    On November 15, 2012, Oracle Certification exam results became available directly from Oracle's certification portal, CertView. This change requires candidates to authenticate their CertView accounts before being able to access their exam results.   • Visual Studio 2010: Fun with extensions

    One of the powerful things that has come into Visual Studio over the last few years has been joy of extensions. With 2010 there seems to be even more!! Of course teaching old dogs like myself new tricks always takes time but interestingly enough some of the rules I learnt early in my working life over 30 years ago still hold true!! A derivation of one that was knocked into during my engineering apprenticeship and associated exams was RTFQ! Read the ‘flippin’ question. (I replaced the original ‘F’ with a more palatable version here!). Today I forgot that rule and didn’t RTFI (I being instructions) and spent a fruitless hour wondering why my Entity Framework POCO generator never appeared in the new project template list when I wanted to add it!! It was simple of course – I had only installed the Entity Framework POCO generator for web sites and not building a web project meant it would never appear!!! A quick look again I found the ‘other’ extension that supported my project type! So RTFI!!

  • Anyone heard of 'tank tracking'?

    Someone I know told me about some seriously cutting edge blackhat SEO that he called 'tank tracking'. He said that it is some sort of code (he believes written in Python) that 'sits' around the outside perimeter of your visible webpage and listens for an incoming search spider. when a spider enters the page, it traps it in this weird wormhole, making it loop through, I don't know, certain keywords or something.... the result is that a SE like google would consequently give the page a full 100 rating (this person told me Google bestows some sort of scoring app once you've passed a certain number of their exams). A quick google search on 'tank tracking seo', 'tank tracking blackhat seo' and 'tank tracking google' yielded zero results. Let me backtrack a bit and say that I am not interested in utilizing blackhat techniques. I'm just astonished that something like this might be out in the world. Anyone heard of this?

  • What's the difference between Microsoft's MCSD and MCPD certications?

    I am looking on the website but the difference between the two isn't explained. To complicate matters a Google search tells me that developers should focus on the MCPD qualifications but an examination of the MCPD section of the site is telling me that the Web Application exams will expire in July 2013! It seems out of date. Meanwhile the MCSD exam seems to be a lot more up to date with references to HTML5/ASP.net 4.5 MVC applications! What's the difference? Are the MCPD certifications going to be updated after July?

    What would be the way to design a system which has logic that may change year wise? There is an application which conducts online exams. There are five questions for a particular subject. The questions may (or may not) change year wise. As per my current design, the questions in database are stored year wise. There are some year specific code logic as well. In order to enable the application for another year, the year specific database records and code will be copied or duplicated. How to avoid this code duplication?

    Hi guys! I seriously need some advice on getting MCTS certified (Windows Communication Foundation Development) I just cannot go to a MS certification courses as they are very expensive here and far from my hometown. I want to self educate myself and I don't know where to start with. My problem is finding good study materials and sample exam questions. I haven't taken any Microsoft exams before so I have got no idea what they would ask me on the exam (70-513). Can anyone give me some ideas on how to start from scratch?     Possible Duplicate: Why should you get MCTS certified? Are microsoft certificates useful for anything more than beeing a bonus on job interviews? I do believe in formal training but i'm sceptical about their value, specialy if i dont' take classes (not enough time/money) but study at home/online and than go directly to take exams. Would you recomend taking preparation classes, or are they just waste of time? (or perhaps is whole certification thing waste of time?) (i have several years of expirience and currently working in software development)

  • Is it possible to hide some topics in phpBB forum?

    I would like to be able to hide some of the topics in a phpBB-based forum temporarily from the users - perhaps with the exception of administrators and moderators. I am using the forum for my students and I have solutions of some problems from exams and tests there - posted either by me or by some of the students. I plan to use the same or very similar problems during the next academic year. So I don't want the students to see them, but I want to make the solutions visible again after the tests; so that I do not have to post solutions to same questions again. Is something like this possible? Is this a standard part of phpBB, or do I need to install some modification(s) for it?

    Hi Everyone, As we move the Java EE6 exams from beta to production, you may notice that we have made a slight change in the branding. Instead of being branded Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), these new credentials are now branded Oracle Certified Expert (OCE). One area where we use the Expert brand is for credentials where the technology is advanced or broader than the path based credential requires. Some are high-end add-on certifications, and others have significant additional technological breadth. In these cases, the Expert brand is an indication that someone is tested in more advanced or in-depth skills - beyond the traditional path-based certification. A few examples are RAC Expert for DBAs, or SQL Expert - also for DBAs. Because (1) all of the Java EE6 credentials require that candidates become certified first in Java SE6, and (2) many people earn more than one Java EE credential, we felt that the Expert branding would be more appropriate.   • Where to go from here, how to improve / learn more

    I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses!   • Why Java interfaces can't have constructors?

    This question showed up on my mid-term exams and I've been searching for correct answer for some time. I know that Java interfaces can't be directly instantiated so they don't need constructors and that they can have only public static final attributes so they don't need constructors to set them up but that's not the expected answer.
