Floats being pushed down in IE8 but not IE7 or Firefox

The page in question is here: http://supportdogs.digitalportals.net/PhotoGallery/16-Events You can see in IE8 that the content is being pushed down under the sidebar. If you view it in IE8 compatibility mode, it doesn't happen, nor does it happen in Firefox. If you browse to a different page in IE8 the issue does not persist. [LaTeX] positions of page numbers, position of chapter headings, chapters AND Table of Contents, Ref

I am writing my PhD thesis (120+ pages) in latex, the deadline is approaching and I am struggling with layout problems. I am using the documentstyle book. I am posting both problems in this one thread because I am not sure if the solution might be related to both problems or not. Problems are: 1.) The page numbers are mostly located on the top-right of each page (this is correct and where I want them to be). However, only on the first page of chapters and on the first page of what I call "special chapters", the page number is located bottom-centered. With "special chapters" I mean: List of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables, References, Index. My university will not accept the thesis like this. The page number must ALWAYS be top-right one each page, even if the page is the first page of a chapter or the first page of something like the List of Contents. How can I fix this? 2.) On the first page of chapters and "special chapters" (List of Contents...), the chapter title is located far too low on the page. This is the standard layout of LaTeX with documentstyle book I think. However, the chapter title must start at the very top of the page! I.e. the same height as the normal text on the pages that follow. I mean the chapter title, not the header. I.e., if there is a chapter called "Chapter 1 Dynamics of foobar under mechanical stress" then that text has to start from the top the page, but right now it starts several centimeters below the top. How can I fix this? Have tried all kinds of things to no effect, I'd be very thankful for a solution! Thanks.

Is there bug in the Matrix.RotateAt method for certain angles? .Net Winforms

Here's the code i'm using to rotate: Dim m As New System.Drawing.Drawing2D.Matrix Dim size = image.Size m.RotateAt(degreeAngle, New PointF(CSng(size.Width / 2), CSng(size.Height / 2))) Dim temp As New Bitmap(600, 600, Imaging.PixelFormat.Format32bppPArgb) Dim g As Graphics = Graphics.FromImage(temp) g.Transform = m g.DrawImage(image, 0, 0) (1) Disposals removed for brevity. (2) I test the code with a 200 x 200 rectangle. (3) Size 600,600 it just an arbitrary large value that I know will fit the right and bottom sides of the rotated image for testing purposes. (4) I know, with this code, the top and left edges will be clipped because I'm not transforming the orgin after the rotate. The problem only occurs at certain angles: (1) At 90, the right hand edge disappears completely. (2) At 180, the right and bottom edges are there, but very faded. (3) At 270, the bottom edge disappears completely. Is this a known bug? If I manually rotate the corners an draw the image by specifying an output rectangle, I don't get the same problem - though it is slightly slower than using RotateAt.

Subversion Partial Export

I have somewhat interesting development situation. The client and deployment server are inside a firewall without access to the Subversion server. But the developers are outside the firewall and are able to use the Subversion server. Right now the solution I have worked out is to update my local copy of the code and then pull out the most recently updated files using UnleashIT. The question is how to get just the updated files out of Subversion so that they can be physically transported through the firewall and put on the deployment server. I'm not worried about trying to change the firewall setup or trying to figure out an easier way to get to the Subversion server from inside the firewall. I'm just interested in a way to get a partial export from the repository of the most recently changed files. Are there any other suggestions? Answer found: In addition to the answer I marked as Answer, I've also found the following here to be able to do this from TortoiseSVN: from http://svn.haxx.se/tsvn/archive-2006-08/0051.shtml * select the two revisions * right-click, "compare revisions" * select all files in the list * right-click, choose "export to..."

The Impossible Layout?

