  I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s3100n and I cannot for the life of me get the wifi to connect and stay connected in any circumstances with network manager or wicd... I'm pulling my freaking hair out with this, and I can't get a dang thing down AT ALL... switching to wicd didn't work, putting my password in the connections editor didn't work... nothing at all is working... everything that everyone else is saying to me is chinese and I really just want my pc to work... please help... I will provide any information needed to help me with this. just instruct me on how to find that information. Don't pass this question by without helping me please... I'm so frustrated...

• OpenVPN is installed but it is not an avaliable option in the network manager

  I have installed and used openVPN once before in a previous install of Ubuntu 12.04. I have since reformatted, and now after reinstalling openVPN it will not show up in the network manager. I am trying to setup my VPN connection and the only option I have to choose from is PPTP. EDIT: I have Gnome Shell and KDE installed as well, Gnome being my primary. I cannot find OpenVPN in either Gnome or Unity, however I can add it without an issue in KDE. Not really an acceptable workaround, but it works for now. I would still like to be able to do it in GTK based desktops as well.

• Network manager indicator missing

  I recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04. My first attempt failed, and I received an error stating that not all of the required packages were downloaded. Before (successfully) attempting again, I noticed that there was no longer a networking indicator in the upper panel. The indicator did not reappear with the installation of 12.04. To be clear, my wireless connection has experienced no problems, despite the missing indicator. Here are the solutions that I have found which did not work for me: Editing /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and replacing [ifupdown] managed=false with =true. Reinstalling network-manager (via apt-get install --reinstall). I am currently running 12.04 on an Asus Eee PC 1005 HA, and I am new to seeking solutions through forums, so I apologize if I have neglected to provide some vital information about my hardware.

• Content Manager Assistant PSVita Linux Does NOT Recognize USB Port

  I have an external copy of Windows 7 alongside Quantal and I installed Content Manager Assistant on it. I was able to start the program successfully by finding the Executable file of the program in the program folder in Windows and run it in Wine, however Wine didn't recognize my PSVita that was connected through one of my USB ports. Is there any way to configure WINE to properly recognize the Vita? Content Manager Assistant is a Windows and Mac only program that allows you to transfer files between your PC and PSVita, kinda like iTunes for iPod.

  Ok, the thing is this I tried asking many times on few ubuntu forums how to deal with my non-responsive Update Manager, but all I was getting was the same stuff (run it from the terminal, run some lines, apt-get update blah blah). Nothing was helping. Eventually I went mad Windows style and tried to simply uninstall it and install it again. The problem is - how to install it again? Can't do it through Software Center, can't really build a package (because I'm too stupid to do that). And I seriously want to avoid reinstalling the whole system. I am running a 12.04 verison (Update Manager was unable to update to a newer one) Please help. I am furious with this thing.

  Ever since I upgraded to 13.10, the software updater does not show all the available updates. Some will appear and can be installed just fine, but once it claims that all software is up to date, using sudo apt-get upgrade shows that there are still more packages waiting to be updated. I can update them via the command line, but that only solves things temporarily. I'm not sure why some show up and others don't. How can I make Update Manager update all packages?   Every time one plugs in the same usb wireless adapter in a new usb port, Windows creates new network device with auto-generated sequence number which looks like this Wireless-N USB Network Adapter #2, Wireless-N USB Network Adapter #3, ... The name of a device is being displayed as part of network's information in Control Panel|Network Connections. How can I get rid of this sequence number? I found out device name which is displayed in network's information is kept in the FriendlyName REG_SZ value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\VID_[device specific string]\[usb port specific string] However when I try to modify this value I get error Cannot edit FriendlyName: Error writing the value's new contents. I tried to delete extra keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\VID_13B1&PID_0029 but got Cannot delete KEY NAME: Error while deleting key. error. Trying to solve this problem I followed this answer but trying to change owner with Replace owner on subcontainers and objects option checked I got this error - Registry Editor could not set owner on the currently selected, or some of its subkeys. To find out which subkey is the source of problem I tried changing owner of each subkey. After successfully changing owner of Properites subkey I saw it has subkeys which were previously hidden. Now trying to change owner of these subkeys looks like this: Any idea how to delete these keys?

