• Release Notes for 5/31/2012

  Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve moved the pull request creation UI from a modal dialog to a full page to make room for more context on what you’re sending with your pull request. In this week’s changes, you’ll see the list of commits; look for diffs to appear in the coming weeks. Corrected several issues where the line that had comments associated was not being properly differentiated in the code snippet previews on pull request discussions. Corrected an issue where pull request line comments would not appear to be associated with the proper line of code. Fixed an issue where accepting pull requests was not working properly. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue where code snippets could not be inserted using Opera. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer displayed an error message when browsing the site using https. Fixed an issue where the CAPTCHA was not displaying properly on the Contact User page. Fixed an issue where paging was not working properly in the “Recent Release in Followed Projects” sections for logged in users. Other Updated the activity stream to no longer auto-load new items when scrolling down.   Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We added diff previews to the pull request creation page so that you have more context in the pull request that you’re creating. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue that prevented users from downloading files if they were using an ad blocker browser plug-in. Fixed an issue that caused harmless error messages to appear when pushing changes using Git. Fixed an issue where visiting the project openings search results would result in a non-functional search box. Fixed an issue where projects would break if users attempted to publish the project with an empty description. Known Issues The formatting of tabs on pull requests has disappeared. • Mac Quick Look Preview in an NSView or NSImage?

  I am looking for a way (public or otherwise) to get an NSView, NSImage, CGImageRef, etc that shows the QuickLook preview for a file. Essentially the equivalent of QLThumbnailImageCreate() but for the preview. The public APIs I can find do not support this. They allow the creation of a thumbnail image or a QLPreviewPanel. The panel does in fact display the quick look preview, but I cannot get access to the preview's appearance to embed it in other views, nor can I display multiple previews at once. For background, I am writing an app where users can embed links to other files that should be displayed inline, kind of like an <img> tag in HTML. For images like JPGs and PDFs it's easy to figure out what to display. I thought that for other formats I would use Quick Look to generate a nice visual representation of the file's contents. This way the set of formats supported by my application would be easily extensible (just download new Quick Look generators).

• Coerce Windows to show a thumbnail for my custom file type.

  Hi, I want to use the windows OpenFileDialog class in C# to browse files for my application. I would then like the files to show up with previews in Windows' "thumbnails" view. Is there a simple way to make this happen? I'm thinking there should be a way to encode the files so that Windows simply reads and displays the thumbnail information, even though it's an unsupported file type? I know Windows Vista has a different interface (IThumbnailProvider as opposed to IExtractImage) than Windows XP, but I need it to work across platforms. Thanks! / Jakob

• FTP in NetBeans 6.1

  Is there an FTP browser hiding away in NetBeans 6.1? The help manual doesn't even suggest FTP exists. All I've been able to find so far is a tree viewer in the Services panel (no edit controls) and the ability to upload projects, folders and specific files from the Projects/Files views. Is there anywhere to delete or rename or will I have to keep switching back to my browser? I can see from the previews that there's a nice FTP controller in 6.5 but I'm not desperate enough to completely convert to a beta (yet).

• Chrome Extension: How to display tab objects?

  I am in the process of designing an extension for Google Chrome that helps to organize tabs (I know, there are many that already exist; that doesn't matter). I wish to open a popup window that will display tabs as objects (i.e., in the same way that it is displayed in the tab bar at the top of the browser). One way of doing this would be to pull various details (ID, Title, URL, etc.) from each tab, create a class and make instantiations of it upon the opening of each tab using these data, but this seems rather convoluted considering that what I want is sitting right there in the tab bar. Is there any simpler way to achieve this? In addition, I have seen several apps that utilize page previews. Is there something in the API that allows direct access to these?

• How can I integrate graphs and JPEG images with RAVE Reports?

  I really love RAVE Reports in creating multiple reports especially with formulas and accounting systems... but recently I am having problems with integrating JPEG Pictures and Graphs with my newly Delphi Language developed Little ERP System. I bought some JPEG Components but it seems problematic. I also experienced some irregularities with my RAVE Reports now. When I run my program then try to preview some reports, it seems to be running fine, but when I close the program, the EXE file is still in the taskbar. I need to ctrl-alt-delete first for me to use Report Previews normally. If I don't, RAVE REPORT ERROR message will appear everytime I click the PRINT button; it says "STREAM READ ERROR" even though I used to "FreeAndNil" to free the memory stream when Report Preview Form closes. When I tried to run the My Applications without previewing RAVE reports, the program closes perfectly. Any suggestions and recommendations will be an enormous help. Thank you.

