• JMS Session pooling for large numbers of Topic subscribers

  I'm writing an app that will create lots of JMS topic subscribers. What is best practise regarding reusing sessions? A session per subscriber? A pool of sessions? With a session per subscriber the thread count seems unreasonable. Is this a job for something like a ServerSessionPool? What I've seen so far seems to suggest that ServerSessionPool is more geared towards one receiver consuming messages concurrently rather than lots of receivers. I'm currently working with HornetQ 2.0.0GA embedded in JBoss 4.3.0CP6.

• Using java classes in Grails

  I have a Java\Spring\Hibernate application - complete with domain classes which are basically Hibernate POJOs There is a piece of functionality that I think can be written well in Grails. I wish to reuse the domain classes that I have created in the main Java app What is the best way to do so ? Should I write new domain classes extending the Java classes ? this sounds tacky Or Can I 'generate' controllers off the Java domain classes ? What are the best practices around reusing Java domain objects in Grails\Groovy I am sure there must be others writing some pieces in grails\groovy If you know about a tutorial which talks about such an integration- that would be awesome !!! PS: I am quite a newbie in grails-groovy so may be missing the obvious. Thanks !!!

• Access to Apache::DBI from DBI

  Is it possible to access a Apache::DBI database handle from a perl script (that isn't running under mod_perl). What I am looking for is database pooling for my perl scripts, I have a fair number of database sources (oracle/mysql) and a growing number of scripts. Some ideas like SQLRelay, using Oracle10XE with database links and pooling, and or convert all scripts to SOAP calls, etc are becoming more and more viable. But if there was a mechanism for reusing Apache::DBI I could fight this a bit. I have no non-perl requirements, so we don't have a php/jdbc implementation or similar to deal with. Thanks

First, Should I add anything to my list? Should I remove anything from my list? The items accommodates a large number of cases. However, whenever an app extends a model of another in some way (e.g. adding a field or changing the behavior in some way) I end up writing my own views and only reusing the model. Is this normal?

• Drawbacks to using background-repeat only for colors?

  So I need some custom colors on a layout, but I'm looking for a better way of doing it other than just slapping a giant picture with (background: url(something.jpg)) in the layout. Mostly I'm thinking of getting a color palette (i.e. from Adobe Kuler, colourlovers, etc.), getting a 5x5 sample of each color and sticking them in an array for CSS sprites or just as separate files and accessing them through: .color-one {transparent url(./one.gif) repeat} and just reusing that whenever I'd like to use the color. Are there any drawbacks to doing it this way? And if there are should I just stick with web-safe colors or is there a better way of doing this?

But if I use code like loadedType = typeBuilder.CreateType(); myDelegate = (MyDelegate)Delegate.CreateDelegate( typeof(MyDelegate), methodBuilder); Reusing the methodBuilder as a methodInfo, I get the exception "MethodInfo must be a RuntimeMethodInfo". Now normally I can re-acquire the MethodInfo with MethodInfo mi = loadedType.GetMethod(methodBuilder.Name); myDelegate = (MyDelegate)Delegate.CreateDelegate(typeof(MyDelegate), mi); But my class may contain several overloaded methods with the same name. How do I make sure I get the right one? Do methods have some persistent identifier I could look up in loadedType?

• The difference between traditional DLL and COM DLL.

  I am currently studying COM. I found that COM DLL is kind of built upon the traditional DLL infrastructure. When we build COM DLLs, we still rely on the traditional DLL export methods to lead us to the internal COM co-classes. If COM is for component reusing at the binary level, I think the traditional DLL can achieve the same thing. They both expose functions, they are both binary, so what's the point of turning to COM approach? Currently, I have the feeling that the traditional DLL expose methods in a "flat" manner, while the COM DLL expose methods in an "OOP" hierarchy manner. And the OOP manner seems to be a better approach. Could this be the reason why COM prevails? Many thanks.

  When we set the CurrentCulture and/or CurrentUICulture we do this on the current thread like this: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("en-GB"); Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo("en-GB"); Doest this mean we could affect the culture settings of multiple users of our web application as their requests may reuse the threads from pool? I am working on an ASP.NET MVC application where each user may have own culture setting specified in his/her account data. When the user logs in, the culture setting is retrieved from the database and has to be set as current culture. My worry is that setting the current culture on the current thread may affect another user request reusing this thread. I am even more concerned reading this: ASP.NET not only uses a thread pool, but may switch threads during request processing.

