  • Facebook: Hide Your Status Updates From Your Boss/Ex or Any Specific Friend

    Sometime we want to hide our status updates from specific people who are already accepted as Friends in Facebook. Do you wonder why we need to accept someone as friend and then hide status updates from them? Well, may be you have to accept a friend request from your boss, but certainly love to hide status updates as well as other Facebook activities from him. Something similar goes with few annoying friends whom you cant’ de-friend but like to hide your updates. Thanks to Facebook for providing fine grain privacy options on controlling what we want to share and with whom we want to share. It’s very easy to block one or more specific friends from seeing your status updates. Here are the step by step instructions: 1. Login to Facebook and go to Privacy Settings Page. It shows a page something similar to what is shown in the below image. 2. Click on “Customize settings” link 3. Expand the privacy options available in the section Things I Share -> Posts by me. Choose Customise from the list of available options   4. Type the list of unwanted friend’s names in to input box of the section "Hide this from”.   • How often are comments used in XML documents?

    I'm currently developing a web-based XML managing program for a client (though I may 'market' it for future clients). Currently, it reads an XML document, converts it into manageable Javascript objects, and ultimately spits out indented, easy to read XML code. Edit: The program would be used by clients that don't feel like learning XML to add items or tags, but I (or another XML developer) may use the raw data for quick changes without using an editor. I feel like fundamentally, its ready for release, but I'm wondering if I should go the extra mile and allow support for remembering (and perhaps making) comments before generating the resulting XML. Considering that these XML files will probably never be read without a program interpreting it, should I really bother adding support for comments? I'll probably be the only one looking at raw files, and I usually don't use comments for XML anyway. So, are comments common/important in most XML documents?

First, you need to get an access token that your windows service or app can permanently use. To do this, go to https://graph.facebook.com/[YourUserId]/accounts?access_token=[AccessTokenFromAbove] You can find your user id in the URL when you click on your profile image.     Is there a definitive guide to writing code comments, aimed at budding developers? Ideally, it would cover when comments should (and should not) be used, and what comments should contain. This answer: Do not comment WHAT you are doing, but WHY you are doing it. The WHAT is taken care of by clean, readable and simple code with proper choice of variable names to support it. Comments show a higher level structure to the code that can't be (or is hard to) show by the code itself. comes close, but it's a little concise for inexperienced programmers (an expansion on that with several examples and corner cases would be excellent, I think).

    I was able to use facebook chat with an external application using the following information: First, find your Facebook username by going to http://www.facebook.com/your_user/. Next, Open iChat, then select iChat » Preferences and click on the Accounts tab. Click on the + (plus) sign to add a new account, with these settings: * Account Type is Jabber Account * Account name is your_user@chat.facebook.com, and enter your password * Click the drop-down arrow to reveal Server options. Enter chat.facebook.com as the server name. * Enter 5222 as the port and click Done. Click Done again, and you are good to go. From reading this, it seems that it might be possible to telnet into facebook chat. I tried, but wasn't able to. Is it possible? How?

I am trying to use django.contrib.comments, I saw the table in the database like this, but how can I integrate it with user_id, user_photos, user_name, user_email....and those things with the django commenting system? I also tried to use thread-comments, but I can't configure it properly, is the django threadedcomments table similar to following ? Please let me know if any of you have done this before....all I need is a user login, and post comments, and then show list of comments with users' profile photos and username, as well as there comments.   • Facebook Graph API - authorization types?

    I'm struggling with the new Facebook Graph API, perhaps someone here can help. Here is what I want to do: provide a ‘login w/ FB’ button, throw to /authorize, get a code, throw to /access_token, get an access_token, and be able to hit https://graph.facebook.com/me for info about the user. When I try to use type=client_cred in the /authorize call, I get an access_token that lets me hit URLs with userIDs or names, but not /me. I receive an error stating I need a valid token. If I can't hit /me, how do I figure out who the current user is? What exactly should I use in the type param if I want a website to access a users data? I've seen posts with type=web_server, etc, but I can't seem to find a sure fire way to do, what I think, is pretty simple... Thanks ahead of time for any help thats provided...

