  • I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

    - by jgamer578
Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back. Thanks for reading and any help in advance, Jacob.

  • How do I lower idle cpu usage in ubuntu linux? Gnome or KDE Variants

    - by Jasen
My question comes from a kde desktop currently, but it also happens with the gnome instance. When just sitting there, with only the cpu monitor widget running. no open windows, no background processes other than the desktop, my cpu is at ~20%. I wanna know how to fix this, and possibly get better performance out of it. When running my windows side, the cpu will sit at zero, and i generally load new programs about 400ms faster. With windows 7 being as slow as it is, this is not acceptable. and the widget is only set to check every 500ms, so im almost completely sure its not the widget. My system is a Gateway nv 53 amd 2.0 ghz turion with 4 gb of installed ram, and 500 gb hd. both linux and windows are 64 bit. average ram use on either system is about 1.4 gb for just the os

  • rpm file conflict after alien conversion

    - by Zitrax
I have a program for which I generate a .deb file. The .deb file works fine on the systems I have tried it on (also tested with lintian). Previously it has worked to use alien to convert this to .rpm and install it on Suse. However it is now about a year since I tried it the last time and now I get an error when trying to install the alien made rpm on Fedora 11, I get this error: file /usr/share/icons/default.kde from install of testpkg-0.2-2.i386 conflicts with file from package kdelibs3-3.5.10-13.fc11.1.i586 Listing the content of the rpm file: $ rpm -qlp testpkg-0.2-2.i386.rpm / /usr /usr/games /usr/games/testpkg /usr/lib /usr/lib/libfmod-3.75.so /usr/share /usr/share/app-install /usr/share/app-install/icons /usr/share/app-install/icons/testpkg.png /usr/share/applications /usr/share/applications/testpkg.desktop /usr/share/doc /usr/share/doc/testpkg /usr/share/doc/testpkg/changelog.gz /usr/share/doc/testpkg/copyright /usr/share/games /usr/share/games/testpkg /usr/share/games/testpkg/images /usr/share/games/testpkg/images/bb.dat /usr/share/games/testpkg/images/bb_bg.dat /usr/share/games/testpkg/images/bubblemad_8x8.png /usr/share/games/testpkg/images/goldfont.png /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl001.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl002.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl003.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl004.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl005.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl006.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/lvl/lvl007.txt /usr/share/games/testpkg/music /usr/share/games/testpkg/music/alfa.it /usr/share/games/testpkg/music/beta.it /usr/share/games/testpkg/sounds /usr/share/games/testpkg/sounds/bounce.wav /usr/share/games/testpkg/sounds/click.wav /usr/share/games/testpkg/sounds/warning.wav /usr/share/icons /usr/share/icons/default.kde /usr/share/icons/default.kde/16x16 /usr/share/icons/default.kde/16x16/apps /usr/share/icons/default.kde/16x16/apps/testpkg.png /usr/share/man /usr/share/man/man6 /usr/share/man/man6/testpkg.6.gz Am I wrong in putting the kde icons in /usr/share/icons/default.kde which seem to be a symbolic link ? It's a symbolic link on both Kubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 11 though. Sounds like a common situation that the same directory is needed for different packages, so why is it a conflict ?

  • Cannot set up dual monitors correctly in Fedora15 with KDE.

    - by adivasile
I have 2 monitors: 24" LCD connected via DVI(primary) 19" LCD connected via VGA(secondary) Everytime Fedora starts the second display is always set to clone the first one and they both run at 1280x1024 and I always have to disable the 19" monitor, in order for the bigger one to run at 1920x1080. I want to set them up so that my secondary monitor extends the primary one.The problem is that no matter what kind of configuration I choose it has no effect. My secondary monitor remains disabled. I've tried using both the Display manager from KDE and the ATI Control Panel and the behaviour is always the same. The moment I click apply, the screen flickers and nothing changes. I've succesfully used the extended setup in Fedora15 with Gnome3. I have a RadeonHD 4300 series videocard and I'm using the drivers downloaded from the AMD site. This is the output of xrandr -q : Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1920 VGA-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1280x960 60.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.0 70.1 66.0 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x480 75.0 72.8 66.7 59.9 720x400 70.1 DVI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 477mm x 268mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 60.0 1680x1050 59.9 1600x900 60.0 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1280x960 60.0 1152x864 75.0 1280x720 60.0 1152x720 60.0 1024x768 75.0 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 75.0 60.3 640x480 75.0 59.9 720x400 70.1 Later edit: The problem seems to come from the ATI drivers.I managed to set up the monitors like I wanted after I uninstalled the drivers. Unfortunately I'm working on an OpenCL project so I had to reinstall them. The moment I did that, all my previous settings were forgotten and I was back to square one.

