  • Should root ever own files in my (linux) home directory?

    This question started off asking why my history file wasn't working properly. Then I noticed it was -rw------- 1 root root and hadn't been updated since 2012-09-11. I changed the ownership, problem fixed. But now I see some other files are owned by root: .gitconfig .pearrc .viminfo Can I safely change them to be owned by my normal user, not root? I'm scratching my head trying to work out if there is a downside, or a security consequence. Losing seven weeks history is actually quite painful, because I lean on it a lot (e.g. to remind how I last did an archive). Would it be reasonable to set up a cron job to email me if it finds any files in my home directory owned by anyone else but me? Rephrased: is there ever a good reason for root to own a file in my home directory?

  • Oracle Hangs on Responses Intermittently

    I want to preface this with the fact that I am a developer and I am not even close to a DBA, plus I am new to Oracle. OK, here it goes: I have a Java application which uses spring and hibernate. Its a simple CRUD app and I will leave the details out as I don't think they are the issue. I have noticed that my app runs fine when I use MySql, but when I use an Oracle 10.2 server every 7th-10th hangs for 5-10 seconds. My Oracle installation was done by me using all defaults, same as the mysql install. I don't even know where to start looking. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and sorry that I lack the details that are most likely required for help.

  • How can I have 2 users working on the same PC at the same time

    I have a pc/machine that has its own ip address and it can be connected to by certain external PC's through our firewall. User A has a RDP connection from say Germany directly to the PC - his ip number is allowed through our firewall to connect to the PC. He now wants User B to connect at the same time so that User B can see what User A is doing on the screen at the same time and maybe take over the screen to put his input in. I know that you cannot have 2 RDP connections at the same time but what would be the easiest solution to this. I want User A to keep his RDP connection, but I am unsure of what to suggest so that User B can see what is going on at the same time. The Users are not happy to use Real VNC, etc.

  • Connect Outlook to our Exchange Server 2003 over the Internet

    We have a one mail server here on site running Exchange 2003, however we are part of a large exchange group - there are some 10 outlook mail servers around the world and we are just one of the administratove groups. We can access email via OWA and I have checked our server and is a RPC-HTTP Back end server and RPC is installed. We can connect via VPN, on lan, and OWA but I cannot get it to work via the internet. Any suggestions

I'm speaking specifically to its operation rather than things like whether its enclosure is weather proof or not. And I'm also referring to the access point itself as opposed to the antenna used.

  • Give access to specific services on Windows 7 Professional machines?

    We have some machines running Windows 7 Professional at our office. The typical user needs to have access to stop and start a service for a local program they run. These machines have a local web server and database installed and we need to restrict access to certain folders and services related to the web server and database for these users. The setup I have tried so far is to add the typical user as a Power User. I have been able to successfully restrict them from accessing certain folders (as far as I can tell) but now they do not have access to the service needed for starting and stopping the local program. My thought was to give them access to the specific service but I have not had any luck yet. In searching the web for solutions the only results I have found relate to Windows Server 2000 and 2003 and involve creating security templates and databases through the Microsoft Management Console. I am hesitant to try an approach like this as these articles are typically older and I worry this method is outdated. Is there a better way to accomplish the end goal of giving the user permission to run the service and restrict their access to certain folders? If any clarification is needed on the setup or what we are trying to achieve, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    Need to dump an MPEG2 file in a loop, either to stdout or a named pipe. This works: $ { while : ; do cat myLoop.mpg; done; } | vlc - This works on a text file containing "1234\n": $ mkfifo myPipe $ cat test.txt > myPipe & < myPipe tee -a myPipe | cat - (it correctly loops, outputting "1234" on every line). Why does the following NOT work? $ cat myLoop.mpg > myPipe & < myPipe tee -a myPipe | vlc myPipe I'm primarily interested in re-writing the first statement to remove the improper "cat myLoop.mpg" statement. Will be inputting into VLC, or into FFMPEG and then piped into VLC.

