• Merge items in nanoc

  I have been trying to use nanoc for generating a static website. I need to organize a complex arrangement pages I want to keep my content DRY. How does the concept of includes or merges work within the nanoc system? I have read the docs but I can't seem to find what I want. For example: how can I take two partial content items and merge them together into a new content item. In staticmatic you can do some like the following inside your page. = partial('partials/shared/navigation') How would a similar convention work within nanoc?

  I'm writing a scheduling program with a difficult programming problem. There are several events, each with multiple meeting times. I need to find an arrangement of meeting times such that each schedule contains any given event exactly once, using one of each event's multiple meeting times. Obviously I could use brute force, but that's rarely the best solution. I'm guessing this is a relatively basic computer science problem, which I'll learn about once I am able to start taking computer science classes. In the meantime, I'd prefer any links where I could read up on this, or even just a name I could Google.

• Marker Recognition on Android (recognising Rubik's Cubes)

  Hi everybody. I'm developing an augmented reality application for Android that uses the phone's camera to recognise the arrangement of the coloured squares on each face of a Rubik's Cube. One thing that I am unsure about is how exactly I would go about detecting and recognising the coloured squares on each face of the cube. If you look at a Rubik's Cube then you can see that each square is one of six possible colours with a thin black border. This lead me to think that it should be relativly simply to detect a square, possibly using an existing marker detection API. My question is really, has anybody here had any experience with image recognition and Android? Ideally I'd like to be able to implement and existing API, but it would be an interesting project to do from scratch if somebody could point me in the right direction to get started. • iphone/ipad orientation handling

  This is more of a general question for people to provide me guidance on, basically Im learning iPad/iPhone development and have finally come across the multi-orientation support question. I have looked up a fair amount of doco, and my book "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" has a nice chapter on it. But my question is this, if I was to programatically change my controls (or even use different views for each orientation) how on earth to people maintain their code base? I can just imagine so many issues with spaghetti code/thousands of "if" checks all over the place, that it would drive me nuts to make one small change to the UI arrangement. Does anyone have experience handling this issue? What is a nice way to control it? Thanks a lot Mark

• WPF: Is ListBox or Panel responsible for mouse wheel navigation?

  I have a custom ListBox which uses a custom Panel as ItemsHost. I want to have control over mouse wheel input, so that turning the wheel changes the single selected item. I believe that the best method to do so is to handle the OnPreviewMouseWheel event (although this is only have what I want since it doesn't provide horizontal wheel data). Now the big question: Is there a best practice where to handle OnPreviewMouseWheel? In ListBox (which by default doesn't have a clue about the arrangement of the Panel's child elements) or in Panel (which by default doesn't have a clue about the "IsSelected" property of it's child elements)?

• Should I worry about reigning in namespace number/length/scope?

  I've recently reorganized a solution-in-progress from 24 projects to 4. To keep the copious files organized in the "main" project, things are in folders in folders in folders. I think I've preserved a logical, discoverable arrangement of the solution content. As a result, of course, I end up with namespaces like AppName.DataAccess.NHibernate.Fluent.Mappings. Is there any compelling reason that I should care about flattening out the namespace hierarchy when my project has a somewhat deeply nested folder structure? (I am not concerned about resolving or managing using directives; I let ReSharper do all the heavy lifting here.)

• Odd GROUP BY output DB2 - Results not as expected

  If I run the following query: select load_cyc_num , crnt_dnlq_age_cde , sum(cc_min_pymt_amt) as min_pymt , sum(ec_tot_bal) as budget , case when ec_tot_bal 0 then 'Y' else 'N' end as budget , case when ac_stat_cde in ('A0P','A1P','ARP','A3P') then 'Y' else 'N' end as arngmnt , sum(sn_close_bal) as st_bal from statements where (sn_close_bal 0 or ec_tot_bal 0) and load_cyc_num in (200911) group by load_cyc_num , crnt_dnlq_age_cde , case when ec_tot_bal 0 then 'Y' else 'N' end , case when ac_stat_cde in ('A0P','A1P','ARP','A3P') then 'Y' else 'N' end then I get the correct "BUDGET" grouping, but not the correct "ARRANGEMENT" grouping, only two rows have a "Y". If I change the order of the case statements in the GROUP BY, then I get the correct grouping (full Y-N breakdown for both columns). Am I missing something obvious?