  So I have a DOM document that looks essentially like this <categories> <category id="1"/> <category id="2"/> </categories> This is how the document previews in Firebug, as I would expect. However, when I POST this to the server, I get <categories> <CATEGORY id="1"/> <CATEGORY id="2"/> </categories> Indeed, doc.documentElement.firstChild.nodeName returns "CATEGORY". The nodes are added using jQuery.append('<category/>'). Why are the child tags returned in all caps?

• Single click to activate last tab in windows 7 internet explorer (like FF)

  Windows 7 annoyance: the jump lists are fine for hovering over the taskbar items, great go ahead and show me previews of all the open instances and maybe I'll pick the exact one I want. However this works different between IE and FF. Hovering over the FF icon just shows me the single FF window, not any of the tabs I have open. Clicking it means my FF window opens and I'm at the last tab I was on. Great, normal behavior, one click and I'm in. Hovering over the IE icon shows me all the tabs in my single IE window. Ok, but I just want to go back to my last active IE tab. I can't! I am forced to click twice to go back to any IE tab. Sure it's a minor annoyance, but as I'm developing throughout the day I find it more and more annoying. Any ideas to fix so I can just click the IE taskbar icon once and it pulls up the last tab I was on?

• When not to use a Drupal node?

  I've recently created a very simple CRUD table where the user stores some data. For the data, I created a custom node. The functionality works great for creating, editing, and deleting data in the CRUD table using the basic node functionality (I'm actually amazed how fast and easy it was to program the basic functionality with proper access controls using only a tiny bit of code).... Since the data isn't meant to be treated the same way as 'content' such as a blog post (no title, no body, no commments, no revisions, shouldn't show up on ?q=node page, no previews, no teasers, etc)... I find that I'm spending most of my time 'turning off' and modifying the stuff that drupal does automatically for nodes. I know its a matter of taste, but where should one draw the line on what should be treated as a node and what shouldn't? In other words, would it be better to program this stuff from scratch without using nodes?

• Using AWS S3 for photo storage

  I'm going to be using S3 to store user uploaded photos. Obviously, I wont be serving the image files to user agents without resizing them down. However, not one size would do, as some thumbnails will be smaller than other larger previews. So, I was thinking of making a standard set of dimensions scaling from the lowest 16x16 to some highest 1024x1024. Is this a good way to solve this problem? What if I need a new size later on? How would you solve this?

  I’m happy to announce that the final release of ASP.NET MVC 2 is now available for VS 2008/Visual Web Developer 2008 Express with ASP.NET 3.5.  You can download and install it from the following locations: Download ASP.NET MVC 2 using the Microsoft Web Platform Installer Download ASP.NET MVC 2 from the Download Center The final release of VS 2010 and Visual Web Developer 2010 will have ASP.NET MVC 2 built-in – so you won’t need an additional install in order to use ASP.NET MVC 2 with them.  ASP.NET MVC 2 We shipped ASP.NET MVC 1 a little less than a year ago.  Since then, almost 1 million developers have downloaded and used the final release, and its popularity has steadily grown month over month. ASP.NET MVC 2 is the next significant update of ASP.NET MVC. It is a compatible update to ASP.NET MVC 1 – so all the knowledge, skills, code, and extensions you already have with ASP.NET MVC continue to work and apply going forward. Like the first release, we are also shipping the source code for ASP.NET MVC 2 under an OSI-compliant open-source license. ASP.NET MVC 2 can be installed side-by-side with ASP.NET MVC 1 (meaning you can have some apps built with V1 and others built with V2 on the same machine).  We have instructions on how to update your existing ASP.NET MVC 1 apps to use ASP.NET MVC 2 using VS 2008 here.  Note that VS 2010 has an automated upgrade wizard that can automatically migrate your existing ASP.NET MVC 1 applications to ASP.NET MVC 2 for you. • New HTML 5 input types in ASP.Net 4.5 Developer Preview

  Microsoft has released developer previews for Visual Studio 2011 and .Net framework 4.5. There are lots of new features available in the developer preview. One of the most interested things for web developers is the support introduced for new HTML 5 form controls. The following are the list of new controls available in HTML 5 email url number range Date pickers (date, month, week, time, datetime, datetime-local) search color Describing the functionality for these controls is not in the scope of this article. In the page I placed on Text box control from the toolbox Now select the control and go to the properties pane, look at the TextMode attribute. Now you can see more options are added here than prior versions of ASP.Net. I just selected Email as TextMode. I added one button to submit my page. The screen shot of the page in Visual Studio 2011 designer is as follows See the corresponding markup <form id="form1" runat="server">     <div>         Enter your email:         <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server" TextMode="Email"></asp:TextBox     </div>     <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Submit" /> </form> Now let me run this page, IE 9 do not have the support for new form fields. I browsed the page using Firefox and the page appears as below. From the source of the rendered page, I saw the below markup for my email textbox <input name="TextBox1" type="email" id="TextBox1" /> Try to enter an invalid email and you will see the browser will ask you to enter a valid one by default. When rendered in non-supported browsers, these fields are behaving just as normal text boxes. So make sure you are using validation controls with these fields. See the browser support compatability matrix with these controls with various browser vendors. ASP.Net 4.5 introduced the support for these new form controls. You can build interactive forms using the newly added controls, keeping in mind that you need to validate the data for non-supported browsers.

