• Ubuntu does not recognize my built-in monitor.

  I've recently discovered of a boot problem Ubuntu has with my laptop. I have successfully installed Ubuntu on two other computers, and I've never experienced this problem. What happens is, after the live boot CD loads, the screen goes completely blank. Although, I suspected that there was no problem booting, so I loaded with BIOS only, which worked perfectly fine. Of course, not being very proficient with this, I have no idea what needs to be done to fix the problem. I have switchable graphics cards(the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, and some low-end Intel card), and an Intel i5 quad core processor. I was booting with the Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit desktop distribution. If there's any more information you need from me, please let me know. EDIT: I was able to look into this a bit more, thanks to one of the comments provided, and I have some new information. Ubuntu does seem to be able to recognize both of my graphics cards. The problem I found was that, in the Xorg.0 log, it mentions that there were "no screens found." I'm using a notebook, so the screen is built in. Does anyone know of a way to get Ubuntu to recognize the monitor?

• How to target SCOM 2007 R2 monitor to monitor only one server

  Hi, This might be basic, but hopefully someone can help me: We have a well-working SCOM 2007 R2 implementation monitoring our Microsoft infrastructure. Now, on one of these servers there's an event (logged to the eventlog) that I need to be alerted on. I have created a group and put this one windows server in it. Then, I created a monitor with simple event detection, entered the event id and used the group name as "monitor target". This doesnt work - the monitor doesn't show up in health explorer at all. However, If I create the monitor with "Windows computers" as target it works, but that means I'll have to disable the monitor, and then enable it for the group, which is cumbersome and slightly illogical to me. Is this by design, or am I doing something wrong?

• Philips Monitor problems - vertical lines on screen

  I have an old CRT Philips Monitor 17'' and it was working well. There were problems with the electrical power and the monitor started to make some sound and a smoke was getting out of it. I quickly switched it off the power, and in the morning when the power was ok i started the monitor and it appeared to be working and it worked for a couple of minutes when i find out some smell was coming from it, and after 5 minutes the screen i was working shut down and on the monitor some vertical lines appeared - and nothing else. I thought it was the OS, so i rebooted the pc and while it was booting i realized the monitor didn't show the bios info etc, but the same vertical lines on the whole screen were on it, sometimes their color was changing and they were blinking, but no screen appeared - only those vertical lines. After a day, the monitor was ok again - i turned it on and no there were no lines, everything was working fine. The same for the next 2 days. My question is: If anyone had ever had the same problem, can you help me ? THe monitor may be ok now but i am afraid it can get back those lines again. I don't know what to do, if you know please tell me whether should i take it to the service or not. Thank you.

• Multi-Finger Gestures in 14.04

  I'm running 14.04 on a Lenovo Y500. I want to get multi-touch gestures running, specifically a three-finger swipe to switch desktops. I would like to keep using the Unity interface, so I can't use touchegg, and I have a buttonless touchpad, so easystroke is not a good candidate either. Is there another third party program that will allow me to use buttonless three finger gestures, or some config hack that will accomplish the same thing?

• Acer makes monitor go to power safe mode unless in safe mode

  I have an acer aspire x3200 Monitor says no input signal (go to power safe mode) I was only able to use computer in safe mode The computer was on (power safe mode) for two weeks. The monitor is ok with another desktop I tried with a different monitor, same message (monitor goes to power safe mode) Why is this happening and if it's my video card probLem will I be able to replace the video card and solve it? • Rotate monitor to portrait on Windows Server 2003 with ATI card

  Does anyone know if it is possible to rotate a monitor from landscape to portrait mode on Windows Server 2003 32-bit with an ATI video card? According to Dell's site, I should be able to rotate my Dell P2310H monitor by installing drivers from their website, but they don't have drivers for Windows Server 2003. I let Windows Update search for the driver (with the driver CD that came with the monitor in my drive) and it did install drivers, but I still don't see any options for rotating. Some people say that the ATI Catalyst Control Center allows for monitor rotation, but I've never been able to run that software on Windows Server 2003. A google search reports that others have the same problem. Has anyone successfully figured out how to rotate a monitor on Windows Server 2003 with an ATI card?

