• Fan always on and overheating problems on HP G62

  I have a HP G62 with i5 processor, 4G Ram and ATI HD 5470. Started using Ubuntu 4 months ago, first was 11.10 and after 12.04. Everything worked perfectly until some weeks ago when my cpu fan became "crazy" and I mean by this always on, noise and overheating problems, for sure if I put a glass with water in some minutes will boil (and I mean it). There can be a bug in the last kernel or any other Ubuntu's official update? And by the way CPU fan is cleaned like a new born baby; Used jupiter and all those stuff (lm-sensor, psensor...) - same problem; Don't ask me to install ATI drivers because will work like sh#t (interface laggy as HD 5470 isn't supported by Ubuntu) and I can't even open ATI Catalyst (error when I try to open it), more than this I always used open source drivers and as I said, worked perfectly (3d, effects). Right now I'm back to Windows and everything is working perfectly but my main problem is that I get used with Ubuntu and kinda weird to use windows again. I want back my nice and almost perfect Ubuntu. Thanks, Dave

As an SDET, I'm always looking for anecdotes about new and interesting ways that programs can fail. I've learned a lot from these tales in the past, and would like to get that from the intelligent people in this community as well. I'd be interested in hearing what the issue was, how it was caught, if you think there was anything that could have reasonably done to catch it earlier or to avoid the same issue on later projects, and any other interesting lessons you took away from this bug. Please only write about bugs you personally were involved with, ideally on a project you worked on (e.g., no "10 years before I was born, this happened and it was FUNNY!" answers).   My life is coding. I was born in 1982 and my first computer was an amiga. I started learning Amiga BASIC. To cut a long story short, I know many things about several programming languages. Being unemployed(I achieved the german abitur, should be similar to a high school degree and I studied a few semesters of mechanical engineering in 2002(I learned JAVA back then)) I have no idea how to use this ability. I have never done commissional work, every task I solved was based on my own wishes and desires. I do not know how to write a FSD or PRD or put it into code. So the question is, why should anyone hire me? I specialized in kinect development but all jobs I applied for on odesk and similar were awarded to others without me knowing why. I don't know what I should do with my skills professionally. What do you suggest? As this board has weird rules, tell me where to find answers if this is the wrong place.

  Follow these simple guidelines to make collaboration using SharePoint easier:1. File Name:While it is allowed to use spaces in your filename (and maybe it seems even logical to do so), don’t use them if your file will end up (or is born on) SharePoint. When you use the “download a copy” functionality, SharePoint will replace the spaces with an “_”. This might (will) result in inconsistency when you upload the “same” file again, since SharePoint will see this as a different file (since the filename is different). I recommend using a filename with Capitalization style naming guideline. For instance: the document “Overall governance model.docx” would be named “OverallGovernanceModel.docx”Use the TITLE field in the office applications to give your document a title (and subtitle and keywords, .) The title column can be used in a view in a library. You can get to the document properties by clicking on 'Office Button/Prepare/Properties'. (Office 2007). This is metadata that is stored with the document, and will remain in the document (even if you exchange this document via e-mail, via an external hard drive). The filename cannot be longer than 128 characters. • How should I create a mutable, varied jtree with arbitrary/generic category nodes?

  Please note: I don't want coding help here, I'm on Programmers for a reason. I want to improve my program planning/writing skills not (just) my understanding of Java. I'm trying to figure out how to make a tree which has an arbitrary category system, based on the skills listed for this LARP game here. My previous attempt had a bool for whether a skill was also a category. Trying to code around that was messy. Drawing out my tree I noticed that only my 'leaves' were skills and I'd labeled the others as categories. Explanation of tree: The Tree is 'born' with a set of hard coded highest level categories (Weapons, Physical and Mental, Medical etc.). Fro mthis the user needs to be able to add a skill. Ultimately they want to add 'One-handed Sword Specialisation' for instance. To do so you'd ideally click 'add' with Weapons selected and then select One-handed from a combobox, then click add again and enter a name in a text field. Then click add again to add a 'level' or 'tier' first proficiency, then specialisation. Of course if you want to buy a different skill it's completely different, which is what I'm having trouble getting my head around let alone programming in. What is a good system for describing this sort of tree in code? All the other JTree examples I've seen have some predictable pattern, and I don't want to have to code this all in 'literals'. Should I be using abstract classes? Interfaces? How can I make this sort of cluster of objects extensible when I add in other skills not listed above that behave differently? If there is not a good system to use, if there a good process for working out how to do this sort of thing?

