  • Who practices, or is likely to practice, the IEEE Software Engineering? [closed]

    - by user72757
There is an interesting issue in Software Engineering which I'd like to explore. The issue is firstly what is and what is not software engineering. Secondly, if software engineering is what the IEEE defines it to be, what are good examples of companies which practice the SE? Detailed question: Software engineering (SE) is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the design, development, operation, and maintenance of software, and the study of these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software. [updated definition, originating in 610.12-1990 - IEEE Standard Glossary of Software Engineering Terminology] If we consider as SE only those approaches that 100% match the above definition, we naturally get to SWEBOK (Software Engineering Body of Knowledge) which is created by the IEEE and the ACM. I'm seeking the answer to this: How can I find a company outside the defence industry which practices the SE as defined by IEEE? Clues: SE originates in 1968 NATO conference. The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is based in the US at Carnegie Mellon University. Funding of the SEI is largely done by the US DoD. Defence industry uses the SE and sometimes has a partnership with the IEEE (as in case of Boeing). Possible decomposition of my big question into smaller chunks: a) Where is anyone who acknowledges the IEEE Software Engineering standards at work and perhaps even uses some of them? http://cs.hbg.psu.edu/cmpsc487/IEEEStds_List.htm b) Where can I find a person or a company building around SWEBOK? http://www.computer.org/portal/web/swebok/html/contents c) What is an example of a company professionally using CSDP (apart from those at IEEE website)? Does anyone have any possible contribution to this question?

  • Oracle IRM video demonstration of seperating duties of document security

    - by Simon Thorpe
One thing an Information Rights Management technology should do well is separate out three main areas of responsibility. The business process of defining and controlling the classifications to which content is secured and the definition of the roles employees, customers, partners and contractors have when accessing secured content. Allow IT to manage the server and perform the role of authorizing the creation of new classifications to meet business needs but yet once the classification has been created and handed off to the business, IT no longer plays a role on the ongoing management. Empower the business to take ownership of classifications to which their own content is secured. For example an employee who is leading an acquisition project should be responsible for defining who has access to confidential project documents. This person should be able to manage the rights users have in the classification and also be the point of contact for those wishing to gain rights. Oracle IRM has since it's creation in the late 1990's had this core model at the heart of its design. Due in part to the important seperation of rights from the documents themselves, Oracle IRM places the right functionality within the right parts of the business. For example some IRM technologies allow the end user to make decisions about what users can print, edit or save a secured document. This in practice results in a wide variety of content secured with a plethora of options that don't conform to any policy. With Oracle IRM users choose from a list of classifications to which they have been given the ability to secure information against. Their role in the classification was given to them by the business owner of the classification, yet the definition of the role resides within the realm of corporate security who own the overall business classification policies. It is this type of design and philosophy in Oracle IRM that makes it an enterprise solution that works beyond a few users and a few secured documents to hundreds of thousands of users and millions of documents. This following video shows how Oracle IRM 11g, the market leading document security solution, lets the security organization manage and create classifications whilst the business owns and manages them. If you want to experience using Oracle IRM secured content and the effects of different roles users have, why not sign up for our free demonstration.

  • How can I discourage the use of Access?

    - by Greg Buehler
Lets pretend that a very large company (revenue numbers with more than 8 figures) is looking to do a refresh on a software system, particularly the dashboard used by employees. This system was originally put together in the early 1990's to handle inventory tracking and storage across a variety of facilities (10+). Since this large company is now in the process of implementing some of these inventory processes with SAP they are in need of a major refresh. The existing system: Microsoft Access project performs dashboard duties Unique shipping/receiving configurations at different facilities require unique forms and queries within the Access project Uses 3rd party libraries referenced by Access to directly interface with at control system (read: motors, conveyors, and counters) Individual SQL Server 2000 instances (some traces of pre-update SQL Server 6.0 documents) at each facility The Issue: This system started as a home brewed inventory tracking scheme with a single internal sponsor who is still in charge of the technical direction. The original sponsor prescribing the desired deliverables that are being called for in the current RFP. The RFP describes a system based around a single Access project. Any suggestion that Access is ill suited for a project of this scope are shot down under the reasoning that "it works for the scope now". Are there any case studies, notices, or statements that can be used to disuade this potential customer from repeating their mistake? Does Microsoft make any statements directly about when it is highly recommended to ditch Access?