• Super-Charge GIMP’s Image Editing Capabilities with G’MIC [Cross-Platform]

  Recently we showed you how to enhance GIMP’s image editing power and today we help you super-charge GIMP even more. G’MIC (GREYC’s Magic Image Converter) will add an impressive array of filters and effects to your GIMP installation for image editing goodness. Note: We applied the Contrast Swiss Mask filter to the image shown in the screenshot above to create a nice, warm sunset effect. To add the new PPA open the Ubuntu Software Center, go to the Edit Menu, and select Software Sources. Access the Other Software Tab in the Software Sources Window and add the first of the PPAs shown below (outlined in red). The second PPA will be automatically added to your system. Once you have the new PPAs set up, go back to the Ubuntu Software Center and do a search for “G’MIC”. You will find two listings available and can select either one to add G’MIC to your system (both work equally well). Click on More Info for the listing that you choose and scroll down to where Add-ons are listed. Make sure to select the Add-on listed, click Apply Changes when it appears, and then click Install. We have both shown here for your convenience… When you get ready to use G’MIC to enhance an image, go to the Filters Menu and select G’MIC. A new window will appear where you can select from an impressive array of filters available for your use. Have fun! • Add a Sleep Timer to Windows 7 Media Center

  Do you make it a habit of falling asleep at night while watching Windows Media Center? Today we are going to take a look at the MC7 Sleep Timer for Windows 7 Media Center. This simple little plugin allows you to schedule an automatic shutdown time in Media Center. Note: At this point MC7 Sleep Timer doesn’t work with extenders. If you’re using ClamAV or Panda it may detect this plugin as a virus, we’ve tested it and this is a false positive for these two antivirus apps. Installation and Usage Download and install MC7 Sleep Timer. (See download below) After the installation is finished, you will find MC7 Sleep Timer located in the Media Center Extras Library. Click on the tile to open the timer and configure your settings. The MC7 Sleep Timer will open in full screen mode. You can choose to shutdown the PC after 30 or 60 minutes, create a custom length shutdown timer at any 5 minute interval, or select the exact time you want the PC to shutdown.  After setting your PC to shutdown, you’ll get an audio confirmation. To set a custom timer length, scroll to the “Custom timer” option and click right or left on your Media Center remote or, the right or left arrow keys, to choose how many minutes before shutdown. To schedule a shutdown for a certain time, browse to the “Shutdown at time” button, and scroll right or left with the arrow keys on the keyboard or remote. When you’ve chosen your time, hit “Enter” on the keyboard or “OK” on the remote.   Clicking the “Monitor Off” button will turn off only the monitor and “Cancel Timer” will cancel your shutdown request. Conclusion If you often find yourself falling asleep every night watching Media Center and then fumbling and stumbling in the middle of the night to shutdown your computer, MC7 Sleep timer might just be a perfect addition to your Media Center setup. • Friday Fun: Snow Crusher

  It has probably been a long week whether you have already returned to work or are finishing up the last of your vacation time. If you are in need of some stress relief, then we have we the perfect game for you. This week you get to be totally fiendish and use a monster size snowball to destroy as many cars as possible at the local snow lodge. Snow Crusher The object of the game is simple…create as large of a monster snowball as you can and then send it down over the side of the mountain to destroy the cars at the snow lodge. You can choose from three different sizes of monster snowballs to create. We chose the “Snowflake Size” for our reign of destruction. Once you have chosen a monster snowball size, all that is left to do is select the control method that works best for you. As soon as you select the control method, your monster snowball creation will automatically begin. Keep in mind that the faster your snowball goes the harder it can become to steer if you make sudden movements… At the top you can watch your progress towards the drop-off point and the green boxes highlighted at the bottom indicate how large of an item (such as trees or boulders) your snowball can roll over and add to the total mass. Snowball speed is shown in the lower right corner. Time to roll! As soon as the first green box is lit up you can start adding small trees to your snowball’s mass. You will want to avoid larger items as you go because they will penalize your score, slow you down, and reduce the size of your snowball! Halfway to the drop-off point and our snowball is now able to grab up larger trees. If you have not hit any large items along the way, your snowball will definitely be moving along at a good rate by now. When you reach the end of the mass building area, your snowball will pop out into the open and get ready to drop off over the side of the mountain. Go snowball go! Yes! Thirteen cars crushed and ready for the scrap yard… If the “Snowflake Size” snowball can do this, just think what the “Avalanche Size” can do with three minutes of time to build up mass! • Microsoft Desktop Player is a Valuable Tool for IT Pro’s

