• Understanding Collabnet’s LDAP binding

- by Robert May
We want to use both subversion usernames and passwords as well as Active Directory for our authentication on our Collabnet subversion server. This has proven to be more of a challenge than we thought, mostly because Collabnet’s documentation is pretty poor. To supplement that documentation, I add my own. The first thing to understand is that the attribute that you specify in the LDAP Login Attribute ONLY applies to lookups done for the user. It does NOT apply to the LDAP Bind DN field. Second, know that the debug logs (error is the one you want) don’t give you debug information for the bind DN, just the login attempts. Third, by default, Active Directory does not allow anonymous binds, so you MUST put in a user that has the authority to query the Active Directory ldap. Because of these items, the values to set in those fields can be somewhat confusing. You’ll want to have ADSI Edit handy (I also used ldp, which is installed by default on server 2008), since ADSI Edit can help you find stuff in your active directory. Be careful, you can also break stuff. Here’s what should go into those fields. LDAP Security Level: Should be set to None LDAP Server Host: Should be set to the full name of a domain controller in your domain. For example, dc.mydomain.com LDAP Server Port: Should be set to 3268. The default port of 389 will only query that specific server, not the global catalog. By setting it to 3268, the global catalog will be queried, which is probably what you want. LDAP Base DN: Should be set to the location where you want the search for users to begin. By default, the search scope is set to sub, so all child organizational units below this setting will be searched. In my case, I had created an OU specifically for users for group policies. My value ended up being: OU=MyOu,DC=domain,DC=org. However, if you’re pointing it to the default Users folder, you may end up with something like CN=Users,DC=domain,DC=org (or com or whatever). Again, use ADSI edit and use the Distinguished Name that it shows. LDAP Bind DN: This needs to be the Distinguished Name of the user that you’re going to use for binding (i.e. the user you’ll be impersonating) for doing queries. In my case, it ended up being CN=svn svn,OU=MyOu,DC=domain,DC=org. Why the double svn, you might ask? That’s because the first and last name fields are set to svn and by default, the distinguished name is the first and last name fields! That’s important. Its NOT the username or account name! Again, use ADSI edit, browse to the username you want to use, right click and select properties, and then search the attributes for the Distinguished Name. Once you’ve found that, select it and click View and you can copy and paste that into this field. LDAP Bind Password: This is the password for the account in the Bind DN LDAP login Attribute: sAMAccountName. If you leave this blank, uid is used, which may not even be set. This tells it to use the Account Name field that’s defined under the account tab for users in Active Directory Users and Computers. Note that this attribute DOES NOT APPLY to the LDAP Bind DN. You must use the full distinguished name of the bind DN. This attribute allows users to type their username and password for authentication, rather than typing their distinguished name, which they probably don’t know. LDAP Search Scope: Probably should stay at sub, but could be different depending on your situation. LDAP Filter: I left mine blank, but you could provide one to limit what you want to see. LDP would be helpful for determining what this is. LDAP Server Certificate Verification: I left it checked, but didn’t try it without it being checked. Hopefully, this will save some others pain when trying to get Collabnet setup. • Block With Given ID Does Not Exist - Minecraft Mod