I've recently finished a web app with fully handwritten raw php code and it's absolutely hard to be done again for another project. even though I have the recent project code snippets to be used again, but due to their non-structural arrangement (not object oriented), i have no passion to use 'em again. I have no experience with common frameworks like ZF, CakePhp, CodeIgniter, so I think to get my hands on a multipurpose OO library for my web app and the framework learning will be the next step! any suggestion? Since I'm going one step further I'm going to use ZF as famous framework which could provide me more job opportunities perhaps. thankssss :)

• "Ambiguous template specialization" problem

  I'm currently porting a heap of code that has previously only been compiled with Visual Studio 2008. In this code, there's an arrangement like this: template <typename T> T convert( const char * s ) { // slow catch-all std::istringstream is( s ); T ret; is >> ret; return ret; } template <> inline int convert<int>( const char * s ) { return (int)atoi( s ); } Generally, there are a lot of specializations of the templated function with different return types that are invoked like this: int i = convert<int>( szInt ); The problem is, that these template specializations result in "Ambiguous template specialization". If it was something besides the return type that differentiated these function specializations, I could obviously just use overloads, but that's not an option. How do I solve this without having to change all the places the convert functions are called?

• How can I position QDockWidgets as the screen shot shows using code?

  I want a Qt window to come up with the following arrangement of dock widgets on the right. Qt allows you to provide an argument to the addDockWidget method of QMainWindow to specify the position (top, bottom, left or right) but apparently not how two QDockWidgets placed on the same side will be arranged. • Rails + simple role system through associative table

  So I have the Ninja model which has many Hovercrafts through ninja_hovercrafts (which stores the ninja_id and the hovercraft_id). It is of my understanding that this kind of arrangement should be set in a way that the associative table stores only enough information to bind two different classes. But I'd like to use the associative table to work as a very streamlined authorization hub on my application. So i'd also like this table to inform my system if this binding makes the ninja the pilot or co-pilot of a given hovercraft, through a "role" field in the table. My questions are: Is this ugly? Is this normal? Are there methods built into rails that would help me to automagically create Ninjas and Hovercrafts associations WITH the role? For exemple, could I have a nested form to create both ninjas and hcs in a way that the role field in ninjas_hovercrafts would be also filled? If managing my application roles this way isn't a good idea, whats the non-resource heavy alternative (my app is being designed trying to avoid scalability problems such as excessive joins, includes, etc) thank you

• Should I be looking for an alternative to Zen Cart as my business grows?

  I created a business website for a family business which is growing. It's my family, and I'm a software developer, but I don't want to rebuild the wheels or be a shopping cart programmer. For this business, I need the web store to "just work", but... it gets complicated... There are two parts of this business website. One of them is driven by Wordpress and I use the awesome Thesis theme. This is modern, flexible, and saves me a lot of time from doing custom coding and styling. I couldn't be more pleased with this arrangement. The other part of the site is a Zen Cart store. It's administration and it's flexibility is frustrating and archaic Web 1.0. For the past few years, I keep hearing that the developers are working on a 2.0 version of Zen Cart, but they haven't communicated anything significant in the past few years other than to say, "When it's ready, we'll let you know." What I'm looking for in a cart, I would need to install 6-10 additional mods, and would need to do a lot of custom coding. I'm now willing to pay for a top-notch e-commerce solution for a small business that we can grow up into a larger business over time. Requirements: Extremely flexible shipping that let's us set up rules per product/category, tables of rates, calculated rates, max package weighs, etc. (flexibility like that available with CEON Advance Shipping Module for Zen Cart Coupons and gift certificates Manual order entry for phone orders Multi-channel support (We also sell on Amazon, eBay, use Google Base and we want to maintain one set of inventory and have it kept current) Decent SEO features Reviews and star-ratings on products Easy social networking features for sharing, following, liking, etc) Easy integration with AdWords and analytics tracking Modern and very usable product and store administration (Like I was saying, I'm spoiled by Wordpress and Thesis) At the end of the day, I don't care if it's a hosted solution or if I have to host it myself. I just want something that is going to stay up-to-date, regularly be maintained and improved, and if I have to update it, things like the one-click update present in Wordpress is something it has to have. Professional Webmasters, if you had to run a store / website, but you had to spend your time focusing on your sales and marketing efforts rather than diffing php files and copying and tweaking them to change even the slightest details of your site, what would you choose?

