• How Transport for London Website Works

- by Subhen
Hi, Here let me clarify , I have no intentions to peep in to or any evil intention towards tfls database and other related information. But , ofcourse Millions of users are greatly beniftted the way it serves the information. http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/ So , If we want to create some site like tfl, journeyplanner , what are the basic things we need to keep in mind. Which Architecture We should use? Can We create this website using ASP.NET(Should be able to)? Is TFL integrating it's website with google maps or any other GPS Edit: While you enter the Zip/Pin code or Station name , it creates a map automatically from source to destination and calcculates the distance also. My Question here is , How do they calculate the distance , do they keep help of Maps or GPS or they created there own webservic?

• Deck from London UG 20110616 - Building a Reporting Brick capable of 1.2GBytes/sec and 80K IOs/sec for less than £2K

- by tonyrogerson
The Reporting Brick concept is not really anything new, it starts the walk toward bringing the work Jim Gray and Tom Barclay et al did on CyberBricks up-to-date in terms of current kit. A reporting brick is simply a box built from commodity kit utilising commodity SSD, namely the OCZ IBIS drives to gain extremely high levels of performance for a fraction of the cost required for typical server and san installs today. I'll write up over the next few months as I work further on the concept, for now the deck attached summarises some of the ideas around it, the deck was presented at last nights London SQL Server User Group, I will be presenting it again in Edinburgh on the 29th June and other locations later in the year. • How do I stop and repair a RAID 5 array that has failed and has I/O pending?

- by Ben Hymers
The short version: I have a failed RAID 5 array which has a bunch of processes hung waiting on I/O operations on it; how can I recover from this? The long version: Yesterday I noticed Samba access was being very sporadic; accessing the server's shares from Windows would randomly lock up explorer completely after clicking on one or two directories. I assumed it was Windows being a pain and left it. Today the problem is the same, so I did a little digging; the first thing I noticed was that running ps aux | grep smbd gives a lot of lines like this: ben 969 0.0 0.2 96088 4128 ? D 18:21 0:00 smbd -F root 1708 0.0 0.2 93468 4748 ? Ss 18:44 0:00 smbd -F root 1711 0.0 0.0 93468 1364 ? S 18:44 0:00 smbd -F ben 3148 0.0 0.2 96052 4160 ? D Mar07 0:00 smbd -F ... There are a lot of processes stuck in the "D" state. Running ps aux | grep " D" shows up some other processes including my nightly backup script, all of which need to access the volume mounted on my RAID array at some point. After some googling, I found that it might be down to the RAID array failing, so I checked /proc/mdstat, which shows this: ben@jack:~$ cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md0 : active raid5 sdb1[3](F) sdc1[1] sdd1[2] 2930271872 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/2] [_UU] unused devices: <none> And running mdadm --detail /dev/md0 gives this: ben@jack:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md0 /dev/md0: Version : 00.90 Creation Time : Sat Oct 31 20:53:10 2009 Raid Level : raid5 Array Size : 2930271872 (2794.53 GiB 3000.60 GB) Used Dev Size : 1465135936 (1397.26 GiB 1500.30 GB) Raid Devices : 3 Total Devices : 3 Preferred Minor : 0 Persistence : Superblock is persistent Update Time : Mon Mar 7 03:06:35 2011 State : active, degraded Active Devices : 2 Working Devices : 2 Failed Devices : 1 Spare Devices : 0 Layout : left-symmetric Chunk Size : 64K UUID : f114711a:c770de54:c8276759:b34deaa0 Events : 0.208245 Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 3 8 17 0 faulty spare rebuilding /dev/sdb1 1 8 33 1 active sync /dev/sdc1 2 8 49 2 active sync /dev/sdd1 I believe this says that sdb1 has failed, and so the array is running with two drives out of three 'up'. Some advice I found said to check /var/log/messages for notices of failures, and sure enough there are plenty: ben@jack:~$ grep sdb /var/log/messages ... Mar 7 03:06:35 jack kernel: [4525155.384937] md/raid:md0: read error NOT corrected!! (sector 400644912 on sdb1). I cannot hot-swap a replacement drive in, and don't want to leave the array running in a degraded state. I believe I am supposed to unmount the filesystem before stopping the array, but that is failing, and that is where I'm stuck now: ben@jack:~$ sudo umount /storage umount: /storage: device is busy. (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1)) It is indeed busy; there are some 30 or 40 processes waiting on I/O. What should I do? Should I kill all these processes and try again? Is that a wise move when they are 'uninterruptable'? What would happen if I tried to reboot? Please let me know what you think I should do. And please ask if you need any extra information to diagnose the problem or to help!