  • Configure X connections over TCP without using an X connection

    I want to run a GUI application on a remote machine I only have ssh access to. I don't need to, or want to, see the GUI window. (I know I could use something like ssh -C -X remote_server if I wanted the GUI to be on my client.) I know X is running on the remote machine, as ps shows this: root ... /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 I set DISPLAY=:0.0 but I then get "Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server" when I try to use it. At Get remote x display working in linux without ssh tunneling and Xserver doesn't work unless DISPLAY=0.0 I see the advice to use gdmsetup to allow X to listen on TCP. But, gdmsetup is a GUI application! And trying to run it over ssh -X did not work ("X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication"). So, is there a text file I can edit to remove -nolisten? And, after editing it, how do I safely restart X, remotely? (There is other stuff running on this machine, so requesting a reboot is possible, but undesirable.) If not, should gdmsetup be able to run over ssh and I should persevere in that direction? UPDATE: I had to do the ssh -X session as root (ssh as a normal user, then sudo or su, does not work.) So, I did the edit with gdmsetup. I then restarted X with gdm-restart. I've also done xhost + from that ssh -X session. The ps line no longer shows the -nolisten tcp part. But still no luck connecting to it, with either DISPLAY=:0 or DISPLAY=localhost:0

  • How to move a Windows instance to a different EC2 data centre?

    I've a Windows EC2 instance running in one region and need to move it to another region (Tokyo and Singapore in this case). Is that even possible? What potential problems do I need to watch out for? (I found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2181849/ec2-instance-cloning which is describing how to do it, but appears to assume Linux instances, and to assume the same data centre. Is it possible to move my keys across to another region?) I tried something similar with a Windows instance a few months ago, just trying to clone it in the same data centre, but I couldn't get it working quickly, so I had to give up and just create a fresh instance at that time. This time I've got a bit of breathing space, and want to research how to do it properly! Root Device Type: ebs Block Devices: sda1 xvdf (both are ebs, "attached", and have Delete on termination set to "no"; sda1 is the root device) The AMI is described as "Unavailable" (then an ami number).

    I’m sorry for the long silence on this blog and the long delay in replying to the friends that commented on my articles. I’ve been quite busy in the last weeks and I spent a lot of time traveling around Italy (not for pleasure!). In the meantime I’ve been renewed as an MVP on April the 1st (nice date to renew someone with such a bad sense of humor…). I decided to celebrate my MVP award with a new recipe (to be honest, I celebrated by eating the results of this recipe!) and I decided to call it “penne alla MVP”… just because I’m not good in finding nice names for my recipes. Ingredients (for 4 people): 360g pasta (penne or other short pasta) 300g small shrimps 1 cup of whipped cream 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 small leek 1 glass of beer (I used Hoegaarden dutch white beer… but just because I like it and I finished the rest of the bootle while cooking) Chives Salt, pepper Prepare the pasta by boiling it in salted water, as usual. In the meantime chop the leek in very small bits, heat the oil inside a pan and when the oil is hot, drop the leek chops and let them cook for a few minutes. Add the shrimps and the glass of beer. Let them cook inside beer until they are cooked (if you used pre-cooked shrimps a couple of minutes would be enough to heat them and gave them the flavour of beer). Add the whipped cream and mix it well with the shrimps and the sauce. Dry the pasta and drop the sauce on top of it and then add the chives finely chopped.

    Being self-taught, the vast majority of what I know about programming has come from reading other peoples' code on websites like this. I'm starting to wonder if I've developed bad or otherwise pointless habits from other people, or even just made invalid assumptions. For example, in javascript, void 0 is used in a lot of places, and until I saw this, I just assumed it was necessary and that 0 had some significance. Also, the http header, referer is misspelled but hasn't been changed because it would break a lot of applications. Also mentioned in Code Complete 2: The architecture should describe the motivations for all major decisions. Be wary of “we’ve always done it that way” justifications. One story goes that Beth wanted to cook a pot roast according to an award-winning pot roast recipe handed down in her husband’s family. Her husband, Abdul, said that his mother had taught him to sprinkle it with salt and pepper, cut both ends off, put it in the pan, cover it, and cook it. Beth asked, “Why do you cut both ends off?” Abdul said, “I don’t know. I’ve always done it that way. Let me ask my mother.” He called her, and she said, “I don’t know. I’ve always done it that way. Let me ask your grandmother.” She called his grandmother, who said, “I don’t know why you do it that way.   • Facebook Graph API - authorization types?