I'm beginning to think this is impossible, but thought I'd ask you guys. Basically it's a 2 column layout, but the "business" wants the following: -Always take up the entire browser window -Accommodate resizing of browser window -Left column will be fixed width, but that width should be flexible from page-to-page. -Left column has a region at the top with fixed height. -Left column has a bottom region. It should take up the remaining vertical space of browser window. If content is very large, it will have a scroll bar just for that region. -Right column should take up remaining horizontal space of browser window. -Right column has a region at the top with fixed height. -Right column has a bottom region. It should take up the remaining vertical space of browser window. If content is very large, it will have a scroll bar just for that region. How do I convert a simple ruby flashcard program into a ROR app?

What I'm trying to do is make a basic flashcard app on rails. At this point, all I'm looking for is the functionality to iterate through a list of flashcards, quiz the user and let the user know if they were right or not. I've made models specifying that Card belongs_to cardlist and that Cardlist has_many cards. I know application logic should go in the controller, but if I were to make a "quiz" action for my Cardlist controller, how would I make it iterate through all the cards? After each "quiz" page generated, I'd need to get an answer back from the user, respond (maybe flash) whether it was right or not and then continue onto the next question. Would any of that logic have to go into the view in order to make sure it's sending back the user inputted answers to the controller?

Am I using the getch() function from the ncurses library incorrectly?

I am writing a Pacman game in c++ using the ncurses library, but I am not able to move the Pacman properly. I have used getch() to move it it up, down, left and right, but it only moves right and does not move anywhere else when I press any other key. This is a code snippet for moving up. perl regular expressions substitution/replacement using variables with special characters

Okay I've checked previous similar questions and I've been juggling with different variations of quotemeta but something's still not right. I have a line with a word ID and two words - the first is the wrong word, the second is right. Edit The problem is that I'm unable to retain the complete words - they get chopped off at the special characters. This code works perfectly fine for words without special characters. How to -accurately- measure size in pixels of text being drawn on a canvas by drawTextOnPath()

I'm using drawTextOnPath() to display some text on a Canvas and I need to know the dimensions of the text being drawn. I know this is not feasible for paths composed of multiple segments, curves, etc. but my path is a single segment which is perfectly horizontal. I am using Paint.getTextBounds() to get a Rect with the dimensions of the text I want to draw. I use this rect to draw a bounding box around the text when I draw it at an arbitrary location. Here's some simplified code that reflects what I am currently doing: // to keep this example simple, always at origin (0,0) public drawBoundedText(Canvas canvas, String text, Paint paint) { Rect textDims = new Rect(); paint.getTextBounds(text,0, text.length(), textDims); float hOffset = 0; float vOffset = paint.getFontMetrics().descent; // vertically centers text float startX = textDims.left; / 0 float startY = textDims.bottom; float endX = textDims.right; float endY = textDims.bottom; path.moveTo(startX, startY); path.lineTo(endX, endY); path.close(); // draw the text canvas.drawTextOnPath(text, path, 0, vOffset, paint); // draw bounding box canvas.drawRect(textDims, paint); } The results are -close- but not perfect. If I replace the second to last line with: canvas.drawText(text, startX, startY - vOffset, paint); Then it works perfectly. Usually there is a gap of 1-3 pixels on the right and bottom edges. The error seems to vary with font size as well. Any ideas? It's possible I'm doing everything right and the problem is with drawTextOnPath(); the text quality very visibly degrades when drawing along paths, even if the path is horizontal, likely because of the interpolation algorithm or whatever its using behind the scenes. I wouldnt be surprised to find out that the size jitter is also coming from there.

