  I am running 12.04 live from cd and trying to copy some important files from a mounted hard disk to an external disk. (My previous installation of 10.04 crashed and I want to install 12.04, and back up some data before that). When I try to copy files from the mounted disk to the external one, I get the following error: There was an error copying the file into /media/New Volume/L300_Bkp_2012_06_04/pics Error opening file: Permission denied Is this related to the source(mounted hard disk) or the target (external disk)? How do I get around this?

I'm undoubtedly doing something silly here as the username and password and server name work fine in the first code snippet below, just not the second - any help would be appreciated!   I am trying to get some advice on what order I should learn about SQL Server, LINQ, and Entity Framework to be able to better work with ASP.NET Webforms and MVC. From what I've been able to learn so far, many recommend learning LINQ or Entity Framework before learning SQL Server. It also appears that many companies are looking for people with knowledge in LINQ-to-SQL and Entity Framework without mentioning SQL Server. However, my understanding is that LINQ-to-SQL and Entity Framework translate code into SQL Server queries, making this a poor approach. Is there a correct or best order in which to learn these technologies?

• Ogre3D : seeking advices about game files management

  I'm working on a new game, and its related level editor, based on Ogre3D. I was thinking about how i could manage the game files, knowing that Ogre use .mesh files for models, .material for materials/texture information etc... . At first i thought about a common .zip folder decompressed at runtime (the same way Torchlight and Ogre samples do). But this way the game assets become a monolithic archive, loading takes time, and could be difficult to eventually patch them. So, let's say i have a game object named "Cube" i want to load in my program. Going for modularity, what if i create a compressed file (using zlib compression routines) named Cube.extname, containing its sub-files Cube.mesh, Cube.material and so on ? Are there any alternatives or should i stick with compressed objects? PS: Just to clear things, the answer is unrelated to my program code, at the moment i'm using "resources.cfg" pointing to the OgreSDK media directory.

• Video player with good subtitle rendering

  Is there any way to improve the subtitle rendering capabilities of Totem? The subtitles positioning seems to be hard-coded in it and even though the style is user-customizable, it does not confirm to the formatting in subtitle data. In some scenes where writings appear, the subtitles are supposed to appear next to those along with what is being said at that moment. However, on those scenes the translations of text onscreen appears on the default subtitle area with nothing about the things being said. The correct rendering are according to the open-source Windows video player, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. There are no Linux port as far as I'm aware. If VLC's subtitle support is the same as in Windows, it won't work for me, period. Please suggest anyway to improve subtitle rendering in Totem, other video players, or a way to port MPC-HC.

  I have the problem that my ubuntu machine uses the wrong dns server. For some reason he queries localhost for dns records. I have added the dns server in the network settings gui, but /etc/resolv.conf still contains 127.0.0.1 as dns server. Now I tought I could just edit the file by myself, but it explicitly says I should not edit the file by hand. Now, since the network settings GUI didn't generate the file with the right settings, how do I generate a new resolv.conf file by myself?

• How do I configure my 2 RAID drives so I can use it as /home?

  I've installed Ubuntu 11 64-bit to a 2 TB drive. it is on /dev/sda - port 1 of SATA Host Adaptor. This contains /dev/sda1 (1 MB boot), /dev/sda2 (2TB EXT4), /dev/sda3 8.6GB SWAP. I also have: /dev/sdb 2TB RAID COMPONENT /dev/sdc 2TB RAID COMPONENT which also show as /dev/dm-0 not partitioned /dev/dm-2 not partitioned which is mounted as /media/RAID_HOME I'm completely stumped as to how to use this version of Ubuntu to make these drives seem as just one raid mirrored drive and then how to transfer /home onto it.

• How to check that I have recovered from Penguin 2.0?

  I have 3 year old website which has been hit by Penguin 2.0 in May. The website traffic dropped almost 30%. I have been working hard from last 2.5 months on the website and my website's traffic recovered in last week of August. In fact, I am receiving more traffic then ever. When I look at the stats, I find my website's search engine visibility has been improved. It is now appearing for more search queries. My website's impressions have also increased. What I am worried about is that my website is nowhere in top 5 pages for keywords having high competition and carrying the highest search volume. They are few in number but important. Should I consider my current situation as recovery or it's just the partial recovery? If it is only partial, then how come traffic is more then it was before penguin 2.0?

  I am trying to recover data from an old Linux that was installed in a computer on an ATA hard drive. I found a ScanLogic USB-IDE, an ATA adapter to USB 1.0 similar to the one in the picture: and after switching it on, I plugged it into a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. I am used to the drives being automatically mounted, but this one doesn't show up in /media. Wondering which url scheme is more appropriate for a stock market data app (BTW, all queries will be GETs as the client doesn't modify data): Scheme 1 examples: /stocks/ABC/news /indexes/XYZ/news /stocks/ABC/time_series/daily /stocks/ABC/time_series/weekly /groups/ABC/time_series/daily /groups/ABC/time_series/weekly Scheme 2 examples: /news/stock/ABC /news/index/XYZ /time_series/stock/ABC/daily /time_series/stock/ABC/weekly /time_series/index/XYZ/daily /time_series/index/XYZ/weekly Scheme 3 examples: /news/stock/ABC /news/index/XYZ /time_series/daily/stock/ABC /time_series/weekly/stock/ABC /time_series/daily/index/XYZ /time_series/weekly/index/XYZ Scheme 4: Something else??? The point is that for any data being requested, the url needs to encapsulate whether an item is a Stock or an Index. • Can't install Ubuntu on a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought a HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop. I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu. But when I inserted the live CD, it showed the Ubuntu start screen and then everything went black. There was no cursor, everything just stayed black like the screen was switched off (but the system is running). When I tried to install from the USB, it said Live media is not found. Sometimes it also gave me a black screen like the CD. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

  I've tried reading through guides for preseeding and customization, but I did not understand how and where to modify which options. I can only comfortably learn through practical examples, for which I ask this question. I am looking into preseeding and customizing solution to just do a few specific tasks: Completely rewrite the packages installed by default, much like minimal installs and with the --no-install-recommends flag of apt-get. Add a few proprietary applications to the default install list Automatically install and mount proprietary drivers on install and live session Edit the default configuration files for applications installed by default Specify partitions along with permission Modify the package pool in the installer media (CD/DVD/USB), preferably using command line tools similar to apt-get and aptitude. Can anyone please tell me how to configure preseed option to only do the above? NB I do not understand the GPG part after adding/removing packages in the pool. PS The third point is of particular importance.

• What use is a Business Logic Layer (BLL)?

  In reading up on good practice for database applications I've frequently come across advocates of so-called "business logic layers" and I'm trying to decide if it's best for my project to use one (it's a small personal project). My issue lies in the fact that I can't think of anything for the BLL to do that the DAL can't already handle (executing queries and mapping results to objects), so my BLL just calls the DAL without doing anything itself. Maybe I'm wrong about exactly what the DAL should be doing too. But regardless, what sorts of functionality should be expected of a BLL in a database management application?