  The application I introduced here yesterday can best be understood via its author's explanation: "As I developed several different WorldWind-based applications, I noticed that they all started out the same. Terramenta was born so I wouldn't have to recreate the baseline every time, I could just provide NetBeans plugin modules to introduce the new features required by different projects." So, to try it out for myself, I checked out the sources from the Mercurial repo today, built them, and ran them. hg clone https://bitbucket.org/heidtmare/terramenta On Windows, things worked fine, on Ubuntu they didn't because the relevant native libraries aren't provided yet out of the box. Here's the result: The above provides the WorldWind globe, together with all the standard options, e.g., for showing names and other WorldWind features, together with several features that I don't understand yet, such as tools for creating shapes and a recorder for replaying sequences. The complete application is like this, i.e., one single functionality module is provided, which exposes several API packages that can be extended: It would really be cool if the above module could also be added to a Maven-based application via a reference to a Maven repository, in the way that Timon Veenstra and the AgroSense team have made available their GeoViewer. One cool thing from the GeoViewer solution is the Flamingo menubar, which I added to Terramenta by simply putting the dependency below into the application POM: <dependency>    <groupId>nl.cloudfarming.client</groupId>    <artifactId>menu</artifactId>    <version>1.0.24</version></dependency> The result, without doing anything other than the above: I am looking forward to helping to document the use cases and developer scenarios for Terramenta! • Korea&rsquo;s Anti Abortion / Pro Life Movement

  The South Korean government is in dire straits.  The national birth rate continues to decline and as the population grows older, there aren’t enough children being born to support the country long term.  The social issues of post Korean War are coming back to haunt the empowered nation.  Being torn apart by the Korean War (nicknamed the forgotten war in America) and with a nation facing starvation, South Korea allowed hundreds of thousands of their children to be adopted abroad.  This has created a problem of epidemic proportions, essentially devaluing life in Korea and child rearing. In an effort to encourage birth rates, the government encouraged their workers to go home early and procreate by turning off the lights in buildings.  Something unknown to me, was the illegalization of abortion except in special cases. According to the this article, http://joongangdaily.joins.com it’s working.  Abortions are down and women are being encouraged to give birth.  However the flip side is illegal risky abortions are on the rise, with potential back alley abortions looming.  But with a nation facing it’s potential implosion, it has to continue it’s efforts to encourage mothers to give birth. Many of the issues that America has faced is in stark contrast to South Korea.  Abortion has been a generally accepted procedure for some time.  If you’ll recall, I mentioned South Korea devalued their children.  But the nation’s problems lie so much deeper.  Being an Asian nation, saving “face” is an important aspect of life.  And being an unwed mother disgraces the family.  Living as a single mother in South Korea is a difficult life.  Most married mothers stay at home to take care of the children.  Being a shunned single mother that has a hard time getting a job (because you are a single mother) and affording child care isn’t like life in America. If we in the states suddenly faced a birthrate crisis, what would the U.S. government do?

• Natural talent vs experience [on hold]

  Hi i have a question for you guys if you had a choice of hiring one of two programmers. One of them is a natural born programming talent, he has been programming since he was 14 year old and he has been programming all sorts of things by him self, 3d renders,games,his own frameworks, he is really good at algorithms and problem solving. He is now about 25 years old and is looking for a job after some unchallenged years of college the only experience he has is working on his own/university stuff and some open source project. This guy spends all his free time programming and has several pet projects at home. The other person is a 37 year old career programmer. He has been programming since he graduated from university at the age of 26 and have been working since then. He did not have an interest in programming before university. During his studies he discovered that programming was fun and challenging but it never was a "passion". During his career he mainly worked with "enterprise" platforms such as .net or javaEE. He mainly have done database business applications and thus is lacking skills of the young talent like abstract problem solving or algorithms. But he know the tools he has been using during the years and is reliable and almost always makes his boss happy. He keeps him self updated in the platform and tools he has and is using. But outside the office walls he don't touch any code at all. Witch one would you hire? Would you favor one of them in certain projects? Do you think that if the young talent learns his tools he will be a better programmer than the older one? Would your decision be different if both of them where lacking a degree? or if only one of them was lacking a degree be the old and experienced or the young genius.

The commendable awareness exhibited by contributors that their answers are studied/used as learning material by millions of developers all over the world has created a regulated trust that seemingly keeps the nonsense (and egos) at the bottom of the barrel and out of the way. As an up-and-coming developer with so much to learn, I am grateful for each and every one of their patient contributions. I wish I could come up with a catchy/funny sign-off that makes everybody feel good, but I lack the funny bone that so many of the people on this site seem to have been born with.   I'm using the Drupal Quiz module, and have setup some basic quizzes and stuff like that. However some further customization is required, involving more than 1 question per page, and a multi-type answer in this type of format: Question 1: Describe 4 things you did last summer a) [ short answer space - text field ] b) "I wept" c) "My whole family died so I learned self reliance" d) "I got another xbox" Question 2: Describe 2 things you hate about yourself a) "My arms are way shorter than my legs" b) "I was born without human emotion" So I guess in two parts, how to show multiple questions per page, and then how to allow multiple text fields for answers. Oh and this quiz is not graded, it's like a self assessment. Thanks!

