• Test Driven Development (TDD) in Visual Studio 2010- Microsoft Mondays

  November 14th , I will be presenting at Microsoft Mondays a session about Test Driven Development (TDD) in Visual Studio 2010 . Microsoft Mondays is program consisting of a series of Webcasts showcasing various Microsoft products and technologies. Each Monday we discuss a particular topic pertaining to development, infrastructure, Office tools, ERP, client/server operating systems etc. The webcast will be broadcast via Lync and can viewed from a web client. The idea behind the “Microsoft Mondays” program is to help you become more proficient in the products and technologies that you use and help you utilize their full potential.   Test Driven Development in Visual Studio 2010 Level – 300 (  Intermediate – Advanced ) Test Driven Development (TDD), also frequently referred to as Test Driven Design, is a development methodology where developers create software by first writing a unit test, then writing the actual system code to make the unit test pass.  The unit test can be viewed as a small specification around how the system should behave; writing it first helps the developer to focus on only writing enough code to make the test pass, thereby helping ensure a tight, lightweight system which is specifically focused meeting on the documented requirements. TDD follows a cadence of “Red, Green, Refactor.” Red refers to the visual display of a failing test – the test you write first will not pass because you have not yet written any code for it. Green refers to the step of writing just enough code in your system to make your unit test pass – your test runner’s UI will now show that test passing with a green icon. Refactor refers to the step of refactoring your code so it is tighter, cleaner, and more flexible. This cycle is repeated constantly throughout a TDD developer’s workday. • The 'desktops' move to Oracle

  The move to Oracle has been most interesting.  Here we have an organization who are interested in what they are interested in.  Not so much in things that aren't 'core'. The legacy Sun desktop products are things that Oracle is interested in.  To that end there are some changes coming to policies and products - and from my perspective they are all good. Very good. One of the changes to the Product suite is that we are now referred to as part of the Virtualization team, falling under Oracle's Chief Corporate Archtiect, Edward Screven.  Edward says that the Products were a 'gem' found inside the great pile of stuff that was Sun. Another change is that while StarOffice/Open Office has been certainly endorsed by Oracle, and it also falls under Edward's purview, and here has been a push on to use it as opposed to... well... you know.    It is not, however, part of the Virtualization team's product suite any more. There are some other really interesting changes coming that you will hear about quite soon.  The big message for today, though, is that Sun Rays, Secure Global Desktop, VirtualBox, and Oracle VDI software are all still alive and kicking and moving forward.  Infact, at the Oracle earnings call last week, Charles Phillips announced more significant wins with Sun Rays in the US Federal Governmnet space.  He could have talked about all kinds of legacy Sun products, but chose to mention Sun Rays in the first Quarterly statement since the acquisition of Sun - you should see this as a very good sign indeed. • Netbook performance - 1.33 GHz vs 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom

  All new 11" netbooks seem to carry 1.33 GHz Atom Z520 CPU instead of 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom N270/N280. The screen resolution of 11" netbooks make them very appealing, but I'm a bit concerned about their performance as they carry a slower CPU than the 1.6GHz Atom, which isn't a great performer in the first place. Is there any significant difference in performance between 1.33 GHz and 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom processors in day to day usage? Are any of those fast enough to decode 720p x264 video? (When paired with typical Intel GMA platform and software decoder like ffdshow/CoreAVC of course, not with Nvidia Ion platform)

• How to make sysctl network bridge settings persist after a reboot?

  I am setting up a notebook for software demo purpose. The machine has 8GB RAM, a Core i7 Intel CPU, a 128GB SSD, and runs Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit. The notebook is used as a KVM host and runs a few KVM guests. All such guests use the virbr0 default bridge. To enable them to communicate with each other using multicast, I added the following to the host's /etc/sysctl.conf, as shown below net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 Afterwards, following man sysctl(8), I issued the following: sudo /sbin/sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf My understanding is that this should make these settings persist over reboots. I tested it, and was surprised to find out the following: root@sdn1 :/proc/sys/net/bridge# more *tables :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-arptables :::::::::::::: 1 :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-ip6tables :::::::::::::: 1 :::::::::::::: bridge-nf-call-iptables :::::::::::::: 1 All defaults are coming back! Yes. I can use some kludgy "get arounds" such as putting a /sbin/sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf into the host's /etc/rc.local but I would rather "do it right". Did I misunderstand the man page or is there something that I missed? Thanks for any hints. -- Zack

• Using a cell phone as a PC remote control

  I have a sony ericsson phone that can control any PC using bluetooth, as long as it has permission to do so, of course. It doesn't require any server software of any kind, it just works out of the box with any PC (or mac) that is bluetooth enabled. Is there any program I could use that has the same functionality? I don't want to install anything on the PC, I just want to be able to use the program installed on the phone. I prefer Java ME/Android/Symbian apps, I don't have an iPhone.