  If you are an IT Professional, a new education tool introduced by Microsoft is the MS Desktop Player. Today we take a look at what it has to offer, from Webcasts, White Papers, Training Videos, and more. Microsoft Desktop Player You can run the player from the website (shown here) or download the application for use on your local machine (link below). It allows you to easily access MS training and information in a central interface. To get the Desktop version, download the .msi file from the site… And run through the installer…   When you first start out, enter in if you’re an IT Pro, Developer and your role. Then you can decide on the resources you’re looking for such as Exchange Server, SharePoint, Windows 7, Security…etc. Here is an example of checking out a Podcast on Office 2007 setup and configuration from TechNet radio. Under Settings you can customize your search results and local resources. This helps you narrow down pertinent information for your needs. If you find something you really like, hover the pointer over the screen and you can add it to your library, share it, send feedback, and check for additional resources. If you don’t need items in your library they can be easily deleted. Under the News tab you get previews of Microsoft news items, clicking on it will open the full article in a separate browser. While you’re watching a presentation you can show or hide the details related to it. Conclusion Microsoft Desktop Player is currently in Beta, but has a lot of cool features to offer for your learning needs. You can easily find Podcasts, Webcasts, and more without having to browse all over the place. In our experience we didn’t notice any bugs, and what it offers so far works well. • StreamInsight 1.0 Released

  One piece in the set of products offered in SQL Server 2008 R2 that has generated a lot of buzz and interest during its CTP phase is StreamInsight, Microsoft’s platform for Complex Event Processing. Microsoft’s information platform vision provides enterprises with a “complete approach” to managing information assets, enabling all businesses to gain strategic value from information from the desktop to the datacenter to the cloud. And StreamInsight V1 is one essential piece in this spectrum. After more than a year of blood, sweat, tears, and insane amounts of coffee we are proud to release the first version of our Complex Event Processing Framework.   Those of you who have been following our Community Technology Previews (CTPs) throughout last year have already had the possibility to familiarize themselves with the product. Early feedback was not only incredibly positive, but also very constructive and strongly influenced the final feature set. Four notable increments over our last public CTP are: Count windows Non-occurrence detection (Anti-Join) Dynamic query composition at runtime Synchronize time across input streams Additionally, many smaller issues and bugs were addressed. A few APIs slightly changed with respect to the November CTP, but porting your application to RTM should not require a lot of effort.   Here are the (english) bits - choosing the evaluation license during setup lets you already play with this version. Before you install, make sure to uninstall any previous CTP version:   StreamInsight X86StreamInsight X64   Within a few days, we will update our product page and add download links and instructions there as well.   The StreamInsight documentation is provided through a help file as part of the installation as well as through Books Online on MSDN. • Opening cursor files in a graphics editor?

Is there an editor where these files can be opened - or at least a converter to something like .png? I can note that ImageMagick display also failed to open these files... Found also Gursor Maker - Cursor Editor for X11/GTK+; got the CVS code from SourceForge - it still uses Numeric (the old name of numpy), so to run it, you'll have to do: #from Numeric import * from numpy import * ... in xcurio.py, curxp.py, gimp.py, colorfunc.py - and comment the #from xml.dom.ext.reader import Sax2 in lsproj.py. With that, I got it running 11.04: ... but cannot get any files to open? So I thought I should grep for paths, nothing much came up - and when I looked into cursordefs.py, I simply had to paste this: CURSOR_ICON = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_xpm_data([ "10 16 3 1", " c None", ". c #000000", "+ c #FFFFFF", ".. ", ".+. ", ".++. ", ".+++. ", ".++++. ", ".+++++. ", ".++++++. ", ".+++++++. ", ".++++++++.", ".+++++....", ".++.++. ", ".+. .++. ", ".. .++. ", " .++. ", " .++. ", " .. "]) Heh :) In any case, doesn't look like it will be much usable on newer Ubuntus, unfortunately... Just tested XMC plugin as well - on 11.04, has to be built from source (from the link in the accepted answer); the requirements on my system resolved to: sudo apt-get install libgimp2.0-dev libglib2.0-0-dbg libglib2.0-0-refdbg libglib2.0-cil-dev libgtk2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-cil-dev ... after that, the configure/make procedure in the INSTALL file works. Note that this plugin is a bit "sneaky": ... that is, you should use "All files" (as there are no extensions); cursor previews at first will not be rendered. Then open one cursor file; after it has been opened, then there is a preview in the File/Open dialog; but other than that, it works fine...

