• Python iterator question

  I have this list: names = ['john','Jonh','james','James','Jardel'] I want loop over the list and handle consecutive names with a case insensitive match in the same iteration. So in the first iteration I would do something with'john' and 'John' and I want the next iteration to start at 'james'. I can't think of a way to do this using Python's for loop, any suggestions?

• FIREFOX UNRESPONSIVE

  As my laptop hard rive was knackered i was adivsed to use ubuntu, it set-up perfectly. but i tried downloading google chrome and flash player because i couldnt watch any videos and now FIREFOX has become unresponsive. It says ' firefox is already running but it is not responding. To open a new window, you must firstr close the exisitng firefox process or restart your system I tried restarting but hasn't worked. Ubuntu also asked me if i wanted to do a update which i did, could this be a problem also. Need help desperately going insane James

• No SQLCompact Edition Support IN VS 2013

  Firstly apologies if this is a poor question - I am an engineer not a programmer. I have spent time moving from Visual Basic to C#. I have started C#/SQL tutorials. I have noticed VS 2013 has stopped supporting the compact edition database normally used for standalone desktop apps. Somebody has kindly written a plugin to re-implement support. I have also noticed a belief circulating that SQLite is to replace the compact edition. Would anybody be able to advise if this was accurate - I am slightly confused as to which database is best suited for desktop app development inside VS 2013. Any comment greatly appreciated. • Fn keys for Brightness not working on Toshiba Satellite L755

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I love it! The only problem is the keys for my brightness, F6 and F7, does not work when I am on battery power or AC power. It randomly works after I am idle for a while and log back in. The other weird thing is to see my battery indicator, I need to toggle my touch pad button that is right above the actual pad on and off for it to show up, and then back on so I can use my touch pad, obviously. The only other Fn buttons that work on my laptop is the button to mute (F1) Touch pad on and off (F9) and Fn+3 and Fn+4 for my volume. The only Fn buttons that I care if they work again are my brightness, which again, are F6 and F7. Thanks! James

• How do I prevent a ManyToManyField('self') from linked an object to itself?

  Consider this model (simplified for this question): class SecretAgentName(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=100) aliases = ManyToManyField('self') I have three names, "James Bond", "007" and "Jason Bourne". "James Bond" and "007" are aliases of each other. This works exactly like I want it to, except for the fact that every instance can also be an alias of itself. This I want to prevent. So, there can be many SecretAgentNames, all can be aliases of each other as long as "James Bond" does not show up as an alias for "James Bond". Can I prevent this in the model definition? If not, can I prevent it anywhere else, preferably so that the Django Admin understands it?

• Good 3D Game Engine for the Horror Genre [on hold]

  I am starting to think about and design (pencil drawings) a simple, horror game. I'm in need of a good engine which supports features like Dynamic Lighting (for a characters flashlight) and dynamic shadows. My first choice was obviously Unity3D, as its free and is (supposedly) the easiest to use. However, I believe that a lot of features are locked for the Pro version (a $1500 investment). Is there any good, free engines that support dynamic events? I have read a lot of posts recommending the Source engine but I don't want to make a mod, I would like to make a fully featured standalone game. I'm not looking for opinions on "Which engine you prefer" or "Which engine do you use", all I would like is to be presented with the facts. -James

• Ripping MP3s in Rhythmbox Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit)?

  I installed a couple of days ago Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit). I today tried ripping a CD in the MP3 format. However, whenever I try to rip, it says it is missing an extra multimedia plugin "Gstreamer extra plug-ins (i386)". I then try to install the :i386 version of the gstreamer-ugly plugins, but then I get the same problem but with the id3-demuxer (or something similar) The Terminal output I get from both problems (but replace the "MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder" with the "ID3-demuxer" name) is: james@clefairy:~$ rhythmbox (rhythmbox:24122): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed Rhythmbox-Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox|MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder|encoder-audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1, layer=(int)3 /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/constants.py:24: Warning: g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed import gobject._gobject It doesn't help that each time I have to install/remove the entire Gstreamer-ugly collection each time - I can't find that specific file. The CD plays fine, it's the ripping plugin that doesn't seem to work. I didn't have this problem previously on 12.04 (64 bit).

• HP 6735s Brightness hotkey problem; where is brightness panel?

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop hp 6735s. The screen is often too dark and i want to make it brighter, although the hotkeys Fn+F7/F8 are not working. I have tried some things: Firstly it appears that sometimes they are in fact working, after reboot they either work and continue to do so or they don't. I've read about a brightness applet; but where can i find or install it? I have tried some grub options; acpi_osi=Linux and acpi_backlight=vendor but nothing changes. I don't want to add another question but since it might be related: my laptop also gets quite hot, i'm having doubts whether ubuntu connects to the available sensors and cooling plans (or how does it work???); sensors (or psensor) only shows 2 sensors both named temp1. Any help is greatly appreciated! Paul

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site? • Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!! • fedora12, yum not releasing "lock" after performing an action

  Hello, This problem has been occurring quite frequently recently and I can't seem to find a way of preventing it. I need a query in oracle which will retrieve a list of the oldest person in each family, but not older than a certain age. • Ruby gems gone after after jruby install

  Today I installed jruby by downloading it, extracting it to /home/james/jruby-1.4.0 and adding the following line to .bashrc export JRUBY_HOME=/home/james/jruby-1.4.0 export PATH=$JRUBY_HOME/bin:$PATH And then I installed some jruby gems via jruby -S gem install ... Jruby works fine, but this seemed to have cause two problems: 1) When I try to run a ruby (not jruby) on rails migration, I see: Missing the Rails gem. Please `gem install -v= rails`, update your RAILS_GEM_VERSION setting in config/environment.rb for the Rails version you do have installed, or comment out RAILS_GEM_VERSION to use the latest version installed. 2) when I do gem list --local, I only see the gems that I've installed for jruby. Launching web applications via ruby script/server succeeds without any warnings. Please help.