• Custom jQuery dropdown

  I am creating a custom simple dropdown using jQuery that hides/shows a element based on over state. The problem I have now is that when you go over the shown element it hides, you cant move your mouse in to the dropdown that was created. Any thoughts on how to fix that also, is there an easier way to do what I have? • iOS6 MKMapView using a ton of memory, to the point of crashing the app, anyone else notice this?

  Has anyone else, who's using maps in their iOS 6 apps, noticing extremely high memory use to the point of receiving memory warnings over and over to the point of crashing the app? I've ran the app through instruments and I'm not seeing any leaks and until the map view is created the app consistently runs at around ~3mb Live Bytes. Once the map is created and the tiles are downloaded the Live Bytes jumps up to ~13mb Live Bytes. Then as I move the map around and zoom in and out the Live Bytes continuos to climb until the app crashes at around ~40mb Live Bytes. This is on an iPhone 4 by the way. On an iPod touch it crashes even earlier. I am reusing annotation views properly and nothing is leaking. Is anyone else seeing this same high memory usage with the new iOS 6 maps? Also, does anyone have a solution?

• WCF reuse types in referenced assemblies does not reuse the ServiceContract Interface

  I have three seperate projects: -MyUserControl (Needs a reference to a service implementing IMyService) -MyService (Implements IMyService) -MySharedInterfaces (IMyUserControl and IMyService) -MyWebApp The user control needs to be dynamically loaded at runtime. This implements IMyUserControl and has a property of type IMyService which will be set at runtime. The trouble is even with the option to reuse types the WebApp isn't reusing the IMyServiceType, it always generates it again from the Service Reference. This wouldn't be an issue if I could cast it to MySharedInterfaces.IMyService (which I can't understand, since it should be exactly the same). The user control is expecting something of type IMyService, is there anyway to either cast the WebServiceReference.IMyService back to MySharedInterface.IMyServiceReference or force the WebServiceReference to reuse the MySharedInterface.IMyServiceReference?   I have been tasked with building a new web project from scratch, with the exception of reusing CSS files (the look and feel) from an existing project. In the past I have always completed development of the functionality and the web-ui before considering the appearance. This is mostly due to CSS development overlapping with the tail end of the project. I now have the opportunity to integrate a static set of CSS as I build the application. I have no experience with this circumstance. Would it be faster to develop the project and web-pages first, then integrate the CSS; or would it be faster to integrate the CSS as part of page development?

• Visual Studio: What approach do you use to 'template' plumbing for similiar projects?

  When building ASP.NET projects there is a certain amount of boilerplate, or plumbing that needs to be done, which is often identical across projects. This is especially the case with MVC and ALT.NET approaches. [I'm thinking of things such as: IoC, ORM, Solution structure (projects), Session Management, User Management, I18n etc.] I would like to know what approach you find best for 'reusing' this plumbing accross projects? Have a 'master solution' which you duplicate and rename somehow? (I'm using a this to a degree at the moment, but it's fairly messy. Would be interested how people do this 'better') Mainly rely on Shared Library projects? (I find this appropriate for some things, but too restrictive for things that have to be customised) Code generation tools, such as T4? • Why should I reuse XmlHttpRequest objects?

  From what I understand, it's a best practice to reuse XmlHttpRequest objects whenever possible. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time understanding why. It seems like trying to reuse XHR objects can increase code complexity, introduce possible browser incompatibilities, and lead to other subtle bugs. After researching this question for a while, I did come up with a list of possible explanations: Fewer objects created means less garbage collecting Reusing XHR objects reduces the chance of memory leaks The overhead of creating a new XHR object is high The browser is able to perform some sort of network optimization under hood But I'm not sure if any of these reasons are actually valid. Any light you can shed on this question would be much appreciated.

  In WPF I have a few resource dictionaries and in them styles for my panels and controls in my app. I'm reusing the same colors again and again. I actually have 5 colors and they give my app a good color-scheme. However if I wan't to change the theme I have to go into the RD's and change each and every color there. I would like to somewhere have the colors set but don't know how or where. I tried to put a color tag in one RD but as soon as I referenced it in the same RD Visual Studio crashed. Also the best solution would be that I could have the color as a dynamic setting in the app itself so users could even change it themselves.

