• Migrating from "partial" Exchange 2003 to full Exchange 2003 usability

  I have a client that is using Exchange 2003 on SBS 2003 R2, but only for calendar sharing and contacts sharing. Their email is still coming to their clients via a POP3 account on each client's Outlook. I'd like to move them over to using Exchange for both email and the other things they are utilizing it for now. Can you folks guide me in the right direction? The setup: external domain is akin to domain.com (and is where they get their POP3 email from now) internal domain is akin to domain.local only simple hardware firewall (no ISA) static external IP is available to use My "assumptions": Setup SMTP default connector in Exchange for their existing external domain Have their existing email backed up to PST files (just in case) Setup the new MX records to point domain.com to the static external IP I'm a little confused how I'm going to setup their existing Exchange accounts with the proper SMTP address though. Right now it is just [email protected]. Do I just need to modify or create a new recipient policy? Are there other steps involved that I'm missing? Anyone with a walkthrough or even a basic "steps" is fine. I'm fairly used to Exchange 03, but I've been on Exchange 07 for a while now so going back is the weird part...plus I don't know what issues Exchange 03 on SBS has versus the normal "version".   I've made a site for a charity, and now have to move hosting for them. They have 5 or so email addresses on their current hosting account, which will of course need to move too. What's the best way to migrate their email addresses to the new server without too much hassle for them? They use POP3, so should I just create the account on the new server and then get them to update their settings? That won't remove their old emails from Outlook Express, will it?

  My customer has an external RAID6 array (8x 1TB in HP MSA60 enclosure) attached to HP SmartArray P600 controller. They have now decided to replace the server and the new one comes with LSI MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP. The HW supplier insists the migration is as simple as pulling the eSATA cable from P600 and inserting it into LSI but I'm not convinced. Unfortunately I have nowhere to test, and will have to do the exercise on the production array :( So the question in brief - is it possible to import the HP SmartArray P600-created RAID6 array to LSI MegaRAID 8888ELP?

• Migrating Windows XP BOOT.INI Settings to Windows 7 Boot-loader

  Hi, Two months ago my motherboard died, so I bought a used computer that came with Windows 7. I have since installed my old hard-drive, which had Windows XP on it, in this system. What I am trying to do now is to figure out a way to migrate the settings from XP's BOOT.INI into 7's boot-loader. Below is the BOOT.INI I used in XP (I have reduced the strings and updated the disks to point to the new location of the old HD. Oh and I am not clear on the drive letters. In XP, I could boot the recovery console or MS-DOS from a file in C:\ that contains the boot-sector. I am not sure what drive letter it would be called now—I had to manually change all the drive letters of the old partitions in Windows 7 because it auto-assigned them all wrong/differently). (Yes, I tried EasyBCD, but that did not help; it had no options for XP, and the best I managed was to get a choice of booting 7 or normal-mode XP—choosing XP didn't even give the old XP boot menu.) • Migrating to CF9: trouble getting JRun working with SSL

  I have a client on MX7 who wants to migrate to CF9. I have a dev environment for them on my WinXP machine where I've configured MX7 to run with JRun's built-in web server. I've had that working for a long time with both regular and SSL connections. I installed CF9 yesterday side-by-side with the existing MX7 install to start testing. The install was smooth and detected MX7, adjusted CF9's port numbers for no conflict, etc. Testing started well: MX7 over regular and SSL still worked and CF9 worked over regular HTTP. But I can't get CF9 to work with SSL. I installed a new certificate with keytool, FireFox (v3.6) complained about it being unsigned, I added it to the exception list, and now I get this: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost:9101. Peer reports it experienced an internal error. (Error code: ssl_error_internal_error_alert) I've been Googling that in all variations but can't find much help to get past this. I don't see any info in any log files either.   I have to migrate existing data which is in SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. The schema of two databases is different. For Example Locations table in SS2000 is split into two tables and has different columns. This is one time activity. After successful migration I don't need old db anymore. What is the best way to transfer data from one SQL Server to another having different schemas? I can write stored procedures to fetch data from SQL Server 2000 and insert/update tables in SQL Server 2005. What about SSIS? I don't have any experience with this and is this better to create package of SSIS because I don't need this again and need to learn it first. Thanks.

