  • MSBuild: Items + Batching + CreateItem + Transforms Question

    I have this bit of an msbuild project that is making me wonder why it the outcome is the way it is. Not that it is causing an issue or anything of the sort, but I would like to try and better my understanding of it. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Project xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003" DefaultTargets="TestTarget1;TestTarget2" ToolsVersion="3.5"> <ItemGroup> <PathDir Include="C:\RootDir\UniqueDir1"/> <PathDir Include="C:\RootDir\UniqueDir2" /> </ItemGroup> <Target Name="TestTarget1" Outputs="%(PathDir.Identity)"> <PropertyGroup> <RootPath>%(PathDir.Identity)</RootPath> </PropertyGroup> <ItemGroup> <SubDirectory Include="Common1"/> <SubDirectory Include="Common2"/> </ItemGroup> <CreateItem Include="@(SubDirectory->'$(RootPath)\%(Identity)')"> <Output TaskParameter="Include" ItemName="FullPath"/> </CreateItem> <Message Text="@(FullPath)"/> </Target> <Target Name="TestTarget2"> <Message Text="@(FullPath)"/> </Target> </Project> So I have two main paths that are unique, and within each I have two directories with the same names in each of the unique paths. In target1, I am batching against the identity of the items in PathDir, and then performing a transform on item SubDirectory, which contains the common folder names found in the unique directories, to create a new item containing the full paths. So anyways, after that, the output for the targets is as follows: Target 1: C:\RootDir\UniqueDir1\Common1;C:\RootDir\UniqueDir1\Common2 C:\RootDir\UniqueDir2\Common1;C:\RootDir\UniqueDir2\Common2 Target 2: C:\RootDir\UniqueDir1\Common1;C:\RootDir\UniqueDir1\Common2;C:\RootDir\UniqueDir2\Common1;C:\RootDir\UniqueDir2\Common2 So my question I guess is ... why does target1 only display the directories containing the directory it is batching against? I know it probably has to do with batching, but thats all I know.

    Hi guys, We've recently upgraded from VS2008 - VS2010 (and hence upgrading from Web Deployment Project to proper deployment templates). Alas - my Workflow skills arent quite up to scratch. Previously, we used a MSBuild task to execute the Yahoo YUI Javascript/CSS compression module to minify/compress javascript and css files. Anyone manage to accomplish this task with Visual Studio 2010 / TFS 2010 ?

I do the builds (which occur locally using TeamCity AFAIK), but would like the code to be pushed up to our testing server once the build is completed.   • MSBUILD ClickOnce Error: Deployment and application do not have matching security zones

    We're trying to publish a ClickOnce application through msbuild. We've got it working fine for an installed version of the windows application. However, when we set install to false so that it just runs the app from the web we get the following error when we try to run the application from the URL: "Deployment and application do not have matching security zones" This works fine in IE. We only get the error message in Chrome and FireFox.   • MSBuild target _CopyWebApplication does not copy all necessary files to the bin folder

    Elsewhere on the Web, you can find recommendations on using something like this to simulate the Publish feature in the VS 2005-2008 IDE from a command-line (I hope I did not goof up the syntax!): msbuild /t:ResolveReferences;_CopyWebApplication /p:BuildingProject=true;OutDir=C:\inetpub\wwwroot\ blah.csproj Now, it looks like the .dll's copy fine. However, there are certain configuration files and template files that are copied to the bin folder which are needed for the app to work. For example, an NHibernate configuration file shows up in blah.csproj as: <None Include="blah.cfg.xml"> <CopyToOutputDirectory>PreserveNewest</CopyToOutputDirectory> </None> While using Publish from within the IDE copies this file as it should, the aforementioned _CopyWebApplication target does not. I need this file to be copied in the build script. Is this desired behavior for _CopyWebApplication? Any recommendations on how to fix this?

(I don't sure if this steps is required, I think that MSdeploy can build the project itself, but it's good step to be sure that the project is compile). Deploy the website. First we need to create the "build deployment package" files. Then we can deploy them. The question is how to get step #2 done.

  • MSBuild Override Project Reference to resolve to Precompiled Assembly

    Situation I have about 400 csproj files using project references. About 3 of those a separate team wants to fork and incorporate into a standalone app. I branched the 3 projects of interest, and because the separate team uses a diff SVN repo I used svn externals to pull in these projects into the folder of the standalone app. Obviously since this team uses a different folder structure the project references no longer resolve. Attempted Solution I figured setting the msbuild properties ReferencePath and AdditionalLibPaths to point to a directory with all the precompiled dependencies would allow the project references a fallback point and resolve correctly. However that doesn't appear to be the case. Question Does anybody know a way to have a failed projectreference look up resolve to the precompiled dll? Perhaps point me to an automated tool to convert projectreferences to dll references? Or is there a better way to solve this problem? Thanks

  • Problem building with MSBuild on Team Build

    Hi, I have recently upgraded from TFS2005 to TFS2010 (and sub-sequently the team build server). I used to be able to get a team build on one of my solutions to work pretty easily, (see structure below) Solution |_Web Site | |_Bin | |_Other Files |_Project 1 |_Project 2 |_Project (n) Now, i can no longer get a build working correctly as it doesnt appear to build all my projects any longer (i've had to create a new build definition). Either that, or its not building the projects in such an order that when it hits project X, that a project it depends on (Project A), has not yet been built, and as such fails. I'm just basically trying to build a web site (not web application project), with some Dependant / linked projects. Why must it be so hard! Everything builds fine in the IDE. If i even open the solution copied to the build server under the 'Sources' directory, i am able to build it fine in the IDE on that server. No such luck with MSBuild though. Thoughts?

