• Typing lag in WinXP

  I'm working on a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop that has a mysterious lag in typing. You enter keystrokes and it takes a while to show up on the screen. WinXP Pro was freshly installed and the behavior is still here. Here is the weird part... I've tested the computer with the full Dell diagnostic suite, Prime95 (using UBCD4Win), and Memtest86. Everything checks out as fine. If I run a LiveCD such as UBCD4Win or Ubuntu (9.04?) then there is no typing issue. This is causing me lots of aggravation. Thoughts?

• Disable laptop screen

  I recently had the display fail on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. I currently have my TV hooked up to the laptop's S-Video out which works fine as long as I'm running in Windows. For the first minute or so when the computer is booting I get no display. I was wondering if there was any way to disable the laptop screen entirely so that the TV display is active from the beginning (not just after Windows loads). I realize there may be a BIOS setting for this, my only problem is I can't see the BIOS settings screen since no display is active at that point so if anyone has any BIOS setting solutions I'd need the exact keystrokes to hit :)

• gVIM "put" driving me mad, how do I "put" at the beginning of a line

  I'm learning gVIM on Windows, and as I slowly learn more of the keystrokes I find myself using the mouse less and less, which is great. I have a couple of questions I've yet to figure out: I do a lot of copy and paste. So I use 'v' to enter VISUAL mode, use k/j to move up/down and select the lines, then hit 'y' to yank. I then go to the line where I want to insert, and hit 'p' to put, BUT the darn thing pastes after the 1st character. I can't move any further left, so I am definitely at the start of the line, so I find the 'p'ut behaviour of pasting 1 char after my cursor position to be supremely annoying. I switch between edit and command mode an awful lot, and my poor little finger on my left hand is getting sore from being stretched out to hit the 'Esc' key (to enter command mode) every few seconds. Is there a more finger-friendly way to enter command mode?

• Nested RDP and ILO/VMWare console sessions, latency and keystroke repetition

  I'm working on a remote server installation entirely through ILO. Due to the software application and environment, my access is restricted to a Windows server that I must access through RDP. Going from that system to the target server is accomplished via HP ILO2 or ILO3. I'm trying to run a CentOS installation in an environment where I can't use a kickstart. I'm doing this via text mode, but the keystrokes are repeating randomly and it's difficult to select the proper installation options. For example: ks=http://all.yourbase.org/kickstart/ks.cfg ends up looking like: ks====httttttp://allll..yourbaseee.....org/kicksstart/ks.cccfg I'm doing this using Microsoft's native RDP client (on Mac and Windows). I've also noticed this before when running installations or doing remote work in nested sessions. Same for typing into a VMWare console in some cases. Is there a nice fix for this, or it it simply a function of the protocol(s)?

• Remapping Home/End from PC to Mac Via Synergy is not client specific.

  This question asks about the end key but the answers give no examples: http://superuser.com/questions/60052/what-key-works-like-end-using-a-mac-with-synergy If they had, I am guessing that they would likely have run into this problem. Adding lines like the bottom two of this: section: options keystroke(End) = keystroke(Control+Right,myiMac) keystroke(Home) = keystroke(Control+Left,myiMac) to my synergy.sgc in MyDocuments on the winXP machine would work but causes the keys to stop functioning on the winXP machine. Unacceptable. I next tried a compromise: keystroke(End) = keystroke(Control+Right,myiMac); keystroke(End,myPc) keystroke(Home) = keystroke(Control+Left,myiMac); keystroke(Home,myPc) Expecting that to broadcast the keystrokes to both machines regardless of which one was the Active Screen. That and many other variations did not work. What am I doing wrong? Has someone actually done this?

• adding keyboard shortcuts for OSX terminal or xterm

  Is there a way to add a keyboard shortcut for a terminal command in OSX. Basically most of the times i open the terminal app in MAC in order to ssh into a certain server foo. What I want to do is add a keyboard shortcut (say ^k) so that on a terminal when I do that, it runs "ssh foo" in the terminal. Thanks PS: I think if there is something for the xterm in linux then it should work for the terminal too. So this might not be an OSX specific question. PS2: I want the shortcut to do carriage return with the "ssh foo". If its just "ssh foo", then I can write an alias in .bashrc. My goal is to minimize the number of keystrokes I've to do at the end of the day.

