  • Problems with MediaPlayer, raw resources, stop and start

    Hello everybody, I'm new in Android development and I have the next question/problem. I'm playing around with the MediaPlayer class to reproduce some sounds/music. I am playing raw resources (res/raw) and it looks kind of easy. To play a raw resource, the MediaPlayer has to be initialized like this: MediaPlayer mp = MediaPlayer.create(appContext, R.raw.song); mp.start(); Until here there is no problem. The sound is played, and everything works fine. My problem appears when I want to add more options to my application. Specifically when I add the "Stop" button/option. Basically, what I want to do is...when I press "Stop", the music stops. And when I press "Start", the song/sound starts over. (pretty basic!) To stop the media player, you only have to call stop(). But to play the sound again, the media player has to be reseted and prepared. mp.reset(); mp.setDataSource(params); mp.prepare(); The problem is that the method setDataSource() only accepts as params a file path, Content Provider URI, streaming media URL path, or File Descriptor. So, since this method doesn't accept a resource identifier, I don't know how to set the data source in order to call prepare(). In addition, I don't understand why you can't use a Resouce identifier to set the data source, but you can use a resource identifier when initializing the MediaPlayer. I guess that I'm missing something. I wonder if I am mixing concepts, and the method stop() doesn't have to be called in the "Stop" button. Any help? Thanks in advanced!!!

But after I add these two lines before process.Start() (to run the program in the context of another user account): startInfo.UserName = userName; startInfo.Password = securePassword; The program is not executed and process.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd() returns an empty string. No exceptions are thrown. userName and securePassword are correct (in case of incorrect credentials an exception is thrown). How to run the program in the context of another user account?

    I'm currently launching an asynchronous job with PHP to perform some tests. To make it work, I found on SO some tips, like the use of popen and start: $commande = "testu.bat"; $pid = popen('start /B ' . $commande, 'r'); $status = pclose($pid); The testu.bat's folder is in my user PATH. This script performs some task, and to control it's execution, it should generates a log file, but I never get it. Whereas if I just remove the /B option, it works fine and I get my log file. Did I miss something about background execution? How can I catch the error informations when it is running in the background?

Is there a way to get Win7 to use a taller Start menu with more items when I'm using the LCD and a shorter Start menu with fewer items when using the netbook's built in screen? (I'm a programmer so capable of technical solutions if there's no ready-made solution.)

I understand that the start menu is part of explorer.exe but I do not intend to replace explorer.exe. Is it possible to launch the replacement start menu by clicking the native start orb? Is it also possible to launch the replacement by pressing the Windows key or ctrl+esc ? Is the Windows key a macro for ctrl+esc ? or is it two different hotkeys that do the same thing? May I know if there is any software that do any one of these things?

  • Cold Fusion 8 and 9 on IIS 6

    I have a client, who against my better judgement has insisted on doing the following. They have a single IIS 6 on Win 2003 Server Enterprise. It currently runs ColdFusion 8. They want me to install ColdFusion 9 on the server without changing any of the existing sites so that they can develop in CF 9 and upgrade other sites in the future. Yes, I have begged them to use a Dev server, or run on apache on the same box. Can this even be done? Many thanks in advance! DM

  • Windows 7 - Stuck at splash screen on cold boot only

    Hey guys, Wondering if anyone has any ideas on what's causing my pc to lockup at the splash screen on bootup for 1-3minutes. This ONLY happens on the first power up, subsequent reboots run fine. Running on a Falcon II SSD I did the customary move of files to another drive when i first formatted the ssd. The slow first boot only started happening recently. Thanks in advance!

    I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones.     I have to be honest here for a moment. The one thing people most complain about when they talk about Windows 8 is that they miss the Start Button. You know, that dreaded thing that everybody hated when it was introduced… I usually don’t go into these kinds of discussions unless I am personally involved but this one I cannot let go. Why are people doing this? Windows 8 is a great OS. They have changed, updated and perfected so many things so there is enough to talk or write about. Yet, all articles or discussions come down to “Where’s my start button?” In order to save myself from having to explain this every single time I wrote this post and from now on I will simply refer to this blog when I get asked that question. Here it is. Your start menu is there. It’s right in front of your nose. It’s two dimensional, it’s got huge buttons (although they are more than just buttons, they’re alive and therefore called Live Tiles). Just go through those tiles and click what ever you want to start up. Don’t want to look for an item? Just start typing. Really it is that simple. When you are on the start screen just start typing (part of) the name of the program you want and you’ll find it.  As you see in the attached example I started typing “word” and it found Word, Wordfeud, Wordament etc. If you want to find something else besides a program (say you want to change the region you’re in) just click on Settings (it will already show you how many hits there are in that section). People, my request is: dive into something before you complain about it. Look around. This feature is so much easier to use than the old stuff. But you have to know about it. So. I won’t get into this discussion anymore.

  • Google App Engine - Is this just a fluke, or could changing the version of an app improve cold-start

    Here is the situation: I had an app with a cold start time of about 4 seconds. I was trying to improve the cold start time by removing a bunch of libraries and code I didn't really need. After doing that the cold start time was about 3 seconds latency, and 3 seconds CPU time used. I changed the version number in appengine-web.xml, and nothing else. And now I have two versions of my app that have the exact same code, up and running. For cold starts, the newer version uses 1800ms to 1900ms in CPU time, and has 1800ms to 2300ms in latency. For cold starts, the older version uses 2800ms to 3000ms in CPU time, and has 2300ms to 3600ms in latency. So far I have sampled 4 cold starts for each version.