  As the title suggests, how can I migrate roaming profiles located in one drive (starting to fill up already) to another? Current share is like this "SVR1\Shares\UserProfiles\%username%\ But of course, this is located in C:/Shares/UserProfiles/%username%/ What do I need to do? Do I simply copy/paste into the bigger(RAID1) drive and then repoint all the profile paths (using AD Users&Computers profile properties)? • Migrating 10-15 Websites Running Linux, LAMP, RoR, WordPress

  Task is to move 10-15 websites running Linux to new servers hosted by Amazon. These boxes are currently on dedicated servers. Some sites are running WordPress, some have custom CMS, and others might have RoR applications. Unfortunately, there is sparse documentation regarding each site and how services/files are dependent on each other which means there is a lot of detective work that needs to take place. My goal is to properly document each site, what makes them work, etc., so future admins have at least something to work with. Currently my strategy is to download each site so I have a backup of the files then scan through them looking for configuration files -- db connections, apache configs, etc. Then, create a nice spreadsheet with these findings and migrate these out to the new server. My question to ServerFault is this, are there things you would look out for? Easier ways to handle this task that I'm missing? Points will be awarded to answers that help with efficiency.   I own 2 server with Windows 2008 R2, both DC. The first one is of course the Primary DC (with all FSMO). What I would like to do is ro dcdemote the 2nd DC, remove it from domain and replace the Windows 2008 r2 with 2012. I will then rejoin this 2nd DC (with the new 2012 server) to domain and dcpromo it (Server Management). After this is a new DC I would like to temporary transfer all the FSMO to this server, while I'm doing the same operation on what is actually the Primary DC. Is this a stupid solution? What I would like to do is a clean installation, I don't want to upgrade directly those systems. Suggestions? Ideas? Thanks, Mauro

  I need to replace my XenServer 6.1 resource pool hardware. I currently run Intel hardware and I have to move to AMD hardware (corporate politics and budget stuff, blah blah blah). I have downtime available so I can use cold migration - live migration is not required. I will also have the new hardware (AMD) alongside the old hardware (Intel). The XenServer docs say there may be problems exporting from one arch and importing to another "may not work" - http://docs.vmd.citrix.com/XenServer/6.1.0/1.0/en_gb/guest.html#importing_vms - but mentions nothing about simply turning off the VM on one arch and then powering it back on new arch. VMs are a mix of OS - some Windows, some Linux, multiple versions. Is this something that can be done with no problems, or are there problems I need to be aware of?

• Migrating email forwarding entries from DirectAdmin to Google App (Free edition)

  I have a website hosted in a shared hosting account and it contains a DirectAdmin (DA) control panel. From there, I can see some email forwarding entries. I would like to migrate the email server to the Google App's, I am going to change the MX records to point to Google email server in the DA. For the existing email accounts that I see in the DA, I will re-create them in the Google App. But for those email forwarding entries, I am confused. If I keep them there, will they still work after I have changed the MX record pointing to the Google email server? If not, this means I will need to re-create them in the Google App, right? Unfortunately, Google App (Free edition) does not seem to allow email forwarding like those in DA. Unless I choose to use other editons (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=175745). In DA, when I have created an email forwarding entry such as [email protected] - [email protected], I do not really need to create a dummy [email protected] email account and DA will still do the forwarding properly. The best I can do now, without upgrading the Google App edition, is to simply create dummy email accounts in the Google App and setup forwarding inside that email account, is this correct?

