• Freezing a dead(ish) laptop battery...

  I have a Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop with a battery that does not properly hold charge. Vista's battery meter does not read the remaining charge left; the laptop will randomly shut down at ~60% and sometimes the meter goes back up to 100% before shutting down without warning. So, does freezing a dead-ish laptop battery somehow repair it and allow it to hold charge again?

• Strange battery behavior on laptop

  My laptop is behaving rather strangely lately, and I was hoping to get some idea as to what may be causing such symptoms. The problem: When charging, very minute or so it loses connectivity with the AC adapter for a split second, and regains it back immediately. When this happens the little light that indicates the computer is plugged in does flicker off and back on, but I checked the adapter by replacing the battery on my laptop, and this indeed solves the problem, so it is probably the battery which is at fault, not the adapter (I also tried to move the adapter's wire around just to make sure it had nothing to do with torn wires). I suppose that the obvious solution is to get a new battery, but as far as battery defects go- this is a rather strange one; it loses connection with the adapter, but still powers the computer, and changing the power setting to a balanced plan (was maximum performance) seem to have solved the problem too. Is there a chance this is not simply the battery, but some kind of other electronic defect? And if not, what can cause it to behave so strangely? PS I tried to recalibrate it- didn't help.

• AC/battery laptop issues(not a simple charging fix)

  Is it possible to run a laptop off the battery while the AC is plugged in? I can play games no problem while just the battery is plugged in, but obviously that means I have to let it charge after every hour or so. But, when I plug it in to charge, it can't handle any video games anymore. I thought it was the brick in the power cord going out, but I just bought a new one and it still doesn't work. The specs are actually better than the old cord. I think the problem is an over heating problem in the AC outlet, but if it charges the battery while I play, it would work just fine running solely off the battery.

• How do laptop battery voltages affect runtime?

  I ordered a new battery for my faithful XPS M1710. I'm not sure of the voltage of the battery I have now, but the new one that the Dell rep got me (after 3-4 times confirming my phone number and laptop model number) is 14.8v. I was a bit concerned about potential incompatibilities (as most of the other compatible batteries listed were 11.1v), but I figure that there's no way that Dell would "recommend" batteries that wouldn't work or fry your system. Now, my question is, how does voltage affect battery life? If we assume the needed power draw to be constant, a higher voltage would indicate less amperage needed, therefore the battery would last longer before running out, yes? Or am I missing something? For reference: P=I*V P = power I = current V = voltage (duh)

• Battery won't charge and BSOD: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

  I have a Dell Vostro 1510 running Windows 7. Today when I pulled my machine out of it's bag and plugged it in, the little battery light on the side blinked constantly instead of staying solid, and Windows showed a message that the battery was not charging. The battery is 3.5 years old, but it can still hold the machine in standby overnight, so I don't know why it won't charge anymore. After I have had the machine on for a while (20 minutes the first time, 40 minutes the second time), it shows a blue screen of death with the message DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and reboots. I can deal with the battery being dead, but not with blue screens of death. Does anyone know how to fix it? Edit: Potentially relevant, this started happening after an OS update was automatically installed on Friday and Windows started nagging to reboot. The first BSOD was before the reboot; the update made a lot of registry changes when the machine came up, and the second BSOD was 40 minutes later.

However most videos on youtube just show the tilt feature that is somehow inverted and forget to include the calibration. I want the user to calibrate their device to whatever position they're in. Which approach should I use until I can change the battery on a weekend? Should I switch from rdate to ntp? The machine runs plenty of cronjobs and thus I need to ensure that everything is started even when the time is changed.

  Recently I've bought a Series 7 Ultra Samsung ultrabook and decided to change the OS from originally installed Windows 8 to Ubuntu 14.04LTS. However, it's difficult not to notice great decrease in battery life: on pre-installed Windows 8 battery would last for about 6 hours while on Ubuntu it's almost empty after 2 hours of same kind of work (wi-fi, web, vlc, spotify, intellij idea). I'm not here to say that Ubuntu's battery performance is worse than Windows, but to ask for suggestions how to improve the situation (2 hours of work is pretty poor battery life). Can you recommend some sources, applications or tips/tricks that would improve battery life on my ultrabook? I really like the Ubuntu experience, but this makes my machine much less reliable. I suspect that graphic video card might be one of the issues here.   In natty pressing Fn+F2 on my Samsung NC10 opened a new notification with the remaining battery power. After upgrading to Oneiric, it opens the power statistics. Is the a way to revert this change? Checking the battery status with the notification is much faster than finding it from the power statistics. I know that the remaining battery time can be set to be shown on the panel but I'm used to Fn+F2.

  Is there any way to revive a dead laptop battery? I have a three year old Dell Latitude laptop that I've been using pretty intensively. After a year or so, the battery dropped dead - if I plug the laptop out it goes into hibernation in a matter of seconds. Probably this was because I kept working on it plugged in all the time, but back then I didn't realize what effect it could have (this was my first laptop). Currently, I'm searching for a new laptop and I was thinking if there was something I could do to get the battery back working. I've found several links (sorry, I'm a new user so I can't post them) about freezing Li-ion batteries, but the opinions seem to mixed - some say that it worked for them, some not. If you've tried the freezing technique please let me know if it works. Or if you know another way to make a dead battery work again, please share here. I've already seen this thread, but I'm not very handy with soldering. If it's the only alternative I'll try it, but there's a big chance that I'll screw it up. Thanks!