    I'm struggling with the new Facebook Graph API, perhaps someone here can help. Here is what I want to do: provide a ‘login w/ FB’ button, throw to /authorize, get a code, throw to /access_token, get an access_token, and be able to hit https://graph.facebook.com/me for info about the user. When I try to use type=client_cred in the /authorize call, I get an access_token that lets me hit URLs with userIDs or names, but not /me. I receive an error stating I need a valid token. If I can't hit /me, how do I figure out who the current user is? What exactly should I use in the type param if I want a website to access a users data? I've seen posts with type=web_server, etc, but I can't seem to find a sure fire way to do, what I think, is pretty simple... Thanks ahead of time for any help thats provided...

  • Cookies not sent in WebBrowser? (C#, VS2008)

    Hi, I'm trying to add cookies to a webbrowser from a cookiecollection. I add them as they should be added but then they are not sent when the request is done. Here is the code I have done hitherto: public void myNav(string url, CookieCollection cc) { foreach (Cookie cook in cc) { webBrowser1.Document.Cookie = cook.ToString(); } this.webBrowser1.Navigate(url); Clipboard.SetText(webBrowser1.Document.Cookie); } If I copy the cookies to the clipboard they are sent correctly, but If I analyse the request with Wireshark they are not sent in the headers.     I'm attempting to use the new Graph API Facebook recently released, but I can't seem to get it to work correctly. I've gone through the steps, and after the /authorize call, I receive an access_token: access_token=109002049121898|nhKwSTJVPbUZ5JYyIH3opCBQMf8.   • “Could not create the file”, “Access is denied” and “Unrecoverable build error” in building setup project in VS 2008

    When building a setup project I get a message: Error with setup build: Error 27 Could not create the file 'C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp\VSI1E1A.tmp' 'Access is denied.' I have tried the following (from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329214/EN-US) regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSI Tools\mergemod.dll" The DLL registers but this does not fix my problem. Also, I tried a Clean build, deleting the temp folder, ran VS2008 as administratror, restart my PC but it occurs every time. I have no anti-virus software running and running on Windows 7 64-bit. This operation worked fine until recently. I have read many other users see this but found no solution. The only half solution I found was to edit setup properties and switch to Package files as Loose uncompressed files. This works but is not ideal as I need a full installer.

  • Why does xdebug crash apache on every XAMPP install I've tried?

    I've installed the Windows XAMPP package on three separate computers, 2 running Windows Vista 32 bit ( 1 Ultimate / 1 Home Premium ) and 1 running Windows Vista 64 Home Premium. After enabling xdebug in php.ini and restarting apache, viewing the default XAMPP localhost index causes apache to crash in the same way every time, reporting 'php_xdebug.dll' as the Fault Module Name.     I have a page based web method which works fine, using [WebMethod], i.e [WebMethod] public static void DoSomethingOnTheServer() { } I also have a custom page handler to make SEO friendly URLs possible, e.g http://localhost/MySite/A_nice_url.ext = http://localhost/MySite/page.aspx?id=1 I am using Server.Transfer in my ProcessRequest handler to achieve this. This all works fine. Also, my page method works fine when the user requests the URL such as: http://localhost/MySite/page.aspx?id=1 However, when the user requests the custom handled URL, i.e. http://localhost/MySite/A_nice_url.ext The client reports that the PageMethod has been successfully completed, but it has not been called at all. I'm guessing it has something to do with my custom handler, so I have modified it to include PathInfo: public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { // ... (code to determine id) ... // Transfer to the required page string actualPath = "~/page.aspx" + context.Request.PathInfo + "?id=" + determinedId; context.Server.Transfer(actualPath); } So now if a PageMethod is called, it will result in: http://localhost/MySite/page.aspx/DoSomethingOnTheServer?id=1 I'm wondering if this is the correct syntax for calling a PageMethod. When I try Server.Transfer reports: Error executing child request for /MySite/page.aspx/DoSomethingOnTheServer I've experimented with HttpContext.RewritePath but not sure how to actually make it perform the request. This does not seem to work, any ideas?