  • Code base migration - old versioning system to modern

    - by JohnP
Our current code base is contained in a versioning system that is old and outdated (Visual Sourcesafe 5.0, mid 1990's), and contains a mix of packages that are no longer used, ones that are being used but no longer updated, and newer code. It is also a mix of 4 languages, and includes libraries for some of our systems (Such as Dialogic, Sun Tzu {clipper}) implementations. This breaks down into the following categories: Legacy code - No longer used (Systems that have been retired or replaced, etc) Legacy code - In current use (No intentions for upgrades or minor bug fixes, only major fixes if needed) Current code - In current use, and will be used for future versions/development Support libraries - For both legacy and current code (Some of the legacy libraries are no longer available as well) We would like to migrate this to a newer versioning system as we will be adding more developers, and expanding the reach to include remote programmers. When migrating, how do you structure it? Do you just perform a dump of all the data and then import it into the new system, or do you segregate according to type before you bring it into the new system? Do you set up a separate area for libraries, or keep them with the relevant packages? Do you separate by language, system, both? A general outline and methodology is fine, it doesn't need to be broken down to individual program level.

  • ArchBeat Link-o-Rama for November 6, 2012

    - by Bob Rhubart
OAM/OVD JVM Tuning | @FusionSecExpert Vinay from the Oracle Fusion Middleware Architecture Group (the infamous A-Team) shares a process for analyzing and improving performance in Oracle Virtual Directory and Oracle Access Manager. Architects Matter: Making sense of the people who make sense of enterprise IT Why do architects matter? Oracle Enterprise Architect Eric Stephens suggests that you ask yourself that question the next time you take the elevator to the Oracle offices on the 45th floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois (or any other skyscraper, for that matter). If you had to take the stairs to get to those offices, who would you blame? "You get the picture," he says. "Architecture is essential for any necessarily complex structure, be it a building or an enterprise." (Read the article...) • Why doesn't my Nvidia driver support 1280*1024?

    - by Alvar
EDIT: I think the problem is in the NVIDIA x server, that doesn't support an RGB screen from 1990. The screen was the best of them all when it was released. This a strange thing! In windows the EDID must work because 1280*1024 is used as max resolution, but in ubuntu those stuff aren't being received, so how do I tell ubuntu/nivida to find those EDID stuff? Hi, I have an external monitor which is an 20" 1280*1024. In windows 7 it works fine with that resolution but in ubuntu it can't. The screens model name is IntelliColor Display/20 and the name of the company is "radius".recived Well, twin view is working but the only maximum resolution is 1024*768. I'm using nividas x server program. If I force it to use 1280*1024 it all crashes and I have to force a reboot. alvar@alvars-laptop:~$ disper -l display DFP-0: HSD121PHW1 resolutions: 320x175, 320x200, 360x200, 320x240, 400x300, 416x312, 512x384, 640x350, 576x432, 640x400, 680x384, 720x400, 640x480, 720x450, 640x512, 700x525, 800x512, 840x525, 800x600, 960x540, 832x624, 1024x768, 1366x768 display CRT-0: CRT-0 resolutions: 320x240, 400x300, 512x384, 680x384, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, 1360x768

  • Error on /home prevents OS boot

    - by mdrg
Ok, I'll try to explain it listing the events: motherboard battery is weak, loses config everytime I shut the PC down; system clock usually back to 1990-something; this time, it went up to 2148; ubuntu became somewhat unusable (firefox refusing certificates, dropbox blocked), so I restarted; manually set the clock to current date and restarted; during boot, ubuntu detects errors and start auto-fix, rebooting itself in the middle of it (like a hard reboot, no shutdown messages) next time, shows boot animation screen in text mode, with an error message after a while: "Errors were found while checking the disk drive or /home", with "attempt to fix, ignore, skip mounting or manual recovery" None of the options during the boot work, they just type the text to the screen, then I'm forced to physically restart. Now I'm using Mint LXDE live CD, and I can see all my partitions just fine, including /home (my home folder blocked due to encryption, the other user folder is accessible and everything in place). I'm not sure how to proceed now. I'd like to just fix ubuntu boot without reinstalling or anything like it (at least until 12.04). What should I do now? can I easily fix this somewhow? Thanks!

