  • How to get HP ASM to work under Xen Hypervisor?

    I have a HP DL560, currently running Debian Squeeze as dom0 on Xen Hypervisor, and the fans constantly run at 100%. In the past this wasn't a problem because I could install HP's ASM which includes fan management. However since I have installed a xen enabled kernel, the hp-health driver (the piece of ASM that controls the fans) won't start (at boot or manually). Anyone know of any way to make it work? (Or any other method of controlling the fans safely.) Note that the server has four i386 Xeon CPUs, each with its own fan, plus an extra case fan, and all of the fans can be doubled for redundancy. Also everything works fine under Squeeze without the xen-enabled kernel (can still boot the other one and hp-health loads fine on boot).

  • Can't figure out how to make Slitaz USB persistent

    I installed Slitaz on my USB. However I can't figure out how to make it persistent automatically. There are different sources telling me different ways to make it persistent. One told me to add "slitaz home=usb" to the syslinux.cfg file like this: append initrd=/boot/rootfs.gz rw root=/dev/null vga=normal autologin slitaz home=usb but it didn't work for me. http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/handbook/liveusb.html gave an example of how to do it manually but I didn't try it and I also want it to happen automatically. custompc.co.uk/features/602451/make-any-pc-your-own-with-linux-on-a-usb-key.html is an older article that also explains how to make the USB persistent but I don't want to try it cause it looks outdated (from 2008) does anyone know the best way to make the USB automatically persistent?

  • Gist (or other git-backed pastebin) on my own Server?

    Does anyone know of a package to allow me to run a clone of gist on my own internal servers? I'd like to encourage our dev. teams to use a GIST like pastebin (with syntax highlighting and, preferably, with a git-based or git compatible backend). However, I want the code to remain within our network. Suggestions? (By the way, I've glanced at things like pygist but that's a client rather than providing the pastebin server side functionality.   • "My Documents" as the first class citizen in "Documents" in Windows 7

    In windows 7, you can have a "Document" as a menu on the "Start Menu". However, it lead to sub-items "My Documents" and "Public Documents". As well as only me is using my notebook, "Public Documents" is useless and waste me for a click to the "My Documents". So, my question is -- how do I hack the registry(without hacking DLLs) to make the contents in "My Documents" as the first class citizen in the start menu? PS. after read this, I've removed the "Public Documents" from the library. But still, it takes me one more click

  • find the next due date after today within a group in an Excel PivotTable

    I have got a table set up in one sheet with "transactions". Each row contains a name of a vendor, the amount owed or paid depending on transaction type, and the due date/transaction date. Here is some simplified sample data: Vendor Date Invoice Payment Vendor A 6/30 $200 Vendor A 6/30 ($200) Vendor B 7/5 $500 Vendor B 7/5 ($500) Vendor C 10/28 $50 Vendor A 10/30 $100 Vendor C 11/15 $50 I have already built a PivotTable from that table to group these transactions by vendor and sum the remainder owed. What I'm trying to figure out is how to, for each vendor, get the next due date (min date of the group, excluding dates < Today()), or if there is no next due date then I want to see the max date for that group. Here is what my PivotTable looks like, plus the date column I'd like to add (assuming Today() = 10/23): Vendor Date Owed Vendor B 7/5 - Vendor C 10/28 $100 Vendor A 10/30 $100 I know calling it next due date might not be so accurate if I end up with the date of a payment in that column, but I'm ok with that. tl;dr : I want to find the next earliest date within each group, or the last date. How do I do this?

    I'm probably a complete n00b concerning serverfault related questions, but our IT department makes a bold statement I wish to verify. I've searched the internet, but can find nothing related to my question, so I come here. We have Threat Management Gateway 2010 and we used to just route the request to IIS and it contained the ip address so we could see where it was coming from. But now they turned on "Requests apear to come the TMG server" so ip addresses aren't forwarded anymore. Every request has the ip of the TMG server. Now the idea behind this is that because of multipath bgp routes, the incoming request goes over RouteA, but the acknowledgement messages could return over RouteB. The claim is that because the request doesn't come from the first known source, our proxy, but instead from IIS, some smart routers at the visitor of our websites don't recognize the acknowledgement message and filter it out. In other words, the response never arrives. Again, this is the claim. But I cannot find ANY resources on the internet that support this claim. I do read about bgp multipath, but more in the case that there are alternative routes when the fastest route fails for some reason. So is the claim completely bogus or is there (some) truth to it? Can someone explain or point me to resources? Thanks in advance!

  • Splitting CA component off puppet master

    We are scaling our puppet infrastructure and would like to split off the CA component from the puppet master server to another server. Part of the change involves a servername change for the puppetmaster too. I'm no puppet expert but i'm at a point where I -think- we need to create a SAN cert with both the old and new names in it (to be safe), and then re-sign all the agent nodes all over again which is going to be a royal PITA. Is there a quicker/smarter way to do this? We already have hundreds of agent nodes out there and individually re-signing them will be an arduous task.

  • Super-silent (mid tower) case and fan combo

    I want to build a HTPC for music/video/blu-ray playback (no gaming). I don't need an expensive HTPC case but just want to go with a standard medium tower case. However, I want it to be super silent so it doesn't make any annoying fan/disk noises when I watch movies. Ideally, it shouldn't make any noticeable noise at all. I understand that choosing a board, CPU and graphic card that run cool and don't consume a lot of power is important for designing a quiet machine, and I think I got that covered. However, there are so many choices in regards to cases, fans and power supplies that it's hard to get started. What are your recommendations for a case/fan (cpu+case)/power supply combination that run absolutely silent and can cool a standard Intel system with a low-power (possibly passively cooled) graphic card? I'm usually a fan of Antec cases, would an Antec Mini P180 be a good starting point? If so, which case fans, CPU fan and power supply would you recommend?