- by inixsoftware
I have tried to make my own Minecraft Block using Forge, but for some reason, when I use /give Playerxxx 1000 1 the game says, There is no block with id '1000' My Block Code: package net.minecraft.blockr; import net.minecraft.block.Block; import net.minecraft.block.material.Material; import net.minecraft.creativetab.CreativeTabs; public class Basalt extends Block { public Basalt(int par1, Material par2Material) { super(par1, par2Material); this.setCreativeTab(CreativeTabs.tabBlock); } } Mod code: package net.minecraft.blockr; import cpw.mods.fml.common.Mod; import cpw.mods.fml.common.Mod.Init; import cpw.mods.fml.common.network.NetworkMod; import cpw.mods.fml.common.registry.GameRegistry; import cpw.mods.fml.common.registry.LanguageRegistry; import net.minecraft.block.Block; import net.minecraft.block.material.Material; @Mod(modid="blockr", name="Blockr Mod", version="PreAlpha v0.0.1") @NetworkMod(clientSideRequired=true, serverSideRequired=false) public class BlockrMod { public static Block basalt; @Init public void load() { basalt = new Basalt(1000, Material.ground).setUnlocalizedName("basalt"); GameRegistry.registerBlock(basalt, basalt.getUnlocalizedName()); LanguageRegistry.addName(basalt, "Basalt Block"); } public String getVersion() { return "0.0.1"; } } What exactly is going wrong? My package is blockr (as my mod is called blockr) I know my mod was loaded as I see in Forge under Mods I see my mod

• Setting SVN permissions with Dav SVN Authz

- by Ken
There seems to be a path inheritance issue which is boggling me over access restrictions. For instance, if I grant rw access one group/user, and wish to restrict it some /../../secret to none, it promptly spits in my face. Here is an example of what I'm trying to achieve in dav_svn.authz [groups] grp_W = a, b, c, g grp_X = a, d, f, e grp_Y = a, e, [/] * = @grp_Y = rw [somerepo1:/projectPot] @grp_W = rw [somerepo2:/projectKettle] @grp_X = rw What is expected: grp_Y has rw access to all repositories, while grp_W and grp_X only have access to their respective repositories. What occurs: grp_Y has access to all repositories, while grp_W and grp_X have access to nothing If I flip the access ordering where I give everyone access and restrict it in each repository, it promply ignores the invalidation rule (stripping of rights) and gives everyone the access granted at the root level. Forgoing groups, it performs the same with user specific provisions; even fully defined such as: [/] a = rw b = c = d = e = f = g = rw [somerepo1:/projectPot] a = rw b = rw c = rw d = e = rw f = g = rw [somerepo2:/projectKettle] a = rw b c d = rw e = rw f = rw g Which yields the exact same result. According to the documentation I'm following all protocols so this is insane. Running on Apache2 with dav_svn