  • Facebook friends.getLists failing

    Hi all, I'm trying a simple request on Facebook to return all my friend lists. I'm trying this in Facebook's test console, as well as through an iPhone app i'm working on. friends.getLists (also alternatively through FQL) SELECT flid, name FROM friendlist WHERE owner=4810796 I am currently logged in, so using that number should be valid. Both are returning an empty list (not erroring out), but I am certain that I have a few friend lists set up. I've also tried using this with a test account I set up, but got the same results. I could have sworn this command was working earlier. Can anyone please either verify or reject that this is happening for them? Thanks.

  • Facebook graph api - delete like

    Hi there, I'm developing an app for Facebook in PHP, part of which lists the user's "likes". I would like to add a link next to each like so that the user can manage their likes by deleting them where they see fit. Facebook mentions this in their graph api docs: "You can delete a like by issuing a DELETE request to /POST_ID/likes (since likes don't have an ID)." But each like must have an id - how else would you delete it? Has anyone done this before, any help will be appreciated.

    Is it possible to use the Facebook iOS SDK Share Dialog to share on a Friend's Wall? I know that it is possible to do this using the Feed Dialog, but that provides the user with a less than optimal experience, and seems to be discouraged by Facebook. It would be fantastic if we could configure the Share Dialog to share with one particular friend. Additionally, is there a way to share with a friend privately (such that it would be sent to Messages)? I have researched pretty extensively and it seems like there is not a way to do either of these things using the iOS SDK - I would just like to confirm that I am not missing something.

  • Are XML Comments Necessary Documentation?

    I used to be a fan of requiring XML comments for documentation. I've since changed my mind for two main reasons: Like good code, methods should be self-explanatory. In practice, most XML comments are useless noise that provide no additional value. Many times we simply use GhostDoc to generate generic comments, and this is what I mean by useless noise: /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the unit of measure. /// </summary> /// <value> /// The unit of measure. /// </value> public string UnitOfMeasure { get; set; } To me, that's obvious. Having said that, if there were special instructions to include, then we should absolutely use XML comments. I like this excerpt from this article: Sometimes, you will need to write comments. But, it should be the exception not the rule. Comments should only be used when they are expressing something that cannot be expressed in code. If you want to write elegant code, strive to eliminate comments and instead write self-documenting code. Am I wrong to think we should only be using XML comments when the code isn't enough to explain itself on its own? I believe this is a good example where XML comments make pretty code look ugly.   • Can't checkin to Facebook Places by post to api?

    Hey everybody, I am trying to build an app where I let my registered user be able to check in to places on Facebook Places. I however for some reason can't seem to make this work.     Hi there, I'm using this code to implement the like button <fb:like layout="button_count" show_faces="false" width="450"></fb:like> But when I try to click it the counter is increased for about 1 second and then it goes back to zero again. I can't see on my facebook profile that i've liked something either. Someone have a solution for this? I'm using the newest JavaScript SDk in an Google App engine/ Django environment.

  • Facebook connect - api_client->users_getInfo throws error Cannot use string offset as an array

    Hey guys I have this piece of code which works 90% of the time: $user_details=$fb-api_client-users_getInfo($fb_user, array('last_name','first_name','proxied_email')); $firstName=$user_details[0]['first_name']; But sometimes I get this error: Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array for line $firstName=$user_details[0]['first_name']; I have read several people report the same issue - but I'm still not clear as to what is the reason - Am I getting this error because facebook is not returning any results or am I getting because it is returning only a single array instead of array of arrays. This is the fix I'm thinking of: if (!is_array($user_details)) { $firstName=''; } else { $firstName = ($user_details[0]) ? $user_details[0]['first_name'] : $user_details['first_name']; } Also if I'm not getting the name - is it because of a timeout issue or something else?   • Facebook Connect: proxied_email not always returned by users_getInfo

    Today I realized that FB Connect does not return the proxied_email field in about 4 out of 5 times. (I can reproduce this with a single users repeatedly, so this obviously does not have anything to do with privacy options or permissions) It definitely worked fine last week ago. I could not find any official info that this field is going to be removed or anything, so... Does anybody else have this problem? Is there anything I am doing wrong that could be causing this behavior? Or is Facebook just having a bad day?