What I want is the div that is floated left to be "maximally wide" so that it is as wide as it possibly can be without causing the red div ("I go at the right") to spill over onto the next line. Setting up padding for websites in mobile devices

I had finished this website a while ago but something happened to it and I've now spent all day fixing it and getting it back from scratch as my backup wasn't correctly done. I don't quite understand what it's doing as I've done this technique on many other websites with no troubles, maybe I've looked at this website too long? Here is the website. I'm wanting to put some space on the left and right hand side, however I dont just have one container as I was needing the dark grey bar at 100% of the screen and always under the banner no matter where it was. So there are 4 "containing" divs that I want to have the space. I've placed soem CSS3 media queries in but now I'm getting a gap to the right. I was thinking it was because my background mages are going all the way across but they set at 100% so I'm just not understanding whats going on. It's somethign simple, I'm not seeing it right now.. Faster Insertion of Records into a Table with SQLAlchemy

I am parsing a log and inserting it into either MySQL or SQLite using SQLAlchemy and Python. Right now I open a connection to the DB, and as I loop over each line, I insert it after it is parsed (This is just one big table right now, not very experienced with SQL). I then close the connection when the loop is done. The summarized code is: log_table = schema.Table('log_table', metadata, schema.Column('id', types.Integer, primary_key=True), schema.Column('time', types.DateTime), schema.Column('ip', types.String(length=15)) .... engine = create_engine(...) metadata.bind = engine connection = engine.connect() .... for line in file_to_parse: m = line_regex.match(line) if m: fields = m.groupdict() pythonified = pythoninfy_log(fields) #Turn them into ints, datatimes, etc if use_sql: ins = log_table.insert(values=pythonified) connection.execute(ins) parsed += 1 My two questions are: Is there a way to speed up the inserts within this basic framework? Maybe have a Queue of inserts and some insertion threads, some sort of bulk inserts, etc? When I used MySQL, for about ~1.2 million records the insert time was 15 minutes. With SQLite, the insert time was a little over an hour. Does that time difference between the db engines seem about right, or does it mean I am doing something very wrong?

I have two tables ("Person" and "Application") and I want to display some columns from Person (name and surname) and some from Application (score, position,...). I know how I could do it using sql, but I want to learn more about linq and thus I want to do it using linq. WPF app startup problems

My brain is all over the map trying to fully understand Unity right now. So I decided to just dive in and start adding it in a branch to see where it takes me. Surprisingly enough (or maybe not), I am stuck just getting my darn Application to load properly. It seems like the right way to do this is to override OnStartup in App.cs. I've removed my StartupUri from App.xaml so it doesn't create my GUI XAML. My App.cs now looks something like this: public partial class App : Application { private IUnityContainer container { get; set; } protected override void OnStartup(StartupEventArgs e) { container = new UnityContainer(); GUI gui = new GUI(); gui.Show(); } protected override void OnExit(ExitEventArgs e) { container.Dispose(); base.OnExit(e); } } The problem is that nothing happens when I start the app! I put a breakpoint at the container assignment, and it never gets hit. What am I missing? App.xaml is currently set to ApplicationDefinition, but I'd expect this to work because some sample Unity + WPF code I'm looking at (from Codeplex) does the exact same thing, except that it works! I've also started the app by single-stepping, and it eventually hits the first line in App.xaml. When I step into this line, that's when the app just starts "running", but I don't see anything (and my breakpoint isn't hit). If I do the exact same thing in the sample application, stepping into App.xaml puts me right into OnStartup, which is what I'd expect to happen. Argh! Is it a Bad Thing to just put the Unity construction in my GUI's Window_Loaded event handler? Does it really need to be at the App level?

Problem with using Jquery.ajax over .load on Zend

Right now, what i'm trying to do is to replace a label on the front page with a block of html. Right now, the page basically has: <label id="replace"></label> the js currently has: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#replace").load('/test'); }); the Zend class function has: public function indexAction(){ $this->_helper->layout()->disableLayout(); $this->_view->message = "This is from TestController index"; } and finally the index.phtml template simply has: <?php echo $this->message;?> Right now, I want to change the code around so that instead of just replacing that label with the same message, it would do a POST where the function will pull out a parameter, do something (like for instance, go to the database and pull something out with the POST parameter) and then return the message. I've tried editing the js so that it would look like: $.post('/test', {param : "test_param"}, function(data) {$("#replace").html(data);}); or $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/test', data: "{param:test_param}", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(data) {$("#replace").html(data);} }); and neither worked. I took a step back and tried to replicate the .load functionality and do: $.ajax({ url: '/test', success: function(data) { $('#replace').html(data); alert('Load was performed.'); } }); and it doesn't work either. Anyone have any tips on how to go about doing this?