• Can't configure PAM + LDAP on Debian Lenny - Getting error=49 on server logs

- by Jorge Suárez de Lis
I've been migrating some servers and desktops using Ubuntu 10.04 from getting the users from an old OpenLDAP implementation to a newer Centos Active Directory. I haven't had any problems so far, until I reached a Debian Lenny server. I've set up the server as the others, setting /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. However, when I issue "getent passwd", I get nothing from the LDAP server. Reading the pam_ldap manpage, I realized that /etc/ldap.conf was not an accepted file by pam_ldap -it worked with Ubuntu though-, so I renamed it to /etc/pam_ldap.conf. Same result. However, once I've changed the name of this file, when I login using SSH I get this on the LDAP server logs: [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 fd=155 slot=155 connection from x.x.x.50 to 10.1.176.237 [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 op=0 BIND dn="uid=ubuntu,ou=Applications,ou=CITIUS,dc=inv,dc=usc,dc=es" method=128 version=3 [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 op=0 RESULT err=0 tag=97 nentries=0 etime=0 dn="uid=ubuntu,ou=applications,ou=citius,dc=inv,dc=usc,dc=es" [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 op=1 SRCH base="ou=People,ou=CITIUS,dc=inv,dc=usc,dc=es" scope=2 filter="(uid=jorge.suarez)" attrs=ALL [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 op=1 RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=1 etime=0 notes=U [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 op=2 BIND dn="uid=jorge.suarez,ou=People,ou=CITIUS,dc=inv,dc=usc,dc=es" method=128 version=3 [20/Jul/2012:11:19:40 +0200] conn=16501 op=2 RESULT err=49 tag=97 nentries=0 etime=0 The password isn't working. Maybe this is not supported by Debian Lenny? On pam_ldap.conf, I've set up this, as in all the other servers: # Do not hash the password at all; presume # the directory server will do it, if # necessary. This is the default. pam_password md5 Also tried clear, but it didn't work. Anyways, it's weird that issuing getent passwd still gets me no users. However, if I use pamtest from the package libpam-dotfile to test login, it works. # pamtest ssh jorge.suarez Trying to authenticate <jorge.suarez> for service <ssh>. Password: Authentication successful. # pamtest foo jorge.suarez Trying to authenticate <jorge.suarez> for service <foo>. Password: Authentication successful. But "su" won't work also: # su jorge.suarez Id. descoñecido: jorge.suarez Just the output from getent passwd : # getent passwd root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash daemon:x:1:1:daemon:/usr/sbin:/bin/sh bin:x:2:2:bin:/bin:/bin/sh sys:x:3:3:sys:/dev:/bin/sh sync:x:4:65534:sync:/bin:/bin/sync games:x:5:60:games:/usr/games:/bin/sh man:x:6:12:man:/var/cache/man:/bin/sh lp:x:7:7:lp:/var/spool/lpd:/bin/sh mail:x:8:8:mail:/var/mail:/bin/sh news:x:9:9:news:/var/spool/news:/bin/sh uucp:x:10:10:uucp:/var/spool/uucp:/bin/sh proxy:x:13:13:proxy:/bin:/bin/sh www-data:x:33:33:www-data:/var/www:/bin/sh backup:x:34:34:backup:/var/backups:/bin/sh list:x:38:38:Mailing List Manager:/var/list:/bin/sh irc:x:39:39:ircd:/var/run/ircd:/bin/sh gnats:x:41:41:Gnats Bug-Reporting System (admin):/var/lib/gnats:/bin/sh nobody:x:65534:65534:nobody:/nonexistent:/bin/sh libuuid:x:100:101::/var/lib/libuuid:/bin/sh Debian-exim:x:101:103::/var/spool/exim4:/bin/false statd:x:102:65534::/var/lib/nfs:/bin/false sshd:x:104:65534::/var/run/sshd:/usr/sbin/nologin luser:x:1000:1000:Usuario local de Burdeos,,,:/home/luser:/bin/bash messagebus:x:105:107::/var/run/dbus:/bin/false sge-admin:x:1001:1001:Administrador do SGE,,,:/home/cluster/sge-admin:/bin/bash ntp:x:107:110::/home/ntp:/bin/false haldaemon:x:108:111:Hardware abstraction layer,,,:/var/run/hald:/bin/false vde2-net:x:109:114::/var/run/vde2:/bin/false uml-net:x:110:115::/home/uml-net:/bin/false polkituser:x:111:116:PolicyKit,,,:/var/run/PolicyKit:/bin/false Debian-pxe:x:113:65534:Dummy user for Debian pxe package,,,:/home/Debian-pxe:/bin/false Nscd was stopped from the beginning.

• passwd ldap request to ActiveDirectory fails on half of 2500 users

- by groovehunter
We just setup ActiveDirectory in my company and imported all linux users and groups. On the linux client: (configured to ask ldap in nsswitch.conf): If i do a common ldapsearch to the AD ldap server i get the complete number of about 2580 users. But if i do this it only gets a part of all users, 1221 in number: getent passwd | wc -l Running it with strace shows kind of attempt to reconnect My ideas were: Does the linux authentication procedure run ldapsearch with a parameter incompatible to AD ldap ? Or probably it is a encoding issue. The windows user are entered in AD with all kind of characters. Maybe someone could shed light on this and give a hint how to debug that further!? • Testlink stop working when configuring it to use LDAP