  • Transforming TT files in MsBuild

    I need to build a DSL Solution using MsBuild and want to be able to transform the TT files, I have tried the guide on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee847423(VS.100).aspx but I am getting the following errors: Failed to resolve include text for file:{0} and also Loading the include file '{0}' returned a null or empty string. There is a page on MSDN which has these issues and there resolutions : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb126242(VS.100).aspx but don't really give me enough information to resolve the issue. One thing to note in the error it has the following path: Error 72 Failed to resolve include text for file:C:\source\XXXXXXXX\Dsl\GeneratedCode\Dsl\ToolboxHelper.tt. Line=-1, Column=-1 Dsl but the location of the actual TT file is C:\source\XXXXXXXX\Dsl\GeneratedCode\ToolboxHelper.tt

  • Environment variables get lost between MSBuild projects

    Hi, I have a .NET solution containing following projects: web application (WAP) web deployment (WDP, .wdproj) wix setup (WIX, .wixproj) In the WDP I've used a custom MSBuild task (SetEnvVar) to set some env. variables for further use in the build process. After setting them I can use them without prob. in the WDP but in the WIX they are empty/undefined. The strange thing is that when I reference those env. vars in the WIX files (by using properties in .wxs or preproc vars in .wxi) I get the values as expected. Do you have any idea why the env. vars get lost/are undefined in .wixproj? By the way the (solution) build process is triggered from inside VS 2010.

Does anyone know how to force the output from msbuild to be ascii or if this is the problem? There were some errors like this years ago related to the DDK acorrding to some other forums. Thanks.

    I have got a problem with reusing the same MSBuild targets for different build types on TFS. Let me describe the situation. I have got two build types (CI - for continuous integration and RC - for release candidate). So I have got two build types defined in the TFS. Their *.proj files are under: - $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/CI - $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/RC Also, I have got some common targets, like: ChnageVersion.taget, Deploy.tagert, etc. and I import them in the main *.proj file. Unfortunaltely, I have to keep two copies of them, one in each build type. I've been struggling to have only one copy of the common targets somewhere, but I give up. I can't do it, because when the build starts on a build agent, the build files are downloaded from: $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/CI only. How can I make the build agent / TFS / whatever to download also $/Repository/TeamBuildTypes/Common for example?

  • How do I set a property to the output of a command in msbuild/xbuild

    In msbuild/xbuild I'd like to have a "libPath" property which can be ovveridden on the commandline using /p:libpath="/path/to/all/libs". But when this property is undefined I want to call pkg-config --retrieve-Path somePackage to get the current systems path. I thought like here I need the output of a command to be stored in a Property. The command always returns one line of output. I have tryied something like <PropertyGroup> <LibPath /> </PropertyGroup> <Task ....> <Exec Command="pkg-config --retrieve-Path somePackage" Condition="$(LibPath)' == ''"> <OutputTaskParameter="output" PropertyName="LibPath" /> </Exec> </Task> But that didn't work.

  • Versioning CommonAssemblyInfo.cs and MSBuild

    So I have a CommonAssemblyInfo.cs linked into all the projects in my solution and is dynamically generated by my rake/albacore scripts which is not checked into source control. I also have a CommonAssemblyInfo.cs.local for use when there is no ruby available, mainly to be used by devs. Is it possible to have a msbuild task or something that runs before any of the other project compilation that will copy CommonAssemblyInfo.cs.local to CommonAssemblyInfo.cs before trying to compile my solution? I hate having to have a command you have to just know about and type in order to open and buidl the solution in Visual Studio.

I want the script to be run each time a developer builds from Visual Studio on their local development machine, so that a) the build process they are runnning locally is the same as that run by the build server so any problems in the build can be identified immediately by the developer b) many of the operations of the build script are run on local builds, for example running of unit tests, generation of code coverage reports etc How is this possible in Visual Studio (2008)? Note I am running a single solution product with multiple projects.

  • Visual Studio 2008, MSBuild: "replacement" projects

    Hello, My solution has a library project which needs a special environment to be built (lots of external libraries and tools)... but it is not vital to our application. We'd like to avoid installing these tools when not necessary (most of our developers work on other parts of code). We have created another project which has the same API, but has an empty implementation and is compilable without those external tools. I'd like to be able to easily switch between those projects and still get all the references in other projects correct. I don't know VS/MSBuild very well, but willing to learn whatever is necessary. Is it possible? I am looking for ideas... We're using Subversion, and solutions involving some hacks inside VCS are also welcome.