  I am trying to decide between a WYSIWYG editor (e.g. TinyMCE, CKEditor) and a WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) editor (e.g. WMD) for my web application. There is a thread on stackoverflow that compares the two approaches. I would like to know how users, particularly computer novices, have reacted to WYSIWYM editors in deployed web applications. It could be that computer novices are confused by WYSIWYM editors, preferring the immediacy of WYSIWYG; but is that born out in real-world applications? It's not theory I'm asking about here, but empirical evidence of the acceptance or otherwise of WYSIWYM.

• Is GOTO really as evil as we are led to believe?

  I'm a young programmer, so all my working life I've been told GOTO is evil, don't use it, if you do, your first born son will die. Recently, I've realized that GOTO actually still exists in .NET and I was wondering, is GOTO really as bad as they say, or is it just because everyone says you shouldn't use it, so that's why you don't. I know GOTO can be used badly, but are there any legit situations where you may possibly use it. The only thing I can think of is maybe to use GOTO to break out of a bunch of nested loops. I reckon that might be better then having to "break" out of each of them but because GOTO is supposedly always bad, I would never use it and it would probably never pass a peer review. What are your views? Is GOTO always bad? Can it sometimes be good? Has anyone here actually been gutsy enough to use GOTO for a real life system?

It appears to me that in Windows Identity Foundation, once a user is logged in, the claims are basically strings of information that describe the user. With the old role-based authentication, I could say that a user is or is not a member of a given group, but with claims-based authentication, I can now have strings of information that describe a user. "This user is female". This user was born on "July 6, 1975". "This user logged in using a USB key". Is it the essence of claims-based authentication,that I have strings of information about the user given to the application by the framework?

  I've posted a code snippet on another forum asking for help and people pointed out to me that using GoTo statements is very bad programming practice. I'm wondering: why is it bad? What alternatives to GoTo are there to use in VB.NET that would be considered generally more of a better practice? Consider this snippet below where the user has to input their date of birth. If the month/date/year are invalid or unrealistic(using if statements checking the integer inputs size, if there's a better way to do this, I'd appreciate if you could tell me that also :D) How would I be able to loop back to ask the user again? retryday: Console.WriteLine("Please enter the day you were born : ") day = Console.ReadLine If day > 31 Or day < 1 Then Console.WriteLine("Please enter a valid day") GoTo retryday End If

• mysql querying age from dob

  My MySQL database has date of birth stored in the format yyyy-mm-dd, how do I query the database - without using php code - to show me results of people born within x years of now, and/or, who are y years of age? The table is called users, the colum is called dob. I've spent a while viewing the MySQL manual but I can't work out precisely how to form my query. So far I went for select * from users where dob... but I don't think that's the way to go.

• Ghost Records, Backups, and Database Compression…With a Pinch of Security Considerations

    Today Jeffrey Langdon (@jlangdon) posed on #SQLHelp the following questions: So I set to answer his question, and I said to myself: “Hey, I haven’t blogged in a while, how about I blog about this particular topic?”. Thus, this post was born. (If you have never heard of Ghost Records and/or the Ghost Cleanup Task, go see this blog post by Paul Randal) 1) Do ghost records get copied over in a backup? If you guessed yes, you guessed right. The backup process in SQL Server takes all data as it is on disk – it doesn’t crack the pages open to selectively pick which slots have actual data and which ones do not. The whole page is backed up, regardless of its contents. Even if ghost cleanup has run and processed the ghost records, the slots are not overwritten immediately, but rather until another DML operation comes along and uses them. As a matter of fact, all of the allocated space for a database will be included in a full backup. So, this poses a bit of a security/compliance problem for some of you DBA folk: if you want to take a full backup of a database after you’ve purged sensitive data, you should rebuild all of your indexes (with FILLFACTOR set to 100%). But the empty space on your data file(s) might still contain sensitive data! A SHRINKFILE might help get rid of that (not so) empty space, but that might not be the end of your troubles. You might _STILL_ have (not so) empty space on your files! One approach that you can follow is to export all of the data on your database to another SQL Server instance that does NOT have Instant File Initialization enabled. This can be a tedious and time-consuming process, though. So you have to weigh in your options and see what makes sense for you. Snapshot Replication is another idea that comes to mind. 2) Does Compression get rid of ghost records (2008)? The answer to this is no. The Ghost Records/Ghost Cleanup Task mechanism is alive and well on compressed tables and indexes. You can prove this running a simple script: CREATE DATABASE GhostRecordsTest GO USE GhostRecordsTest GO CREATE TABLE myTable (myPrimaryKey int IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED,                       myWideColumn varchar(1000) NOT NULL DEFAULT 'Default string value')                         ALTER TABLE myTable REBUILD PARTITION = ALL WITH (DATA_COMPRESSION = PAGE) GO INSERT INTO myTable DEFAULT VALUES GO 10 DELETE myTable WHERE myPrimaryKey % 2 = 0 DBCC TRACEON(2514) DBCC CHECKTABLE(myTable) TraceFlag 2514 will make DBCC CHECKTABLE give you an extra tidbit of information on its output.