• GPU hung when switching graphic card

  I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron N4110) with a switchable graphic. $ lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Whistler [AMD Radeon HD 6600M Series] (rev ff) Normally, my laptop starts with both graphic cards enabled, which caused the laptop to turn very hot and the fan to become very noisy. I have been using a small script to disable the Radeon card. For some time, I'm quite happy with this arrangement. However, I have been having some issues with the Intel card (IGD), the Intel card often randomly hang when running OpenGL apps; and so I want to give the Radeon card (DIS) another chance. I have never been able to switch to the Radeon card, but recently, I found out that if I do a "delayed switching" (DDIS): # echo "DDIS" > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch root@lieryan-dell-ubuntu:/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo# cat switch 0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0 1:DIS: :Pwr:0000:01:00.0 then I logoff (i.e. to restart X), the screen switch to pseudo-tty and then it stuck there freezing. At this situation, mouse and keyboard stops working so I can't switch to another ptty. I tried ssh-ing from another computer to salvage logs (dmesg at that point) and whatnot; I found out that when freezing, the active graphic card is the AMD card: -- this is from ssh -- # cat switch 0:IGD: :Off:0000:00:02.0 1:DIS:+:Pwr:0000:01:00.0 but the GPU is apparently hung, looking at dmesg gives: ... Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 11.10 Release: 11.10 Codename: oneiric The laptop also do not have the option to set graphic card at BIOS and the proprietary driver, fglrx, also have never worked; when I installed it through jockey ("Additional Drivers"), glxinfo showed that it still being rendered by Mesa, the /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo directory has gone missing, and the driver crashes with a traceback if I use xorg.conf to tell X to use fglrx. Anyone had any idea if it is possible to use this AMD card either with the radeon or the fglrx driver? logs: dmesg

• Revenue Recognition: Performance Obligation Pass a Hurdle

  I met up with Seamus Moran, our resident accounting expert, to get his thoughts about the latest happenings with IFRS. Last week, on March 13,  the comment period on the FASB and IASB exposure draft “Revenue From Contracts with Customers” closed.  FASB and IASB have just over 20 comment letters – a very small number.  The implication is that that the exposure draft does reflect general acceptance, and therefore will be published as both a US and Internationally Generally Accepted Accounting Standard. At a recent conference call, FASB and IASB expected to complete their report to both Boards on the comments by early summer, complete their deliberation of the comments by the fall and draft the final standard text by late this year. It is assumed the concept of Performance Obligations would become US GAAP and IFRS in place of the existing standards.  They confirmed that all existing US GAAP and IFRS guidelines would be withdrawn, and that they were in dialogue with the SEC on withdrawing the SEC guidelines on the revenue issue as well.The open question is when will Performance Obligations become effective?  The Boards have said that they would like this Revenue Recognition standard and the the Lease Accounting standard to be effective at the same time because what isn’t either insurance, interest, or a lease is a revenue arrangement.  However, ascertaining what is generally acceptable in respect of Leases is proving a little elusive, and the Boards have recently diverged a little on the P&L side of the accounting (although both are in agreement that there will be no off-balance sheet leases).  It is therefore likely that the Lease standard might be delayed. One wonders if the Boards will  define effectivity of the Revenue standard independently of the Lease standard or if they will stick with their resolve to make them co-effective.  The Boards have also said that neither standard will be effective before June 2015.Here is the gist of the new Revenue Recognition principle and the steps to apply it:Recognize revenue to depict the transfer of goods or services in an amount that reflects the consideration expected to be entitled in exchange for those goods and services.Steps to apply the core principles: Identify the contract with the customer Identify the separate performance obligations Determine the transaction price Allocate the the transaction price Recognize Revenue when a performance obligation is satisfied

