• Determine file creation date in Java

  Hello, There is another similar question to mine on StackOverflow (How to get creation date of a file in Java), but the answer isn't really there as the OP had a different need that could be solved via other mechanisms. I am trying to create a list of the files in a directory that can be sorted by age, hence the need for the file creation date. I haven't located any good way to do this after much trawling of the web. Is there a mechanism for getting file creation dates? Thanks, Todd BTW, currently on a Windows system, may need this to work on a Linux system as well. Also, I can't guarantee that a file naming convention would be followed where the creation date/time is embedded in the name.

• Check For Duplicate Records VS try/catch Unique Key Constraint

  I have a database table that has a Unique Key constraint defined to avoid duplicate records from occurring. I'm curious if it is bad practice to NOT manually check for duplicate records prior to running an INSERT statement on the table. In other words, should I run a SELECT statement using a WHERE clause that checks for duplicate values of the record that I am about to INSERT. If a record is found, then do not run the INSERT statement, otherwise go ahead and run the INSERT.... OR Just run the INSERT statement and try/catch the exception that may be thrown due to a Unique Key violation. I'm weighing the two perspectives and can't decide which is best- 1. Don't waste a SELECT call to check for duplicates when I can just trap for an exception VS 2. Don't be lazy by implementing ugly try/catch logic VS 3. ???Your thoughts here??? :)

• How to validate HTTP request headers before receiving request body using WCF

  I'm implementing a REST service using WCF which will be used to upload very large files. The HTTP headers in this request will communicate information which will be validated prior to allowing the upload to proceed (things like permissions, available disk space, etc). It's possible this validation will fail resulting in an error response. I'd like to do this validation prior to the client sending the body of the request, so it has a chance to detect failure before uploading potentially gigabytes of data. RESTful web services use the HTTP 1.1 Expect: 100-continue in the request to implement this. For example Amazon S3's REST API can validate your key and ACLs in response to an object PUT operation, returning 100 Continue if all is well, indicating you may proceed to send your data. I've rummaged around the WCF documentation and I just can't see a way to accomplish this without doing some pretty low-level hooking into the HTTP request processing pipeline. How would you suggest I solve this problem?

  I use CGContexts to allow the user to draw in my application, here's an example: CGContextSetLineCap(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(), kCGLineCapRound); CGContextSetLineWidth(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(), size); CGContextSetRGBStrokeColor(UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(),r,g,b,a); I want the user to have an "eraser" tool that actually erases - it can't draw white (that would add white to the image, which may not have a white background) or alpha (or else the stroke won't do anything). Is there a way to do this? Perhaps replacing contents of a CGContext or UIImage?

  Hi, I have been tasked with setting up TFS 2010 for my company. After setting up TFS and configuring the basics (New collection, project, adding solution to souce control), i thought i would try out some unit testing with it. I configured the Build Controller and Agent for my solution and added in some basic unit tests. These ran ok and did exactly what i would expect (i broke the build then ran the Build Definition, and it showed me where the errors were). My question is, what advantages (apart from the "Black box call stack logger") does Test Manager have over the TFS builds? Is it worth the extra effort of setting that up and configuring it? Only knowing the basics of what Test Manager is, that may be a very naive question to ask, and i appoligise if it is. Thanks

• Pre-generating GUIDs for use in python?

  I have a python program that needs to generate several guids and hand them back with some other data to a client over the network. It may be hit with a lot of requests in a short time period and I would like the latency to be as low as reasonably possible. Ideally, rather than generating new guids on the fly as the client waits for a response, I would rather be bulk-generating a list of guids in the background that is continually replenished so that I always have pre-generated ones ready to hand out. I am using the uuid module in python on linux. I understand that this is using the uuidd daemon to get uuids. Does uuidd already take care of pre-genreating uuids so that it always has some ready? From the documentation it appears that it does not. Is there some setting in python or with uuidd to get it to do this automatically? Is there a more elegant approach then manually creating a background thread in my program that maintains a list of uuids?

  Good afternoon, I am generating a typed dataset from a stored procedure. The stored procedure may contain something like: select t1.colA, t2.colA AS t2colA from t1 inner join t2 on t1.key = t2.key When I generate the typed dataset, the dataset knows whether t1.colA allows NULLs, but it always puts FALSE in AllowDBNull for t2.colA even if t2.colA allows NULL. Is this because the column is aliased? Is there any way, from SQL, to hint to VS that the column allows NULL? We currently have to go in and update the column's AllowDBNull if we regenerate the table. Thanks in advance. Christian

  Well, I tried to ask this question as a comment on this question, but I thought that maybe no one will notice it, so I decided to ask it as a separate one. The question is about how to do real-time GPS tracking system things; if we have the following scenario: Rather than connecting a GPS receiver to a PC, the user will have a mobile device with an integrated GPS receiver. Location data will be sent over mobile network using GPRS data connection to a server side. The data will be processed and a KML path file will be created and updated on time intervals and used to track the user using Google Earth. The question is: what is the best method to accomplish this scenario for the server side; is it a web service, a web application, a windows service, a windows application or what exactly? Taking into account that the system will serve a number of users simultaneously, and that more users may use the system in the future(scalability issues). • how to word wrap a QTreeWidgetItem

  hello all, i have to populate a QTreeWidget with items (or children of items) that may happen to be too long to fit in a single line, so i'm looking for a way to word wrap them. i thought myQTreeWidget.setWordWrap(True) (done via QtDesigner4) would have done the job, but that doesn't seem to be the case. i don't konw if it is relevant, but the tree is enveloped in a splitter frame, so the wrapping should be somehow dynamic to allow resizing of the splitter. Any ideas? I use PyQt4, but hints in any language/binding would be much appreciated. have a good day all.