  • Cancel UITouch Events When View Covered By Modal UIViewController

    - by kkrizka
Hi there, I am writing an application where the user has to move some stuff on the screen using his fingers and drop them. To do this, I am using the touchesBegan,touchesEnded... function of each view that has to be moved. The problem is that sometimes the views are covered by a view displayed using the [UIViewController presentModalViewController] function. As soon as that happens, the UIView that I was moving stops receiving the touch events, since it was covered up. But there is no event telling me that it stopped receiving the events, so I can reset the state of the moved view. The following is an example that demonstrates this. The functions are part of a UIView that is being shown in the main window. It listens to touch events and when I drag the finger for some distance, it presents a modal view that covers everything. In the Run Log, it prints what touch events are received. - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"touchesBegan"); touchStart=[[touches anyObject] locationInView:self]; } - (void)touchesMoved:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { CGPoint touchAt=[[touches anyObject] locationInView:self]; float xx=(touchAt.x-touchStart.x)*(touchAt.x-touchStart.x); float yy=(touchAt.y-touchStart.y)*(touchAt.y-touchStart.y); float rr=xx+yy; NSLog(@"touchesMoved %f",rr); if(rr > 100) { NSLog(@"Show modal"); [viewController presentModalViewController:[UIViewController new] animated:NO]; } } - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"touchesEnded"); } - (void)touchesCancelled:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"touchesCancelled"); } But when I test the application and trigger the modal dialog to be displayed, the following is the output in the Run Log. [Session started at 2010-03-27 16:17:14 -0700.] 2010-03-27 16:17:18.831 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesBegan 2010-03-27 16:17:19.485 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 2.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.504 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 4.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.523 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 16.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.538 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 26.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.596 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 68.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.624 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 85.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.640 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] touchesMoved 125.000000 2010-03-27 16:17:19.641 modelTouchCancel[2594:207] Show modal Any suggestions on how to reset the state of a UIView when its touch events are interrupted by a modal view?

  • Correct permutation cycle for Verhoeff algorithm

    - by James
Hello, I'm implementing the Verhoeff algorithm for a check digit scheme, but there seems to be some disagreement in web sources as to which permutation cycle should form the basis of the permutation table. Wikipedia uses: (36)(01589427) while apparently, Numerical Recipies uses a different cycle and this book uses: (0)(14)(23)(56789), quoted from a 1990 article by Winters. It also notes that Verhoeff used the one Wikipedia quotes. Now, my number theory is a little rusty, but the Wikipedia cycle clearly will repeat after the 8th power, while the book one will take 10, despite it saying that s^8=s. Table 2.14(b) has other errors in the 2-cycles, so this is dubious anyway. Unfortunately, I don't have copies of the original articles (and am too tight to pay/disgusted that 40-year old knowledge is still being held to ransom by publishers), nor a copy of Numerical Recipes to check (and am loath to install their paranoia-induced copy protection plug-in to view online). So does any one know which is correct? Are they both correct?

  • Where are the new languages?

    - by Johnson William
Most now mainstream/popular (interpreted|scripting) programming languages were created around the 1990's. (Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP just to name a few). How many people knew about those languages around 1-2 years after they had been first published? Are there languages with potential of becoming as important as e.g.: Python or PHP being developed at the moment? I mean ... is there someone even seriously trying to create a new one? If the first version of a programming language is published and nearly nobody knows about it, as it was with all the languages I've mentioned above, where could I find out? Is there some sort of "list" or "network" dealing just with non-language-specific news? Is the area where Perl, Python, Ruby and PHP fit in already fully covered? Do you know of concrete examples of new programming languages being seriously developed or rising at the moment? (Except Google's go!)