• Some Problems Can't Be Outsourced

  More and more companies are becoming attracted to the idea of Infrastructure as a Service (or IaaS). It would seem that you can outsource the provisioning and management of your services, encompassing everything from Email, through to your servers, workstations and software, all the way down to your LAN and internet services. This type of outsourcing can be a very attractive option for companies who have tight budgets who are short of technical skills or don't have the means to provide long-term IT support. Essentially, they can outsource your services at low short-term costs that are knowable and controllable, are quickly and easily scalable, and generate a minimum of hassle for your internal staff. If you want to get a sophisticated IT infrastructure set up in a hurry without the usual high buy-in costs, or the task of finding and hiring the right specialists. It would seem the way to go, particularly when their salesmen are hypnotizing you with oleaginous phrases such as "we are closely aligned with our client organization's core business requirements, providing agile services". It sounds too good to be true, and so it is. Whereas the costs will have initially been calculated on the annual renewal fees and service fees for ongoing support, there are other charges too which aren't so obvious. It can end up costing far more than the conventional solution once you take into account the extra costs, the fees for customization and upgrades. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) only becomes apparent when it is too late to extract the company easily from the arrangement. After a few years, these annual fees can add up to more than the initial cost of implementing a traditional in-house system. Worse than that is that you can then lose your power to determine your priorities: When you become reliant on this company, with its own schedule of priorities, to implement every change, however simple, you have effectively lost control of your technical infrastructure. This will make senior management very nervous. There is definitely a requirement for this sort of service. If you urgently need an exceptionally high class of service or more expertise than you currently possess, then outsourcing is probably for you. You and your IT colleagues will always have something to do, be it user assistance, smoothing out integrations with an external provider, or working on something entirely new. Heck, if you outsource to IBM, the SysAdmins can go along for the ride and polish their expertise. What you need to figure out is how much your time is worth, because time is ultimately all that outsourcing will buy you and your organization. Now you just need to convince your nervous CEO. • How can I restore my original IME Romaji input settings?

  the this one, Japanese IME on Windows: switch back to romaji input method (3) did not help. The problem seems the same. My Vista home premium version PC, I had been using Microsoft IME to use English and Japanese input using romaji henkan for a long time. One day, all of a sudden, first when I started up the PC, it has cap lock indicator ON. So, I press SHIFT key, CAP lock indicator is off!(This I have to do every morning.) Now when I want to type romaji input to change to Japanese, I switch EN English (United States) to "JP Japanese (Japan) and select input to hiragana input. It worked until that day. But now when I set to input romaji for hiragana as I used to do and start typing, then it shows Japanese hiragana directly on the display just as keyboard setting as Japanese ???109???????? as shown in Wikipedia JIS keyboard. And I cannot show hiragana as I wanted ( I can convert to Kanji OK) etc. by hitting space key. But its key board arrangement is what I never learned. Other thing I found is when I hit "`" key, it switches between hiragana and alphabet. When I see Control panel setting it is the same setting as I have seen. Please suggest me a solution to get the original setting for IME input mode as I used to do. John K.

• Why is my biometric logon method no longer default and how to fix it? Win 7-based lenovo laptop

  My laptop has been having some random problems with hibernating properly. That is a whole another topic that I still haven't resolved, but this is a different issue. The issues are connected, I guess, because one time after my computer experienced a failed hibernate, my login screen changed: since then my login screen always appears as the standard one with a prompt to type in a password. I can still use the finger scanner by clicking "other credentials" button. But that's annoying having to do that every time; previously the prompt to use finger scanner was the default one, whereas the typing password access was the alternate. How do I bring this arrangement back? In other words, how to switch the default from the type password prompt to the finger scan prompt? From online searches, I have only found discussions of turning the biometric access on or off... but clearly it is turned on and working, since I can use it. It's just not the default for some reason...

• How can I control which sound card Ubuntu uses for playback?

  I am dual-booting Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP but am new to Ubuntu. In Windows, I use an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card for recording (because it has RCA input jacks for my mixer), but I don't use it for playback (because my speakers use a 1/8 inch jack); instead, I use the motherboard's built-in sound card. I tried to recreate this arrangement in Ubuntu, but despite selecting the built-in card for all playback under System > Preferences > Sound, I still have inconsistent results. Rhythmbox plays back through the integrated card, but Flash content in the browser and games in the OS send their audio to the Audiophile card. I have seen recommendations to use a program called "Jack" to control this, but I installed it and found it baffling. How can I control which card is used for playback, other than disabling one card (as I discovered how to do and explain below)? Also, is there a GUI for disabling hardware, or is it necessary to edit a configuration file?