  I've found recently that for some types of financial calculations that the following pattern is much easier to follow and test especially in situations where we may need to get numbers from various stages of the computation. public class nonsensical_calculator { ... double _rate; int _term; int _days; double monthlyRate { get { return _rate / 12; }} public double days { get { return (1 - i); }} double ar { get { return (1+ days) /(monthlyRate * days) double bleh { get { return Math.Pow(ar - days, _term) public double raar { get { return bleh * ar/2 * ar / days; }} .... } Obviously this often results in multiple calls to the same accessor within a given formula. I was curious as to whether or not the compiler is smart enough to optimize away these repeated calls with no intervening change in state, or whether this style is causing a decent performance hit. • Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. • Suggestion for chkstk.asm stackoverflow exception in C++ with Visual Studio 2010

  I am working with an implementation of merge sort. I am doing C++ Visual Studio 2010. But when I took a array of 300000 integers for timing, it is showing an unhandled stackoverflow exception and taking me to a readonly file named "chkstk.asm". I reduced the size to 200000 and it worked. Again the same code worked with C-free 4 editor (mingw 2.95) without any problem while the size was 400000. Do you have any suggestion to get the code working in Visual Studio? May be the recursion in the mergesort is causing the problem.

  Hey all, I know that this error has been discussed elsewhere on the web, and this may seem like a stupid question, but I've got a very strange situation on my hands here. I'm running on Snow Leopard, with fully updated ruby and rails gems. I created a new rails project (ruby new testing), then navigated into that folder (cd ~/testing), and tried to create a basic scaffolding (ruby script/generate scaffold newtest name:string), and I got this error back: "ruby: No such file or directory -- script/generate (LoadError)" I have searched google thoroughly and tried to implement every solution that I could, but nothing has been working. I don't understand why I have this error or how to fix it. Can anyone help me, please?

• Cleaning up temp folder after long-running subprocess exits

  I have a Python script (running inside another application) which generates a bunch of temporary images. I then use subprocess to launch an application to view these. When the image-viewing process exists, I want to remove the temporary images. I can't do this from Python, as the Python process may have exited before the subprocess completes. I.e I cannot do the following: p = subprocess.Popen(["imgviewer", "/example/image1.jpg", "/example/image1.jpg"]) p.communicate() os.unlink("/example/image1.jpg") os.unlink("/example/image2.jpg") ..as this blocks the main thread, nor could I check for the pid exiting in a thread etc The only solution I can think of means I have to use shell=True, which I would rather avoid: cmd = ['imgviewer'] cmd.append("/example/image2.jpg") for x in cleanup: cmd.extend(["&&", "rm", x]) cmdstr = " ".join(cmd) subprocess.Popen(cmdstr, shell = True) This works, but is hardly elegant, and will fail with filenames containing spaces etc.. Basically, I have a background subprocess, and want to remove the temp files when it exits, even if the Python process no longer exists.

• Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

  I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that.   I'm starting using Qt in my application. My application is MFC based. I want to draw some QGraphicsItems in my currect MFC view, is it possible? You may say that it could be done by hosting QGraphicsView with QWinWidget in the MFC view, that don't work, however. Because my Canvas (MFC view) supports zooming and rotating while the QGraphicsView itself don't. When I zooming the QGraphicsItem, the QGraphicsView shows scroll bar instead of enlarging itself. • Is there a good charting library for iPhone?

  I have a need to render and display charts (bar charts for now, but more types may be needed later) in an iPhone app I'm working on. I've done some looking around and it doesn't look like there are any really good, mature charting libraries for iPhone yet. I've also looked for something written for Cocoa on the Mac that can be adapted, but haven't found anything great yet. Anybody dealt with this before? Any recommendations? I did find Core Plot, but it seems to be in the early stages of development. I have some data (as views as selects for data originating in tables from other schemas), which other database may reference using various means including database synonyms & links. • Identify cause of hundreds of AJP threads in Tomcat

  We have two Tomcat 6.0.20 servers fronted by Apache, with communication between the two using AJP. Tomcat in turn consumes web services on a JBoss cluster. This morning, one of the Tomcat machines was using 100% of CPU on 6 of the 8 cores on our machine. We took a heap dump using JConsole, and then tried to connect JVisualVM to get a profile to see what was taking all the CPU, but this caused Tomcat to crash. At least we had the heap dump! I have loaded the heap dump into Eclipse MAT, where I have found that we have 565 instances of java.lang.Thread. Some of these, obviously, are entirely legitimate, but the vast majority are named "ajp-6009-XXX" where XXX is a number. I know my way around Eclipse MAT pretty well, but haven't been able to find an explanation for it. If anyone has some pointers as to why Tomcat may be doing this, or some hints on finding out why using Eclipse MAT, that'd be appreciated!
