solution for an offline server

I'm trying to setup a development server at work that will ideally be able to test drive a couple of projects in PHP, Rails, or Django (not always running at the same time). I develop the apps locally on a Mac and then I'll put the projects up on this server for testing with my actual users (non-techies) before deploying to a production server. My problem is that we have a very poor internet connection (almost negligible) at work and doing the usual apt-get/yum/ports (make, clean, install) processes for setting up servers always get their packages from online repositories somewhere. I know I could probably download the source and then compile them myself but that's going to be too much of a hassle for me. I'm thinking about two solutions: Plan A: Run a server VM on my Mac and then use this VM as the source repository for the offline server. I've read about Ubuntu's apt-proxy and it seems to be good enough though I haven't tried it yet. I'm not sure if this is possible but can I simply do apt-get install nginx --downloadonly so that the package and its dependencies will be downloaded into my VM and my server can use the VM as the source repo for apt-get? Plan B: Run a server VM on my Mac (which I can setup/update easily when I'm home) and then clone the VM to the offline development server. Maybe I should simply make the server a VM host so I can simply copy the VM over. I think this is okay for the first-time setup but subsequent updates will take too long (cloning the VM image). If I was working on Windows, I imagine it'd be easier because most services have an installer file that I can download and then run at the server. If you could suggest another way, it would be much appreciated. Update: From Michael Hampton's answer, I found a possible solution which is apt-cacher. I also found this page on Ubuntu's website. I wonder if there is a better tool than this one.

Debian - Problems Unmounting External Hard Drives

I recently installed Debian Testing on a new laptop and I just noticed that I am having some issues with unmounting external hard drives. I am using Mate Desktop 1.8.1. With the 1st drive, if I right click on the drive and select “safely remove”: The drive unmounts, spins down, immediately spins back up an remounts. Unable to unmount. With the 2nd drive, if I right click on the drive and select “safely remove”: The drive unmounts but does not spin down. With the 3rd drive, if I right click on the drive and select “safely remove”: The drive unmounts but does not spin down, immediately spins back up but does not remount, and after 20 seconds, it spins down and stays that way. Behavior is the same on both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. On my last laptop, on which I also used Debian Testing + Mate desktop, the safe removal of drives worked out of the box and I never had an issue with it. The drives would unmount, spin down and stay that way. To remount the drive, one needed to unplug the device and plug it back in. I am unsure how to troubleshoot this issue and I am not sure if it is merely a matter of installing a “missing” package of editing a config file. Thank you in advance.

Subversion: Secure connection truncated

Hi, I'm trying to set-up a subversion server with apache2/webdav access. I've created the repository and configure Apache according to the official book, and I can see the repository in a webbrowser. The browser shows: conf/ db/ hooks/ locks/ Although clicking any of those links gives an empty xml document like: <D:error> <C:error/> <m:human-readable errcode="2"> Could not open the requested SVN filesystem </m:human-readable> </D:error> I've never used subversion before so I assume this is correct? Anyway, when I try to connect via a command line client, it asks for my password, I give it, then I get the (useless) error message: svn: OPTIONS of 'https://svn.mysite.com': Could not read status line: Secure connection truncated (https://svn.mysite.com) The command I'm using is: svn checkout https://svn.mysite.com/ svn.mysite.com Subversion was installed using Ubuntu's package manager. Hard Drive problem: is it the SATA controller or the HDD itself?

I have a Samsung 1.5TB hard drive hooked up to an ECS H55H-I mini-ITX motherboard. I have XBMC 10 (modified Ubuntu 10.04) installed for use as an HTPC. The hard drive encounters occasional errors during normal use which cause it to be remounted read-only. I have updated the BIOS on the motherboard, changed the SATA cable and moved it to different ports on the motherboard, installed and re-installed the OS (including different versions of XBMC and generic ubuntu), all to no avail. I recently ran tests both with badblocks -sv and smartctl -t long. Both reported no errors. This makes me think the motherboard or SATA controller is probably the issue. Does anyone know of any further tests I can do to help narrow this down? The processor is a Core i3. I forget the model number but it's one of the 32nm ones with on-package graphics. There's no discrete video card or optical drive. The power supply is a 150W Rosewill (pretty sure) that came with the case.