• NIC reordering on RHEL5/CentOS 5

  I have an HP ProLiant DL360 G6 containing two onboard NICs as well as an HP NC375T (NetXen NX3031 chipset) 4-port PCIe card. The system was running with eth0 and eth1 belonging to the onboard NICs and eth2-eth5 on the NetXen card. I recently rebuilt the server and from the kickstart process onward, the NICs were reordered such that the onboard NICs became eth4 and eth5, while the NetXen card took over eth0-eth3. I've had some experiences in the past where I tied NICs to specific interfaces via changes in the ifcfg-ethX config files, but this is the first time I've ever seen an add-in card take over eth0 from the motherboard's interfaces. This impacted my kickstart scripts, so: 1). How can I ensure that the onboard NICs take precedence in the kickstart arrangement. 2). What is the most consistent way to maintain that ordering through repeated reboots, kernel changes (e.g. going from a RHEL mainline kernel to a RHEL MRG realtime kernel), etc. 3). • Microsoft Licensing Scenario/Questions [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my software licensing question? I am a member of a team developing a third party application (APP) that listens for and services connections from remote devices via TCP. Also, some of these remote devices allow 1 or more users to interact with the remote device. On some of the remote devices, it is impossible for a user to interact with the device. The user/remote device makes no use of any Windows Server service - not DHCP, not IIS, not File Server, not Print Serer, not AD. The remote device's only connection to the Windows Server machine is through the APP's TCP ports. Our company has no interaction with Microsoft. We do not have a Microsoft sales team. Past inquiries have determined that it is cheaper for us to buy Microsoft software (and CALs) retail than to enter into any kind of "arrangement" with Microsoft. I have many questions about SQL Server CALs and Windows Server 2008 CALs. How can I obtain authoritative/legally binding answers? I am not looking for FREE legal advice. I AM looking for FREE advice about who/what/where I can responsibly spend my money to get meaningful information. I fear that passing this on to the local company law firm will just mean that I will be paying them to educate themselves on Microsoft licensing. And if that's like writing code to a new Microsoft API - they are not going to get it right the first time. Going to Microsoft for answers sounds like swimming up to a hungry shark and asking "One leg or two?" I am hoping someone has been down this road before and knows a law firm/lawyer that is experienced in these matters. Any help/suggestion welcome. Thanks.

• Knowledge and user generated content management system to track files, research, proposals, etc.?

  I'll try keep it short. Here's the scenario: We have employees all over the world performing similar work i.e. research, generating powerpoint slides, word documents, graphics, etc. Many times a lot of this previous work can be reused for another future project. The current arrangement is email and phone calls which as you would agree is quick if you know where to look but otherwise archaic and very very inefficient. So I am looking for software that will allow me to do the following: Tag files e.g. an investor presentation on cellphone usage in kenya would be tagged investor, cellphone, kenya Manage references e.g. if we read something on the internet, should be able to paste that link in some fashion and tag it as above. Preferably cloud based so that it can be accessed by anybody and additionally would be nice (though NOT must) to have access levels (director, manager, everyone) A nice interface that non technically savvy folks can warm up to ;) A desktop app would be handy so that people don't always have to click upload or something A tree based system is inefficient in this case because content is usually linked across branches and also people might not quite agree on one format of a tree. Tagging works around this very nicely. What I have considered so far: Evernote (for its more professional look) Springpad (for its versatility with content) Mendeley (this is a research manager and in some ways ideal, but i fear its limited to PDFs) The goal is that when somebody wants to look for a document, they don't have to ask a colleague, they can just search with keywords and all relevant information shows up. • Why do moving lines become fuzzy on my monitor?

  I recently got a new notebook. With moving images there are some graphical issues, and I'd like to know what causes them. None of my earlier monitors exhibited similar issues. Moving high contrast lines become jagged, similar to interleaved videos. When moving a horizontal line vertically those artifacts are colored, when moving a vertical line horizontally they aren't colored. The effect isn't observable in static images. And when moving faster the zone in which it occurs becomes wider. The effect is very visible if I move a window around on the borders of the window and wherever high contrast lines appear. But it appears when watching videos too. The vertical line in that image moves to the right, the horizontal line upwards. The effect is most likely related to the fact that each real pixel consists of different sub-pixels for the different color channels. But how are these causing the observed effect? Is the change at which the different colors change to the destination brightness different? The optical impression is that every second pixel in a chess board like arrangement is adapting slower than it's neighbors. But that doesn't make much sense.
