• AS3 - Loader class: Resize external swf to it's original stage size

  Hi there! Here is my problem (unfortunatelly didn't find solution @google): I'm loading external swf[AS2] into main swf[AS3] using Loader class. The main swf is 800 x 600 and the external swf is 300 x 200. After adding the external swf to the main swf the external swf expands it's size from 300 x 200 to the main swf's size: 800 x 600. How can i prevent this? I want the loaded swf to save it's original size. Cheers Rob

• MySQL query performance - 100Mb ethernet vs 1Gb ethernet

  Hi All I've just started a new job and noticed that the analysts computers are connected to the network at 100Mbps. The queries we run against the MySQL server can easily be 500MB+ and it seems at times when the servers are under high load the DBAs kill low priority jobs as they are taking too long to run. My question is this... How much of this server time is spent executing the request, and how much time is spent returning the data to the client? Could the query speeds be improved by upgrading the network connections to 1Gbps? Thanks Rob

• Crystal Reports Programmatic Image Resizing... Scale?

  I'm working with a Crystal Reports object in Visual Studio 2008 (C#). The report is building fine and the data is binding correctly. However, when I try to resize an IBlobFieldObject from within the source, the scale is getting skewed. Two notes about this scenario. Source image is 1024x768, my max width and height are 720x576. My math should be correct that my new image size will be 720x540 (to fit within the max width and height guidelines).   Here is a simplified version of what I'm trying to do: Without having multiple if..else clauses and switch blocks, can I mimic the behavior of Javascript's eval() shudder to instantiate a class in C#? // Determine report orientation -- Portrait or Landscape // There are 2 differently styled reports (beyond paper orientation) string reportType = "Portrait"; GenericReport report; report = new eval(reportType + "Report()"); // Resolves to PortraitReport() The need stems from the fact that I have 6 types of Crystal Reports (that do the same thing, but look drastically different) for 50 states. There are 3 styles each, rather than entertain the notion of a giant switch block with nested if..else statements determining which of 900 reports to use, I was hoping for an eval-like solution.

  I often write T-SQL loops that look like this While Exists (Select * From #MyTable) Begin Declare @ID int, @Word nvarchar(max) Select Top 1 @ID=ID, @Word=[Word] From #MyTable -- Do something -- Delete #MyTable Where ID=@ID End Works a treat but I noticed the new Delete Top function which would be useful when #MyTable is just a list of strings. In this case, would this work: While Exists (Select * From #MyTable) Begin Declare @Word nvarchar(max) Select Top 1 @Word=[Word] From #MyTable -- Do something -- Delete Top(1) #MyTable End Well yes, it works in my test script but is this safe?   Hi I need to assign a formatted date to a column in a data flow. I have added a Derived Column editor and entered the following expression: "BBD" + SUBSTRING((DT_WSTR,4)DATEADD("Day",30,GETDATE()),1,4) + SUBSTRING((DT_WSTR,2)DATEADD("Day",30,GETDATE()),6,2) + SUBSTRING((DT_WSTR,2)DATEADD("Day",30,GETDATE()),9,2) The problem is that the "Derived Column Transformation Editor" automatically assigns a Data Type of "Unicode string[DT_WSTR]" and a length of "7". Howver, the length of a string is 11, therefore the following exception is thrown each time: [Best Before Date [112]] Error: The "component "Best Before Date" (112)" failed because truncation occurred, and the truncation row disposition on "output column "Comments" (132)" specifies failure on truncation. A truncation error occurred on the specified object of the specified component. Does anyone know why the edit is insisting on a length of 7? I don't seem to be able to change this. Many thanks, Rob.

• c# HTTPListener encoding issue

  I have a Java application sending HTTP requests to a C# application. The C# app uses HTTPListener to listen for requests and respond. On the Java side I'm encoding the URL using UTF-8. When I send a \ character it gets encoded as %5C as expected but on the C# side it becomes a / character. The encoding for the request object is Windows-1252 which I think may be causing the problem. How do I set the default encoding to UTF-8? Currently I'm doing this to convert the encoding: foreach (string key in request.QueryString.Keys) { if (key != null) { byte[] sourceBytes =request.ContentEncoding.GetBytes(request.QueryString[key]); string value = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(sourceBytes)); } } This handles the non ASCII characters I'm also sending but doesn't fix the slash problem. Examining request.QueryString[key] in the debugger shows that the / is already there.

• VB .Net - Reflection: Reflected Method from a loaded Assembly executes before calling method. Why?

  When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it. It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text. • WPF application which calls an API, which needs a message pump

  I have a WPF application that calls an API to operate a device (a scanner). This API is COM based, and internally has a hidden window that the scanner sends messsages too. The intent of the API is to turn those windows messages into COM events. The problem is that the WPF application doesn't have a message pump, and therefore none of the messages are being delivered to the hidden window. Therefore none of the events are fired and it looks like the scanner is not responding. How should I create a message loop in the WPF application that will be able to dispatch messages to the invisible window?