• Monitor weirdness/flickering with new Viao PCG-3112L

  I have a Sony VAIO PCG-3112L running Windows 7. It worked fine on one monitor, but now I'm using it with a 2 year old LG Flatron W2252TQ-TF. The colors are sorta off (although that might just be the monitor), but more annoyingly there are many horizontal flickering lines. It's more noticeable on non-white backgrounds. I tried rebooting the monitor, and reseting it to factory settings, but that didn't solve the issue. What could be the cause of this? The monitor works fine with an Asus netbook. I have checked that both ends of the VGA cable are plugged in between the Vaio and the monitor.

• Monitor "forgot" its native resolution overnight

  I have: Hanns G HW173A monitor NVIDIA GTX 460 graphics card Windows XP SP3. It was working. Suddenly overnight I can no longer use my monitor's native resolution of 1440x900. It's not listed, and if I force it it only shows part of the screen. The only resolution that seems to fit the whole screen is now 1024x768. I have tried reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers as well as disabling and enabling the monitor drivers (for windows XP the monitor uses the microsoft "default monitor" drivers - this is what Hanns G says on their website too). Any ideas? Thanks very much.

• How do I maximize a window in one monitor and do other things on the other monitor

  Hi, I have windows 7 installed on my laptop which is a Dell studio XPS 16. I recently set up a second monitor for it. I've noticed that when I load up "full maximisation" applications (I don't know the term) like a game or media center on one monitor, I can't seem to do anything with the other monitor. With the game, I can see the other monitor, I can play a movie on it even, but if I click the mouse button on it, it'll stop the game and alt-tab away. In Media Center, I can't even cross my mouse over the other monitor. So my question is, in Windows 7, is it possible to run programs like this that are designed to be run in one maximised window and still be able to do things on the other window?

How this happened - I accidently hit my leg on the laptop and jammed it against the wall and ever since the monitor is like this .I plan to replace the Monitor by buying a spare parts laptop that sells in ebay . I wonder if this is a LCD HARDWARE problem or problem with the cable that goes to the monitor . • Dialogs appear on wrong monitor with SQL Server Management Studio 2008

  I am running SSMS 2008 on Windows 7 with a dual monitor setup (one large, one small). SSMS is running on the secondary monitor, but everytime a dialog is opened, the dialog is placed on the primary monitor instead. I've tried moving the dialog over, closing it, and then re-opening it, but it doesn't remember and goes back to the primary monitor. This is really annoying for some of the designer dialogs, is there any way to fix this other than switching SSMS to the primary monitor? Is this a known bug with SSMS, or is it a problem with my particular setup?

• DVI monitor detected only on computer startup

  I've recently connected a new monitor, LG M2252D-PZ, to a rather outdated computer with Windows XP and Radeon 9600. XP has SP3 installed, video drivers are the latest version back from the times the video card was still supported. My problem is that the monitor works fine only as long as I don't turn it off or switch it to a different input. When I turn it back on, it says "no signal". The key to the problem must be the DVI port, to which the new monitor is connected. The previous monitor was connected to the VGA output, and I've tested that the new one also works fine when connected to the analogue port. Apparently, the computer tests for the presence of a monitor on the DVI port only on startup. The question is, how do I change this?