- by YuriAlbuquerque
I have a TestLink webservice running on a server, and OpenLDAP running on other server. There are no firewall problems between them (I managed to configure Redmine, on the same server as TestLink, to use LDAP authentication). But whenever I place the configuration for LDAP in TestLink, TestLink stops working. I have no clue on what is happening. This is where I define LDAP's settings on custom_config.inc.php: $tlCfg->authentication['method'] = 'LDAP'; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_server'] = 'serverip'; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_port'] = '389'; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_version'] = '2'; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_root_dn'] = 'dc=mycompany,dc=com,dc=br'; $tlCfg->ldap_organization'] = ''; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_uid_field'] = 'uid'; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_bind_dn'] = 'myuser'; //Not actual login name and password, for obvious reasons $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_bind_passwd'] = 'mypassword'; $tlCfg->authentication['ldap_tls'] = false; $tlCfg->user_self_signup = true; I'm certain that OpenLDAP is 2.X. My TestLink version is 1.9.3 What could I be doing wrong?

• Error on LDAP Login - xsessions error - Session lasted less than 10 seconds

- by Draineh
I have two machines both running CentOS 5.6 64bit. On the LDAP Machine it has a DHCP, BIND and OpenLDAP Server. LDAP is correctly configured and users can authenticate against it. Using root I configure machine 2 to use LDAP for authentication and when trying to log in it successfully authenticates against a saved user on the LDAP Server but produces the following errors and then throws me back to the login screen. I can still sign in as root and use the machine as normal. The syslog doesn't show any errors and I disabled SELinux to see if it was interfering. The error; Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not lgoged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. There is then a tickbox to view the contents of ~/.xsessions-errors which contains; /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with utmp /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/sessreg -a -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm:0:Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "admin" localuser:admin being added to access control list No profile for user 'admin' found /bin/sh: /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /etc/X11/Xinit/Xclients: No such file or directory /bin/sh: line 0: exec: /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients: cannot execute: No such file or directory Apologies if someone notices something isn't spelt quite right or doesn't sound right, the system never actually creates or saves this file so I have had to type it across from the screen. Through the authentication panel in CentOS on the client I have set it to create the users home directory on login. The user is being correctly authenticated and the /home/admin folder has been created but this error would suggest it has not? The client is a new install on an 80gb hard drive so there is well over 80% of the drive still available. Thanks for any suggestions or pointers.

• Java, LDAP: Make it not ignore blank passwords?

- by Steve
I'm maintaining some legacy Java LDAP code. I know next to nothing about LDAP. The program below basically just sends the userid and password to the LDAP server, receives notification back if the credentials are good. If so, it prints out the LDAP attributes received from the LDAP server, if not it prints out an exception. All works well if a bad password is given. An "invalid credentials" exception gets thrown. However, if a blank password is sent to the LDAP Server, authentication will still happen, LDAP attributes will still be returned. Is this unhappy situation due to the LDAP server allowing blank passwords, or does the code below need to be adjusted such a blank password will get fed to the LDAP server in such a way so it will get rejected? I do have data validation in place. I took it off in a testing environment to solve another issue and noticed this problem. I would prefer not to have this problem underneath the data validation. Thanks much in advance for any information import javax.naming.*; import javax.naming.directory.*; import java.util.*; import java.sql.*; public class LDAPTEST { public static void main(String args[]) { String lcf = "com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory"; String ldapurl = "ldaps://ldap-cit.smew.acme.com:636/o=acme.com"; String loginid = "George.Jetson"; String password = ""; DirContext ctx = null; Hashtable env = new Hashtable(); Attributes attr = null; Attributes resultsAttrs = null; SearchResult result = null; NamingEnumeration results = null; int iResults = 0; int iAttributes = 0; env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, lcf); env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, ldapurl); env.put(Context.SECURITY_PROTOCOL, "ssl"); env.put(Context.SECURITY_AUTHENTICATION, "simple"); env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, "uid=" + loginid + ",ou=People,o=acme.com"); env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, password); try { ctx = new InitialDirContext(env); attr = new BasicAttributes(true); attr.put(new BasicAttribute("uid",loginid)); results = ctx.search("ou=People",attr); while (results.hasMore()) { result = (SearchResult)results.next(); resultsAttrs = result.getAttributes(); for (NamingEnumeration enumAttributes = resultsAttrs.getAll(); enumAttributes.hasMore();) { Attribute a = (Attribute)enumAttributes.next(); System.out.println("attribute: " + a.getID() + " : " + a.get().toString()); iAttributes++; }// end for loop iResults++; }// end while loop System.out.println("Records == " + iResults + " Attributes: " + iAttributes); }// end try catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } }// end function main() }// end class LDAPTEST

