• How to create a vector of lists in R?

  Hi, I have a list (tmpList), which looks like this: $op [1] "empty" $termset $termset$field [1] "entry" $termset[[2]] $termset[[2]]$explode [1] "Y" This is a list with a list inside. If I add this list to a vector theOneVector = c(theOneVector, tmpList) Now the resulting vector is of the length 2, because the first entry ("op") of the list is separated from the tmpList. Is it possible to append the complete tmpList into this vector? I already tried it with theOneVector = c(theOneVector, list(tmpList)) which gives a vector with the length of 1, but it is very cumbersome to access the elements of the list with this extra list around the list. (Too much list in one sentence I think.) Any help would be appreciated, Martin

• How can I include platform-specific native libraries in the .JAR file using Eclipse?

  Hello all, I am just starting to learn JNI. I have been following a simple example, and I have created a Java app that calls a Hello World method in a native library. I'd like to target Win32 and Linux x86. My library resides in a DLL, and I can call it just fine using LoadLibrary when the DLL is added to the root of my Eclipse project. However, I can't figure out how to get Eclipse to export a runnable JAR that includes the DLL and the .SO file for Linux. So my question is basically; how would you go about creating a project in Eclipse and include several versions of the same native library? Thank you, Martin

• Delphi TerminateThread equivalent for Android

  I have been discussing a problem on the Indy forums related to a thread that is not terminating correctly under Android. They have suggested that there may be an underlying problem with TThread for ARC. Because this problem is holding up the release of a product a work around would be to simply forcibly terminate the thread. I know this is not nice but in this case I cant think of a side effect from doing so. Its wrong but its better than a deadlocked app. Is there a way to forcibly terminate a thread under Android like TerminateThread does under windows? Martin

  Hi All, I have the this bit of code in a VBA class which is to workout the number of days between a property of the class (a date) and today’s date. Can anyone see why this would be giving an error in a class? I have referenced atpvbaen.xls. Edit: I have found that when I run the code through a menu option I have created on the menu bar it fails, but when I run it via a button or through the VB Editor it works fine.   Hello everybody, i've started to introduce myself into REST. I use as REST-framework Restlet. I have defined a resource with methods for the GET with several response formats like @Get("xml") @Get("json") I now want to test my defined response-formats with my browser, but I don't know which parameter I have to specify in my URL to get the format. Something like: http://localhost:8182/members?type=xml I've tried some param-names, but I couldn't find the right param-name. I know that there must be such a parameter, because I've seen it already in an URL, but i forgot the name and couldn't find it in the net. How is the name of this parameter when using restlet? I would be pleased, if somebody can help me, thanks, Martin

• PHP Retrieve Cookie which was not set with setcookie

  I have the following problem - a third party software is setting a cookie with the login credentials and then forward the user to my app. I now need to retrieve the cookie values: The problem is - I can do this easily in the Frontend/AS3 with var ticket : String = CookieUtil.getCookie( 'ticket' ).toString(); but in PHP, the cookie is not within the $_COOKIES array. The cookie values are: Name: ticket Domain: .www.myserver.com Path : / Send for: encrypted connections only Expires: at end of session The one I see, and set before in PHP is: Name: myCookie Host: www.myserver.com Path : / Send for: any type of connection Expires: at end of session Actually, since host/domain are both the same, it should be visible in the PHP script, since it is running on this domain.   Hi there, I'm a (complete) php noob and need a little help with something. I'm working on a project whereby a user can select up to 6 categories via a form (I'm using ExpressionEngine). The output is like this: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3" ...and so on. The user can select up to 6 categories on that form. What I need: even if my result is 3 categories I need to have 6 'cells' - for want of a better word - even if they're empty: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3","","","" I've tried this: <?php $str = '(output goes here)'; print_r(explode(',', $str, 6)); ?> ...but the output give me: Array ( [0] => Cat1 [1] => Cat2 [2] => Cat3 [3] => [4] => [5] => ) How do I get from that to this: "Cat1","Cat2","Cat3","","","" Does this make sense? I know that there are some applications (task managers), but I would like to write my own, simple application. I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them.   I have a YUI Treeview that allows selection with checkboxes. After some operations, I destroy the tree (with tree.destroy()), and then create a new tree using the same containerID. This new tree should allow selection using checkboxes, but does not. What could be causing this?

  I'd like to know why most Banks or Financial companies prefer Oracle than other RDBMS for their core systems (the absolutely minimum features that a Bank must support). I found a few answers that didn't satisfy me. For example: Oracle has more features. But features for what? Can't you implement that in application level if you were not using Oracle? Could someone please describe a bit more technical but still on high-level overview of what the bank needs and how Oracle would solve it and the others can't or don't have the features yet? I came from the web-app (web 2.0) crowd who normally hear news about MySQL, PostgreSQL or even key-value/column-oriented storage solution. • Graphics.FromHwnd(IntPtr.Zero) returns null, why?