• ssh without password does not work for some users

- by joshxdr
I have a new RHEL4 Linux box that I am using to copy data to old Solaris 2.6 and RHEL3 Linux boxes with scp. I have found that with the same setup, it works for some users but not for others. For user jane, this works fine: jane@host1$ ssh -v remhost debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /mnt/home/osborjo/.ssh/identity debug1: Offering public key: /mnt/home/osborjo/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277 debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). for user jack it does not: jack@host1 ssh -v remhost debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /mnt/home/oper1/.ssh/identity debug1: Offering public key: /mnt/home/oper1/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive I have looked at the permissions for all the keys and files, they look the same. Since I am using home directories mounted by NFS, the keys for both the remote host and the local host are in the same directory. This is how things look for jane: jane@host1$ ls -l $HOME/.ssh -rw-rw-r-- 1 jane operator 394 Jan 27 16:28 authorized_keys -rw------- 1 jane operator 1675 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa -rw-r--r-- 1 jane operator 394 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa.pub -rw-rw-r-- 1 jane operator 1205 Jan 27 16:46 known_hosts For user jack: jack@host1$ ls -l $HOME/.ssh -rw-rw-r-- 1 jack engineer 394 Jan 27 16:28 authorized_keys -rw------- 1 jack engineer 1675 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa -rw-r--r-- 1 jack engineer 394 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa.pub -rw-rw-r-- 1 jack engineer 1205 Jan 27 16:46 known_hosts As a last ditch effort, I copied the authorized_keys, id_rsa, and id_rsa.pub from jill to jack, and changed the username in authorized_keys and id_rsa.pub with vi. It still did not work. It seems there is something different between the two users but I cannot figure out what it is.

• 11 Types of Developers

- by Lee Brandt
Jack Dawson Jack Dawson is the homeless drifter in Titanic. At one point in the movie he says, “I figure life’s a gift, and I don’t intend on wasting it.” He is happy to wander wherever life takes him. He works himself from place to place, making just enough money to make it to his next adventure. The “Jack Dawson” developer clings on to any new technology as the ‘next big thing’, and will find ways to shoe-horn it in to places where it is not a fit. He is very appealing to the other developers because they want to try the newest techniques and tools too, He will only stay until the new technology either bores him or becomes problematic. Jack will also be hard to find once the technology has been implemented, because he will be on to the next shiny thing. However, having a Jack Dawson on your team can be beneficial. Jack can be a great ally when attempting to convince a stodgy, corporate entity to upgrade. Jack usually has an encyclopedic recall of all the new features of the technology upgrade and is more than happy to interject them in any conversation. Tom Smykowski Tom is the neurotic employee in Office Space, and is deathly afraid of being fired. He will do only what is necessary to keep the status quo. He believes as long as nothing changes, his job is safe. He will scoff at anything new and be the naysayer during any change initiative. Tom can be useful in off-setting Jack Dawson. Jack will constantly be pushing for change and Tom will constantly be fighting it. When you see that Jack is getting kind of bored with a new technology and Tom has finally stopped wetting himself at the mere mention of it, then it is probably the sweet spot of beginning to implement that new technology (providing it is the right tool for the job). Ray Consella Ray is the guy who built the Field of Dreams. He took a risk. Sometimes he screwed it up, but he knew he didn’t want to end up regretting not attempting it. He constantly doubted himself, but he knew he had to keep going. Granted, he was doing what the voices in his head were telling him to do, but my point is he was driven to do something that most people considered crazy. Even when his friends, his wife and even he told himself he was crazy, somewhere inside himself, he knew it was the right thing to do. These are the innovators. These are the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs of the world. The take risks, they fail, they learn and the get better. Obviously, this kind of person thrives in start-ups and smaller companies, but that is due to their natural aversion to bureaucracy. They want to see their ideas put into motion quickly, and withdrawn quickly if it doesn’t work. Short feedback cycles are essential to Ray. He wants to know if his idea is working or not. He wants to modify or reverse his idea if it is not working or makes things worse. These are the agilistas. May I always be one.