    I'm looking for a good performance monitoring service for websites. I know about some of the available general monitoring services that check for uptime and notify you about unavailable services. But I'm specifically looking for a service with an emphasis on performance. I.e., I would like to see reports with detailed performance statistics from multiple locations world-wide, with a break-down on how long it took to fetch the different website resources, including third-party scripts such as Google Analytics and so on (the report should contain similar details such as the FireBug Net tab). Are there any such services and if so, which one is the best?

    I guess all of you have a pair/set of speakers for your MP3s. I am just interesting to how do they do when they are not playing? How actually the power spent by the speaker? Does any the below cases matter? Idle / Silence input When you computer is off / not connected Raise the volume by hardware (turn/push the button on the speaker) Raise the volume by software (do it with your mouse) BTW, to save the world.   • Need help solving "Disk Error Press any key to restart" after blue screen in XP.

    I have had a couple of BSOD's lately and after the last one I got the disk error message. The disk shows up during the BIOS portion of the boot. It is in a Dell Precision 690 so the F12 key gives me a boot menu. I can boot from the utility partition, and if I specifically select the hard drive from the boot menu it will boot fine. Any ideas why if I just try to do an unattended boot, it give the error listed in the title?

  • MacBook Pro shutting down instantly after attempt to update firmware

    I tried to apply a firmware update on a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz (2008), and after rebooting, the fans kicked up to maximum, the screen lit up, and then it immediately died. Now when I try to boot, it does the same thing: the fans crank to max, the screen lights up, and then it dies after about 2 seconds. Resetting the power manager does nothing. It doesn't stay up long enough to choose another boot drive or boot from CD. I have no idea what else to try. Help?

    What is the best way to backup and restore all my everything in Foobar2000? I was once clicked on a "Reset all" button which provide somehow a stupid feature - clear all setting and playlist. The story tell that, remember to do backup when there is nothing goes wrong. (And I don't think they should put the button on the middle of all the configuration screen.) But how? Are there any script or plugins to help me to backup all settings? I cannot find a button of export or import my settings.

  • Hyper-V VM Lab + RRAS + RDP

    My background is primarily .NET Development with some System Administration skills. I'm trying to set up a VM Lab for me to test System Applications I'm developing but I've only ever done System Administration in already set up environments; I've never set up my own. My current setup: Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host on physical machine (only role enabled) with two NICs. First NIC dedicated for Management w/ DHCP address from company's network. Second NIC dedicated to RRAS VM w/ DHCP address from company's network. RRAS VM has two NICS, one is virtual private internal only NIC w/ static entry. The other is the physical NIC mentioned above. I've joined it to my VMLab.net internal domain. My Active Directory Domain Controller server (ADCT) also runs DNS, DHCP, and Certificate Services which I'm familiar with but don't understand completely. RRAS is already set up with NAT to provide the private internal network with Internet access. What I would like to do is be able to RDP into the servers/computers on the VMLab.net domain from my computer. Do I need to add the Remote Desktop Services role and enable the Remote Desktop Gateway service on RRAS in order to do this or is there a way to set up port forwarding on RRAS to just allow a direct connection to the internal servers...or both?     Have two web servers, development/staging and production. Code and some documentation is moved from the staging area to production either through on-demand jobs or nightly via a global replication job. The production server of course sits isolated in a DMZ. There is some content that gets uploaded to the live server that needs to be replicated back to staging. Our security team is locking the network down (and they should) and restricting access to the live server. Best suggestions for replication of "live" data back to "stage" and backing up the live server also.

  • VMware Server guest systems are extremely slow with IO load on host (Ubuntu 8.04)

    We are experiencing performance issues with a VMware Server 2.x installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 host. When the host system is generating IO load (for example, copying large files as part of a backup operation), the guests (also Ubuntu 8.04) become extremely unresponsive and slow (simple Apache HTTP requests taking 5 seconds instead of the usual 200ms). We tried optimizing various aspects of the VMs, but the issue remains. Is there a known bug with VMware performance under linux if host IO load is high? Is there a way to fix this? Is this only an issue with Ubuntu systems, or have you seen it on other systems before? Thanks!

    My mail server (Ubuntu 10.04) uses mysql for virtual domains, virtual users. For some reason, mysqld has started refusing connections from localhost. I see these in the mail server log: Oct 6 00:31:14 apollo postfix/trivial-rewrite[16888]: fatal: proxy:mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql-virtual_domains.cf(0,lock|fold_fix): table lookup problem and: Oct 7 13:39:15 apollo postfix/proxymap[25839]: warning: connect to mysql server 127.0.0.1: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 0 I also get the following in auth.log: Oct 6 22:33:31 apollo mysqld[31775]: refused connect from 127.0.0.1 Telnet to the local port: root@apollo:/var/log/mysql# telnet localhost 3306 Trying ::1... Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. Connection closed by foreign host. root@apollo:/var/log/mysql# I am not sure why this started happening, but there was a disk failure in a RAID 1 pair a bit earlier that day. So it's possible I have a damaged config file or something. But mail was working for at least an hour after the drive event, so who knows for sure? phpmyadmin works fine, and the databases themselves look like they're intact. I think/believe that selinux and iptables are disabled and not running. So ... why is mysqld refusing connections from localhost? What should I check? What processes might cause this if a .conf file or possibly a binary was damaged? Which other log files might contain clues? I've enabled "general logging" in /etc/mysql/my.cnf, but I get no interesting or informative entries there. Thanks, m00tpoint