Thanks in advance. <!doctype html> <html> <head> <style> #canvas{ border:red dashed #ccc; } </style> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery.min.js"></script> <script> $(function(){ var canvas=document.getElementById("canvas"),ctx=canvas.getContext("2d"),canvasOffset=$("#canvas").offset(); var offsetX=canvasOffset.left,offsetY=canvasOffset.top,startX,startY,isDown=false,pi2=Math.PI*2; var resizerRadius=8,rr=resizerRadius*resizerRadius,draggingResizer={x:0,y:0},imageX=50,imageY=50; var imageWidth,imageHeight,imageRight,imageBottom,draggingImage=false,startX,startY,doRotation=false; var r=0,rotImg = new Image(); rotImg.src="rotation.jpg"; var img=new Image(); img.onload=function(){ imageWidth=img.width; imageHeight=img.height; imageRight=imageX+imageWidth; imageBottom=imageY+imageHeight; w=img.width/2; h=img.height/2; draw(true,false); } img.src="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/139992952/stackoverflow/facesSmall.png"; function draw(withAnchors,withBorders){ ctx.fillStyle="black"; ctx.clearRect(0,0,canvas.width,canvas.height); ctx.save(); ctx.translate(imageX,imageY); ctx.translate(imageWidth/2,imageHeight/2); ctx.rotate(r); ctx.translate(-imageX,-imageY); ctx.translate(-imageWidth/2,-imageHeight/2); ctx.drawImage(img,0,0,img.width,img.height,imageX,imageY,imageWidth,imageHeight); ctx.restore(); if(withAnchors){ drawDragAnchor(imageX,imageY); drawDragAnchor(imageRight,imageY); drawDragAnchor(imageRight,imageBottom); drawDragAnchor(imageX,imageBottom); } if(withBorders){ ctx.save(); ctx.translate(imageX,imageY); ctx.translate(imageWidth/2,imageHeight/2); ctx.rotate(r); ctx.translate(-imageX,-imageY); ctx.translate(-imageWidth/2,-imageHeight/2); ctx.beginPath(); ctx.moveTo(imageX,imageY); ctx.lineTo(imageRight,imageY); ctx.lineTo(imageRight,imageBottom); ctx.lineTo(imageX,imageBottom); ctx.closePath(); ctx.stroke(); ctx.restore(); } ctx.fillStyle="blue"; ctx.save(); ctx.translate(imageX,imageY); ctx.translate(imageWidth/2,imageHeight/2); ctx.rotate(r); ctx.translate(-imageX,-imageY); ctx.translate(-imageWidth/2,-imageHeight/2); ctx.beginPath(); ctx.moveTo(imageRight+15,imageY-10); ctx.lineTo(imageRight+45,imageY-10); ctx.lineTo(imageRight+45,imageY+20); ctx.lineTo(imageRight+15,imageY+20); ctx.fill(); ctx.closePath(); ctx.restore(); } function drawDragAnchor(x,y){ ctx.save(); ctx.translate(imageX,imageY); ctx.translate(imageWidth/2,imageHeight/2); ctx.rotate(r); ctx.translate(-imageX,-imageY); ctx.translate(-imageWidth/2,-imageHeight/2); ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc(x,y,resizerRadius,0,pi2,false); ctx.closePath(); ctx.fill(); ctx.restore(); } function anchorHitTest(x,y){ var dx,dy; dx=x-imageX; dy=y-imageY; if(dx*dx+dy*dy<=rr){ return(0); } // top-right dx=x-imageRight; dy=y-imageY; if(dx*dx+dy*dy<=rr){ return(1); } // bottom-right dx=x-imageRight; dy=y-imageBottom; if(dx*dx+dy*dy<=rr){ return(2); } // bottom-left dx=x-imageX; dy=y-imageBottom; if(dx*dx+dy*dy<=rr){ return(3); } return(-1); } function hitImage(x,y){ return(x>imageX && x<imageX+imageWidth && y>imageY && y<imageY+imageHeight); } function handleMouseDown(e){ startX=parseInt(e.clientX-offsetX); startY=parseInt(e.clientY-offsetY); draggingResizer= anchorHitTest(startX,startY); draggingImage= draggingResizer<0 && hitImage(startX,startY); doRotation = draggingResizer<0 && !draggingImage && ctx.isPointInPath(startX,startY); } function handleMouseUp(e){ draggingResizer=-1; draggingImage=false; doRotation=false; draw(true,false); } function handleMouseOut(e){ handleMouseUp(e); } function handleMouseMove(e){ mouseX=parseInt(e.clientX-offsetX); mouseY=parseInt(e.clientY-offsetY); if(draggingResizer>-1){ switch(draggingResizer){ case 0: //top-left imageX=mouseX; imageWidth=imageRight-mouseX; imageY=mouseY; imageHeight=imageBottom-mouseY; break; case 1: //top-right imageY=mouseY; imageWidth=mouseX-imageX; imageHeight=imageBottom-mouseY; break; case 2: //bottom-right imageWidth=mouseX-imageX; imageHeight=mouseY-imageY; break; case 3: //bottom-left imageX=mouseX; imageWidth=imageRight-mouseX; imageHeight=mouseY-imageY; break; } if(imageWidth<25) imageWidth=25; if(imageHeight<25) imageHeight=25; imageRight=imageX+imageWidth; imageBottom=imageY+imageHeight; draw(true,true); }else if(draggingImage){ imageClick=false; var dx=mouseX-startX; var dy=mouseY-startY; imageX+=dx; imageY+=dy; imageRight+=dx; imageBottom+=dy; startX=mouseX; startY=mouseY; draw(false,true); }else if(doRotation){ var dx=mouseX-imageX; var dy=mouseY-imageY; r=Math.atan2(dy,dx); draw(false,true); } } $("#canvas").mousedown(function(e){handleMouseDown(e);}); $("#canvas").mousemove(function(e){handleMouseMove(e);}); $("#canvas").mouseup(function(e){handleMouseUp(e);}); $("#canvas").mouseout(function(e){handleMouseOut(e);}); }); </script> </head> <body> <canvas id="canvas" width=800 height=500></canvas> </body> </html>

  • Is it practical to learn and use Forth?