  I'm not sure if the problem is in software or my battery is dying, I'll move my question to another forum if it's not a SO question I have a problem with the battery on my laptop - ASUS K52F. It shows incorrect information about capacity. When I unplug the charger it can work some time, but then it will power off without any warnings. Sometimes it will power off right after I unplug the charger.   I have a couple APC UPS - Smart-UPS RT 6000 RM XL Smart-UPS RT 5000 RM XL Unfortunately the power in my office likes to go out (out of my control) and hence the equipment powered by these UPS shuts down. They power a VMware infrastructure environment (VMware Lab Manager) and what I'd like to do is detect when one is on battery (say has been for x amount of time or has x percentage left) and run a script on this event.   I have an old-ish laptop that only works on AC power because the battery is old and no longer holds a charge. I live in Christchurch New Zealand where there has recently been a number of very large earthquakes. During one of these earthquakes my laptop was thrown from my desk to the floor and now does not respond at all when the AC adapter is connected. Given that the laptop is not responding to power, is there another way I could charge a replacement battery for it as I don't currently have funds to repair the AC adapter on the box. My research would suggest that this isn't possible as chargers need to take into account the specifics of the model of battery being charged

• Trackpad and battery on stop working at same time

  Gateway E-475M G Windows 7 Professional SP1 Synaptics TouchPad 15.2.20.0 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery 6.1.7600.16385 It seems that when my battery stops working correctly, my touchpad will also act erratically. Specifically, the computer will charge for a few seconds, then stop charging for another few seconds. This will continue for some time. But if I close the lid, the charging LED will stay lit. As for the touchpad, it'll click or highlight things at random when I can get it to move. As a test, I stopped charging my computer. Now it seems my touchpad is working fine. I've tried to reinstall both the battery and touchpad drivers. I've also started the computer in safe mode, but that didn't help either. Edit: I've now tried booting my computer with an Ubuntu live cd, and the charging problem persists. So, it now seems my computer can only charge continuously as long as it's turned off or sleeping.

  So I've finally got to the 300+ cycles with my MBP 2008's original battery. Apple is pretty much "on the money" too! I am at 79% Health and getting the Condition: Replace Soon warning. So I went out to the closest Apple Store and bought a replacement. I would like to get the same lifespan out of my replacement if possible. My question is: The battery comes with a 2 dot (green) charge on the indicator, should I put the battery in and let it run down and do a full recharge OR begin charging it immediately and then let it run all the way to empty and recharge?

  I recently put Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my wife's Macbook pro because of some software she bought for her business. Since then, the battery life has been abysmal. I've identified and researched one of the problems, which is display brightness. There is no brightness control in the windows power options, but I did manually turn it down in Bootcamp. However, it is still reporting very low battery life estimates. I'm wondering if this is because Windows thinks the display is at full brightness. Can anyone shed any light on this? (Pun intended). Also, are there any other things to look out for that may improve the battery life? (I mean in the context of Mac + Windows, not in general)

  I recently purchased a new, non-Toshiba battery for my Toshiba M700 tablet/laptop. The battery fits fine and the tablet detects and charges it, but when I try to boot up all I get is the Toshiba logo then a flashing cursor in the top-left. I can get to the bios, but no further. • It seems Windows 8.1 killed my two T60 laptop batteries

  Upgraded Windows 7 to Win8 earlier this year, and last week upgraded to Windows 8.1. (Lenovo T60) Had no problem with battery usage when on Win7 nor Win8. After about a week of Win8.1 on my system, the battery stop working, while the system was on. The orange batt. indicator just keeps flashing. The system does not charge the battery (even though I know there was life in it). I installed a known good fully charged battery from another T60, it worked for aboute 40 mins then it instantly died in fron of my eyes. The system now shows the same orange flashing batt. light, but it is not charging. I know both these batteries are still good, they just appear to be dead. My research suggest that the new Win8.1 may not have updated the battery driver to Win8. I have since done that. Same problem. Research i s also pointing me to some 'smart chip' on the batteries that need to a reset. Is this possible ?? Does anyone know a process to reset the 'smart chip' on these batteries (fru# 92P1139) ????

  I've just bought IBM T61 laptop and it has non-orginal battery. Everything was ok (laptop worked without being plugged), but something has changed, and now battery isn't charged. Power Manager says: "This system may not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo-made or authorized. • How to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life?

  I have a brand new Sony Vaio S series laptop.(VPCSA2DGX) It came factory installed with Windows 7 professional Edition 64bit. Runs Intel core i5, 500 GB HDD , 4GB Ram. First I installed ubuntu 11.10 64 bit along side Windows to dual boot. Later,since the problem did not solve, I installed ubuntu 12.04 64bit along side Windows to dual boot. However the problem keeps annoying me. Problem: When running ubuntu 11.10/12.04, the battery lasts only about 1.5 hours. The Fan runs loud and continuously. And there is a lot of heat generated. System monitor shows less than 5% CPU used. My laptop enjoys hybrid graphic and I tried turning off ADM graphic card and keep Intel graphic card on. However I can not get the Fan noise or heat to go away and consequently the battery drain continues. BTW, in windows, the laptop gives 4-5 hours of battery power, Fan is silent and there is no heat problem. Any ideas on how to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life in ubuntu 11.10/12.04?
