  • How to identify doc, ppt, xls files

    So I was wondering how would you differentiate ppt, xls and doc files from each other in linux regardless of extensions. I tried 'file' but from the looks of it, all of MSOffice files are categorized under the same file type. Similarly I'm having trouble with docx, xlsx and pptx files, since they're essentially all zip files containing a bunch of xml. Thank you for your help! P.S. I also tried a python script importing the magic module, but no go.

  • How to compress .pdfs in word 2007?

    Hi I am trying to send my cover letter and resume away but apparently it is too big to send through craigs list(my computer says the total size is 500kb) as it has a 600kb limit(so small should be at least a meg). Hi there. You recently tried to email Some job Email, an anonymous craigslist address. However, your message was too big to be sent through our system. Craigslist has a 600KB limit on the messages we'll send. Please reduce the size of your mail and try again. Thanks for using craigslist. So when I convert my word 2007(.docx) files to pdf they become huge. Like they got from 32kb to 320kb. So is there a way I can either get around craigslist limits or compress my pdfs a bit to make it happy. I don't want to send zips and stuff since the person who gets it might not even know what to do. I rather not send .docx since not sure if will have office 2007 or the compatibility view installed and I rather just send it as pdf(as some place require it anyways to be in pdfs). Thanks

  • Creating MS Word 2010 Relative Links?

    Okay here is what I've tried so far for creating relative links in my MS Word Documents. In my document from the ribbon I select the File tab. I then select Info from the side bar. Click the properties drop down from the right hand column. (a bit difficult to find initially, since it looks like text not a drop down, but it's there). Click Advanced Properties The <document-name>.docx Properties Dialog Appears I enter .\ to specify that I want a relative path for the links in my document. I click OK. I go back into my document select some text and attempt to make a link out of it clicking the Insert tab of the ribbon, and then clicking Hyperlink. I then select a document from the current folder, and strip the full path from it, leaving just the name of the .docx file to which I wish to link. Then I click OK. The link appears, I try to click it using Ctrl+Click. I am informed that the address of the site is not valid. Check the address and try again. What could I possibly be doing wrong here? I just want a relative link. It's so easy in to do this in HTML.

  • Remove mailmerge data source via OpenXML

    I have some code that uses OpenXML to open up a docx file, find all mailmerge fields, and replace them with data (ignoring the datasource that may have been provided). I initially tested this against a document created in Office 2007 and it seemed to work great. We then created one in 2003 based off an Excel spreadsheet data source and saved it to 2007 docx format. When we open the file produced by my code, Word warns the user that it is going to execute some SQL, specifically "SELECT * from 'Sheet1$'". It has options of Yes/No. Selecting Yes requires I find the data source. Selecting No brings me to the document, which appears to be correct. I'm not sure why I'm now seeing this pop up. Perhaps it's due to a different data source for the 2003 document? My hope was that there was a way to delete all references to any datasources and that the pop-up wouldn't show. I found this, but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

    Hi, I have to find/replace text from a word document. It works fine for plain text spread through the document, however when the text is in a textbox, the standard find/replace approach doesn't reach it. I found a vba solution, however since I am working in C#, I would like to find a solution in C#. The word document is in 2007 format and my visual studio is 2010. I am using .Net Framework 3.5, but if required, I can consider moving to 4.0.     I am looking for a report generation tool in ruby or rails which allows the user to define a template, then fetch data into the created template. I have been looking through "The Ruby Box: reporting section." There are two reporting tools I have looked at: Thin Reports: It is really good. You can create your own report template with the template editor. Then you can produce PDF reports using thinreports gems. ODF Report: You can create a template ODF file using Open Office and MS Word, and you can use that template to generate the report. Both of these solutions lack the ability to draw charts. Does anyone know of similar reporting tools that can draw charts within a given report? I have tried the RTF Ruby Library. It works, but shares the limitation that it cannot draw charts and graphs. The minimum requirements are: Able to create customizable templates. (e.g. design layout, set font size, color, embed images etc.) Able to draw tables and charts. Template could be in Docx or excel or xml or any other common file format. Report output report must be in Docx or RTF format. Thanks

    For an Intranet web application (document management), I want to show a list of files associated with a certain customer. The resulting HTML is like this: <a href="file:///server/share/dir/somefile.docx">somefile.docx</a> <a href="file:///server/share/dir/someotherfile.pdf">somefile.pdf</a> <a href="file:///server/share/dir/yetanotherfile.txt">yetanotherfile.txt</a> This works fine. Unfortunetly, when clicking on a text file (or image file), Internet Explorer (and I guess most other browsers as well) insist on showing it in the browser instead of opening the file with the associated application (e.g. Notepad). In our case, this is undesired behavior, since it does not allow the user to edit the file. Is there some workaround to this behavior (e.g. something like <a href="file:///..." open="external">)? I'm aware that this is a browser-specific thing, and an IE-only solution would be fine (it's an Intranet application after all).

    I'm working through a small file upload script (learning experience) and I noticed that when selecting microsoft office related files (.doc or .docx for example) the file objects do not have a type specified: For .doc files I had expected the type to be "application/msword" and along the same train of thought .docx to be "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document". In the cases when the type cannot be determined is the correct course of action to look at the file extension and match that to the "expected" content / mime type?     I'm using Microsoft Office 2003. I have installed 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, Powerpoint 2007' to support new xml based formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). Now given that I have installed Compatibility pack, can I create or open a Microsoft Excel 2007 file (.xlsx) having more than 256 columns in Excel 2003? If no, then how can I achieve the same. My observation: When I open a .xlsx file in Excel 2003 with compatibility, I can't see more than 256 columns (till Column IV).

  • Spell check doesn't work in protected forms in Word 2011 for Mac

    We have a form template many staff members use. We created it in Word 2004 for Mac, and I was told a shortcoming was there was no way to turn on the spell checker (a real hassle!). I hoped this would be fixed in 2011, but when I open the form and save it as a .docx, the spell check still doesn't work. Many menu choices, including Language and Spelling and Grammar are grayed. Is there any way to get spell check in a protected, fillable form?

    I need to output some complex equations in Word 2010 (docx). To do so I write most of the equations in tex and use pandoc to translate them as Word formulas. However I have a problem with the following tex equation: \sum_{m=1}^\infty\sum_{n=1}^\infty In Word the resulting two summation signs are not of the same size but the latter is smaler than the first one. Is there any workaround to solve this? I would deeply appreciate any help. Thank you Andy

  • How to make a Table of Content auto-update?

    I am using Word 2007, but saving my documents in .doc (as opposed to .docx) formats because that's company policy. I have the ToC set up fine, but is there a way to have it update automatically (at document open, save or otherwise)? Word help suggests that it should update upon opening the document, but that doesn't seem to happen. Any ideas?

    I need to read some .docx files and the standard 3.0.1 version of OpenOffice writer that comes with Unbuntu 9.04 just ain't handling it. I tried the instructions from the following site: http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Install-OpenOffice-org-3-1-on-Ubuntu-9-04-111105.shtml, both the GUI steps in the main article, and a scripted version in one of the comments, but my system never seems to do the partial update, and the OpenOffice version is unchanged after I uninstall and reinstall it from the command line. Has anybody had similar problems?

    We just recently installed and have been using SharePoint 2010 and have run into a bit of a problem opening Excel spreadsheets with the xlsx extension. We are able to upload a spreadsheet with the xlsx extension, however, when we attempt to download the same spreadsheet we are getting the following error: Excel An error has occured. Please try again. We can open xls files fine as well as docx and pptx files.

If I associate .doc files to any .desktop file generated by Wine it will launch Word, but it will use Wine icon.
