  • development and music recording machine suggestions?

    I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

  • sharepoint cannot export all fields to spreadsheet

    I am trying to make an export of a list in SharePoint to an Excel spreadsheet. I have added all needed fields to my default view of the list, (like Publishing Start Date / End date) but some fields (like Publishing Start Date / End date) don't show up in Excel. Any idea? EDIT: My setup is a MOSS standard edition, the needed fields (Publishing Start Date / End date) are standard SharePoint publishing fields. The versions of Excel I tried it with are 2003 and 2007

  • How could I import Postgres data dumps into MS SQL?

    I have some data that is from a Postgres database dump (not csv or anything) and I am looking to get it into MS SQL. Is there an easy way to do this or a free tool that doesn't have limits on data import size etc? The Postgres is on a Debian VM and I could export it to csv in there but I am new to Linux and don't know how I would transfer it from the VM to Win 7. Thanks

  • installing lots of perl modules

    Hi, I've been landed with the job of documenting how to install a very complicated application onto a clean server. Part of the application requires a lot of perl scripts, each of which seem to require lots of different perl modules. I don't know much about perl, and I only know one way to install the required modules. This means my documentation now looks this: Type each of these commands and accept all the defaults: sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install JSON' sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Date::Simple' sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Log::Log4perl' sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Email::Simple' (.... continues for 2 more pages... ) Is there any way I can do all this one line like I can with aptitude i.e. Type the following command and go get a coffee: sudo aptitude install openssh-server libapache2-mod-perl2 build-essential ... Thank you (on behalf of the long suffering people who will be reading my document) EDIT: The best way to do this is to use the packaged versions.   • Database hidden in SQL Server

    During an aborted TFS import (2008 into 2010), I have managed to "lose" a database in 2008. The database is not visible in Management Studio, but the SQL Server exe has a handle on the .mdf file (according to UnLocker), it says it cannot attach it because the file is in use and it cannot attach a copy of the file (created when SQL Server was stopped), as it says a DB of the same name is already attached. Given I am using the same TFS admin account I have always used and have always been able to see the database in, why is this database missing and, more importantly, how do I get it back again?

  • SSH as root using public key still prompts for password on RHEL 6.1

    I've generated rsa keys with cygwin ssh-keygen and copied them to the server with ssh-copy-id -i id_rsa.pub [email protected] I've got the following settings in my /etc/ssh/sshd_config file RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes AuthorizedKeysFile .ssh/authorized_keys PermitRootLogin yes When I ssh [email protected] it still prompts for a password. The output below from /usr/sbin/sshd -d says that a matching keys was found in the .ssh/authorized_keys file, but it still requires a password from the client. I've read a bunch of web postings about permissions on files and directories, but nothing works. Is it possible to ssh with keys in RHEL 6.1 or is this forbidden?   • Ping from specific network adapter on Windows

    Hey, I've been troubleshooting network issues on servers with 2 NICs and laptops with wired and wireless cards. How can I force the PING and TELNET to be sent from a specific adapter? I know it's a trouble with windows. Turning off one of the adapters is not an option, I am always connected through one of the adapters. There must be some command line option to prefer one adapter over the other. Thanks

  • Problem deploying GWT application on apache and tomcat using mod_jk

    I'm trying to deploy a GWT app on Apache using mod_jk connector. I have compiled the application and tested it on tomcat on the address localhost:8080/loginapp and it works ok.   • How do you map a solo press of a modifier key to its own function or mapping on Windows?

    Today on hacker news there was a clever article on custom shortcut keys. The author talks about a technique for remapping a modifier key such as CTRL to ESC if CTRL were pressed without a modifier. This is useful in vim because of how often you need to press ESC. Another technique he describes is mapping the open parenthesis, ( to the left shift key, and ) to the right shift key. If another key is pressed when shift is held down, the shift key behaves normally. The author describes the software he uses on OSX, but is there a way to do this on Windows? I've heard of AutoHotKey but it seems to only fire macros when simple keys are pressed, rather than the conditional state switch that this would require.

  • pfsense log file retention

    We have a pfSense firewall in our datacentre. By default, pfSense is only storing 500K of firewall filter logs, which is only a few hours for us. How can I increase this? pfSense uses clog rather than the usual BSD newsyslog. I only want the log for debugging firewall rules, not compliance or anything, and the firewall has 100GB of spare disk space, so I'd rather have the logs on the firewall itself than set up a syslog server.

  • Cannot Expand/Collapse tasks in Microsoft Project 2010

    I opened an existing Microsoft Project file today and was unable to expand/collapse the subtasks use the cursor and the '+/-' signs beside the parent tasks. I am able to expand and collapse using the 'View-Outline' ribbon icon. However when I attempt to do this using the mouse on specific tasks, my cursor will not perform the task. My cursor is a 'white cross' when I need it to be an 'arrow'. I'm assuming this is something minor that I'm missing. Any assistance appreciated. Thanks

  • Squid - Selective reverse proxy and forward proxy

    I'd like to setup a squid instance to do selective reverse proxy for a configured list of URLs whilst acting as a normal forward proxy for everything else. We are building new infrastructure, parallel live as it where, and I want to have a proxy that people can use that will force selective traffic into the new platform whilst just acting as a forward proxy for anything else. This makes it very easy for people/systems to test the portions of the new platform we want without having to change too much, just use a proxy address. Is such a setup possible ?

  • I accidentally hid my Gnome Panel

    I got a new tablet pc, and in attempt to hide the empathy mail icon, accidentally made the entire panel dissappear. (The one at the top that has applications/places/system, and battery life/network connections etc). I don't believe I killed it, because alt+f2, then gnome-panel does not bring it back. I've tried alt+ctrl+backspace to reset gnome, that didn't bring it back. It must just be some setting like 'hide' or something... Any tips to get it back? Thanks.

  • MDADM RAID5 array showing as CLEAN FAULTY

    A drive dropped out of my raid 5 array yesterday. It looks like the reason was due to a bad controller so I switched it out and attempted to re-add the drive but mdadm claimed it couldn't do it. So I zerod the superblock and just added the drive normally and left it to resync. When I came to check on the array this morning I was unable to mount it at all and it's now showing as CLEAN FAULTY with two drives missing. The two missing drives are listed as spare and faulty spare. Is there anything I can do in this situation or is the array gone?

  • Hyper-V shutdown/start up host causing issues in VMs

    I have a single physical host, running 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, all fully updated. On that host I am running 3 clients, a DC, a web server and a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. All are running on Windows Server 2008 R2, again all fully patched. Generally all is fine, but sometimes and not repeatably, when I shutdown the host properly, which suspends the Clients, when it all comes up again, SQL Server is no longer running and the IIS App Pool I am running the website in needs to be told which account to run in again! Any ideas!?

  • Limit user to one CPU core in windows 7

    I let my family members use my pc over rdp to play their flash-based games as their laptops overheat if they use them directly. I have it setup so I can use the pc at the same time as them. The pc has a quad core cpu and I would like to be able to assign one of those cores to the user logged in via RDP so that the other 3 cores are left alone. Is this possible? They login via a specific user account setup for the purpose. Thanks for any advice!