    - by Workshop Alex
When I was still a young developer, I started to focus on the many available programming languages. But in 1980 to 1990 there weren't many freely available compilers. So I started with several BASIC dialects for home computers, Pascal and C on my PC, I did an exam in COBOL and dabbled a bit in Assembly and a few other languages. And at one point I took a short look at Forth. That's over 20 years ago and I've learned a lot ever since. I know that Forth is still used these days. It's still a good programming language but since I focus mostly on Windows development, I just wonder if knowing Forth could be helpful for future projects of mine. So, would it be practical for an experienced developer to learn more about Forth?

  • PUT parameters not working in python / google app engine

    - by magegu
hi, i'm working on a simple RESTful webservice with python with the webapp framework on the google app engine. Basically i'm sending all request via AJAX/jquery - for POST it works like a charm, but when I'm sending data with PUT, the parameters are empty / not processed. this is my PUT: $.ajax({ type: "PUT", url: "/boxes", data: { name: this.name, archived: this.archived }, success: function(msg){ } }); firebug saids i'm putting: Parameter application/x-www-form-urlencoded archived false name 123112323asdasd but using this python code: from google.appengine.ext import webapp from google.appengine.ext.webapp import util, template from google.appengine.ext import db from google.appengine.api.datastore_types import * from django.utils import simplejson as json import cgi import datetime class BoxHandler(webapp.RequestHandler): def post(self): #working print "test" self.response.out.write(self.request.get("name")) def put(self): print "test" #not working self.response.out.write(self.request.get("name")) will just return test Status: 200 OK Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Cache-Control: no-cache Expires: Fri, 01 Jan 1990 00:00:00 GMT Content-Length: 0 so .. hm, is there anything i'm missing here? cheers, Martin

  • Why hasn't functional programming taken over yet?

    - by pankrax
I've read some texts about declarative/functional programming (languages), tried out Haskell as well as written one myself. From what I've seen, functional programming has several advantages over the classical imperative style: Stateless programs; No side effects Concurrency; Plays extremely nice with the rising multi-core technology Programs are usually shorter and in some cases easier to read Productivity goes up (example: Erlang) Imperative programming is a very old paradigm (as far as I know) and possibly not suitable for the 21st century Why are companies using or programs written in functional languages still so "rare"? Why, when looking at the advantages of functional programming, are we still using imperative programming languages? Maybe it was too early for it in 1990, but today?

  • C# How to create objects without class definitions?

    - by JL
Is it possible to create objects at designtime without having to have hard coded class definitions, then populate properties with primitives or even strongly typed data types? This might sound confusing, so I will attempt to give you a use case scenario. Use case: You have an XML config file that could hold configuration values for connecting to various systems in an SOA application. In C# the XML file is read, but for each system the configuration properties are different (e.g: SQL might have a connection string, while SharePoint might need a username + password + domain + url, while yet an smtp server would need username + password + port + url) So instead of creating static classes as follows public class SharePointConfiguration or public class SQLConfiguration, then have each class with custom properties (this is cumbersome) or using a 1990's method, an arrayList or some named collection Is there not a more preferred way to achieve this? Taking advantage of new language features, that can still offer design time intellisense, which would make the code easier to maintain and less prone to error. Thanks

  • How would I go about writing a Linux TTY sniffer?

    - by alienate
For educational purposes (not that anyone should care the motivations behind such an exercise) I'd like to write a program that can read/write to/from alternate tty/pty's. I've read papers (from the 1990's) but can't employ the implementation they use, on modern UNIXes. I was hoping that someone had researched into this in the past, or at least, read documentation pertaining to it, that they could provide. I also wonder if (considering the fact that Linux doesn't have STREAMs) if this exercise must be done via a loadable kernel module? I have many questions and probably a misunderstanding of some of the fundamental ideologies that allow such objectives to be put in place, could someone help? :)

