  • What if you could work on anything you wanted?

    This week we've downed our tools and organised ourselves into small project teams or struck out alone. We're working on whatever we like, with whoever we like, wherever we like. We've called it Down Tools week and so far it's a blast. It all started a few months ago with an idea from Neil, our CEO. Neil wanted to capture the excitement, innovation, and productivity of Coding by the Sea and extend this to all Red Gaters working in Product Development. A brainstorm is always a good place to start for an "anything goes" project. Half of Red Gate piled into our largest meeting room (it's pretty big) armed with flip charts, post its and a heightened sense of possibility. An hour or so later our SQL Servery walls were covered in project ideas. So what would you do, if you could work on anything you wanted? Many projects are related to tools we already make, others are for internal product development use and some are, well, just something completely different. Someone suggested we point a web cam at the SQL Servery lunch queue so we can check it before heading to lunch. That one couldn't wait for Down Tools Week. It was up and running within a few days and even better, it captures the table tennis table too. Thursday is the Show and Tell - I am looking forward to seeing what everyone has come up with. Some of the projects will turn into new products or features so this probably isn't the time or place to go into detail of what is being worked on. Rest assured, you'll hear all about it! We're making a video as we go along too which will be up on our website as soon. In the meantime, all meetings are cancelled, we've got plenty of food in and people are being very creative with the £500 expenses budget (Richard, do you really need an iPad?). It's brilliant to see it all coming together from the idea stage to reality. Catch up with our progress by following #downtoolsweek on Twitter. Who knows, maybe a future Red Gate flagship tool is coming to life right now? By the way, it's business as usual for our customer facing and internal operations teams.   • "Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL..." error when developing for Facebook Open Grap

    Chrome (or any other webkit browser) throws a ton of these "Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL..." when working with the Facebook Open Graph API. It doesn't interfere with actual operation, but it does make the javascript console basically unusable. I'd like to know if there is a way to suppress warnings in the console? Or if there are other solutions you guys can think of, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    Hi, Just starting with ASP.Net MVC and have hit a bit of a snag regarding validation messages. I've a custom validation attribute assigned to my class validate several properties on my model. When this validation fails, we'd like the error message to contain XHTML mark-up, including a link to help page, (this was done in the original WebForms project as a ASP:Panel). At the moment the XHTML tags such as "< a ", in the ErrorMessage are being rendered to the screen. Is there any way to get the ValidationSummary to render the XHTML markup correctly? Or is there a better way to handle this kind of validation? Thanks

    I have a checkboxlist of categories, during an update, I am trying to delete all the items in list from the associate table, then insert them all (so I don't have to determine if an item already exists in the associate table and only insert newly checked items).   • ASP.NET MVC Class level custom data-annotation and ModelState keys

    Hi, I have custom class level validation attribute, inheriting from ValidationAttribute, on my model. How come it doesn't register a key in the ModelState when its IsValid is false? I can see the the error message in the ModelState.Values collection, but the ModelState.Keys collection only shows an empty string "". Can I provide a key for it - presumably this is because its not assigned to a property? I wanna be able to use ModelState.Remove in my controller to remove this error upon a certain condition, but I have no Key! Any ideas?

  • Installing mysql on leopard: "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket"

    I migrated to a new machine and used migration assistant to copy across my files (which seemed to copy across the DBs) but I had to use macports to install Mysql (whereas last time I compiled from source via Dan Benjamin's guide). For some reason, mysql is intermittently throwing the following error; Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) It does this no matter what I try, which has included setting the socket in /opt/local/etc/mysql5/my.cnf.   • Certificate Trust Lists and IIS7

    I need to generate a CTL for use with IIS7. I generated a CTL file using MakeCTL (on Win2k3 SDK) and put only my own RootCA certificate in the CTL. However, when I then use adsutil.vbs to set my website to use this CTL, I get: ErrNumber: -2147023584 (0x80070520) Error Trying To SET the Property: SslCtlIdentifier I'm using adsutil.vbs like this: cscript adsutil.vbs set w3svc/2/SslCtlIdentifier where is the friendly name of the CTL The problem is, I am not able to set a friendly name. At the end of the wizard it says "Friendly Name: ". In IIS6 I can create a CTL with a friendly name (showing in Certificates MMC) but if I export it from there, when I import it, it no longer has a friendly name. Can anyone show me how to do it please?

Since I upgraded Windsor, I now get the following exception at runtime: Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.TypeLoadException: GenericArguments[0], 'T', on 'MyApp.Models.Repositories.Linq.BasicRepository`1[TEntity]' violates the constraint of type parameter 'TEntity'.     I have a WPF app with a usercontrol that contains a HwndHost. The HwndHost is created as follows: hwndHost = CreateWindowEx(0, "static", "", WS_CHILD | WS_VISIBLE, 0, 0, hostHeight, hostWidth, hwndParent.Handle, (IntPtr)HOST_ID, IntPtr.Zero, 0); hwndControl = CreateWindowEx(0, "Static", "", WS_CHILD | WS_VISIBLE | WS_CLIPCHILDREN , 0, 0, hostHeight, hostWidth, hwndHost, (IntPtr)PICTUREBOX_ID, IntPtr.Zero, 0); I then hook into the message pump using HwndSourceHook and loads of messages come through. Except the ones I want i.e. WM_MOUSEMOVE, WM_MOUSEHOVER, WM_LBUTTONDOWN and WM_LBUTTONUP Also the OnMouseLeftButtonDown event is not fired in the WPF code on the main window or the control, I assume because windows is trapping it and throwing it away. Anybody know how I can get these to come through, either with or without using the WIN32 window messages?