How to convert a rectangle to TRBL CSS rect value?

I'm not quite sure how to put this, but here goes... The css clip attribute is defined like so: rect(top, right, bottom, left). However, I'm exploring the use of a custom Rectangle 'class' to encapsulate some operations. The rectangle class has the attributes height, width and x, y. The x and y values are encapsulated in a Point object, and the height and width are encapsulated in a Dimension object, the rectangle being a composite of a point (its top-left location) and a dimension (width and height). So far so good. I though it would be pretty simple on the basis of having the rectangles x, y, width and height values to define the css rect attribute in terms of top, right, bottom, left, but I've become hopelessly confused- I've been googling for a while, and I can't seem to find any documentation as to what the TRBL values actually are or what they represent. For example, should I be thinking in terms of co-ordinates, in which case, surely I can describe the rectangle as a css rect using the rectangles x position for Top, x position + width for Right, the rectangles height + y for Bottom and its y position for Left... but thats a load of BS, surely? Also, surely rect is actually an inset, or have I just inverted my understanding of clip? I'd appreciate some advice. What I want to be able to do is (i) Define a rectangle using x, y, width and height (ii)Express the rectangle in TRBL form so that I can manipulate a divs clipping behaviour (iii)Change x, y, width or height and recalculate in terms of TRBL and goto (ii) I appreciate there are some other factors here, and some intermediary transforms to be done, but I've confused myself pretty badly- Can anyone give me some pointers?

Getting dialogue snippets from text using regular expressions

I'm trying to extract snippets of dialogue from a book text. For example, if I have the string "What's the matter with the flag?" inquired Captain MacWhirr. "Seems all right to me." Then I want to extract "What's the matter with the flag?" and "Seem's all right to me.". I found a regular expression to use here, which is "[^"\\]*(\\.[^"\\]*)*". This works great in Eclipse when I'm doing a Ctrl+F find regex on my book .txt file, but when I run the following code: String regex = "\"[^\"\\\\]*(\\\\.[^\"\\\\]*)*\""; String bookText = "\"What's the matter with the flag?\" inquired Captain MacWhirr. \"Seems all right to me.\""; Pattern p = Pattern.compile(regex); Matcher m = p.matcher(bookText); if(m.find()) System.out.println(m.group(1)); The only thing that prints is null. So am I not converting the regex into a Java string properly? Do I need to take into account the fact that Java Strings have a \" for the double quotes?

How to retrieve content via .load() or $.get() with this line

hello :) I posted a question a day or two ago about how to retrieve php via ajax method in this modal I was using. I kinda found out the right way to go about it, but there's still something I'm not doing right (obviously lol) Here's the section thats giving me the issues: jQuery('div that holds content').fadeIn(200).css({ 'width': Number( popWidth ) }); $('').load('/something/somewhere/this #content'); So, im using safari, and a local server (mamp), when I check activity in my browser, it shows that it is loading the content with every click, AND the pop up pops up, but no content. When I simply retrieve content via hidden div, ofcourse, i get it. This is what I'm trying to avoid. right now I have that div in my footer stashed as hidden. I'd rather just make a call when its needed, instead of loading it every single time a page is accessed. you can go here to see the whole script i posted in my last question: How to use ajax to show php in a modal pop up Anyone have any idea? I read that .load() has the ability to grab specific content from a request, but im not sure the major difference between that and $.get() I've tried both, and I get the same results. Im using wordpress, and wordpress's ajax requests run smooth as ever, so I know its not a local problem, i'ts my coding lol Ok....Im done typing :)
