  • XPath: How to check multiple attributes across similar nodes

    - by Justin
Hi, If I have some xml like: <root> <customers> <customer firstname="Joe" lastname="Bloggs" description="Member of the Bloggs family"/> <customer firstname="Joe" lastname="Soap" description="Member of the Soap family"/> <customer firstname="Fred" lastname="Bloggs" description="Member of the Bloggs family"/> <customer firstname="Jane" lastname="Bloggs" description="Is a member of the Bloggs family"/> </customers> </root> How do I get, in pure XPath - not XSLT - an xpath expression that detects rows where lastname is the same, but has a different description? So it would pull the last node above? Thanks a mill if you can help, been scratching at it for ages, and I can't find it by searching (apologies if it is) Cheers, J

  • How do I guarante node order for an Xpath 'OR' query

    - by Tom Carter
I have a snippet of XML that looks like <body> Some text.... <nodeA>....</nodeA> more text <someOtherNode> <nodeA>.......</nodeA> </someOtherNode> <nodeB>.......</nodeB> etc..... </body> I'm selecting all nodeA and NodeB nodes inside <body> using an XPATH query similar to "//nodeA|//nodeB" As I understand it, .NET supports XPATH 1.0 which does not guarantee node order. How can I guarantee selected nodes are returned in document order in my OR query : that's to say : nodeA, nodeA, nodeB

  • XPath filter not empty attribute

    - by Marcos Buarque
Hi, I need to filter a XPath expression to grab only a certain attribute as not empty. I tried this: <xsl:template match="DocumentElement/QueryResults[string(@FileName)]"> and this: <xsl:template match="DocumentElement/QueryResults[string-length(@FileName)>0]"> but it did not work. I need the same kind of data returning from the folloing XPath expression... <xsl:template match="DocumentElement/QueryResults"> ... but filtered to avoid items with empty attribute @FileName. Thanks!

  • Performing complicated XPath queries in Scala

    - by Ken Bloom
What's the simplest API to use in scala to perform the following XPath queries on a document? //s:Annotation[@type='attitude']/s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='type' and not(text())] //s:Annotation[s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='id' and not(text())]]/@type The only documentation I can find on Scala's XML libraries has no information on performing complicated real XPath queries. I used to like JDOM for this purpose (in Java), but since JDOM doesn't support generics, it will be painful to work with in Scala. (Other XML libraries for Java have tended to be even more painful in Java, but I admit I don't know the landscape real well.)

  • finding an adjacent node in xml through xpath

    - by kolosy
i have a deeply nested structure (actually parsing out xhtml, so lots of nasty), like so: <tr> <td> <font id="blah"> stuff </font> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> more stuff </td> </tr> and this repeats in a long table. i need an xpath expression that will select the second font tag (or rather it's text()). i was looking at the preceding-sibling axis, but something isn't quite working right. something along the lines of (and pardon me if this is ridiculous, my xpath is rusty) //tr[preceding-sibling::tr/td/font/b]/td/text()

  • Extra characters Extracted with XPath and Python (html)

    - by Nacari
I have been using XPath with scrapy to extract text from html tags online, but when I do I get extra characters attached. An example is trying to extract a number, like "204" from a <td> tag and getting [u'204']. In some cases its much worse. For instance trying to extract "1 - Mathoverflow" and instead getting [u'\r\n\t\t 1 \u2013 MathOverflow\r\n\t\t ']. Is there a way to prevent this, or trim the strings so that the extra characters arent a part of the string? (using items to store the data). It looks like it has something to do with formatting, so how do I get xpath to not pick up that stuff?

  • XPath to find an element with a similar sibling

    - by user364902
Suppose I have this XML: <x> <e a='1' b='A'/> <e a='1' b='B'/> <e a='1' b='A'/> </x> I'd like to write an xpath to find any elements e which: Have attribute @b = 'A' Have the same value for attribute @a The xpath can't reference the literal value of attribute @a, however. It can reference the literal value of attribute @b. Or more generally, I want to find if there are any instances where there are two or more elements e[@b=A'] with the same value for attribute @a. Is this possible?

  • SQLAuthority News – Book Review – Beginning T-SQL 2008 by Kathi Kellenberger

    - by pinaldave
Beginning T-SQL 2008 by Kathi Kellenberger Amazon Link Detail Review: Beginning T-SQL 2008 is one of the best books on the market if you are just beginning to work with Microsoft SQL, or have a little bit of experience and need to learn more quickly. Each chapter of the book introduces a new subject, and builds upon topics covered in previous chapters.  The author of the book, Kathi Kellenberger understands that you need to form a solid foundation of knowledge before moving on to new topics, and sets up each subject nicely.  Because the chapters move in an orderly progression, you continue to use skills you learned earlier. One of the best features of Beginning T-SQL 2008 is that each chapter has multiple examples and exercises.  Many books introduce a topic and then never go back to it.  This book gives enough examples that you will be familiar with the subject when you come across it in real life.  The exercises at the end of the chapter mean that you will be using the skills you learned – and there is no better way to cement a subject in your brain. The book also includes discussions of the common errors that programmers will come across, how to avoid them, and how to fix them if they happen.  Ms. Kellenberger understands that not only do mistakes happen, but they are bound to happen if you aren’t trained properly.  Mistakes are part of the learning process! The book begins by discussions relational theory, so that programmers will understand the way T-SQL works from the ground up.  It also walks readers through writing accurate queries, combining set-based and procedural processing, embedding logic in stored functions, and so much more. Overall, the main goal of Beginning T-SQL 2008 is to introduce novices to SQL programming, and quickly familiarize them with the basics of running the program.  The book is written with the idea that readers will not know any of the technical terms or vocabulary.  However, if you are a little more familiar with SQL and looking to become better, you will still find this book very helpful. Ratting: 4.5+ Stars Summary: I must recommend Beginning T-SQL 2008 highly enough.  If you are going to buy any beginners guide to Transect-SQL, this is the one you should spend your money on.  You can save yourself a lot of time and effort later by using this very affordable manual to learn the basics, which will allow you to become an expert much faster. • Relative XPath node selection with C# XmlDocument