• Reputable TabletPC vendors

  I'm developing software for tablet pcs and so far I've used some lenovo's (x41), some toshiba's (portege m200) and some gateways (M275). Granted: the machines we've gotten have predominantly been refurbs, but they're failing 80-90% of the time. Part of the reason that they're failing is users inevitably dropping them, so I'm looking at potentially some rugged tablet pcs. The problem that I'm running into is that Current tablet pcs are high spec (much higher than I'm looking for at least) The rugged tablet manufacturer space seems to be filled with lots of small companies that I don't trust yet. I'm looking for tablet PCs (keyboard or no) that can support: XP tpc (optional win 7) single core 1.5-2ghz 1gb ram wifi optional gsm optional gps very optional vehicle docking solutions The budget I've got is tight (but slightly flexible - So are there any reputable tablet pc vendors out there that can do this.

• Dolby Digital Live (DDL) on Asus Rampage II Gene (Creative X-Fi Extreme)

  Hi there, I have an Asus Rampage II Gene motherboard which has X-Fi extreme built in. I can get it to work with Windows 7 ok using the Creative drivers, however when I try and install the DDL/DTS add on pack from Creative I get the error message: "There are no supported audio device available. You need to close the application. Click OK to close the application now" I don't understand it because I have the Creative software installed ok and supporting the sound without any problems. In Device manager the audio device comes up as 'High definition audio device' and uses driver: 6.1.7600.16385 from Microsoft. I tried using the Creative drivers which show up as 'soundmax HD audio' however these do not allow any of the Creative products to run properly. Please can anyone offer any help? • RAIDZ vs RAID1+0

  Hi guys I just got 4 SSDs for my FreeNAS box. This server is only used to serve a single iSCSI extent to my Citrix XenServer pool and was wondering if I should setup them up in a RAIDZ or a RAID 1+0 configuration. This isn't used for anything in production, just for my test lab so I'm not sure which one is going to be better in this scenario. Will I see a major difference in speed or reliability? Currently the server has three 500GB Western Digital Blue drives and it's dog slow when I deploy a new version of our software on it, hence the upgrade.

• OpenVPN access server on Amazon VPC vs free version

  Maybe I'm missing the point, but I'd like to setup simple VPN access with software VPN to access my private network on Amazon VPC. I thought OpenVPN would be a great solution for this, and I thought it might make sense to put this on the NAT instance that comes with VPC so I don't have to spend money on another instance. Is there any advantage to running the following: http://www.openvpn.net/index.php?option=com_content&id=493 vs sticking to the free solution of OpenVPN? What does one offer over the other? Any reason not to run this on the NAT instance itself?

   MVC is a design pattern. A reusable "recipe" for constructing your application. Generally, you don't want your user interface code and data access code to be mixed together, it makes changing either one more difficult. By placing data access code into a "Model" object and user interface code into a "View" object, you can use a "Controller" object to act as a go-between, sending messages/calling methods on the view object when the data changes and vice versa. Model-view-controller (MVC) is an architectural pattern used in software engineering. In complex computer applications that present a large amount of data to the user, a developer often wishes to separate data (model) and user interface (view) concerns, so that changes to the user interface will not affect data handling, and that the data can be reorganized without changing the user interface. The model-view-controller solves this problem by decoupling data access and business logic from data presentation and user interaction, by introducing an intermediate component: the controller.Model:    The domain-specific representation of the information that the application operates. Domain logic adds meaning to raw data (e.g., calculating whether today is the user's birthday, or the totals, taxes, and shipping charges for shopping cart items).    Many applications use a persistent storage mechanism (such as a database) to store data. MVC does not specifically mention the data access layer because it is understood to be underneath or encapsulated by the Model.View:    Renders the model into a form suitable for interaction, typically a user interface element. Multiple views can exist for a single model for different purposes.Controller:    Processes and responds to events, typically user actions, and may invoke changes on the model.

• Plex won't enter my home directory or other partitions

  I just installed the Plex media server from the Ubuntu Software Center, and opened the web interface. I wanted to start by adding a collection. When it gave me a file browser, I wanted to go to /home/robin/Videos. /home is as far as I got. It showed robin, with an arrow in front of it, but when I tried to expand the directory tree it was empty. The same happened when trying to access /media/Data. For me it's quite useless like this, as all of my media files are inside those 2 directories. Help would be much appreciated. My first guess seemed to be a correct one; It is, as always, a permissions problem. How do I give plex access to my home folder without also giving other users access to it? • replace laptop hard disk

  I have bought a ACER Aspire 5736Z-4790 laptop for my parents. It just passed the warranty. I think the hard disk is bad now. I cannot open/copy some of my files. It will crash (blue screen) when I do chkdsk /f/r in the stage 4 of 5 which is verifying file data. I can hear a strange noise when it is reading the bad sectors (I guess because it hangs there.) I am thinking replace the hard disk. should I buy the same hard disk or any SATA laptop hard disk will be ok? BTW, is there a way to repair it (with software)?

