• UPK Professional Customer Success Story: Medtronic

  In case you missed the live event, be sure to listen to last week's UPK Customer iSeminar featuring Medtronic. This was the first iSeminar in our quarterly series to showcase UPK Professional (UPK and Knowledge Pathways). Donna Miller and Staci Gilbert gave viewers an inside look at samples of Medtronic's content as they shared their experiences, methodology and best practices for use of the solution. Here are some highlights of the call: • Medtronic initially purchased UPK Professional to support a multi-year, global SAP rollout for 9,000 end users located in 24 countries. • As time went on, they expanded their use of UPK Professional to include several of their other enterprise applications: PeopleSoft, Siebel CRM, Hyperion Financial Management, a number of SAP bolt-ons, Documentum, TrackWise, and many others. • In combination with their Saba LMS, UPK Professional has allowed Medtronic to create, deploy, track and certify consistent end user training for critical transactions and processes across their organization worldwide - essential for a company in a heavily regulated industry. • For key pieces of content or certain end user populations, some Medtronic business units localize/translate the global UPK content. Staci demonstrated examples of their SAP content which has been translated into Japanese. • In the live SAP environment, end users rely on UPK's context sensitive in-application performance support. Medtronic has found this to be very helpful post go-live, giving just-in-time support so end users are confident in a new system or when performing tasks they don't often touch (at quarter or year end). UPK also serves as Medtronic's internal Google. • Medtronic has realized savings on many fronts: reduction in support calls due to in-application performance support, elimination of their training clients, and speedier training (1.5 days rather than 5-7 days) of temporary workers by moving from ILT to a blended solution that includes UPK simulations for eLearning.   To make the most effective use of a portal and content management platform, personalization is a critical component of delivering the most value to end users. Regardless of what type of constituents you may be serving, content relevance is critical to support business goals like self-service, communication within a geographically distributed organization, lead generation and customer loyalty effectively. This especially holds true when serving external parties, as they generally have a lower threshold for digging through your site to locate a particular item of interest and are apt to leave or dial a helpdesk if their efforts cannot locate the relevant information. Optimal delivery of content can be achieved through a variety of methods, but it is generally a blend of security and filtering via meta data that can drive the most return with the least amount of upfront effort and ongoing upkeep. In a portal environment various platform components have their strong suits and by combining the capabilities of enterprise portal and content platforms much of the groundwork for personalization can be achieved in a configuration-based manner. • How To Hide YouTube Logo In Video Embeds

  YouTube is the most popular video sharing site where you find videos shared by common users to big organizations sharing their training materials, demos and live casts. Lets an assume an organization wants to upload training/product demo videos to YouTube and embed them on their corporate website.  Would not it be nice if they can hide the YouTube logo from the embedded videos? Definitely Yes. To remove the YouTube logo you need to do a small change to the embed script before using it on your site. Add the flag modestbranding=1 as shown in the script below Here is a YouTube video embedded in this post without the logo. The catch is when logo is hidden the player shows text YouTube as a text overlay at top right corner when you hover the mouse. Hope Google will let us hide even that in the near future.   Earlier this month, I had a fantastic time presenting at DevReach 2013, in Sofia, Bulgaria on Oct 1, 2013. DevReach strives to be the premier developer conference in Central and Eastern Europe. It is organized annually in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 8th edition of the conference is moving to a new and bigger venue: Sofia Event Center. In my career, I have presented over 9 different countries (India, USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand), this was the first time for me to present in Europe. DevReach was perfect places to start my journey in Europe as an evangelist. The event was one of the most organized event I have ever come across in my life. The DevRech organization team had perfected every minute detail of the event to perfection. After the event was over I had the opportunity to see Sofia for one day.   It’s a really exciting time for the extended WebLogic community as we are enjoying seeing the impressive results of Exalogic deployments.  At Oracle Open World, a lot of people I spoke with came away impressed with the raw performance.  However, Exalogic offers a lot more than just raw performance.  I had the pleasure of working with Ram Sivaram during one of the Exalogic training sessions in Santa Clara.  In this video diary, he shows the Exalogic machine arrive on the shipping dock, get unpacked, wired up, powered on, configured, and installed with a WebLogic Server cluster in just about 10 hours.  I’ve worked with customers in the past that have taken several weeks or longer to get an environment ready after the hardware arrives.  This typically involves many different specialized teams in their organization.  Mohamad Afshar just wrote a great explanation of the benefit of Engineered Systems and contrasting that to the status quo.  Being able to streamline deployment of middleware capacity will have a lot of value for customers shortening time to deployment.  Thanks for the video Ram, you’ve set a high bar, we’ll see if anyone can top your time!