  I'm currently investigating a problem with a 3rd party component (DevExpress) in my application. My issue is quite similar to this one DevExpress KB article. I get the same exception with more less the same stacktrace. So I used .NET Reflector to find out, what may be null in this scenario, and the only object which is a candiate to be null is Graphics. This is created with Graphics.FromHwnd(IntPtr.Zero). Because I don't have a broad knowledge about GDI, I would like to know if somebody can tell me possible scenarios when this may return null... I tried to reproduce it in a scenario where windows is out of GDI handle's, but then I'm getting a "out of handles" - exception at least once, which is not the case in the issue I'm investigating tia, Martin

  Hey there! I'm having a bit of trouble here and I was hoping someone throws me a hint :) I'm getting some GET VARS with JS but I have trouble with non-latin charsets: cyrillic for example. The cyrillic var appears correct in the url but when I retrieve it with JS I get some dummy string. I was wondering of a function similar to "unescape" for such a case. Alternatively, if someone knows a way I could convert a cyrillic string to the same dummy string I get from the URL, it will still do me the trick, since all I need is compare. :) Thanks! Martin

• Handling data update/freshness issue in web-app in general (or GWT specifically)

  In general, how do you guys handle user update/data freshness interaction with the user (UI issue) in web-apps? For example: Multi-users web-app (like project management) Login to a "virtual" space People can update project names, etc How to handle a situation such that: user-A and user-B load a project with title "Project StackOverflow" user-B updates the title to "Project StackExchange" user-A updates the title after user-B update operation to "Project Basecamp" The question I'm asking is from the user perspective (UI) and not about transactional operation. What do most people do in this situation? What would you do after user-B updates the title in user-A screen/view? What happened when user-A tries to update the title after user-B finished his/her update operation? do you inform user-A that the title has changed and he/she has to reload the page? do you go ahead and change the title and let user-B has old data? Do you do some sort of application-level "locking" mechanism? (if someone is updating, nobody else can?) Or fix the application workflow? (who has the access to be able to change things, etc). What would be the simplest solution, but at the same time not annoy the user with more dialog/warning messages. I've encountered this particular problem frequently in a GWT app specifically where domain models are being passed around and refreshing the whole app/client-side isn't the optimal solution in my mind (since it means the whole "loading"/initialization phase must be executed again in this specific environment). Maybe the answer is to stay away from GWT? :) Love to hear options, solutions, and advises from you guys. Thanks

• Disable a style in VCL application

  I am adding the a VCL style into my application but am also giving the users an option to turn this off but I cannot figure out how to do this globally at runtime. Setting "TStyleManager.AutoDiscoverStyleResources := false" almost works but it pops up with an error message saying "Style {style set} not found" but after dismissing the message does exactly what I want. This code I would expect to work but does not... if (not ParamObj.UseDarkStyle) then begin //TStyleManager.AutoDiscoverStyleResources := false; TStyleManager.SetStyle(TStyleManager.SystemStyle); end; I also tried (originally) TStyleManager.TrySetStyle('Windows'); but this also does not work. • QML 5.3 iOS compilation of pure QML app

  I have an application written in QML. Initially, I used the standard C++ bootstrap for the app. int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { QApplication app(argc, argv); // A bunch of components and data models written in C++ QQmlApplicationEngine engine; engine.load(QUrl(QStringLiteral("qrc:///main.qml"))); return app.exec(); } The bulk of the app is in QML and the more I work with QML, the happier I am with it and the more I feel comfortable converting the C++ pieces to QML. So, it comes to one risk that I wanted to ask about. If I convert the app to a pure QML application like the kind generated by the Qt Quick UI application wizard with no C++ and designed to be run with qmlscene will I be able to compile it for iOS when the time to port it comes or will I end up just converting it back to the C++ loader form? TL;DR Can pure QML (no C++) apps be compiled and run on iOS devices?

• VirtualBox - multiple guests, each with a single bridged adapter?

  I am running a dedicated server (located at Hetzner, Germany) that runs VirtualBox in order to virtualize several services accross multiple virtual guests. Those guests are supposed to communicate with each other (for instance, a virtual web server has to access a virtual database server); to be reachable from the dedicated server (for instance, SSH access); and to access the Internet via the dedicated server (for instance, to download security updates) Currently, this is achieved by having host-only adapter vboxnet0 on the dedicated server and two virtual interfaces on each guest. There, virtual adapter eth0 is attached to vboxnet0 (to achieve (1) and (2)), virtual adapter eth1 is attached to VirtualBox' NAT (to achieve (3)). Via eth0, the guests have access to a DHCP and a DNS server, both running on the dedicated server (there, bound to vboxnet0). This allows me to assign custom IP addresses and names. Via eth1, VirtualBox pushes a proper route that enables each guest to access the Internet (via eth0 on the dedicated server). This setup with two virtual adapters frequently leads to problems and at leasts complicates many things. For instance, on the dedicated server there is OpenVPN which allows to access the virtual machines via the Internet; futhermore, there is Shorwall that controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic between the Internet, the dedicated server, and the individual virtual machines. Not to mention automatic installation of servers via PXE... Therefore, I would prefer to have only one single virtual adapter on each guest which would be used for both incoming and outgoing connections. As far as I understand, one would basically use a bridged interface for that very purpose. Now the question arises: Which interface on the dedicated server would the bridge use? eth0 on the host server is not an option, as this is prohibited by the provider. A virtual interface eth0:0 would not make any sense, as a bridge always uses a physical interface (eth0 in this case). Would it be possible to create a bridged interface in each virtual machine that would "dangle in the air"? Thus, without a complement on the dedicated server? How would I have to set up the routing on the host server? Please note that the host / dedicated server has only one network adapter (eth0) which is connected to the provider's network. • Mandatory Parameters in Request object (WCF)