• Why can't the Adobe Flash player send key strokes it doesn't handle to the browse in which it is run

  I'm a heavy web user that uses the address bar constantly while browsing the web. I often use Ctrl + T to open a new tab or Ctrl + D to move focus to the address bar so it is very annoying that these shortcut keys do not work when a Flash object has focus on the active browser tab. I would happily give up all keyboard handling in the Flash Player in exchange for having keystrokes sent to the browser. In fact, as someone who has worked in software development for over 15 years it is hard to believe that Flash doesn't pass common browser shortcut keys to the browser or have an option to do so. So my question is this: Am I missing some option, some Flash shortcut key or some Firefox add-on that will alleviate my suffering?

• GNU screen configuration for optimal keycode recognition

  Currently GNU screen will botch up certain keystrokes, for example CTRL pressed in combination with the arrow keys, so that eg when in vim insert mode, CTRL-PGUp will Uppercase the next/current word (or something like that). I'd like for it to work pretty much transparently, so that the functionality is the same as when it's not running (with the obvious exception of CTRL-a control sequences)... is this possible? Also — and I suspect this is more or less a separate issue — I'd like for the scrollwheel to scroll back in the session log rather than cycling through the history as it does now. Doable? Or perhaps it could be set to emulate a much larger screen size that the terminal app that it's running under could keep that text in its session log. either way the goal would be to be able to use the mouse wheel and/or shift-up-arrow to scroll back in the session log.

• Does Juniper Networks provide keyloggers with their software?

  I noticed that I had a "USB Mass Storage Device" plugged in when there wasn't in fact anything plugged in to any USB port. I turned it off via Windows (XP), but it's quite concerning. This was after installing Juniper Networks' software for VPN access to an IT guy's stuff. I also notice there is a service called "dsNcService.exe" which apparently is sending information over the internet (even when I'm not in VPN access). The process restarts itself when I end it. Should I be worried that this software is tracking my keystrokes and broadcasting them to my IT guy?

• Need Recommendations: Network Software and Hardware Setup for small firm

  Will be starting a small graphics design firm soon, with 20 employees. Therefore need software to manage the network. Have bought a bulk license of Windows 7. I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III). If required I would purchase an extra machine, but would like to avoid unnecessary costs at start up. Following are the main functions that I would like to perform: Need to monitor\control network traffic and internet usage, restrict access to certain websites Alerts when access to certain software's, and when trying to tamper with privileges Ability to view desktops of any computer at any given time Limit access to certain hardware like USB ports,etc Limit access to folders on the computer Log/Report of all actions including keystrokes performed on any computer Local Network chat and talk client Collaboration and Work logs Any Software available to do all of the above and also any additional hardware required besides network switches, network card's and CAT5e cables. • Is there a way to see what is typed or websites visted when a spouse is using google chrome in incognito ?

  My spouse and I have 2 laptops both running windows 7 and I have 1 desktop running vista. I have reason to believe she is cheating and I want to watch her internet usage, She is always using google chrome in incognito mode. I have tried a few keyloggers but they never seem to be able to get the keystrokes when she is on google. I dont know if there is a way I can network them so they go thru my desktop then to the internet. We are using Brighthouse cable internet. any ideas would be great thank you

• Using PC or Mac keyboard as Bluetooth keyboard for iPad?

  I would like to use my computer keyboard (USB) as a Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad, while I am using it with my computer. I was hoping their was an "app for that" that I could run on either Mac or Windows. I imagine how it would work: It would have to emulate a Bluetooth keyboard, and be able to pair with the iPad. Then, when you give focus to this app, it transmits keystrokes from your built-in keyboard out over the Bluetooth connection. Seems simple, but I can't seem to find anything definitive on Google. Has anybody done this? I figure this is cheaper that buying a Apple iPad Keyboard Dock or a Apple Wireless Keyboard from the Apple Store. Also, it's one less item on my desk, which gets cluttered enough with one keyboard.

• Is there any way to get tree organisation for Windows 7 file explorer favorites?

  In XP there was a MenuBar called Favorites which seemed to be based on Internet Explorer Favorites. It was fantastic because it allowed for very fast tree style navigation (if set up correctly you could navigate it using first letter keystrokes, so to access a shortcut named "videos" in a folder named "files" was as quick as Alt-A f v) This was removed in Vista (and imo generally regressed the file explorer). This was fine because I never used it, but I'm resigned to eventually embracing the inevitability that is Windows 7. Dealing with a single non-nested list of favourites is pretty painful to me as I have quite a lot of them. Is there a way to make a tree like favorites structure in Windows 7? My fingers are crossed.