• As an IT contractor, is it better to be a specialist or a jack-of-all-trades? [on hold]

- by alimac83
I've just entered the contracting market as a web developer and I've having a tough time figuring out how to plan for the future. Several developers I've worked with in the past have told me to become a specialist in one technology/area in order to secure the big contracts. However I've also heard from other sources that it's better to spread your expertise so that you're not limited in the types of work you can go for. Personally I've pretty much been involved in both back and front-end technologies during the course of my career, with slight variations in the weighting of each depending on the job. I don't really have a favourite - I enjoy it all. My question is mainly to the experienced contractors though: Do you feel specialising has helped your career or is it better to know a bit of everything? Thanks

• Is there a way to make the speaker silent while the headphone-jack keeps working? 12.04LTS

- by Cees
The PC I am working on is in a loud environment. If I need sound, I use the headphone. On my own account this is easy: I mute the speaker in the sound-setting. I am not the only user, others use the Guest-session. And that's what this question about: Is it possible to turn off the speaker by default on a guest-session AND leave the headphone-output working? If yes, how can I fix it? I tried to loosen the speaker (hardware) connection but it is soldered to the mainboard. The soundcard on the PC is: HDA Intel at 0xfea78000 irq 44 /proc/asound/pcm ---------------------------+ ¦00-00: ALC662 rev1 Analog : ALC662 rev1 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1¦ ¦00-02: ALC662 rev1 Analog : ALC662 rev1 Analog : capture 1 Ubuntu 12.04LTS is running on the system, my account has all the (admin) rights

• How can I correlate a wall jack to a user/machine on the domain?

- by harryfino
After reading Valve's new employee handbook, I was really interested in setting up a company map like they described on page 6: "The fact that everyone is always moving around within the company makes people hard to find. That’s why we have http://user — check it out. We know where you are based on where your machine is plugged in, so use this site to see a map of where everyone is right now." What I'm trying to figure out is: how I can tell which machine or domain user (either will do) is connected to a particular wall jack?

• Save the dates – Tech.Days 2011 23rd to 25th of May in London

- by Eric Nelson
In May Microsoft UK (and specifically my group) will be delivering Tech.Days – a week of day long technical events plus evening activities. We will be covering Windows Phone 7, Silverlight, IE 9, Windows Azure Platform and more. I’m working right now on the details of what we will be covering around the Windows Azure Platform – and it is shaping up very nicely. There is a little more detail over on TechNet – but for the moment, keep the dates clear if you can. P.S. I think the above is called a “teaser” in marketing speak.

• backlink anchor text / keyword stratergy post penguin

- by sam
Ive heard allot recently about over optimisation regarding backlink anchor text ofsite. What ive heard from seomoz was sites most effected by the penguin update had over 60% of their backlinks anchor text the same, so google saw this is unnatural and penalized them. Which kind of makes sense as its not normal to have such high density on one word / phrase. If i where building links for a gastro pub in london. (this is purely hypothetical). The sort of keywords i would go after are "gastro pub in london" and "london gastro pub" If i where to mix up the anchor text by having: gastro pub gastro pub in london london gastro pub would this be seen as ok ? or would these all be seen as broad match keywords and counted as one phrase, making me fall foul of the penguin update ?

