  My server (Centos 4.8) keeps shooting up in load. Its a shared hosting server with Cpanel/WHM. How can I trace the process/user causing this ongoing problem? I use top, but it shows nothing that stands out for a particular script from a particular user. I have suPHP enabled with PHP 5.3x and MySQL 5 as well.

• Use CompiledQuery.Compile to improve LINQ to SQL performance

  After reading DLinq (Linq to SQL) Performance and in particular Part 4  I had a few questions. If CompiledQuery.Compile gives so much benefits, why not to do it for all Linq To Sql queries? Is any essential disadvantages of compiling all select queries? What are conditions, when compiling makes whose performance, for how much percentage? World be good to have default on application config level or on DBML level to specify are all select queries to be compiled? And the same questions about Entity Framework CompiledQuery Class. However in comments I’ve found answer  of the author ricom 6 Jul 2007 3:08 AM Compiling the query makes it durable. There is no need for this, nor is there any desire, unless you intend to run that same query many times. SQL provides regular select statements, prepared select statements, and stored procedures for a reason.  Linq now has analogs. Also from 10 Tips to Improve your LINQ to SQL Application Performance   If you are using CompiledQuery make sure that you are using it more than once as it is more costly than normal querying for the first time. The resulting function coming as a CompiledQuery is an object, having the SQL statement and the delegate to apply it.  And your delegate has the ability to replace the variables (or parameters) in the resulting query. However I feel that many developers are not informed enough about benefits of Compile. I think that tools like FxCop and Resharper should check the queries  and suggest if compiling is recommended. • Utility to Script SQL Server Configuration

  I wrote a small utility to script some key SQL Server configuration information. I had two goals for this utility: Assist with disaster recovery preparation Identify configuration changes I’ve released the application as open source through CodePlex. You can download it from CodePlex at the Script SQL Server Configuration project page. The application is a .NET 2.0 console application that uses SMO. It writes its output to a directory that you specify.  Disaster Planning ScriptSqlConfig generates scripts for logins, jobs and linked servers.  It writes the properties and configuration from the instance to text files. The scripts are designed so they can be run against a DR server in the case of a disaster. The properties and configuration will need to be manually compared. Each job is scripted to its own file. Each linked server is scripted to its own file. The linked servers don’t include the password if you use a SQL Server account to connect to the linked server. You’ll need to store those somewhere secure. All the logins are scripted to a single file. This file includes windows logins, SQL Server logins and any server role membership.  The SQL Server logins are scripted with the correct SID and hashed passwords. This means that when you create the login it will automatically match up to the users in the database and have the correct password. This is the only script that I programmatically generate rather than using SMO. The SQL Server configuration and properties are scripted to text files. These will need to be manually reviewed in the event of a disaster. Or you could DIFF them with the configuration on the new server. Configuration Changes These scripts and files are all designed to be checked into a version control system.  The scripts themselves don’t include any date specific information. In my environments I run this every night and check in the changes. I call the application once for each server and script each server to its own directory.  The process will delete any existing files before writing new ones. This solved the problem I had where the scripts for deleted jobs and linked servers would continue to show up.  To see any changes I just need to query the version control system to show many any changes to the files. Database Scripting Utilities that script database objects are plentiful.  CodePlex has at least a dozen of them including one I wrote years ago. The code is so easy to write it’s hard not to include that functionality. This functionality wasn’t high on my list because it’s included in a database backup.  Unless you specify the /nodb option, the utility will script out many user database objects. It will script one object per file. It will script tables, stored procedures, user-defined data types, views, triggers, table types and user-defined functions. I know there are more I need to add but haven’t gotten around it yet. If there’s something you need, please log an issue and get it added. Since it scripts one object per file these really aren’t appropriate to recreate an empty database. They are really good for checking into source control every night and then seeing what changed. I know everyone tells me all their database objects are in source control but a little extra insurance never hurts. Conclusion I hope this utility will help a few of you out there. My goal is to have it script all server objects that aren’t contained in user databases. This should help with configuration changes and especially disaster recovery.

• Why do hosts prefer Linux to Windows Server?

  So far I see a HUGE majority of hosts provide only Linux shared hosting, providing Windows only to VPS (or even to only dedicated servers). Why is it so? While Windows is a lot more expensive than Linux (though it depends on a lot of factors, not just initial and support license cost), it also provides ASP.NET, IIS and of course, Microsoft SQL Server. I know in the past it might have been because of cPanel being Linux only but now they have a Windows version. But still, why is Linux predominantly used on shared hosting? PHP works on both systems. IIS can be (and probably is) faster. MySQL runs on both systems as well. cPanel has a Windows version. Python, Perl, Ruby, all run on Windows as well. You even have MS SQL Server Express, which I find more superior than MySQL in both speed and features. Access is there for low usage requirements, as is SQLite (which is so great for quick small stuff). And with PowerShell you have a good alternative to the Unix shell. EDIT: I am looking for common reasons, I realize each hosting company (and/or it's clients) may have different needs. This becomes very important when you get to VPS or Cloud which give you a full operating system to use.

• Windows Firewall failing after 9-12 hours?

  I have 2 VM servers in the exact same NIC configuration: Server 2003 R2, one NIC connected to private (hardware firewall) network in a 10.x private address space, and one NIC connected straight to public internet. Windows Firewall is enabled for the Public Internet NIC only. Now, what doesn't make sense - this fails generally after 9-12 hours. It's not exact, but once or twice a day, traffic will just stop on the Internet NIC. No event log entries when it happens, and restarting the Windows Firewall service as well as stopping or restarting IPSec Services (just for fun) has no effect. Once the server is rebooted, everything is fine again for another 1/2 day. Any suggestions?