• Cache updates when migrating DNS from one provider to another

  This may be a Windows DNS specific question or a general DNS best practice question - I'm not sure! We migrated our 3rd party DNS provision from provider A to provider B. I noticed that our internal recursive windows DNS servers still had NS records cached for our domains pointing to provider A's servers, even though I changed the nameservers with our registrar several days ago, and even though selecting the properties of the cached records showed a TTL of 1 day. After 24 hours when the NS records in this cache have expired, will the DNS server go back to the TLD server for an update on the authority, or will it go by preference to dns1.providera.com since that is what it has cached? In this case I arranged to leave Provider A's servers up for a week to allow changes to propagate, so dns1.providera.com is still active and would still provide NS and SOA records that said that dns1.providera.com. was in charge of this domain. Given this fact, would the Windows DNS server ever go back to the TLD and pick up the authority changes, or would it just assume all was well and renew timestamps on its cached NS records? I wonder what would be the best approach to ensuring that caches pick this up. Should I:- (1) Leave Provider A's servers in place and active and wait for caches to catch up ... basically what we're doing now which seems to have issues - perhaps specifically for Windows servers, or perhaps more widely. (2) Leave Provider A's servers in place but change the NS and/or SOA information they provide to tell caches that new servers are in charge. (3) Remove Provider A's servers after 2*TTL to force remaining caches to update. The issue with (2) is that on Provider A's system I can't seem to change the NS or SOA information to anything other than their servers. The issue with (3) is that I'm not sure how a DNS server would behave in this case. When it couldn't reach the cached name servers, would it flush its cache and try a full recursive lookup, or would it just return an error, forcing the user to clear the cache manually? • Migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010 UID changes from 32 characters to 64 characters

  We have built a custom CRM tool that integrates with Exchange 2010 using Exchange Web Services. The issue we are encountering revolves around editing appointments through the CRM tool that were created in exchange 2003. We have migrated the sales staff from Exchange 2003 to 2010 so that we could use EWS. EWS works great except for appointments that were created prior to the migration. Those appointments created prior to the migration in Exchange 2003 cannot be modified using EWS. The reason is that the ExchangeItemUID for the appointment changed from 32 characters to 64 characters. EWS does not recognize ExchangeItemUIDs that are 32 characters. We are looking for a solution that will allow us to modify these appointments. We are open to ideas of running a script that will update all appointment events for the sales people so that 2003 appointments are converted to 2010 format. We are also open to alternate IDs as opposed to using UID. I have seen some references to using CleanGlobalObjectID, but I don't see that property in EWS. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

• Exchange 2007 and migrating only some users under a shared domain name

  I'm in the process of moving two law firms to hosted Exchange 2007, a service that the consulting company I work for offers. Let's call these two firms Crane Law and Poole Law. These two firms were ONE firm just six months ago, but split. So they have three email domains: Old Firm: craneandpoole.com New Firm 1: cranelaw.com New Firm 2: poolelaw.com Both Firm 1 & Firm 2 use craneandpoole.com email addresses, as for the other two domains, only people who work at the respective firm use that firm's domain name, natch. Currently these two firms are still using the same pre-split internal Exchange 2007 server, where MX records for all three domains point. Here's the problem. I'm not moving both companies at the same time. I'm moving Crane Law two weeks before Poole Law. During this two weeks, both companies need to be able to: Continue to receive emails addressed to craneandpoole.com Send emails between firms, using cranelaw.com and poolelaw.com accounts I also have a third problem: I'd like to setup all three domains in my hosting infrastructure way ahead of time, to make my own life easier What would solve all my problems would be, if there is some way I can tell Exchange 2007, even though this domain exists locally forward on the message to the outside world using public MX record as a basis for where to send it (or if I could somehow create a route for it statically that would work too). If this doesn't work, to address points #1 when I migrate Crane Law, I will delete all references locally to cranelaw.com on their current Exchange server, and setup individual forwards for each of their craneandpool.com mailboxes to forward to our hosted exchange server. This will also take care of point #2, since the cranelaw.com won't be there locally, when poolelaw.com tries to send to cranelaw.com, public MX records will be used for mail routing decisions and go to my hosted exchange. The bummer of that though is, I won't be able to setup poolelaw.com ahead of time in hosted Exchange, will have to wait to do it day of :( Sorry for the long and confusing post. Just wondering if there is a better or simpler way to do what I want? Three tier forests and that kind of thing are out, this is just a two week window where they won't be in the same place.

• Migrating data from Oracle database to Pervasive .DAT files

  The requirement is to migrate some tables with data from a Oracle database server to Pervasive database's .DAT file. Then those .DAT files will be used by a Pervasive database server. The restriction is that Oracle DB can not directly migrate to the Pervasive DB. It has to generate the .DAT files and then the new .DAT files will replace the old one for the Pervasive DB which will then use them for the new data. I was trying this task with SSIS. Exporting the Oracle table to a delimited .txt file and then creating a .DAT file from that text file. I can export the data from Oracle to .txt but I am not finding any way to migrate .txt to Pervasive .DAT? Is this the right approach? If not then please help with my problem.