• Multi-tenant ASP.NET MVC - Views

  Part I – Introduction Part II – Foundation Part III – Controllers   So far we have covered the basic premise of tenants and how they will be delegated. Now comes a big issue with multi-tenancy, the views. In some applications, you will not have to override views for each tenant. However, one of my requirements is to add extra views (and controller actions) along with overriding views from the core structure. This presents a bit of a problem in locating views for each tenant request. I have chosen quite an opinionated approach at the present but will coming back to the “views” issue in a later post. What’s the deal? The path I’ve chosen is to use precompiled Spark views. I really love Spark View Engine and was planning on using it in my project anyways. However, I ran across a really neat aspect of the source when I was having a look under the hood. There’s an easy way to hook in embedded views from your project. There are solutions that provide this, but they implement a special Virtual Path Provider. While I think this is a great solution, I would rather just have Spark take care of the view resolution. The magic actually happens during the compilation of the views into a bin-deployable DLL. After the views are compiled, the are simply pulled out of the views DLL. Each tenant has its own views DLL that just has “.Views” appended after the assembly name as a convention. The list of reasons for this approach are quite long. The primary motivation is performance. I’ve had quite a few performance issues in the past and I would like to increase my application’s performance in any way that I can. My customized build of Spark removes insignificant whitespace from the HTML output so I can some some bandwidth and load time without having to deal with whitespace removal at runtime.   How to setup Tenants for the Host In the source, I’ve provided a single tenant as a sample (Sample1). This will serve as a template for subsequent tenants in your application. The first step is to add a “PostBuildStep” installer into the project. I’ve defined one in the source that will eventually change as we focus more on the construction of dependency containers. The next step is to tell the project to run the installer and copy the DLL output to a folder in the host that will pick up as a tenant. Here’s the code that will achieve it (this belongs in Post-build event command line field in the Build Events tab of settings) %systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\installutil "$(TargetPath)" copy /Y "$(TargetDir)$(TargetName)*.dll" "$(SolutionDir)Web\Tenants\" copy /Y "$(TargetDir)$(TargetName)*.pdb" "$(SolutionDir)Web\Tenants\" The DLLs with a name starting with the target assembly name will be copied to the “Tenants” folder in the web project. This means something like MultiTenancy.Tenants.Sample1.dll and MultiTenancy.Tenants.Sample1.Views.dll will both be copied along with the debug symbols. This is probably the simplest way to go about this, but it is a tad inflexible. For example, what if you have dependencies? The preferred method would probably be to use IL Merge to merge your dependencies with your target DLL. This would have to be added in the build events. Another way to achieve that would be to simply bypass Visual Studio events and use MSBuild.   I also got a question about how I was setting up the controller factory. I’m utilizing assembly scanners in StructureMap as a simple way to pull in DLLs that are not in the AppDomain. Remember that there is a dependency on the host in the tenants and a tenant cannot simply be referenced by a host because of circular dependencies.   Tenant View Engine TenantViewEngine is a simple delegator to the tenant’s specified view engine. You might have noticed that a tenant has to define a view engine. public interface IApplicationTenant { .... IViewEngine ViewEngine { get; } } The trick comes in specifying the view engine on the tenant side. Here’s some of the code that will pull views from the DLL. protected virtual IViewEngine DetermineViewEngine() { var factory = new SparkViewFactory(); var file = GetType().Assembly.CodeBase.Without("file:///").Replace(".dll", ".Views.dll").Replace('/', '\\'); var assembly = Assembly.LoadFile(file); factory.Engine.LoadBatchCompilation(assembly); return factory; } This code resides in an abstract Tenant where the fields are setup in the constructor. This method (inside the abstract class) will load the Views assembly and load the compilation into Spark’s “Descriptors” that will be used to determine views. There is some trickery on determining the file location… but it works just fine.   Up Next There’s just a few big things left such as StructureMap configuring controllers with a convention instead of specifying types directly with container construction and content resolution. I will also try to find a way to use the Web Forms View Engine in a multi-tenant way we achieved with the Spark View Engine without using a virtual path provider. I will probably not use the Web Forms View Engine personally, but I’m sure some people would prefer using WebForms because of the maturity of the engine.   How MySQL databases logged and monitored on ubuntu servers in real time?. I checked /var/log/mysql.log and found it empty. EDIT 1: The log was not enabled in the mysql configuration file. Now it logs and I could see the logs in the file /var/log/mysql/mysql.log But this could not be sufficient to gather additional information about the database logs. Is there any other way or any popular open source tool?

