  • Is there an easy way to read Blu-ray discs on Windows?

    Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to media (mostly photographs and movies through DLNA). My father asked me if he could read Blu-ray discs on it, so I bought a Blu-ray reader, but I can't find a software to do the playback. I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-ray disc), but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parents do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for Blu-ray discs), but so far I had no luck. Is there software that would solve my issues? It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one.

I read that it won't work unless you use proxies or a VPN, so I was wondering if its possible for me to setup a VPN to my network in the US instead of paying a service like StrongVPN? Setup: Router in US - Airport Extreme Router abroad - D-link (not sure of model) I know that the AppleTV doesn't have a built-in VPN client, maybe eventually when its jailbroken there will be an app, but as of now I'll have to use the routers right? Any other ideas are welcome as well!

  • What is an efficient algorithm for randomly assigning a pool of objects to a parent using specific rules

    I need some expert answers to help me determine the most efficient algorithm in this scenario. Consider the following data structures: type B { A parent; } type A { set<B> children; integer minimumChildrenAllowed; integer maximumChildrenAllowed; } I have a situation where I need to fetch all the orphan children (there could be hundreds of thousands of these) and assign them RANDOMLY to A type parents based on the following rules. At the end of the job, there should be no orphans left At the end of the job, no object A should have less children than its predesignated minimum. At the end of the job, no object A should have more children than its predesignated maximum. If we run out of A objects then we should create a new A with default values for minimum and maximum and assign remaining orphans to these objects. The distribution of children should be as evenly distributed as possible. There may already be some children assigned to A before the job starts. I was toying with how to do this but I am afraid that I would just end up looping across the parents sorted from smallest to largest, and then grab an orphan for each parent. I was wondering if there is a more efficient way to handle this?

  • Many to many self join through junction table

    I have an EF model that can self-reference through an intermediary class to define a parent/child relationship. I know how to do a pure many-to-many relationship using the Map command, but for some reason going through this intermediary class is causing problems with my mappings. The intermediary class provides additional properties for the relationship. See the classes, modelBinder logic and error below: public class Equipment { [Key] public int EquipmentId { get; set; } public virtual List<ChildRecord> Parents { get; set; } public virtual List<ChildRecord> Children { get; set; } } public class ChildRecord { [Key] public int ChildId { get; set; } [Required] public int Quantity { get; set; } [Required] public Equipment Parent { get; set; } [Required] public Equipment Child { get; set; } } I've tried building the mappings in both directions, though I only keep one set in at a time: modelBuilder.Entity<ChildRecord>() .HasRequired(x => x.Parent) .WithMany(x => x.Children ) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); modelBuilder.Entity<ChildRecord>() .HasRequired(x => x.Child) .WithMany(x => x.Parents) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); OR modelBuilder.Entity<Equipment>() .HasMany(x => x.Parents) .WithRequired(x => x.Child) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); modelBuilder.Entity<Equipment>() .HasMany(x => x.Children) .WithRequired(x => x.Parent) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); Regardless of which set I use, I get the error: The foreign key component 'Child' is not a declared property on type 'ChildRecord'. Verify that it has not been explicitly excluded from the model and that it is a valid primitive property. when I try do deploy my ef model to the database. If I build it without the modelBinder logic in place then I get two ID columns for Child and two ID columns for Parent in my ChildRecord table. This makes sense since it tries to auto create the navigation properties from Equipment and doesn't know that there are already properties in ChildRecord to fulfill this need. What SQL query would you use to SELECT all items in the table along with their depth where the depth of an item is the sum of all parents and grand parents of that item.   • Keep only a subtree of the DOM tree

    On BBC articles, such as this one, there is a DOM element with class story-body, deep in the DOM chain. I want to hide all DOM element "outside" of this (unique) DOM element. The problem is that I can't just do $('*').hide(); $('.story-body'); because I need to make sure to keep the parents, grand-parents, etc. of story-body. I also can't do $('*').hide(); var current = $('.story-body').show(); while(current = current.parent()) { current.show(); } because that would simply show everything. Any suggestions?

Users have things like logins, passwords, e-mail addresses, avatars, etc. But there are two types of Users that will be using this site, let's say Parents and Businesses. I need to store some different information for the Parents (e.g. childrens' names, domestic partner, salaries, etc.) than for the Businesses (e.g. industry, number of employees, etc.), but also some of it is the same, like logins and passwords.     I have a general question about inheritance in the .NET framework, lets say you have 2 classes, the first is called Parent and the second is called Child. Child inherits from Parent. Parent wants to ensure that each instance of child executes a specific piece of code when it loads irrespective of whether the child has their own onLoad code explicitly specified. From my experience, if i handle onLoad in the parent and not in the child, the parents onLoad code will fire but if its handled in both classes only the child's code will fire. Is this correct? and if so how can i ensure the parents code will always fire for the child...

