are state+behavior that the definition would be split into two separate places. Is it a design benefit is some way? A pain in the rear issue that you are just forced to deal with in Objective-C? A non-issue, just different? Any background on why it's done this way? Or can you put object state in a class and I just haven't hit that part in my book yet?

Is there a way to solve the problem?   I am trying to implement a unranked boolean retrieval. For this, I need to construct a tree and perform a DFS to retrieve documents. I have the leaf nodes but I am having difficulty to construct the tree. Eg: query = OR ( AND (maria sharapova) tennis) Result: OR | | AND tennis | | maria sharapova I traverse the tree using DFS and calculate the boolean equivalent of certain document ids to identify the required document from the corpus. Can someone help me with the design of this using python? I have parsed the query and retrieved the leaf nodes for now.

  In software companies I have seen it's really hard to work on very large products where everything depends on everything else. For instance Microsoft works on C#, F#, .NET, WPF, Visual Studio where these things are interconnected. I don't know how many people are involved, but if it's in 100s, how do they keep in sync with everything, so they design and implement features without conflicting with other dependencies and future plans of other products? I am wondering that if MS is able to do this, they must have a very good system. Any guidelines or secrets for MS or non-MS very large software product delivering?

• Trying to get excel 2003 into already made windows form

  good afternoon everyone :) I got sucha dilemma! (hate being new at stuff!) What my problem is is that I have a project that is in full design mode swing right now. I built it using the Windows form.. Anyways, on one of my forms..that I already started building (very painstakingly).. Minds have changed and now what needs to be on that form is either a full excel 2003 workbook..or at the very least..excel worksheet. The problem is that I have not been using studio 2008 for long..and coding experience shows the same. Can someone please tell me how the heck I can put a worksheet or a workbook on that form without starting my whole project over using office forms? Please..go slow with this newbie cuz i really dont know anything and Jargon is confusing me even more :( thanxxXXX :)

  What design pattern might apply to logging? What is normally used in this type of situation? Any good tutorials? I am writing a client-server application using C89 and gcc 4.4.4. I now need to implement some logging feature that will display log messages on the screen as well as log to a file. However, I don't want to display all log messages (warning, error, critical, unrecoverable, debug, etc). Maybe I can set so that it will display just errors and nothing else. For example, the user might not be interested in the debug messages on the screen output.

  Everybody knows that java IO is blocking, and java NIO is non-blocking. In IO you will have to use the thread per client pattern, in NIO you can use one thread for all clients. Now my question follows: is it possible to make a non-blocking design using only the Java IO api. (not NIO) I was thinking about a pattern like this (obviously very simplified); List<Socket> li; for (Socket s : li) { InputStream in = s.getInputStream(); byte[] data = in.available(); in.read(data); // processData(data); (decoding packets, encoding outgoing packets } Also note that the client will always be ready for reading data. What are your opinions on this? Will this be suitable for a server that should at least hold a few hundred of clients without major performance issues?

  Hi, I have the following entities in CoreData: Village - villageID Bookmark - (relation) village There are multiple villages with each an unique villageID. I have a entity Bookmark which only has a relation to a Village entity; it isn't possible to make a reverse relation. Now I would like to get the village entities where there exists a Bookmark relation. I've red something about subqueries, but I can't get it right for this situation. It must be something like: Village.villageID IN (Bookmark.village.villageID) It isn't possible to get first all the Bookmarks and then loop to get all the Villages, because of the design of the framework. Can this be done in CoreData (I presume the answer is "Yes, of course!") and how?

• Continuously reading from a stream in C#?

  I have a Stream object that occasionally gets some data on it, but at unpredictable intervals. Messages that appear on the Stream are well-defined and declare the size of their payload in advance (the size is a 16-bit integer contained in the first two bytes of each message). I'd like to have a StreamWatcher class which detects when the Stream has some data on it. Once it does, I'd like an event to be raised so that a subscribed StreamProcessor instance can process the new message. Can this be done with C# events without using Threads directly? It seems like it should be straightforward, but I can't get quite get my head around the right way to design this.

• Why are IE6 and IE7 not completely showing this div?

  I'm having problems in IE6 and 7 with a div that doesn't complete the bottom padding that is attributed to it, so doesn't appear to finish the div down to the white content area like required. • how do i let text fit to UIButton?

  problem: Button size is enough, however when I change title, the title text cannot fit the button width. Any SDK function can solve this problem, or I need to manually code to solve it? Please refer to following pictures. design in the nib file. initial show in simulator when I change the title text tried some ways before _button.titleLabel.adjustsFontSizeToFitWidth = YES; the way will change my font size. I cannot accept the way. [_button setTitleEdgeInsets:UIEdgeInsetsMake(10.0, 10.0, 0.0,0.0)]; the way change label's position only, not label size. [_button.titleLabel sizeToFit]; result is same with picture(3). [_button sizeToFit]; title moved to upper left corner, and the title still the same result. Just confused, my button size is big enough, why title size is so small?

Class A{ private B b; } Class B{ private C c; } Class C{ private Long val; } assume these are the hibernate persistence classes i am not writing all annotations of mapping with database. now my problem is i want to retrieve results of Class A according to the value of Class C's val property. i tried to fetch it using, Criteria c = Restrictions.eq("b.c.val", value); List l = c.list; it shows could not resolve property. i searched and came to know criteria wont work up to this much depth. i don't want shift to HQL. any idea??

• C++: Is there a way to limit access to certain methods to certain classes without exposing other pri

  I have a class with a protected method Zig::punt() and I only want it to be accessible to the class "Avocado". In C++, you'll normally do this using the "friend Avocado" specifier, but this will cause all of the other variables to become accessible to "Avocado" class; I don't want this because this breaks encapsulation. Is what I want impossible, or does there already exist an obscure trick out there that I can use to achieve what I want? Or possibly alternative class design patterns that'll achieve the same thing? Thanks in advance for any ideas!