• VirtualBox 3.2 Release

  The latest version of VirtualBox is out - version 3.2.  It is the first release as Oracle VirtualBox and there are a lot of new features.  Many of these I see directly impacting the Oracle VDI solution in upcoming releases (just my guess, of course), and I am updating my notebook as I write this. Er... OK - Done!There are enough features that they warrant you taking a look at this two-page VirtualBox Community Bulletin.pdf.  No point in me restating them.If you and your organization haven't tried VirtualBox, or you haven't looked at it in a while, you owe it to yourself to give this a run.  This is small, simple, powerful, software that allows you to do way more than most people would ever need in hosting a Virtual machine on you local machine.  I routinely will do a demo on a two-year-old Macbook running OS X locally, plus a Solaris 10 VM running the Sun Ray server, and a Windows XP VM and hang a couple Sun Rays off of it - and the performance is stellar.You can subscribe to the mailing lists and get access to the Beta releases as they come out as well, if you are into 'bleeding edge'.40,000 downloads a day is the current rate (before this new release), but it will jump for sure now.  Might as well join in!

• What ways are there to determine if an idea for change is viable or not?

  A recent discussion on here about whether or not program windows should still be called screens or if we should have improved terminology got me thinking... Dangerous I know! People as a whole tend to be fairly resistant to change. We get comfortable in our niches and used to the way things are. While some changes lead to good results and improve our lives or the way things are done, others are clearly not enough of a change or overall bad and not even worth attempting. What guides can we use as we program to determine if an improvement (whether it be to coding style, terminology, user interface, language use, etc) is really an improvement or not? I'm sure to some extent nothing will replace the try-it-out approach but are there any tests or guides that can be used to eliminate certain ideas that would eventually turn out to be worthless or a waste of time to pursue? • Inevitable Corporate Bureaucracy

  Top executives of most smaller organizations want their companies to be different from the larger corporations. They want their organizations smaller in size; but bigger in productivity by eliminating red tapes and corporate bureaucracy. When the company is smaller, people often work like firefighters – taking on new business and technology challenges without thinking about any procedures and guidelines. People also tend to wear many hats to accomplish tasks quickly in order to integrate new businesses. For example, software developers in smaller organizations may take on responsibilities of client interactions, requirements gathering, design and development, code deployment, production support, network infrastructure support, database design and maintenance along with countless other duties. In addition, systems in smaller organizations tend to be loosely guarded. So, people often don't follow many procedures in order to setup environments and implement technical projects. It's not uncommon to change code and deploy without anyone realizing. Similarly, business requirements may also get defined in an informal manner without any type of documentation. As the company grows, everything starts to change significantly impacting people and the overall business process. Suddenly, following procedures become extremely important. Consequently, new roles, guidelines and procedures start to emerge. Everything from business process to technology implementation start to become more and more process oriented. Organizations start to define and document steps, invent procedure to track process and systems level changes, and start restricting access to various systems for security reasons. At the same time, as a growing company start doing businesses with larger clienteles, they are automatically forced to abide by all sorts of industry compliance laws. Moreover, growing companies tend to recruit experienced individuals to fill new roles who usually bring their expertise from larger and more bureaucratic organizations.   Despite the best efforts from the top executives, it seems increased number of procedures and guidelines as well as new recruits automatically contribute to the evolution of corporate bureaucracy. Maybe, corporate bureaucracy is an inevitable side effect of a growing organization.