    Hi, can JDO fetch all children of a database model at once? Like: class Parent { @Persistent(mappedBy="parent") private Set<Children> children; } class Children { @Persistent private Parent parent; @Persistent private String name; } In my case, I have a large number of Parents which I fetch at once. Accessing their children then takes a lot of time because they are fetched lazily. Does JDO (Datanucleus) support their fetching at once, togehter with the Parents? I also tried to fetch all Children independantly with another quey and put them into the Level2 cache afterwards, but still they are fetched (maybe jdo doesn't know about their relationship? Because the ForeignKey (parent-id) hasn't been fetched at first?) Any ideas how to read the data structure faster? Cheers, Jan

    Hi, If I have a parent and child modelled relationship. How to I select the parent, and some of the child rows. I cannot seem to do it, and load the parent object. var query = ( from parent in Parents.Include("Children") from child in parent.Children where child.Date == parent.Children.Max(x => x.Date) select parent); the problem is that the parent is returned multiple times, not the parent with the children loaded. Is there any way to populate each of the parents, and include the child rows, but only the ones needed. If I try and navigate again, I get all the children, not just the ones with the latest date.   • jQuery: How to stop propagation of a bound function not the entire event?

    I have a click function bound to many elements. It is possible that sometimes these elements may sit within one another. So, the click event is bound to a child and also bound to its parent. The method is specific to the element clicked. Naturally, because of event bubbling, the child's event is fired first, and then the parents. I cannot have them both called at the same time because the parents event overwrites the event of the child. So I could use event.stopPropagation() so only the first element clicked receives the event. The problem is that there are other click events also attached to the element, for example, I am using jQuery's draggable on these elements. If I stop the propagation of the click event, then draggable doesn't work, and the following click events are not called. So my question is: Is there a way to stop the event bubbling of the method the event will call and not the entire event?

    For some reason, firefox seems to ignore my scrollTo function even though it works in chrome and safari.     Hi, I'm trying to calclulate the best way to delete a node in a family tree. First, a little description of how the app works. My app makes the following assumption: Any node can only have one partner. That means that any child a single node has, it will also be the partner nodes child too. Therefore, step relations, divorces etc aren't compensated for. A node always has two parents - A mother and father cannot be added seperately. If the user doesn't know the details - the nodes attributes are set to a default value. Also any node can add parents, siblings, children to itself. Therefore in law relationships can be added. I basically want Derived to use the Base's metaclass without me having to explicitly set it so.

  • Updating the collections of entities with NHibernate the correct way

    A simple question regarding how NHibernate works: I have a parent entity that has a collection of other child entities. Those child entities have a reference to the parent entity they belong to. Now I want to implement an Add method to the parent entity that would add a child to it. Should that Add method only add the child to its new parents collection, or should it also update the parent reference of the child or should it also remove the added entity from its previous parents collection? Do I have to do all these things in that method or will NHibernate do something for me? Thanks.

  • Indie Software Developers - How do I handle taxes?

    I apologize if this is the wrong site to post on, perhaps someone could point me to the proper place if it is not. Hello, I am 17 years old and currently develop applications/games for Android and iPhone as well as develop internet websites and code a variety of my own projects. I have been very fortunate and have made a large amount of money and continue to make money online to the point where I do not need a stable job, though I'd like to get one after college. I've never held a job anywhere, and have never had to pay taxes. I'm coming into a lot of issues and I am quite confused. I get money from MANY sources- 15 different advertisement networks(!), 4 different payment processors, 5 different affiliate networks and a variety of other sources. All of them pay to different places and at different times (checking account, PayPal, reloadable debit card, ect.) I essentially have a list in a Notepad with names and login information for each source. I have also created a PHP script that uses cURL to grab all the revenue from each service, add it all up, then text me every few hours so I can keep track. It's a mess, but it's working OK, and I can create custom reports (for IRS?). But enough of that, my questions are about taxes in the US, and how indie developers handle it all. I'm at slightly over $250k so far this year, with negligible earnings last year. I have it all stockpiled in a bank account and haven't touched it, I'm a bit scared to. What do I file as? A sole proprietor, a business, just a regular person? How can I handle all of the different revenue sources? (AdSense, CJ, LinkShare) So far none of them have sent me any paperwork on taxes and I've read that I'm supposed to pay taxes quarterly? Do I need paperwork from EACH source to file? Or can I just say I got $x total and that'd be it? What percentage do you pay of total earnings? Average? Should I create an LLC? A corporation? Or stay as a developer? What would be the cheapest options? Could I go to jail? I haven't touched the money except a few dollars to help my parents pay the mortgage once. Any insight would be great. My parents have no idea what I should do, both have no forms of higher education and both have no high school diploma's. They just live day by day with simple jobs. I appreciate any help or experience with this.

    If you have kids and macs and you use Parental Controls, for the moment don't upgrade to 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, the feature is broken after upgrading. I had to disable parental control completely on my daughters' macs in the meantime... After hundreds of parents have complained about problems in this discussion thread on Apple's forums, finally the tech press notices:  First There Was Apple's MapGate, Now Welcome ParentGate For the moment there doesn't seem to be a workaround. Ugh.