Where is SQLite on Nokia N810? How to get?

I need SQLite3 with the TCL interface for a simple command-line app I use on all my PCs and want to use on my new (to me) Nokia N810. But "find" does not find any SQLite on the Nokia N810. Several apps use it, supposedly, like the maps/gps (poi.db), and others. I got sudo gainroot before using find, tried with wildcards * and dot . No luck. I guess it's embedded in the apps that use it? The N810's app manager doesn't offer SQLite. Apt-get has it and then fails with error: "Unable to fetch some archives, ..." The "update" and "--fix-missing" options do not help. I don't really want to get scratchbox and compile SQLite and TCL extension for it from sources. I looked at README and it seems like it might be straightforward. However [1] it's not clear what scratchbox download I would need (there are dozens in the Index of /download/files/sbox-releases/hathor/deb/i386), [2] I've never compiled any C sources successfully before, [3] and the whole mess entails a lot of learning curve for what is a very small one-off personal project. http://www.gronmayer.com/ has a few (sqlite (v. 2.8.17-4), libsqlite0 (v. 2.8.17-4), and libsqlite0-dev (v. 2.8.17-4)) but they appear to part of some huge package, may or may not include the TCL interface, ... and no I don't want to port my tiny app to Python. Is there some option I've overlooked? Must I get scratchbox and compile for ARM myself? Thanks for your time.

Apache downloads php files instead of running their source

I have just recently upgraded PHP 5.3 to 5.4 on my Debian Squeeze server. Now, instead of executing PHP files, Apache just downloads them, which is really bad. When I try to follow these steps, I get "broken packages" upon installing the libapache2-mod-php5 package. Also the answer tells me to add something to my httpd.conf, but it's empty. "No such file or directory"?

Ok, so I have a VDS laying around, and I thought I would turn it into a TF2 game server. When I connect to my server through PuTTY, and use wget to download the package "hldsupdatetool.bin" from Steampowered.com. I go to run it and it says "No such file or directory found". When I use "ls" to see what files are in directory, it lists "hldsupdatetool.bin" as being in the directory. So, why is it saying it's not there? This has been a headache for the past 2 days. unmanaged VPS account; Beginners questions

I have a classified website which uses MySQL, PHP, Solr (java) etc etc... I wonder where I should start after purchasing a VPS package from my provider. There are first of all several packages, I am going with Linux because as far as I know it is the most stable system. But I have never used Linux before! What is Ubuntu, and which version of it should I get? Whats 64bit Ubuntu then? How do I install php, javascript, mysql, java and all that? What is debian, do I need it? What is apache, do I need that? And most importantly, what applications do I need, that I must have? (I mean applications which a beginner would never know was needed, what do you recommend?) After getting the vps, how do I even access it? Do I type in some kind of IP into the browser? Or is it by ftp program? How do I access the so called "terminal"? Please guide me, I am completely new to Linux and VPS! Thanks

Linux 'top' utility widly inaccurate (more so for multi-CPU/core hardware)?

Hi all. After using 'top' for long time, albeit basically, I have grown to distrust it's '% CPU' column reports. I have a 8-core (quad core Intel i7 920 with hyperthreading) hardware, and see some wild numbers when running a process that should not use more than 5% overall. top happily reports 50%, and I suspect it is not so. My question is, is it a known fact that it's inaccurate when several CPUs/cores are present? I used 'mpstat' from the 'sysstat' package, and it's showings are much more conservative, certainly within my expectations. I did press '1' for 'top' to switch it to show all the core and us/sy/io stats, but the numbers are substantially higher than with 'mpstat'... I know that my expectations can be unfound as well, but my gut feeling tells me 'top' is wrong! :-) The reason I need to know is because the process I am monitoring only guarantees quality of service with CPU usage "less than 80%" (however vague that sounds), and I need to know how much headroom I have left. It's a streaming server.

Do I need to install mssql before I can use mssql.so with php on unix?