• Configuring OpenLDAP and SSL

I am having trouble trying to connect to a secure OpenLDAP server which I have set up. • How to create public html (apache2) with LDAP authentication?

- by borjamf
Im running Apache2 on Ubuntu 12.04 Server because I want to create a home directory for each ldap user. I'm using LDAP for authentication and it's working ok. Also I've done some tests with LDAP module for Apache2 and it's working ok. The problem with this LDAP authentication is that any success login can access to ~user/public_html, even if the user is not the owner of that home. I dont know how to control that, for example, userldap2 access to userldap1/public_html. I want that only the userldap1 access to userldap1. Could anybody tell me how to control that with LDAP authentication? I hope that you'll understand me. My config (auth_ldap.conf) <Directory /home/disco2/*/public_html> AuthName "Authentication" AuthType basic AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthzLDAPAuthoritative off AuthLDAPURL ldap://prueba.borja/dc=prueba,dc=borja?uid? Require ldap-filter objectClass=posixAccount </Directory>

• Clients not recognizing secondary LDAP groups?

- by Nick
I'm having an issue where users who are members of secondary groups in LDAP are not being recognized as members of that group by the client. In this case, user jdoe is not being recognized as a member of the projects group. On the client, getent group shows: projects:*:20001:1001,1002,1003,1004,1005,1006 and getent passwd shows: jdoe:x:1003:10003:John Doe:/home/jdoe:/bin/bash But if I log in to the client as jdoe, and run id, I get: uid=1003(jdoe) gid=10003(jdoe) groups=24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),44(video),46(plugdev),10003(jdoe) It recognizes jdoe's primary group, and the secondary groups that are appended by the client to all LDAP users, but the LDAP secondary groups are not in the list. We can see that jdoe's id is in the projects group, so why is the projects group not showing when jdoe runs the id command? The group objects are basic posixGroup entries, with a memberUid attribute for each of its members. We are using OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.04 server and clients.

• Modeling RBAC actors using LDAP (Core X.5xx)

- by Tetsujin no Oni
Mirrored from stackoverflow... When implementing an RBAC model using an LDAP store (I'm using Apache Directory 1.0.2 as a testbed), some of the actors are obviously mappable to specific objectClasses: Resources - I don't see a clear mapping for this one. applictionEntity seems only tangentially intended for this purpose Permissions - a Permission can be viewed as a single-purpose Role; obviously I'm not thinking of an LDAP permission, as they govern access to LDAP objects and attributes rather than an RBAC permission to a Resource Roles - maps fairly directly to groupOfNames or groupOfUniqueNames, right? Users - person In the past I've seen models where a Resource isn't dealt with in the directory in any fashion, and Permissions and Roles were mapped to Active Directory Groups. Is there a better way to represent these actors? How about a document discussing good mappings and intents of the schema?