  • How can I run Gnome or KDE locally in Cygwin?

    - by John Peter Thompson Garcés
Apparently it is possible to do this using cygwin ports, as can be seen in screenshots. I followed this how-to to get apt-cygports set up, and I used it to install gnome-session. This how-to supposedly gives the commands needed to run Gnome or KDE, but whenever I try to run Gnome, a blank X-window pops up and then quickly disappears. Here is the terminal output: $ startx /usr/bin/dbus-launch gnome-session xauth: file /home/jpthomps/.serverauth.4168 does not exist Welcome to the XWin X Server Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project Release: 1.10.3.0 OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 [Windows NT 6.1 build 7601] (WoW64) Package: version 1.10.3-12 built 2011-08-22 XWin was started with the following command line: /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /home/jpthomps/.serverauth.4168 (II) xorg.conf is not supported (II) See http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html for more information LoadPreferences: /home/jpthomps/.XWinrc not found LoadPreferences: Loading /etc/X11/system.XWinrc LoadPreferences: Done parsing the configuration file... winDetectSupportedEngines - DirectDraw installed, allowing ShadowDD winDetectSupportedEngines - Windows NT, allowing PrimaryDD winDetectSupportedEngines - DirectDraw4 installed, allowing ShadowDDNL winDetectSupportedEngines - Returning, supported engines 0000001f winSetEngine - Using Shadow DirectDraw NonLocking winScreenInit - Using Windows display depth of 32 bits per pixel winFinishScreenInitFB - Masks: 00ff0000 0000ff00 000000ff Screen 0 added at virtual desktop coordinate (0,0). • Is it possible to use multiple desktop environments on same system?

    - by Kshitiz Sharma
I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I want to try out KDE and other desktop environments. But I'm not sure if I'll like them enough to switch permanently. I want to be safe and make a transition in a piecemeal fashion. Is it possible to install KDE on Ubuntu and yet not do away with the default Unity shell? Could I install multiple desktop environments and switch between them by tweaking some startup configuration and then rebooting?

  • keyboard mappings are totally screwed after updating to kde4

    - by zeonglow
I recently upgraded from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4, and I have been having weird issues with my keyboard. In one of the virtual consoles e.g. when I press ctrl + alt 1 , I can type perfectly, but in KDE, several of the number keys don't work, the left and right arrows don't work either. When I press the right arrow key in xev I get this: KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x3600001, root 0x6f, subw 0x0, time 903459, (111,55), root:(115,836), state 0x10, keycode 114 (keysym 0x1008ff11, XF86AudioLowerVolume), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False When I press the '3' key it toggles my Bookmarks toolbar in Firefox, in xev I get this: KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x3600001, root 0x6f, subw 0x0, time 999968, (94,115), root:(98,896), state 0x10, keycode 12 (keysym 0x1008ff30, XF86Favorites), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x3600001, root 0x6f, subw 0x0, time 1000032, (94,115), root:(98,896), state 0x10, keycode 12 (keysym 0x1008ff30, XF86Favorites), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False As this is deeper down, changing the type of keyboard in the KDE meun's has no effect. I'm slowly beginning to wade through the mountains of documentation about the X keyboard model, but there has to be a better way. Does anyone no what it is? Edit: 1234567890 ! after deleting the entire .kde folder. but only until I change the Keyboard settings from the "system settings" applet, then its hosed full time. Regardless of what I set the settings too. (restore to default settings doesn't) 2nd Edit: I'm using Gentoo AMD64, I was upgrading from KDE 3.5 KDE 4.2. I think I had manual settings before, although I didn't change anything. I was originally running KDE without HAL until that stop working a year or so ago. The only customisation I made was to set the multimedia keys to control Amarok. 3rd Edit $ grep xkb /var/log/Xorg.0.log (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev" (**) Option "xkb_model" "evdev" (**) Option "xkb_layout" "us" (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev" (**) Option "xkb_model" "evdev" (**) Option "xkb_layout" "us" Xorg.0.log has this to say: (WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled. • Mono/C#: A good GUI toolkit ? looks good on KDE?