I need a C# code to draw charts (just outputting a bitmap is ok) of 2d (y=f(x)) and 3d (z=f(x,y)) digital data sets (where any axis can be float, int or datetime), sometimes combined. If I go here and click 3D in the navigation bar on the left, there I can see what I need. But the cheapest version costs $759 there, looks scary for a hobby project of an east-european student :-(

• Best way to do something when a runloop event is done processing?

  I have some processing in my Cocoa app that sometimes ends up calling through a hierarchy of data to do a bunch of work as the result of an event. Each small piece creates and destroys some resources. I don't want those resources around most of the time, but I would like to find a smart way of creating them before all the work and killing them at the end. Short of creating the resources up front and then passing them entirely down through the call hierarchy when work is done, is there a way to know locally in some code when an event loop run has ended? Then I could create them if they're not there, and keep them until the run loop ends, reusing them for any subsequent calls before that time. Thanks.

• Javascript: Passing large objects or strings between function considered a bad practice

  Is it considered a bad practice to pass around a large string or object (lets say from an ajax response) between functions? Would it be beneficial in any way save the response in a variable and keep reusing that variable? So in the code it would be something like this: var response; $.post(url, function(resp){ response = resp; }) function doSomething() { // do something with the response here } vs $.post(url, function(resp){ doSomething(resp); }) function doSomething(resp) { // do something with the resp here } Assume resp is a large object or string and it can be passed around between multiple functions.

• Swing Timer in Conjunction with Possible Long-running Background Task

  I need to perform a task repeatedly that affects both GUI-related and non GUI-related objects. One caveat is that no action should performed if the previous task had not completed when the next timer event is fired. My initial thoughts are to use a SwingTimer in conjunction with a javax.swing.SwingWorker object. The general setup would look like this. class { timer = new Timer(speed, this); timer.start(); public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { SwingWorker worker = new SwingWorker() { @Override public ImageIcon[] doInBackground() { // potential long running task } @Override public void done() { // update GUI on event dispatch thread when complete } } } Some potential issues I see with this approach are: 1) Multiple SwingWorkers will be active if a worker has not completed before the next ActionEvent is fired by the timer. 2) A SwingWorker is only designed to be executed once, so holding a reference to the worker and reusing (is not?) a viable option. Is there a better way to achieve this?

  Given a table that has three columns ID (Primary Key, not-autoincrementing) GroupID SomeValue I am trying to write a single SQL INSERT INTO statement that will make a copy of every row that has one GroupID into a new GroupID. Example beginning table: ID | GroupID | SomeValue ------------------------ 1 | 1 | a 2 | 1 | b Goal after I run a simple INSERT INTO statement: ID | GroupID | SomeValue ------------------------ 1 | 1 | a 2 | 1 | b 3 | 2 | a 4 | 2 | b I thought I could do something like: INSERT INTO MyTable ( [ID] ,[GroupID] ,[SomeValue] ) ( SELECT (SELECT MAX(ID) + 1 FROM MyTable) ,@NewGroupID ,[SomeValue] FROM MyTable WHERE ID = @OriginalGroupID ) This causes a PrimaryKey violation since it will end up reusing the same Max(ID)+1 value multiple times as it seems. Is my only recourse to a bunch of INSERT statements in a T-SQL WHILE statement that has an incrementing Counter value? I also don't have the option of turning the ID into an auto-incrementing Identity column since that would breaking code I don't have source for.

• Best place to store large amounts of session data

  I'm building an application that needs to store and re-use large amounts of data per session. So for example, the user selects a large list of list items (say 2000 or significantly more) which have a numeric value as their key then they save that selection and go off to another page, do something else and then come back to the original page and need to load their selections into that page. What is the quickest and most efficient way of storing and reusing that data? In a text file saved with the session id? In a temp db table? In the session data itself (db sessions so size isn't a limit) using a serialised string or using gzcompress or gzencode? Any advice or insight would be great! Thank you!!!!

  Is there a way in Objective-C to store an object/class in a variable to be passed to alloc/init somewhere else? For example: UIViewController = foo foo *bar = [[foo alloc] init] I'm trying to create a system to dynamically create navigation buttons in a separate class based on the current view controller. I can pass 'self' to the method, but the variable that results does not allow me to alloc/init. I could always import the .h file directly, but ideally I would like to make reusing the code as simple as possible. Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way?