• LDAP Authentication for multiple AD Domains

- by TrevJen
I have 3 full trust domains (2 child and one root). I need to use LDAP to allow authntication for domain users. The trick is that I need the application to use an AD server for the child domain BUT proxy the LDAP query and authentication for the root domain. I see that it maty be possible with AD LDS and some trusts and synching, but it looks pretty hairy and overly complicated. The short of it is: 3 domains (Parent, ChildA, ChildB) My 3rd party app will need to use ChildA domain servers to authenticate either: a. a user in the parent domain or b. a user in the ChildB domain I already have full trusts between all domains, and regular NTLM authentication works fine (unless you are trying to authenticate with LDAP)

• How to add admin users in 389 LDAP, fedora directory server

- by chandank
I want to create couple of Admin users who have access to create/delete users on a particular group/Organization Unit. For example, User: uid=testadmin, ou=people, dc=my,dc=net Should have access to create new users/delete users under ou=People,dc=my,dc=net I tried with below ACI but did not work (target = "ldap:///ou=People,dc=my,dc=net")(targetattr = "*") (version 3.0;acl "testadmin Permissions";allow (proxy)(userdn = "ldap:///uid=testadmin,ou=people,dc=my,dc=net");) I am able to add administrative users from the Directory Server console, but this user data is not stored in ldif files and only stored in binary database at /var/lib/dirsrv/slap-ldap/db/. Only problem is these users have full power and I am not sure how to restrict their access.

• Replicate portion of an LDAP directory to external server

- by colemanm
We're in the process of setting up a Jabber server on Amazon EC2 right now, and we'd like to have our internal users authenticate via LDAP so we don't have to create/manage a separate set of user accounts than the master directory in the office. My question is: is there a way to copy, unidirectionally, a segment of our internal LDAP directory (the user accounts OU) to an external LDAP server and authenticate Jabber against that? We're trying to work around having our externally hosted machines out in the cloud accessing our internal network directly... If we can replicate in one direction only a subset of the user accounts, then if that gets compromised we don't necessarily have a critical security breach into our internal network.

• Java login through LDAP

- by Salda
I am starting to write an application for our office and the first step is authentication through LDAP where all users already exist. Everything I need is a code in Java to check if the pair <nick, password> is right. Google found me many links, but I think that I will find here the most sofisticate, short and up to date solution (I don't want to read all articles like 2 whole days to do something so simple). I have written many dkBs of code in C++, but in Java I am total noob and I haven't coded anything with LDAP yet so try to be simple if speaking in Java and LDAP terms if possible.

• Private Git repo using Smart HTTP with LDAP authentification

- by ALOToverflow
I've been crawling the interwebz and getting my hands dirty for the last few days, but I can't seem to make it all work together. I managed to get a HTTP repo working with Ubuntu 10.04 over Smart HTTP (pull and push over HTTP) for a single repo. This means that I do the initial setup over SSH to the server (git init --bare) and after that the clients can pull and push to it (git clone http://servername/allgitrepos/repo.git). Unfortunately it's impossible to add a new repo without SSHing to the server and adding it manually) i.e. git push http://servername/allgitrepos/repo2.git (allgitrepos is available for everyone to read-write and execute) would fail talking about git update-server-info (which seems to be a general error message). So far the repository is anonymous, so I would like to authenticate using LDAP and also use the LDAP creds to make the git commit. So, how can I push new repos to the server and how can I use the LDAP creds to make the git commit. Thanks

• Invalid user names when creating a LDAP account

- by h1d
I'm trying to set up a system where a visitor can enter any user name in a form to create a new user and in the end it gets built on LDAP directory and I'm planning that to be mapped as a UNIX account as well (on Ubuntu Linux) by making the system look up for system accounts on the LDAP. Doing so is fine, but I feel that many user names should be avoided, one of the obvious being 'root' and all the other user names taken for daemons etc. How do you tackle at this problem? Do you make up a list of disallowed user names by checking /etc/passwd? I was thinking that if, internally, the user names could be prepended as 'ldap_' or something, it will avoid any naming conflicts but that seems hard when the LDAP entry name is 'joe' but the system account will look like 'ldap_joe'. Not even sure how that can be achieved.