I didn't install any MSSQL instance on my localhost that runs windows. I just used the xampp package and uncommented the modules used for mssql. The mssql server resides on another Windows Server so I believe I only needed a simple connector module. I hoped that it would be the same for Unix. But whenever I open my site on the unix production server, (i use codeigniter btw) the logs tell me it stops script execution after Database Driver Class Initialized. I am not really familiar on installing apache and friends on unix and I wasn't responsible on how the server was set-up. But it turns out that there is no mssql.so found on the php modules directory so i tried to google for one. While the forums are telling me to just compile the script, I couldn't just do that simply as I have no write access to the server and plus it seems upon installation of php, phpize didn't get installed with it too. Hope someone can shed light to me regarding this. I think its just easier if I can get a mssql.so for PHP 4.4.4

struts2-json-plugin not retrieving json data from action class for Struts-JQuery-Plugin grid

Hello, Im having an issue getting json working with the struts-jquery-plugin-2.1.0 I have included the struts2-json-plugin-2.1.8.1 in my classpath as well. Im sure that I have my struts-jquery-plugin configured correctly because the grid loads, but doesnt load the data its supposed to get from the action class that has been json'ized. The documentation with the json plugin and the struts-jquery plugin leaves ALOT of gaps that I cant even find with examples/tutorials, so I come to the community at stackoverflow. My action class has a property called gridModel thats a List with a basic POJO called Customer. Customer is a pojo with one property, id. I have a factory that supplies the populated List to the actions List property which i mentioned called gridModel. Hi, i'm creating a very simple (hello World quality) web application using spring mvc 3.0. when deploying the application on tomcat 6.0.26 and i try to open http://localhost:8080/protoweb/helloWorld.html i get 404, resource /protoweb/WEB-INF/jsp/helloWorld.jsp is not available. Hi every one I came to know that google maps has deprecated its previous version API v1 and introduced a new version of google maps API v2. I tried out one example by following some links in google any how i am pretty sure that i got the api key correctly by providing the exact hash key code and managed to get the correct api key. IntellIJ editor doesn't appear

I updated my IntellIJ install to the latest version (11.1.4) and now the Editor window doesn't appear. Double-clicking on the file, jump-to-source, nothing happens. No error message, it just doesn't appear. If I double-click on an xml layout file the preview window works, but no Editor window. Have installed and reinstalled; went back to an earlier version and it doesn't work there either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Update: Editor works if I create a new project. Hello In my current company, i am doing a PoC on how we can write a file downloader utility. We have to use socket programming(TCP/IP) for downloading the files. One of the requirements of the client is that a file(which will be large in size) should be transfered in chunks for example if we have a file of 5Mb size then we can have 5 threads which transfer 1 Mb each. I have written a small application which downloads a file. Small Explanation what this file does This class finds the size of the file to be fetched from Sender Depending upon the size of the file it finds the start and end position till the bytes needs to be read. It starts n number of threads giving each thread start,end, sequence number and a list which all the threads share. Each thread reads the number of bytes and creates a ByteArrayWrapper. ByteArrayWrapper objects are added to the list Then i have while loop which basically make sure that all threads have done their work finally it sorts the list based on the sequence number. then the bytes are joined, and a complete byte array is formed which is converted to a file. In this code i am not able to see the benefit. 2) How should i decide how many threads should i create ? 3) Are their any opensource libraries which does that 4) The file which file receiver receives is valid and not corrupted but checksum (i used FileUtils of common-io) does not match. Whats the problem? 5) This code gives out of memory when used with large file(above 100 Mb) i.e. because byte array which is created. How can i avoid? I know this is a very bad code but i have to write this in one day -:). Please suggest any other good way to do this? Thanks Shekhar

NullPointerException, Collections not storing data?

Hi there, I posted this question earlier but not with the code in its entirety. The coe below also calls to other classes Background and Hydro which I have included at the bottom. I have a Nullpointerexception at the line indicate by asterisks. Which would suggest to me that the Collections are not storing data properly. Although when I check their size they seem correct. Edit Contact code worked in 1.6 but doesn't work on Droid 2.1?

Hi All, I had some fairly simple code in my app to invoke Edit Contact activity on a known good contact index that worked in Android 1.6 but is broken for me now in Android 2.1 on the Droid.