• How to reliably synchronise file servers between London and Shanghai?

- by Andy S
We have two offices, one in London and one in Shanghai, each needing to be able to access the same set of files. This means we need a solid, speedy means of synchronising a set of folders between servers at either office. They're likely to be Windows servers, but we could look at Linux boxes if the software side makes more sense on *nix. We've considered Rsync, Unison, Gluster, and a few other options, but none of them seem capable of reliably keeping the servers in sync between such distant office locations. Each office is on DSL connectivity over the open internet, so encryption is also a factor. Does anyone have any hints for getting the servers synchronising in as close to real time as possible, without dying constantly? Andy

Customers: cust_id, cust_name, cust_notes Orders: order_id, cust_id, order_comments So, if I do a standard join to get all customers and their orders via PHP, I return something like: Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 1st order Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 2nd order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 1st order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 2nd order The problem is that *cust_notes* is a text field and can be quite large (a couple of thousand words). So, it seems like returning that field for every order is inneficient. I could use *GROUP_CONCAT* and JOINS to return all *order_comments* on a single row BUT order_comments is a large text field too, so it seems like that could create a problem. Should I just use two separate queries, one for the customers table and one for the orders table? Is there a better way?

• Final ever Virtualisation for Developer slidedeck from NxtGenUG Cambridge

- by Liam Westley
Thanks to Chris Hay, Allister Frost and the guys from NxtGenUG Cambridge for hosting an evening of virtualisation, and for their secretary Rachel Hawley for sorting out all the dates and details ;-). It was a good turnout so close to Christmas, obviously the bribe of home made mince pies got some people out on a cold wintery December evening. Big thanks to Allister for driving me to the railway station to ensure I made the 22:29 train, made all the easier by quaffing a couple of very well kept pints of Adnams Broadside in The Punter after the presentation. For those who want the last ever slide decks, they're available here in PDF and PowerPoint format, http://www.tigernews.co.uk/blog-twickers/nxtgenugcambs/Virt4DevsPdf.zip http://www.tigernews.co.uk/blog-twickers/nxtgenugcambs/Virt4DevsPowerPoint.zip And a final thanks to all the user groups who have hosted a Virtualisation or Hyper-V talk in the past two years, and gave me a chance to enthuse developers about virtualisation, Dot Net Developers Network, Bristol * (http://www.dotnetdevnet.com/) DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper 7, Reading (DDD7) NxtGenUG, Oxford * (http://www.nxtgenug.net/Region.aspx?RegionID=3) NxtGenUG, Birmingham (http://www.nxtgenug.net/Region.aspx?RegionID=2) DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper Scotland 2, Glasgow (2011 event details) DevEvening, Woking (http://www.devevening.co.uk/) VistaSquad, London (R.I.P. 2010) NxtGenUG, Southampton (http://www.nxtgenug.net/Region.aspx?RegionID=9) GL.Net, Gloucester (http://www.gl-net.org.uk/) NxtGenUG, Manchester (http://www.nxtgenug.net/Region.aspx?RegionID=11) London .NET User Group, London (http://www.dnug.org.uk/) VBUG, Bracknell (http://www.vbug.co.uk/events/default.aspx?region=Reading) NEBytes, Newcastle Upon Tyne (http://www.nebytes.net/) VBUG, London (http://www.vbug.co.uk/events/default.aspx?region=London) NxtGenUG, Hereford (http://www.nxtgenug.net/Region.aspx?RegionID=10) NxtGenUG, Cambridge (http://www.nxtgenug.net/Region.aspx?RegionID=8) * twice, for both Virtualisation for Developers and Hyper-V for Developers Virtualisation for Developers 2008 - 2010 R.I.P.