• Make one monitor act like two, split in half

  Context: Ubuntu 11.10, Unity Let's say I have a screen at resolution 1000x500. What I'd like to do is split the screen down the middle so [Unity or X or ?] acts as if there are two displays (each of 500x500). Examples: Unity will display a different toolbar (the top one) on each side of the display. If I maximize a window on the left side of the screen, it will fill the left side only. If I maximize on the right, it will fill the right. If I hit "fullscreen" in youtube (flash) or Chrome or Movie Player, it will only fill the side of the display that it's on. If it's really is impossible to do this with Unity, will it work with Gnome3 and how? A million thanks!

BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) (initramfs) alll thought the above problem was solved my issue now is..when i booted my pc again after this solving this to solve the above problem i had pressed e in the grub menu then corrected the partition then after starting i did sudo grub-update then i made some automatic update updates then in next reboot......my screen had gone blank .... and i am not even able to see bios screen....in the start ...the monitior just stays blank..................i have even tried disconnectiong my hard disk but still not able to get the display......solution required ....urgently.....

• After suspend, my monitor wont turn back on

  I set my pc to suspend after 5 minutes of inactivity, when I return to my computer I mash a couple of keys and the pc turns back on and the drives start spinning etc etc, but I get no signal to either of my monitors. My peripherals are powered as the num/caps lock lights turn on and off. I should add I have two monitors, I have the same problem on both. As I am writing the last line from my previous paragraph keeps disappearing. I press control z and it comes back but kinda weird. Thanks in advance for any help :)

• Monitor screen size and programming ease

  I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous? This may be subjective but any professional opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated!

• Ubuntu dual monitor set up - taskbars appear on other monitor

  I'm trying to get my TV (connected via HDMI cable) to act as a second monitor to watch video etc. The TV is to my left, so in Display Preferences I unticked "Mirror Screens" and put the monitors like this: -------- ---------- | PC | | TV | | | ---------- -------- When I do this, the PC monitor comes up with just the desktop wallpaper and the interface - taskbar and windows, etc - moves to the TV screen. But if I swap the monitors around, the taskbars are still on the TV screen, with the windows (and desktop icons) on the PC screen. Is there a way to set the computer monitor as the main one and the TV as the second screen? PC: Dell Inspiron 531 Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 720N TV: Philips 26PFL5522D LCD TV

  I just purchased an Asus VG248 monitor (supports 144Hz refresh rate) and I can not increase the monitor's refresh rate beyond 60Hz from Windows. My system setup: 2x AMD 6990 graphics cards 1x Asus VG236 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #1 (120Hz) 1x Asus VG248 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #2 (60Hz) Does anyone know why I can not set the new monitor to a higher refresh rate?

• Mouse click-focus wanders in vmPlayer 3.0 dual-monitor

  Previously, a WinXPSP3 session running on a WinXPSP3 host computer ran perfectly fine in a dual monitor setup. No issues with vmPlayer 2.x. BEFORE updating to vmPlayer 3, the following problem cropped up. When clicking in a single monitor, you would get exactly what you expected. However, when the display was stretched across two monitors, the clicking would be to the left of the mouse cursor. The farther RIGHT you were, the farther left the click would occur. In other words, if you clicked on the system menu of a window in the upper left of a window on the left monitor, you would get the system menu. Move half a screen to your right and the click would be on an item about a quarter of the way over, rather than where you were clicking. And by going all the way to the far right of the right monitor, you could bring up a right-click menu on the far right of the LEFT monitor. I Hope I have described this properly. It's confusing, even in words. In single monitor mode, everything works perfectly fine. If, instead of using either UltraMon or DisplayFusion, you run a single desktop across both monitors (3200x1600), there are no mousing issues. Unfortunately, having two 1600x1200 monitors, that depth of 1600 makes that hack less than useable. My graphic card won't offer anything resembling 3200x1200. vmPlayer 3.0 did not alleviate the situation. The microsoft mouse drivers are up to date and so are the nVidia card drivers. Any ideas?