• Windows Service and Group Policy unable to access network share on Win2008 Domain

  I have one computer on my domain that has suddenly stopped receiving software updates via group policy. Domain logins still work, and group policy on the machine is still being updated, so it knows that there are new packages to install and where to look for them, but every time it tries to install a package, it throws a 1622 error (location not found). Logged in users can reach the same network shares, and every other computer on network is installing the packages. Further investigation found that other services running as "System" on the problematic computer are also unable to authenticate to network shares. How do I diagnose/fix this computer's account in Active Directory? The computer account exists, and is a member of "Domain Computers" - or is there something else I should be looking at?

• Cleanup pending installation

  I have an old PC with Windows 2000 that I want to reanimate. Each time I start the PC I see a dialog box "Windows Installer","Installation wird vorbereitet." (Preparing installation). I can cancel that installation and work with that PC. But I don't know what installation was pending. There is a more severe problem: I cannot install or uninstall any other software since I get this hanging dialog again. It lasts forever taking no CPU time. How can I cleanup the pending installations registry to make misexec usable again?

• Linux Email Server Auto-Reply

  I need to setup a mail server that has the following functionality: if a user sends an email to a specific address on this server, the server must first check if the email has a PDF attachment, do some processing to that PDF file and then reply to the user's initial mail with the new PDF file attached. My question is how would it be possible to achieve this functionality, and what software / mail server do you recommend? I'm thinking that it can be solved the following way: when the server receives a new email it executes an external Python script that checks the attachment, processes the PDF file and then sends it back in the user's mailbox. What mail server would be able to do this, and what configurations does it need?

  Last week I decided to use TeamViewer VPN to administer software on a server behind a firewall using RemoteDesktop. It was easy to configure to start-up with the system and make VPN available on the other side but now it fails to connect at the step shown below: The remote machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there a native way to circumvent the external firewall using a server role or feature to make Windows Server do the VPN work? Do people have better / more reliable experiences with other products such as Hamachi? • Windows 7 64 Bit Can't Get Past Format

  favorite Just assembled a new machine: MSI 880GM-E41 motherboard 500GB Samsung hard drive AMD Athlon II X4 640 processor 4GB RAM Windows 7 64 Bit LITE-ON Black 4X Blu-ray reader I boot up, start the install. When it gets to the screen to select what partition, the motherboard loses power. It doesnt make sense, I can leave it in the bios settings for a very long time and it doesnt lose power. When it does lose power, the monitor shuts down and the mouse loses power, but the power light stays on. I cannot tell if it is a harware or software problem.

  The Oracle Linux and Oracle VM are continuing to see growth in IHV (Independent Hardware Vendor) ecosystem. The Oracle Linux and Oracle VM Hardware Certification Program, also referred as HCL, provides a formal means for hardware vendors to work with Oracle to establish high quality support for the certified hardware platform. Since the beginning of the program, number of hardware partners have certified range of server platforms on Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. Currently, HCL lists over 400 certifications from 10 server vendors and the list continues to grow at a rapid pace. New hardware certification involves close collaboration between Oracle and server partner to ensure that adequate testing is performed on the target server and results are thoroughly reviewed. This rigorous process ensures that when new hardware platform is listed on HCL, it has full support from both Oracle and the respective partner. Additionally, once a certification is achieved with Oracle Linux with the current version of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, future minor updates of the software continue to carry over the certification, reducing the need for a re-certification. • I want to hit Apex SQL with a big stick

  <Whinge> Thought id just have a little whinge about this product which caused me a load of grief the other day..... So the background was that my development machine had a completely full hard disk which I needed to sort out.  Upon investigation I found the issue was that the msdb database had managed to get very large. This was caused because a long time ago (and I cant even remember why) I tried out Apex SQL.  After a few days I decided to uninstall it and thought nothing more of it.  What I didnt realise was that uninstalling it doesnt actually uninstall it (and it doesnt inform you about this), but there was still some assemblies left on my machine.  Everytime SQL Server was running it was starting the Apex SQL Connection monitor which was then running in the background and regularly recording information in the msdb database.  Over time it had recorded enough to fill the disk. The below article advises how to sort this out by removing this fully so if your having a problem then try this out:http://knowledgebase.apexsql.com/2007/08/how-to-uninstall-apexsqlconnectionmonit_09.htm Once this was sorted out its interesting to read the above article because I just dont think the approach used by the vendor of this software is a very good one.  So for the Apex team just wanted to pass on a thought: If I want to uninstall your product you should tell me if stuff is left on the machine especially if a process will be running which is going to fill my machine with useless data, </Whinge>