    - by lox
Imagine the following XML document: <root> <person_data> <person> <name>John</name> <age>35</age> </person> <person> <name>Jim</name> <age>50</age> </person> </person_data> <locations> <location> <name>John</name> <country>USA</country> </location> <location> <name>Jim</name> <country>Japan</country> </location> </locations> </root> I then select the person node for Jim: XmlNode personNode = doc.SelectSingleNode("//person[name = 'Jim']"); And now from this node with a single XPath select I would like to retrieve Jim's location node. Something like: XmlNode locationNode = personNode.SelectSingleNode("//location[name = {reference to personNode}/name]"); Since I am selecting based on the personNode it would be handy if I could reference it in the select. Is this possible?.. is the connection there? Sure I could put in a few extra lines of code and put the name into a variable and use this in the XPath string but that is not what I am asking.

  • XPATH query, HtmlAgilityPack and Extracting Text

    - by Soham
I had been trying to extract links from a class called "tim_new" . I have been given a solution as well. Both the solution, snippet and necessary information is given here The said XPATH query was "//a[@class='tim_new'], my question is, how did this query differentiate between the first line of the snippet (given in the link above and the second line of the snippet). More specifically, what is the literal translation (in English) of this XPATH query. Furthermore, I want to write a few lines of code to extract the text written against NSE: <div class="FL gL_12 PL10 PT15">BSE: 523395 &nbsp;&nbsp;|&nbsp;&nbsp; NSE: 3MINDIA &nbsp;&nbsp;|&nbsp;&nbsp; ISIN: INE470A01017</div> Would appreciate help in forming the necessary selection query. My code is written as: IEnumerable<string> NSECODE = doc.DocumentNode.SelectSingleNode("//div[@NSE:]"); But this doesnt look right. Would appreciate some help.

  • Parsing xml with php and xpath

    - by Hyung Suh
Hey guys, I'm trying to parse an xml file to return a item with a specific id only, but having trouble making it work. here's what I have in php $xml_str = file_get_contents("test.xml"); $xml = simplexml_load_string($xml_str); $albid = $_GET['id']; $nodes = $xml->xpath('//library/book[@id=1]'); foreach($nodes as $node) { echo $node['title'].'<br/>'; } First, the php is not returning anything from the xml file. What would I need to fix to return the data? Also, how would I enter $albid into the xpath so that the id will be retrieved from the link? Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks! --and here's the sample xml file-- <library> <book id="1"> <title>PHP and MySQL</title> <author fname="miguel" lname="alvarez">Miguel Alvarez</author> </book> <book id="2"> <title>JAVA 123</title> <author fname="william" lname="vega">WIlliam Vega</author> </book>

  • How to read XML using XPath in Java

    - by kaibuki
Hi guys, I want to read XML data using XPath in Java, so for the information I have gathered I am not able to parse XML according to my requirement. here is what I want to do: Get XML file from online via its URL, then use XPath to parse it, I want to create two methods in it. One is in which I enter a specific node attribute id, and I get all the child nodes as result, and second is suppose I just want to get a specific child node value only <?xml version="1.0"?><howto> <topic name="Java"> <url>http://www.rgagnonjavahowto.htm</url> <car>taxi</car> </topic> <topic ame="PowerBuilder"> <url>http://www.rgagnon/pbhowto.htm</url> <url>http://www.rgagnon/pbhowtonew.htm</url> </topic> <topic name="Javascript"> <url>http://www.rgagnon/jshowto.htm</url> </topic> <topic name="VBScript"> <url>http://www.rgagnon/vbshowto.htm</url> </topic></howto> In above example I want to read all the elements if I search via @name and also one function in which I just want the url from @name 'Javascript' only return one node element. I hope I cleared my question :) Thanks. Kai

  • xPath Groupings how?

    - by David
OK So, I'm learning/using xpath for a basic application thats effectively ripping data off another website. I need to gain the knowledge of each persons Countryy/Suburb/area. In some instances you can get Australia/Victoria/melborne for instance. Others may just be Australia/Melbourne. Or even just Melbourne OR just AUSTRALIA. who knows. So I'm current able to view the below code and rip all of the information with the string xpath search:@" //table/tr/td/tabke/tr/td/font/a, this returns every entry, but what I really want is to group each lot separately. I hope someone out there on planet earth knows what I just tried to explain... and can help... Good day! <font face="arial" size="2"> <strong>Location:</strong> <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Australia" target="mapblast" style="text-decoration:none">Australia</a>, <a href='http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Australia%20Victoria'target="mapblast" style='text-decoration:none'>Victoria</a>, <a href='http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Australia%20Melbourne%20Victoria'target="mapblast" style='text-decoration:none'>Melbourne</a> </font> </td> </tr>