• Need disc image help pronto!

  I recently got a job as a junior network administrator. Last week the senior admins did their yearly reinstall of server 2003, exchange, drivers etc on the main server. I've been asked to back up the disc so that next year they can just copy over the pre-made image. What tools can i use to achieve both the creation of the entire servers HDD image and loading it back on (id like to test it in the sandbox.) To impress them, a program that is free is preferable. And maybe a tool that can do it all from booting the program off of a USB drive.

• Automated backups for Windows Azure SQL Database

  One of the questions that I've often been asked is about how you can backup databases in Windows Azure SQL Database. What we have had access to was the ability to export a database to a BACPAC. A BACPAC is basically just a zip file that contains a bunch of metadata along with a set of bcp files for each of the tables in the database. Each table in the database is exported one after the other, so this does not produce a transactionally-consistent backup at a specific point in time. To get a transactionally-consistent copy, you need a database that isn't in use.The easiest way to get a database that isn't in use is to use CREATE DATABASE AS COPY OF. This creates a new database as a transactionally-consistent copy of the database that you are copying. You can then use the export options to get a consistent BACPAC created.Previously, I've had to automate this process by myself. Given there was also no SQL Agent in Azure, I used a job in my on-premises SQL Server to do this, using a linked server configuration.Now there's a much simpler way. Windows Azure SQL Database now supports an automated export function. On the Configuration tab for the database, you need to enable the Automated Export function. You can configure how often the operation is performed for you, and which storage account will be used for the backups.It's important to consider the cost impacts of this as well. You are charged for how ever many databases are on your server on a given day. So if you enable a daily backup, you will double your database costs. Do not schedule the backups just before midnight UTC, as that could cause you to have three databases each day instead of one.This is a much needed addition to the capabilities. Scott Guthrie also posted about some other notable changes today, including a preview of a new premium offering for SQL Database. In addition to the Web and Business editions, there will now be a Premium edition that has reserved (rather than shared) resources. • Managing persistent data on an Amazon EC2 web server

  I've just started trying out Amazon's EC2 service for running an asp.net web app which uses a SQL Server 2005 Express database. I have some questions about how to configure and operate it best for reliability, and I'm hoping to tap into some collective wisdom here as this is my first foray into EC2. Here's how I have it configured currently: OS: Windows 2003 SQL Server Express 2005 Web content stored on an EBS Volume (E Drive) Database Data stored on an EBS Volume (E Drive) Database backups to "C Drive" and then copied off to S3. Elastic IP Address attached to the production instance. Now when I make a change to the OS configuration, I make a new AMI using the bundle feature. Unfortunately, I found that this results in significant downtime. While the bundle is created and the new instance is started. It seems that when I'm ready to make a new AMI, I should: Start up a new temporary instance. Detach the EBS volume from the production instance. Detach the IP Address from the production instance. Attach the IP Address to the temporary instance. Attach the EBS volume to the temporary instance. Create an AMI from the production instance. After the production instance restarts, reverse the attach/detach steps to put it back in production. Is this the right order of events to prevent any chance to corrupt the EBS volume? Will the EBS volume become corrupt if I detach it while a database Write is taking place? Should I snapshot the EBS volume of the production instance and attach it to the temporary instance instead? Or could taking a snapshot of the EBS volume while it's in use cause corruption? Any suggestions to improve the reliability and operations?

• Server unstable after a WHM automated update

  I have a server with WHM/cPanel server a website (Apache, PHP, MySQL) and a few days ago WHM performed some kind of update on itself (there are new icons and new appearance overall). Ever since that day, my site has been running slow for shorts periods of time, but several times a day. That never happend before. Is there some common cause for this? Something that WHM does when it does an update? I'm really clueless about this problem.

• How do I set up my Ubuntu Server to let my Mac connect with FTP?

  I have a server running Ubuntu Server 10.04, and I installed vsftpd on it. Now, I am able to connect to it with only one program which is for windows only (bleh) The program is WinSCP. I cannot connect to the server with any other application, such as the Ubuntu connect to server, Mac connect to server, FileZilla, Web Browser, or anything that is not WinSCP. I need to be able to connect with other applications because I mainly use a Mac to manage the server. I don't want to install wine on my Mac.

• Cross-Forest Trust

  I am looking at testing a cross-domain trust we can have two domain controllers (with different forests and domain names) setup so we can move everyone onto the new domain. We do NOT run exchange on site and we do not have any links to O365 to AD currently. Onto the problem: I have setup two DCs in a Virtual Machine: They are on the same network 192.168.0.* The Windows 2003 server: Name: OLDSRVR "Clone" of our current Domain Controller IP: 192.168.0.1 Domain: internal.test.com The Windows 2012 server: Name: ADCTEST01 Brand new domain setup from scratch separate to internal.test.com Domain: internal.test2.com IP: 192.168.0.2 OLDSRVR can only see ADCTEST if it has dynamic IP set. If I set a static IP it cannot see it. If I try using the dynamic IP and try to join it gets to the end then complains "??The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" Any ideas?

For convenience I give a KVM virtual machine root permission to each user. But obviously the linux server has only one IP. How can I deliver the external requests to corresponding virtual machine? • Router reporting failed admin login attempts from home server

  I recently noticed in the logs of my home router that it relatively regularly lists the following entry: [admin login failure] from source 192.168.0.160, Monday, June 20,2011 18:13:25 192.168.0.160 is the internal address of my home server, running Windows Home Server 2011. Is there anyway I can find out what specifically is trying to login to the router? Or is there some explanation for this behaviour? (not sure if this belongs here or on superuser...)