    - by Martin
Hi there, i am trying to get into developing for linux and i am a .net developer so i decided to give Mono a try. THe problem is that i am having problems trying to find a good gui toolkit. I have chosen KDE over GNOME because its a little bit more pleasing on the eye. I have looked here http://www.mono-project.com/Gui_Toolkits I get the sense GTK# is a good toolkit but its for GNOME. I know you can still run GNOME apps on KDE - but do they look nice ? probably not?? I would really appreciated any feedbakc from anyone who is doing the same or has done the same. I don't want to end up choosing the wrong toolkit and then have to change half way trhough. Also i was hoping to do all my development on my Windows PC and then just pass it to linux when i am ready... I presume this is possible? Thanks in advance

  • Menubar hidden in all KDE apps

    - by Francesco Feltrinelli
I am using Kubuntu 10.10 with Plasma-Netbook on my netbook. Somehow I messed up with window's settings and now the menubar (the one on top of the window, just below the titlebar, which has the File button, Edit, Settings, Help, ...) is hidden from all my KDE applications. Here you can see how the menubar should be correctly displayed: Here you can see how it is actually displayed on my netbook: I don't remember what I did to hide the menubar, I clicked somewhere in the context menu which shows right-clicking on window title, but I cannot find that setting anymore. Can you please help me? Thank you very much.

When i search for kubuntu-desktop in synaptic then the download file shows nearly 4MB but i clearly remember the actual size was near 100 mb. Just for information both are already installed in my laptop. So the question is - How to download the actuall 100 mb KUbuNTU-DESKTOP so that i can just, without any hesitation install it in offline computer which is using ubuntu 12.04. Same for the GNOME 3. • Gtk theme change doesn't apply to kde apps?

    - by Stefan Monov
I changed the systemwide ambiance theme a bit (specifically the scrollbar css), and this works fine in gtk apps, but in kde apps nothing has changed. They still have the vanilla ambiance look. I tried rebooting too. Btw I've disabled overlay scrollbars. I looked at this question: Why don't Qt4 apps in Lubuntu pick up the GTK theme? and tried setting the Gtk+ theme in qtconfig but that didn't help. The look remains the same. Changing the theme in qtconfig to another one, such as QtCurve, does have an effect though.

  • Add autorandr before kdm starts

    - by Serge Tarkovski
I want to add autorandr before kdm starts. Autorandr works well within KDE, however, in kdm I still have ugly 1024x768 resolution when my external monitor is connected. I tried adding autorandr --change to /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup: #! /bin/sh # Xsetup - run as root before the login dialog appears #xconsole -geometry 480x130-0-0 -notify -verbose -fn fixed -exitOnFail -file /dev/xconsole & /sbin/initctl -q emit login-session-start DISPLAY_MANAGER=kdm /usr/local/bin/autorandr --change >> /tmp/autorandr echo "Xsetup finished" >> /tmp/xsetup-finished A debug message in /tmp/xsetup-finished appears correctly. /tmp/autorandr is empty (so it seems autorandr runs without errors). I also tried to move autorandr --change line before /sbin/initctl -q emit login-session-start DISPLAY_MANAGER=kdm with no effect. P.S. Of course, autorandr profiles I created under KDE session, are in my home folder, but Xsetup script runs under root, so I created a symlink from my ~/.autorandr to /root/.autorandr.

  • kubuntu wallpaper settings disappear

    - by Jess H. Brewer
To render my system useable after upgrading to 11.10, I had to abandon gnome and install the KDE window manager. This is mostly fine, but the desktop wallpaper slideshow works for a few minutes and then gets reset to the default (fixed kubuntu splash background). I can start up the slideshow again by right-clicking on the background and re-entering all the Desktop Settings, but then it just disappears again after a while. What could be causing this? Oops!   What I failed to realize was that KDE apparently uses an independent wallpaper setting for each desktop. I have 12, so some were set to the slideshow but others were still set to the default. Being accustomed to one common wallpaper setting for all desktops, I misinterpreted this as a global reset. Sorry!

  • Kernel freezes with nvidia optimus and bumblebee on 12.04

    - by piovisqui
I have a Sony VAIO with Intel i7-3520M and NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 640M LE]. I installed bumblebee and nvidia drivers. They work almost fine, but the system freezes like in a kernel panic once every day. I can play Dota 2 with primusrun on it with 20-30fps 1080p. But when I do something simple as expanding the KDE calendar widget from the bottom right corner, the system hangs a lot and windows borders get another border. The system freezes in not very intensive graphic tasks, for instance, ALT+TAB with KWin effects or pressing ALT+F2 for poping up the launcher. How can I solve this? Info: I use KDE. Couldn't paste de logs here, check at pastebin: http://pastebin.com/SBet8fRQ

  • Prevent shutdown when rsnapshot is running

    - by highsciguy
Since shutdowns during rsnapshot operation will lead to inconsistent/partial backups, I wonder how to delay the system shutdown while rsnapshot is active. The task is complicated by the fact that I need a solution which is compatible with non-expert users. I.e. I need to tell reliably to the user that he needs to wait until the process is finished and not to do a hard reset. Once this is the case shutdown should continue. A possible solution could be to replace the action of the window managers (mostly KDE) shutdown/restart/hibernate buttons by a script which first checks if rsync is active and shows a message if this is the case. But I do not know if this is possible in KDE.