• Destroyed user account on OS X with dscl; how to restore? [migrated]

  I was trying to create a new user on my OS X Lion machine, and somehow managed to destroy my own user's account. Here are the steps I took; hopefully someone here can recognize what I did, and maybe identify some way around this. First, I ran these commands: sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch /bin/bash # mistake! sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch UserShell /bin/bash sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch RealName "Elastic Search" sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch UniqueID 503 # MY uniqueID sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch PrimaryGroupID 1000 sudo dscl localhost -create /Local/Default/Users/elasticsearch NFSHomeDirectory /Local/Users/elasticsearch The big mistake I made here was using "503", which was my user's UniqueID. Immediately my shell username changed to "elasticsearch". I fiddled around, tried to change the current user with sudo su -u sritchie, but this didn't work. On restart, only the "Elastic Search" user was available. I logged into the Lion Recovery partition and reset the root password. After logging in as root and checking on the terminal, I made the remarkable discovery that my home folder was totally empty. I deleted the elasticsearch user, but it made no difference. I don't see anything in Deleted Users either. The odd thing is that when I log in now as myself (sritchie) I can see desktop icons with previews. I can even open a few text files from the Downloads folder if I use the dock alias to Downloads. Could this data be hiding somewhere? Any help would be REALLY appreciated! Thanks, Sam

• Windows 7 taskbar groups to use vertical menus only, not thumbnails?

  I frequently have 10 or more windows of the same application (e.g. Outlook, Word, IE, etc.) open at one time. Windows 7's new taskbar grouping thumbnail feature shows a preview of open windows (aka thumbnails) when you single-click on the taskbar group for that application. But when I have over 10 windows open (more thumbnails than will fit horizontally on my screen), Windows reverts to a vertical menu. This is disconcerting since I need to train myself to deal with two separate behaviors and can never anticipate what I'm going to see when I click on a taskbar group. Furthermore, I find the thumbnails more difficult to visually scan through (vs. the vertical menu) because only 1-2 words of each window's title are shown. Typically that's not enough text to disambiguate and help me find the right window. I'd like to force Windows 7's taskbar grouping to always show a vertical menu (like in XP) instead of sometimes showing thumbnail previews and sometimes showing a vertical menu. Anyone know how (whether?) this can be done? UPDATE: BTW, I'm running the RTM version (build 7600) of Windows 7. There are apparently other solutions out there which work on earlier builds, but which don't work on the RTM build.

• How to always show titles on Windows 7 Taskbar thumbail preview?

  I often use the Win+n shortcuts to 'alt-tab' between windows of pinned application (i.e. Win+2 to basically 'alt-tab' multiple putty windows, where putty is pinned as app #2 on the taskbar). The Win+n always pops up the thumbnail previews of all the windows, but sometimes it shows window titles above the thumbnail, sometimes it doesn't. Is there any way to always show the titles (i.e. registry setting?)? For putty sessions this would be especially nice, as the title contains the hostname, and the thumbnail is too small to determine what host that window is for. I've noticed that the titles usually show up with there are more than ~4-6 windows of that pinned item open - but the number seems to vary - is there a threshold setting for this? Update: So I just noticed the titles show up whenever the taskbar buttons combine, which varies based on how many windows from other apps are open... So I'm now looking for a way to combine buttons (but I'd like to keep labels, so the options in the 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' are close, but probably finding the registry settings behind should do it.

• Apache intermittently aborting requests

  I have just been dealing with a problem whereby http requests are being aborted, seemingly at random. On any particular page in the website, when you opened a page, a number of the assets (img, css, etc) failed to load. If you refreshed, the page may work fine, the same set of assets may fail to load or different assets may fail to load. The net tab in firefox was returning 'Aborted' in the HTTP status code column for the failed assets, even tho in the case of images, the image previews were still working. There was nothing in any of the apache logs about the requests that failed, however since it seemed to point to an apache issue, we restarted apache. The first time we tried, it made no difference but about 10 minutes later, in the absence of a better solution we tried again. Bizarrely, the problem disappeared immeadiately. So now the site seems to be running fine again but its rather unsettling, both the intermittent nature of the problem and the lack of an explanation for its resolution. Has anyone seen anything like this before and if so did you find out the reason behind it? Many Thanks