• Small, simple LDAP server as an alternative to OpenLDAP

- by jstarek
I have taken a look at the installation and configuration instructions for the newer OpenLDAP releases and decided that it's too much work to set up for my small userbase. Basically, I only use LDAP to synchronize user accounts on a small number of machines (ok, this does not really require a directory server) and to give those users access to some web-based tools, avoiding the need to create user accounts in several places. Can you recommend a small, simple LDAP server for use on *nix systems? My only requirements are the ability to serve up PosixAccount and Group objects via LDAP.

• LDAP loginShell on platforms with different paths

- by neoice
I'm using LDAP to deal with users and authentication across my network. I'm now adding FreeBSD hosts and have hit a problem with login shells. on Linux, shells tend to be in /bin/$shellname, so setting my login shell in LDAP to /bin/zsh works perfectly. on FreeBSD, /bin/zsh doesnt exist, I need to use /usr/local/bin/zsh. is there a solution to this? I imagine I might be able to make some sort of login-shell.sh script that LDAP passes out as the "shell" and then use the script to determine the actual shell for the user, but I'm not a fan of that idea. I'm using Debian and FreeBSD, both with a standard OpenLDAP/PAM/nss setup. edit: it looks like using /bin/sh and adding an exec $shell to .profile would "work", but that doesnt scale very well.

• Windows server 2003SP2 as LDAP replica master for Mac OSX 10.6

- by FrancoR
Hello there, we have a single domain controller with Windows 2003 with few child. All the users are in the main DC. We have already created a connection from AD to Mac Xserve 10.6 and can read all the users, but: 1. If the DC goes down (or the net), Mac lose all the users, so no file access, no emails, no nothing. 2. the users are in read only. Mac admin cannot reset password, change attribute and so on. What we need is a stable environment where both AD admins and LDAP admins can manage the users; if one server goes offline the users of the other server should work (email, shared folders) just fine. Thanks in advance P.S. we already tried to connect the MacOSX to Windows LDAP, instead of AD, but we're unable to do it: MacOSX requires DNS IP (gotcha), user admin and password (ok) and a root LDAP password we're unable to find any reference of it in Windows 2003.

• Using LDAP/Active Directory with PIN based authentication

- by nishantjr
We'd like to integrate our service with LDAP, but because of hardware constraints, we're only allow 4 digit user ids and passwords. What would be the best practice for performing such an authetication? We've considered adding User ID and PIN attributes to the LDAP user schema, but we're not sure how happy people would be with modifying their schema to interact with our service. The PIN attribute would have to have the same support that native user passwords have. (hashing and salting etc.) UPDATE Another consideration is how ldap_bind works with this scenario. How do we get it to use an alternate authentication method? Can this even be done without affecting other services that use the same LDAP server?

• Postfix + LDAP + Recipient Delimiter

- by Coops
I'm trying to get my Postfix and LDAP-backend to accept recipent delimiters (aka address extensions). The rest of the mail system is working fine, but when an email is received with an extension (e.g. [email protected]), it tries to look up "coops+test" against the LDAP service and fails. Obviously this is wrong, and it should strip out the "+test" part. In my postfix config the string being passed to the LDAP service is "%s", per an example line below: accounts_query_filter = (&(objectClass=MailAccount)(mail=%s)(accountActive=TRUE)(delete=FALSE)) Is there a postfix variable which represents the email account minus the extension? I've found a similar post here, but no actual solution.

• Can a Silverlight application authenticate versus a local LDAP/ActiveDirectory Server

- by caryden
If I have an externally hosted application (www.outside.com) outside the firewall but users within a company wanted to be able to enable LDAP authentication against their local (behind the firewall) AD server (acting as LDAP) or other LDAP server (call it ldap.inside.com), how would this be done. It seems technically possible in that when a user tried to login to outside.com through a client-side silverlight interface, that the SL app could connect to the outside.com login service and be told to authenticate that user against ldap.inside.com. The SL app would make the calls to ldap.inside.com to authenticate the user. Of course, there is the issue of how the server is notified securely that the client authenticated itself...Has anyone done this?