• Ubuntu Server login not recognizing the keyboard after entering username.

  I'm having similar issues with logging into ubuntu server. chief problem is that once I enter my user name & hit enter, I can't enter anything ffor my password - it won't accept any keystrokes until I press Ctrl+any key. Once I've pressed Ctrl+ any key, I'm able to type again, but have never been able to enter any more than 3 characters before the 60 sec time limit. This problem is present on fresh installs of both 10.04 & 9.10. Part of the problem is lkely to be my antique pc which is an old Emachines Trigems I850 based mbd and an equally ancient Nvidia 4x AGP video card. Initially I was going to install Ubuntu 10.10, but with ORCA running with both screen reader and full screen magnification crashed the system & smoked a stick of Rambus memory. Is there any fix to this problem? Jeff

• How to integrate Thunderbird with SpamAssassin running on the server?

  I'm trying to integrate SpamAssassin running on a server with Thunderbird. Basically I need to be able to select several emails in Thunderbird and send them back to SpamAssassin for training, either as spam or ham. I tried several approaches: Tried "Report Spam" plugin, which is able to send message back to server either as an email attachment or via HTTP post. However, the plugin is rather buggy... Does not support sending several messages at once, "report as ham" is not working at all, etc. Wanted to make a custom button that will copy selected messages to a separate IMAP folder (I could create "LearnAsSpam" and "LearnAsHam" folders in IMAP that will get processed automatically on server), but don't even know how to approach this in Thunderbird, don't want to learn Thunderbird extention authoring... Server-side, I'm prepared to do some custom programming or integration needed (can receive a message via HTTP / SMTP / whatever), my stumbling block is Thunderbird... So, how can I send emails from Thunderbird back to SpamAssassin running on email server for Bayesian training, with as few keystrokes as possible?

• what does it mean for MalwareBytes to find malicious registry keys but nothing else?

  I have a machine that is obviously infected, and when I ran MalwareBytes it told me that it found some "malicious" registry keys (surprisingly enough these contained file path to currently non-existent javascript files). But, that's it. Full scan did not uncover any malicious files, or malicious hidden processes in memory. Like, maybe the (hidden?) process that for whatever reason periodically injects keystrokes (hotkeys?) into whatever currently open window. Then on another, not obviously infected, machine it found a "malware.trace" registry key but again no files or processes etc. How does this jive with people's experience with MalwareBytes? Does it usually find registry key symptoms of an infection but nothing else? Or is it a common thing to have no infection but some malicious registry keys in place anyway?

• vim: sending tab-completion key against a mapped keystroke

  To switch between buffers without installing any plugins, a good way is to type :b <tab> Which shows all the current buffers names in status bar and you can pick one using cursor keys and enter. But :b <tab> is 5 keystrokes and I would like to map it to a <leader>. But setting the following is not working. :nnoremap <Leader>. :b <Tab> It shows ":b ^I" in status bar and doesn't actually open the buffer names on status bar. Anyone knows why?

• How can I tell what command is running on the remote end of an ssh connection?

  Tl;dr - how do I find the name of the command (eg $BASH_COMMAND) running on the remote end of an ssh connection? ... My example setup is two tmux vertical panes, LH pane runs a local vim session with vertical split, RH pane runs an ssh session running vim, again with a vertical split. Using tmux-navigator I can navigate from left to right over the first 3 vim buffers, but the 4th (far right hand one) is inaccessible. The reason for this is that tmux-navigator tests the value of 'pane_current_command' and compares it to 'vim' before deciding which keystrokes to dispatch. On the right hand tmux pane, the current command is 'ssh' and not 'vim'. What I want to do is test for (pane_current_command =~ 'ssh'), and if so, examine the command that is running on the far side of the connection? I cannot find a way to get hold of this, so any suggestions would be welcome? • Smart Auto-completion in SVN (and other programs!)