  lHi, I'm currently writing a WCF service. One of those methods get's a request object and returns a response object. In the request there are a couple of value-type members. Is there a way to define members are mandatory in the declarative way? I'm in an early stage of development and I don't want to start with versioning now. In addition I don't want to have method sig with 25 parameters, therefore I created the request object. The problem I have is that due to the value-types, I can never be sure if the consumer of the service intended to have the default value in there, or it was just by lazyness. On consumer side you don't easily detect that you probably missed that property. So I would like to have something that forces the caller of the service to provide an value, and if not he ideally get's a compile-time error. any ideas? tia, Martin

• Managing inverse relationships without CoreData

  This is a question for Objective-J/Cappuccino, but I added the cocoa tag since the frameworks are so similar. One of the downsides of Cappuccino is that CoreData hasn't been ported over yet, so you have to make all your model objects manually. In CoreData, your inverse relationships get managed automatically for you... if you add an object to a to-many relationship in another object, you can traverse the graph in both directions. Without CoreData, is there any clean way to setup those inverse relationships automatically? For a more concrete example, let's take the typical Department and Employees example. To use rails terminology, a Department object has-many Employees, and an Employee belongs-to a Department. So our Department model has an NSMutableSet (or CPMutableSet ) "employees" that contains a set of Employees, and our Employee model has a variable "department" that points back to the Department model that owns it. Is there an easy way to make it so that, when I add a new Employee model into the set, the inverse relationship (employee.department) automatically gets set? Or the reverse: If I set the department model of an employee, then it automatically gets added to that department's employee set? Right know I'm making an object, "ValidatedModel" that all my models subclass, which adds a few methods that setup the inverse relationships, using KVO. But I'm afraid that I'm doing a lot of pointless work, and that there's already an easier way to do this. Can someone put my concerns to rest?

• Simplest way to use a DatagridView with Linq to SQL

  Hi, I have never used datagrids and such, but today I came across a simple problem and decided to "databind" stuff to finish this faster, however I've found that it doesn't work as I was expecting. I though that by doing something as simple as: var q = from cust in dc.Customers where cust.FirstName == someString select cust; var list = new BindingList<Customer>(q.ToList()); return list; Then using that list in a DataGridView1.DataSource was all that I needed, however, no matter how much I google, I can't find a decent example on how to populate (for add/edit/modify) the results of a single table query into a DataGridView1. Most samples talk about ASP.NET which I lack, this is WinForms. Any ideas? I've came across other posts and the GetNewBindingList, but that doesn't seem to change much. • Which data structure for List of objects + datagrid wiev

  Hi, I have to develop a code which will store a list of objects, as example below 101, value 11, value 12, value 13 ...etc 102, value 21, value 22, value 23 ...etc 103, value 31, value 32, value 33 ...etc 104, value 41, value 42, value 43 ...etc Now, the difficulty is, that first column is an identifier, and whole table should always be sorted by it. Easy access to each element is required. Additionally, list should be easily updated, and extended by adding element at the end as well as in front and still keep being sorted by first column. Finally, I would like to be able to display values of the above in datagridview. What is most important is a performance of the implementation, as rows will be updated many times per second, and datagridview should be able to display all changes immediately. I was thinking about creating class for the values, and then a Dictionary but encountered a problem with displaying values in gridview. What would be the most optimal way of implementing the code? My webservers are 2 single NIC lighttpd and one dual nic lighttpd. server1 in this example is running squid on port 80 and lighttpd on port 8080 (just to test) Requirements: All 3 webservers running lighttpd should be balanced two option for load balancing: Best would be if server1 is busy server2 takes over, if server2 is busy server3 takes over, etc.. Round robin style evenly distributed load. Eg server1 takes first call, server2 second etc.. All requests should be treated the same way (no url rewriting or so on) Sent host headers have to be redirected to every server as http host header, speaking of "server1", "server1.company.internal" and "10.211.1.1". Only if the first server is killed in any way the second will take over. I have seen the others working at some point, but definitely not as the intended load balancing described above. If the cache_peer_access is not defined sometimes the wrong hostname is sent to the backend webserver and this always depends on the defaultsite= parameter. Probably because the host header on the request to squid is not set and its replaced by defaultsite. Leaving out defaultsite didnt solve the problem. The only workaround i found for this is the current approach with cache_peer_access. Questions: Does the cache_peer_access influence the round-robin? Is there a better workaround to pass the host header to the backed webservers? Which parameters do increase the speed of load balancing or does anyone have a better approach? -Martin