• Android: How to restore List data when pressing the "back" button?

  Hi there, My question is about restoring complex activity related data when coming back to the activity using the "back" button". Activity A has a ListView which is connected to ArrayAdapter serving as its data source - this happens in onCreate(). By default, if I move to activity B and press "back" to get back to activity A, does my list stay intact with all the data or do I just get visual "copy" of the screen but the data is lost? What can I do when more than activities are involved? Let's say activity A starts activity B which starts activity C and then I press "back" twice to get to A. How do I ensure the integrity of the A's data when it gets back to the foreground? PrefsManager does not seem to handle complex object very intuitively. Thanks, Rob

• Machine learning in OCaml or Haskell?

  I'm hoping to use either Haskell or OCaml on a new project because R is too slow. I need to be able to use support vectory machines, ideally separating out each execution to run in parallel. I want to use a functional language and I have the feeling that these two are the best so far as performance and elegance are concerned (I like Clojure, but it wasn't as fast in a short test). I am leaning towards OCaml because there appears to be more support for integration with other languages so it could be a better fit in the long run (e.g. OCaml-R). Does anyone know of a good tutorial for this kind of analysis, or a code example, in either Haskell or OCaml?

• Automated payment notification with php

  I'm about to integrate automated payments into a site. To date, I've successfully used paypal for a number of projects, but these have always been sites which sell physical goods, meaning I can upload the cart contents, user pays, person physically ships goods. This site is a one off payment to enable extra features on a web app. My current thinking is to go down the paypal IPN route to get a notification back and update the users account based on the successful payment. Question is in two parts: 1 - is there a better / simpler way? (any payment processor considered) 2 - does anyone know of a code library or plug in for php which will speed up my integration? • Java Socket fails to transmit data over the network

  I'm experiencing a bizarre problem with sockets between a Java Knopflerfish client bundle and a PHP (CLI, not web) server. The client/server pair work fine when both are located on the localhost, and all data is transmitted successfully. However, when the Java client exists on a different machine, connections to the server are successful, but no data is received by the PHP script. Packet analysis confirms that the data sent by the Java client is received on by the server - PHP just seems to have problems getting its hands on it. As a further note, I've done some tests with telnet as the client. The PHP server script receives all data fine from any host. This leads me to believe that the problem has something to do with the way java is setting up the socket or that there is some networking issue that I'm not familiar with. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Can post code samples if desired.

SVN management (authz, web viewer, commit log, diff) Create template projects (1 click e.g. create me a microsite with this name in svn and give these people access) Reporting on code churn, time spent on tasks on a per project basis User story management Basically like Team Foundation Server but that integrates with SVN properly (reason for this - we have a wide range of skill sets and not everyone can use a TFS client). Is there a combination of Trac plugins + something that can create trac instances (a la Dreamhost's admin panel) that can acheive this. • Error in R for missing object

  I have several nested functions, some of which as called in lapply clauses. In the process, sometimes I don't set a default for a parameter and instead check if it was supplied using the missing function. I'm getting a strange error right now when I'm not passing a value for a parameter, it has no default, yet missing resolves to FALSE. And when I try to use or check the parameter in any other way (using length, exists, etc.), I get an error: Error in try(length(x)) : argument "data" is missing, with no default Has anyone experienced this failure of the missing function before?

• SSIS - Update flag of selected rows from more than one table

  Hi I have a SSIS package that copies data from table A to table B and sets a flag in table A so that the same data is not copied subsequently. This works great by using the following as the SQL command text on the ADO Net Source object: update transfer set ProcessDateTimeStamp = GetDate(), LastUpdatedBy = 'legacy processed' output inserted.* where LastUpdatedBy = 'legacy' and ProcessDateTimeStamp is not null The problem I have is that I need to run a similar data copy but from two sources table, joined on a primary / foreign key - select from table A join table B update flag in table A. I don't think I can use the technique above because I don't know where I'd put the join! Is there another way around this problem? Thanks Rob.

• Consuming WCF from BizTalk 2006r1

  Hi I need to create an Orchestration in BizTalk 2006r1 that will consume a WCF basicHTTP web service. Does anyone have a pointers on how to do this please? The WCF service has been created by another team but I am able to request that they create an additional endpoint with binding configuration set to make calling from BizTalk SOAP adapter possible. I just created a simple test basicHTTP service that runs fine when tested from a command line client. When I got to BizTalk add web reference I am able to browse to the service but then get a message "Failed to add web reference" and it bombs out! Any help gratefully received. Thanks Rob.

• Using C# with Crystal Reports, How Can I Create 4-Up Subreports?

  The simplest example that I can provide for what I want to do is this: I need to create a Report, whose only requirement is that I have (4) of the same subreport on the page (imagine 4 portrait-oriented post cards on a page), each quadrant using a separate row from my datatable, yet all 4 are identical in terms of fields. If there are more than 4, it needs to carry over to a new page with the same format. I'm using C# and the built-in Crystal Reports Basic for the task.