  • Why does std queue not define a swap method specialisation

    I've read that all stl containers provide a specialisation of the swap algorithm so as to avoid calling the copy constructor and two assignment operations that the default method uses. However, when I thought it would be nice to use a queue in some code I was working on I noticed that (unlike vector and deque) queue doesn't provide this method? I just decided to use a deque instead of a queue, but still I'm interested to know why this is?

  • url encoded forward slashes breaking my codeigniter app

    i’m trying to create a url string that works like this: /app/process/example.com/index.html so in other words, /app/process/$URL i then retrieve the url with $this->uri->segment(3); the forward slashes in the URL will of course be a problem accessing uri segments, so i’ll go ahead and url encode the URL portion: /app/process/example.com%2Findex.html .. but now I just get a 404 saying ... Not Found The requested URL /app/process/example.com/index.html was not found on this server. it appears that my url encoding of forward slashes breaks CI’s URI parser. what can i do to get around this problem?

  • Send asapMail without reloading page using ajax

    Hi, I have a form that posts data to an aspMail file for delivery (works fine in current format), but would like to have the form data sent without having to re-direct to another page. Looks like Ajax is the way to proceed but I'm having a problem getting the setup to work. Here's how I've changed the html: Added: $('#myForm').submit(function() { $.ajax({ data: $(this).serialize(), type: $(this).attr('post'), url: $(this).attr('aspSend.asp'), success: function(response) { $('#created').html(response) } }); }); Changed the form tag from: <form name="myForm" action"aspSend.asp"> to: <form name="myForm"> but now the emails don't arrive!! Any suggestions?

  • Determine if PowerShell function is running as part of a pipeline?

    Can a PowerShell function determine if it is being run as part of a pipeline? I have a function which populates an array with instances of FileInfo which I would like to "yield" to the pipeline if the function is being run this way or produce some pretty output if the function is being invoked by itself from the command line. function Do-Something { $file_infos = @() # Populate $file_infos with FileInfo instances... if (INVOKED_IN_PIPELINE) { return $file_infos } else { foreach ($file_info in $file_infos) { write-host -foregroundcolor yellow $file_info.fullname } } } Basically, I'm trying to figure out how to implement INVOKED_IN_PIPELINE. If it is run in a pipeline (e.g. Do-Something | format-table fullname), I would simply yield the array, but if run directly (e.g. Do-Something), it would simply pretty-print the output. Is there a way to do this? If there is a more "idiomatic" way to achieve this kind of thing, I would also be interested to know.

    Hi all, I have a method void foo(list<shared_ptr<Base>>& myList); Which I'm trying to call with a two different types of lists, one of DerivedClass1 and one of DerivedClass2 list<shared_ptr<DerivedClass1>> myList1; foo(myList1); list<shared_ptr<DerivedClass2>> myList2; foo(myList2); However this obviously generates a compiler error error: a reference of type "std::list<boost::shared_ptr<Base>, std::allocator<boost::shared_ptr<Base>>> &" (not const-qualified) cannot be initialized with a value of type "std::list<boost::shared_ptr<DerivedClass1>, std::allocator<boost::shared_ptr<DerivedClass1>>>" Is there any easy way to cast a container of shared_ptr? Of alternate containers that can accomplish this?