  When I type "svn add path/to/somefile..." and tab to autocomplete, the system should ONLY complete files/directories that are NOT under currently under SVN control. Likewise, when I commit, remove or resolve files, the tab completion should only complete files that are relevant to what I'm doing. This is especially important in SVN where I can waste thousands of keystrokes typing long path and file names, but it of applies to other programs. I know bash has a bash_completion file that can be used to programatically alter this behaviour but I've not found a decent example of SVN completion which actually completes file names rather than SVN command names. My question is: Does anyone have such a setup? Does anyone use a different shell or tool that does something similar? Has anyone given this any thought?

• Sony VAIO Broken Computer Screen automatically connect to external

  I have a SONY Vaio with a screen that's broken as in I only see white or black dots on the display. I would like to have it start automatically to the external, but my previous computer settings for an external display has it set on "extend" rather than "duplicate". Therefore, whenever I boot up, I have the extended screen on the external, which does me no good since I can't really do anything with my start bar still located on the broken screen. I hope that makes sense. Has anyone else run into this problem? I've seen some things about starting in BIOS. Will my broken computer screen still be able to display the contents when I'm in BIOS? How do I get there? or are there keystrokes for a Sony Vaio that will automatically let me duplicate screens or direct everything to the external? Thanks!

• Box Selection and Multi-Line Editing with VS 2010

I’ve already covered some of the code editor improvements in the VS 2010 release.  In particular, I’ve blogged about the Code Intellisense Improvements, new Code Searching and Navigating Features, HTML, ASP.NET and JavaScript Snippet Support, and improved JavaScript Intellisense.  Today’s blog post covers a small, but nice, editor improvement with VS 2010 – the ability to use “Box Selection” when performing multi-line editing.  This can eliminate keystrokes and enables some slick editing scenarios. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Box Selection Box selection is a feature that has been in Visual Studio for awhile (although not many people knew about it).  It allows you to select a rectangular region of text within the code editor by holding down the Alt key while selecting the text region with the mouse.  With VS 2008 you could then copy or delete the selected text. VS 2010 now enables several more capabilities with box selection including: Text Insertion: Typing with box selection now allows you to insert new text into every selected line Paste/Replace: You can now paste the contents of one box selection into another and have the content flow correctly Zero-Length Boxes: You can now make a vertical selection zero characters wide to create a multi-line insert point for new or copied text These capabilities can be very useful in a variety of scenarios.  Some example scenarios: change access modifiers (private->public), adding comments to multiple lines, setting fields, or grouping multiple statements together. • Kill your temp tables using keyboard shortcuts : SSMS

  Here’s a nifty little SSMS trick that my colleague Tom Hunter educated me on the other day and I thought it was worth sharing. If you’re a keyboard shortcut junkie then you’ll love it. How often when working with code in SSMS that contains temp tables do you see the following message: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 6, Line 78 There is already an object named '#table' in the database. Quite often I would imagine, it happens to me all the time! Usually I write a bit of code at the top of the query window that goes and drops the table if it exists but there’s a much easier way of dealing with it. Remember that temp tables disappear as soon as your sessions ends hence wouldn’t it be nice if there were a quick way of recycling (i.e. stopping and restarting) your session? Well turns out there is and all it takes is a sequence of 4 keystrokes: Bring up the context menu using that mythically-named button that usually sits 3 to the right of the space bar ‘C’ for “Connection” ‘H’ for “Change Connection…” ‘Enter’ to select the same connection you had open last time (screenshots below) Once you’ve done it a few times you’ll probably have the whole sequence down to less than a second. Such a simple little trick, I’m annoyed with myself for it not occurring to me before! The only caveat is that you’ll need a “USE <database>” directive at the top of your query window but I don’t think that’s much of a bind! • How to Find Your IP Address in Ubuntu Linux

  In Windows, we use the command-line program ipconfig to find out our IP address. How do you find it in Ubuntu? We will show you two locations easily accessible through the GUI and, of course, a terminal command that will get your IP address in no time. The first location, and the easiest in most cases, is found by right clicking the network icon in the notification area and clicking Connection Information. This brings up a window which has a bunch of information, including your IP address. The second location, which shows you more detail than this first method, is at System > Administration > Network Tools. Select the right network device, and you’ve got a ton of information at your fingertips. Finally, if you can’t tear yourself away from a terminal window, the command to type in is: ifconfig Yes, it’s only one character different than ipconfig. Who would have guessed? As it turns out, you’re always a few clicks or keystrokes away from finding your IP address in Ubuntu. Isn’t choice great?
