• Windows CE Remote Kernel Tracker - gathering data in one (more) file during a log period of time

  I'm using the "Windows CE Kernel Tracker" tool to gather data from my embedded device. This is working fine for short period of time. It seems that the tool is getting data in memory and not on disk. I'm wondering if there is a way to take the data from the device and log it in one or more file on my development computer. This could be useful for long time test period : for instance, one night or one entire day. Any ideas? p.s. I don't want to log on to the device, I want to log on my development PC.

  I have a set of data that is periodic (but not sinusoidal). I have a set of time values in one vector and a set of amplitudes in a second vector. I'd like to quickly approximate the period of the function. Any suggestions? Specifically, here's my current code. I'd like to approximate the period of the vector x(:,2) against the vector t.   It seems as though whenever I take an extended break from programming—whether to pursue other interests or simply because I fall out of the habit for a while—I invariably find that when I return to a project and set to coding, I come with an abundance of new ideas, novel approaches, and just plain better code. It may be because I have a lot of other creative interests besides programming, and my mind likes to find correlation and crossover between them, so while I'm doing one thing, in the back of my mind I'm usually also applying it to another. So what's your experience? Do you ever return from a break (whether intentional or not) feeling not only refreshed, but also somehow noticeably improved? Is it actually the norm?

• Do you believe it's a good idea for Software Engineers to have to work as Quality Assurance Engineers for some period of time?

  I believe it is. Why? I've encountered many Software Engineers who believe they are somehow superior to QA engineers. I think it may help quench this belief if they do the job of a QA engineer for some time, and realize that it is a unique and valuable skill-set of its own. The better a Software Engineer is at testing their own programs, the less cost in time their code incurs when making its way through the rest of the software development life-cycle. The more time a Software Engineer spends thinking about how a program can break, the more often they are to consider these cases as they are developing them, thus reducing bugs in the end product. A Software Engineer's definition of "complete" is always interesting...if they have spent time as a QA engineer maybe this definition will more closely match the designer of the software's. What do you all think?

  While I was renewing a domain of mine with a well-known domain registrar, the support person who was on call with me said that I'd improve the SEO ranking of my domain if I increased the registration length from 1 year to 5 years instead. The explanation that he gave me was something along the lines that a search engine like Google doesn't like to send users to domains and businesses that may no longer exist, and that by registering my domain for 5 years instead of just 1, Google would have higher confidence that I'm serious about keeping my business around for the long-term. Needless to say, I was quite skeptical. Does the registration/renewal length of a domain name affect its SEO and search result ranking for search engines such as Google?

I plan on mostly storing things in Google Drive, so other than wearing out the flash drive, are there any risks involved?

It works, but it's constrained to watch's granularity. inotify sounds good... but no information of the application accessing the file is provided. auditd may be useful, but I haven't checked that yet. What ways can I see which applications have accessed a certain file within a given time period?

  Contrary to this SO question this is for a dotted name (gw.localnet.au), and it doesn't happen straight away. Only after some period of time (quite a long time, possibly days). In fact this is for my ADSL router and its internal IP address which I have named within the router itself and in my Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller DNS Service. Specifically, localnet.au is a Active-Directory-backed primary domain. In fact, an ipconfig /flushdns may fix the problem, but only after a while (about the time it took me to type in this question :-) ). That doesn't explain the root cause though... • How to collect the performance data of a server during an unreachable/down period using Nagios?

  Some time services and host stop responding due to a poor server performance. I mean, if for some reason (could be lot of concurrency services access, a expensive backup execution on the server or whatever that consume tons of server resources) a server performance is very degraded, that could lead that the server isn't capable to establish any "normal network communication" (without trigger whatever standards timeouts defined for such communication). Knowing host's performance data (cpu, memory, ...) in case of available during that period (host is not down and despite of its performance degradation still allow plugins collect performance data) could be very useful for sysadmin to try to determine what cause the problem, or at least, if the host performance was good and don't interfered at all in the host/service down. This problem could be solved using remote active (NRPE) or remote passive (NSCA) if such remote solutions could store (buffered) perf data to be send to central Nagios server when host performance or network outage allow it. I read the doc of both solutions and can't find any reference to such buffer mechanism neither what happened in case that NSCA can't reach Nagios server. Any idea of how solve this lack of info? so useful for forensic analysis. EDIT: My questions isn about which tools I can use to debug perf problems or gather perf data to analysis, but is about how collect (using Nagios) host perf data even during a network outage for its posterior analysis (kind of forensic analysis). The idea is integrate such data to Nagios graphers like pnp4nagios and NagiosGrapther. I know that I could install tools like Cacti in each of my host, and have a kind of performance data collection redundancy, but I really want avoid that and try to solve all perf analysis requirements with one tools: Nagios

For instance, if I copy "SomeUtility.zip", there will also be copied a hidden ".SomeUtility.zip" file. I consider these OS X dot-files as useless turds of data as far as the rest of my network is concerned, and don't want to leave them on my Windows file server. The problem is: in some Browsers the DEL and '.' (period sign) have the same key Code 46. So is there a better logic to filter the function keys or must i write a condition for that case, maybe removing the 46 from the array and try to convert it to char and if is (.) let it go to the Regex function if not let it pass? The other question will be are there more shared Key Codes in some browsers? EDIT: My suggested solution wont work because it doesn't matter which key the user pressed (DEL or period) i always get (.) as CHAR at least on OPERA and FF =(.

  Hi there, we've had a ASP.NET web application deployed for a number of years now.... last week we migrated to a slightly slower server to save some money. Now we're frequently getting command timeouts: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding This is understandable in that a slower server will take longer to produce results; take longer time and produce a timeout. Is there any system-wide way to get SqlClient to set a longer timeout? We cannot change the code, as it's everywhere... we're using multiple data access technologies as well. Maybe there's a default command timeout setting on a connection string? We just need to increase it by 30 seconds; we're happy to wait a bit longer for queries to return. thanks