  • Library for Dataflow in C

    - by msutherl
How can I do dataflow (pipes and filters, stream processing, flow based) in C? And not with UNIX pipes. I recently came across stream.py. Streams are iterables with a pipelining mechanism to enable data-flow programming and easy parallelization. The idea is to take the output of a function that turns an iterable into another iterable and plug that as the input of another such function. While you can already do this using function composition, this package provides an elegant notation for it by overloading the operator. I would like to duplicate a simple version of this kind of functionality in C. I particularly like the overloading of the operator to avoid function composition mess. Wikipedia points to this hint from a Usenet post in 1990. Why C? Because I would like to be able to do this on microcontrollers and in C extensions for other high level languages (Max, Pd*, Python). * (ironic given that Max and Pd were written, in C, specifically for this purpose – I'm looking for something barebones)

  • What is the accepted way to replace java.util.Date(year,month,day)

    - by dagw
I'm trying to do something really simple, but starting to realize that dates in Java are a bit of minefield. All I want is to get passed groups of three ints ( a year, a month and a date) create some Date objects, do some simple test on them (along the lines of as date A before date B and after January 1 1990), convert them to java.sql.Date objects and pass them off to the database via JDBC. All very simple and works fine using the java.util.Date(int year, int month, int day) constructor. Of course that constructor is depreciated, and I'd like to avoid using depreciated calls in new code I'm writing. However all the other options to solve this simple problem seem stupidly complicated. Is there really no simple way to do what I want without using depreciated constructors? I know the standard answer to all Java date related questions is "use joda time", but I really don't want to start pulling in third party libraries for such a seemingly trivial problem.

  • mysql phpmyadmin, how to save date of birth that was attained through a form with the input type "se

    - by newbie-25
Hello, I have a form which asks the user his or her date of birth. Its a drop down box since I use the select input type. The first drop down has Months, second has Days, the third has the Years. So the format should be Month(October), Day(25), Year(1990). In other words the months spell out the actual month and not simply the number representation of the month. However, I would like to save the Day and Year in their respective formats. How can I do this in phpMyAdmin? Should I use the DATE type? what should the value be? I just need to know how to correlate all of this in phpmyadmin, so I can save it properly. Thank you.

  • Multiple data centers and HTTP traffic: DNS Round Robin is the ONLY way to assure instant fail-over?

    - by vmiazzo
Hi, Multiple A records pointing to the same domain seem to be used almost exclusively to implement DNS Round Robin as a cheap load balancing technique. The usual warning against DNS RR is that it is not good for high availability. When 1 IP goes down clients will continue to use it for minutes. A load balancer is often suggested as a better choice. Both claims are not completely true: When the traffic is HTTP then, most of the HTML browsers are able to automatically try the next A record if the previous is down, without a new DNS look-up. Read here chapter 3.1 and here. When multiple data centers are involved then, DNS RR is the only option to distribute traffic across them. So, is it true that, with multiple data centers and HTTP traffic, the use of DNS RR is the ONLY way to assure instant fail-over when one data center goes down? Thanks, Valentino Edit: Off course each data center has a local Load Balancer with hot spare. It's OK to sacrifice session affinity for an instant fail-over. AFAIK the only way for a DNS to suggest a data center instead of another is to reply with just the IP (or IPs) associated to that data center. If the data center becomes unreachable then all those IP are also unreachables. This means that, even if smart HTML browsers are able to instantly try another A record , all the attempts will fail until the local cache entry expires and a new DNS lookup is done, fetching the new working IPs (I assume DNS automatically suggests to a new data center when one fail). So, "smart DNS" cannot assure instant fail-over. Conversely a DNS round-robin permits it. When one data center fail, the smart HTML browsers (most of them) instantly try the other cached A records jumping to another (working) data center. So, DNS round-robin doesn't assure session affinity or the lowest RTT but seems to be the only way to assure instant fail-over when the clients are "smart" HTML browsers. Edit 2: Some people suggest TCP Anycast as a definitive solution. In this paper (chapter 6) is explained that Anycast fail-over is related to BGP convergence. For this reason Anycast can employ from 15 minutes to 20 seconds to complete. 20 seconds are possible on networks where the topology was optimized for this. Probably just CDN operators can grant such fast fail-overs. Edit 3:* I did some DNS look-ups and traceroutes (maybe some expert can double check) and: The only CDN using TCP Anycast seems to be CacheFly, other operators like CDN networks and BitGravity use CacheFly. Seems that their edges cannot be used as reverse proxies. Therefore, they cannot be used to grant instant failover. Akamai and LimeLight seems to use geo-aware DNS. But! They return multiple A records. From traceroutes seems that the returned IPs are on the same data center. So, I'm puzzled on how they can offer a 100% SLA when one data center goes down.