• Have loaded a php variable into flash but cant apply it in a function...

  hi I have created an actionscript function which stops an animation on a specific frame which works fine. I have then loaded in a php file with a variable which will contain the number for the frame i want the animation to stop on. • Craftsmanship Tour: Day 3 &amp; 4 8th Light

  Thursday morning the Illinois public transport system came through for me again. I took the Metra train north from Union Station (which was seething with inbound commuters) to Prairie Crossing (Libertyville). At Prairie Crossing I met Paul and Justin from 8th Light and then Justin drove us to the office. The 8th Light office is in an small business park, in a semi-rural area, surrounded by ponds. Upstairs there are two spacious, open areas for developers. At one end of the floor is Doug Bradbury’s walk-and-code station; a treadmill with a desk and computer so that a developer can get exercise at work. At the other end of the floor is a hammock. This irregular office furniture is indicative of the 8th Light philosophy, to pursue excellence without being limited by conventional wisdom. 8th Light have a wall covered in posters, each illustrating one person’s software craftsmanship journey. The posters are a fascinating visualisation of the similarities and differences between each of our progressions. The first thing I did Thursday morning was to create my own poster and add it to the wall. Over two days at 8th Light I did some pairing with the 8th Lighters and we shared thoughts on software development. I am not accustomed to such a progressive and enlightened environment and I found the experience inspirational. At 8th Light TDD, clean code, pairing and kaizen are deeply ingrained in the culture. Friday, during lunch, 8th Light hosted a ‘lunch and learn’ event. Paul Pagel lead us through a coding exercise using micro-pomodori. We worked in pairs, focusing on the pedagogy of pair programming and TDD. After lunch I recorded this interview with Paul Pagel and Justin Martin. We discussed 8th light, craftsmanship, apprenticeships and the limelight framework. Craftsmen advance their skills by learning from each other, and I can’t do that working at home by myself. The challenge is finding the right team, and becoming a part of it.

• Back home :-)

  Wrote this entry last night in the ICE from Stuttgart to Munich but the conncetion broke: 28.5 hour journey - and close by now. Actually I would have been even closer if our TGV wouldn't have had break problems as soon as we had entered German territory. And you don't want a train which goes up to a speed of 200 mph having issues with its breaks, right? So we missed the connection in Stuttgart but I've catched the last train this night towards Munich. Distance approx 1900 km all together. Usually it takes 2.5 hours with a direct flight with Air Lingus from Munich or a bit more when you'll go through Zurich or Frankfurt. But at least you meet more people and see a bit more from the landscapes passing by :-) Except for the break problem everything worked out well so far (I'm no there finally!). I had 4 hours to change in Paris from Gare de Nord to Gare de l'Est and one thing I really have to point out: the people working for SNCF, the French National Railways, were so organized and helpful, purely amazing. I asked the man at the counter where I had to pick up my prepaid tickets for directions to Gare de l'Est - and after we had a chat about Marlene Dietrich he just grabbed his iPhone, started Google Earth and showed me the way to walk. I pretty sure it's a stupid stereotype that people in Paris or France are so unfriendly to foreigners if they don't speak French. In my past 3 stays or travels to Paris in the past 2 years I had only great experiences. And another thing I really enjoy when being in France: the food!!! The sandwich I had at the train station was packed with yummy goat cheese. And there's always Paul. You might ask yourself: Who the heck is Paul? That's Paul - or actually their website. And at Paul's they serve usually excellent fruit tartes - and this time a nice Gateau Au Chocolate. And very good Cafe Cremé as well :-) That's actually the positive part traveling this way: the food you'll get is much better than the airline food - if your airline still serves something called food ...

  There are so many events and sessions to attend at JavaOne, it's unfair to ask people to choose just one thing they liked, but here are some favorite moments: I loved meeting many open source contributors and friends I have not met in person before and seeing that projects like e.g. Hudson are alive and kicking and have a great future ahead of them. -Manfred Moser My "The Problem with Women" session. It had LOADS of interactivity from the audience, who really helped to make that session.  I came out if it with a real sense of optimism - we love our jobs, we love what we do, and we should be proud of telling everyone about it to attract different talent into the industry. (Read her blog JavaOne: The Problem With Women - A Technical Approach for details.) -Trish Gee My kudos to Oracle for making the presentation materials quickly available to the public. Some of them were already available during JavaOne. Lots of slide decks are already there, and in some cases you may even find the video recordings too. Go to http://www.oracle.com/javaone and select JavaOne Technical Sessions.  -Yakov Fain I loved that not only was James Gosling present at the Community Keynote (which felt more like the keynotes of old times [big space, big screens, fun and tech]) but he was also found wandering the halls of the Hilton the day prior. Bring back James! Add back the toys section in the Community Keynote. Let the t-shirt tossing begin anew. These are "small" things that really fire up the community. -Andres Almiray Seeing James Gosling at JavaOne was a real shot in the arm for Java.  He needs to be there every year. -Frank Greco +42 on having James and the T-shirt tossing. -Stephan Janssen The session "Integrate Java with Robots, Home Automation, Musical Instruments, and Kinect." I believe it really helps to increase community participation! There were lots of interesting talks, and great discussion with JUG leaders and members.