• Network Manager Applet menu freezes and does not respond

  Since the latest update in Ubuntu 10.10, the nm-applet has started doing some strange things. I boot up the PC, all is fine, internet works, etc... but after a period of time, approx and hour, the nm-applet menu in the Gnome panel fails to respond. when I click on the icon, the menu appears, all looks well, but when I select any option, eg DISCONNECT, nothing happens. Even the VPN sub menu disappears (no triangle to select the menu.) However I do not lose the network connection... If I Run this script: killall nm-applet /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart nm-applet all returns as normal, for a while... weird? i tried uninstall/reinstall... I even reinstalled Ubuntu, but once the latest updates are applied this issues arises... Any help?

In recovery mode I figured out the problem: NetworkManager hung trying to connect to a wireless network that wasn't available anymore, and so I couldn't reach the prelogin level. Anyway: I really don't like that the pc connects to a network before the user logging in. How is it possible to disable it?

  I'm trying to connect my desktop and laptop using an ethernet connection. I usually configure network from the command line but this time I decided to give Network Manager a try, so I went to Network Connections, and selected manual IP configuration. At first I left the default gateway field blank, since I don't need a default gateway. Turned out network manager doesn't let me save the connection unless I enter that field, but entering a phony gateway messes up with my Internet connection. Anyway to do this setup?

  I recently upgraded Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 only to find out that it won't connect to any network, neither wired nor wireless and the graphics is messed up too as in a low screen resolution. For 12.04, my system was running perfectly. I don't know why upgrade messed it up so bad. Reinstalling the OS is an issue because I have set up a lot of development environments that I cannot afford to set it up again. • Manager keeps changing requirement specification after every demo.

  Background of my working environment My manager has no background or understanding of computers or software whatsoever. It is highly likely he hasn't seen code in any form (not even from a physical distance of 10 feet or less) in his life. There is no one who understands the complexity of what I am asked to implement. To the point that if I semi-hardcode no one would know. On Joel's test we score an unbelievable score 0. The problems The manager and at times other "senior" keep changing the requirement specification. Changes which, if good engineering be done and not patchy "fixes", require change in the underlying design. There is absolutely no one who looks at code (probably because no one knows how to, or even if it should be done) which means no one will ever be able to: Appreciate the complexity of the problem or the elegance of the solution. Suggest improvement to the approach. Appreciate the quality of the code. Point out where the code can be improved. A lot of jargon is used which makes sense grammatically but fails to make any sense any other way. Doesn't feel, behave or work like a software company. The question What should be done? Especially regarding there being no one who would point out improvements in my code. Update To answer HLGEM's (and possibly others) question about what I've done to try and fix it. I offered to set up Redmine and introduce source control to everyone. I said I would recommend distributed (git or mercurial) but will also talk about centralized ones and let the team decide. Response was that things are being done and will be done within weeks. Haven't seen that nor am I aware if other parts of the company use it.

Funny thing is, that worked fine and I was able to successfully download and install software from the software center, so it seems that only update manager can't access the repositories. I have searched for and found similar cases (relating to ubuntu 12.10), but most of those cases involved ppa's, and I don't use any ppa's. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would like to delete, edit VHD's and other files, copying them from the network, changing the names and adding to the manager)? Are there any other boot managers that I can use to boot up Windows 7 and 2008 from VHD file? I would like to have flexibility similar to virtualization w/o performance hit and ability to use all 4 processors on the server (using Windows HPC Server).

  HI i had just got my wifi to work properly in 12.04 and I got a pop up from update manager saying there was 100's of updates I needed to install so i installed them it then said I needed to reboot which I did but now my wifi isn't working I go add a new connection and I have no wifi option just Ethernet also the pci card is showing no signs of life (the green light is not light) but when i go in to terminal and type lspci it is showing my wifi card in the list whats gone wrong and how do i fix it???
