    I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on an old Compaq C300. I want to use it to share my movies over lan so that the rest of my family can watch without hi-jacking my pc. I installed samba and shared the Public folder under the Home folder of my user account. But I can only access this folder from my Win 7 pc when I am logged in. If I log out or restart without logging in then I cannot access the shared folder. I am used to the Windows service that starts at boot making shared files available over the network before the user has logged in. How can I accomplish this in Ubuntu?

    I'm having trouble deploying .NET application which uses Microsoft Access automation. I've installed the Access 2007 Runtime and Primary Interop Assemblies (PIAs) on the target machine: Access 2007 Runtime Office 2007 PIAs However, when I try to create the ApplicationClass: Application access = new ApplicationClass(); I get the following exception: Unhandled Exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80080005): Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {73A4C9C1-D68D-11D0-98BF-00A0C90DC8D9} failed due to the following error: 80080005. I've googled the error code and tried tweaking the security settings in dcomcnfg, to no avail. Any ideas? I don't want to install the full version of Access due to the cost, and the runtime should at least be able to create an instance of the application, surely?

    I have been tasked with moving an existing MS Access application (mdb) over to an Access Data Project (adp). Basically the Access forms will remain the same but the data will be migrated over to SQL Server. I am not too familiar with Access Data Projects so I was hoping I could get some opinions on the pros and cons of using them. My first thought was to convert this to a web application or even a Winform application, however I really wanted to perform due dilligence in looking at Access Data Projects before making a decision.     Through the normal processes I enter my shared music folder on my Windows computer, i.e.: Places Network Windows pc Music. After rebooting my Ubuntu laptop, however, this connection isn't automatically set again. My question: How do I get Ubuntu to automatically connect to that shared folder after login (while first checking whether the Windows computer is 'online')? This because I added the folder to the Banshee Library, and I currently first have to go to the shared folder manually before Banshee can play the files.

    I am able to build the shared object successfully using the holy native compiler "xlc" on AIX.It does build the shared object library but does not install the shared object library. Configure command is: ./configure --prefix=/PATH/to/install --exec-prefix=/PATH/to/install --enable-shared --enable-static=no --enable-module=so --build=powerpc-ibm-aix5.3.0.0 --host=powerpc-ibm-aix5.3.0.0 LDFLAGS="-G -shared" Any help would be appreciated?

  • Methodologies for Managing Users and Access?

    This is something I'm having a hard time getting my head around. I think I might be making it more complicated than it is. What I'm trying to do is develop a method to store users in a database with varying levels of access, throughout different applications. I know this has been done before, but I don't know where to find how they did it. Here is an example of what I need to accomplish: UserA - Access to App1, App3, App4 & can add new users to App3, but not 4 or 1. UserB - Access to App2 only with ReadOnly access. UserC - Access to App1 & App4 and is able to access Admin settings of both apps. In the past I've just used user groups. However, I'm reaching a phase where I need a bit more control over each individual user's access to certain parts of the different applications. I wish this were as cut and dry as being able to give a user a role and let each role inherit from the last. Now, this is what I need to accomplish. But, I don't know any methods of doing this. I could easily just design something that works, but I know this has been done and I know this has been studied and I know this problem has been solved by much better minds than my own. This is for a web application and using sql server 2008. I don't need to store passwords (LDAP) and the information I need to store is actually very limited. Basically just username and access.

    I'm just learning about creating custom ribbons in Access 2010, but I'm running into an issue. The Access application I'm working with is connected to a SQL Server backend (connected, not just linked tables). As I understand it, the USysRibbons table needs to exist in the Access application itself, and not in a connected SQL Server. How does one go about creating a table in an Access application that is already linked to a SQL Server? I tried creating the table in a blank database and then importing it into the Access application without any luck.

    Hi, I am using LINQ to SQL for the DataAccess layer. I have similar business objects to what is in the data access layer. I have got the dataprovider getting the message #23. On instantiation of the message, in the message constructor, it gets the MessageType and makes a new instance of MessageType class and fills in the MessageType information from the database. Therefore; I want this to get the Name of the MessageType of the Message. user.Messages[23].MessageType.Name I also want an administrator to set the MessageType user.Messages[23].MessageType = MessageTypes.LoadType(3); but I don't want the user to publicly set the MessageType.Name. But when I make a new MessageType instance, the access modifier for the Name property is public because I want to set that from an external class (my data access layer). I could change this to property to internal, so that my class can access it like a public variable, and not allow my other application access to modify it. This still doesn't feel right as it seems like a public property. Are public access modifiers in this situation bad? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    We are using PHP 5.3.6 here, but we used the --without-sqlite3 command when compiling PHP. (It stands in the 'Configure Command' column). But, it is very risky to recompile PHP on that server; there are many visitors. How can we install/use sqlite3?   • AWStats: cannot access /var/log/apache2/access.log

    I installed awstats on my new Ubuntu Lucid server, but when cron tries to run it as user www-data, it complains that cannot access /var/log/apache2/access.log: Permission denied. In /usr/share/doc/awstats/README.Debian there's this paragraph: By default Apache stores (since version 1.3.22-1) logfiles with uid=root and gid=adm, so you need to either... 1) Change the rights of the logfiles in /etc/logrotate.d/apache so that www-data has at least read access. 2) As 1) but change to a specific user, and use the suEXEC feature of Apache to run as same user (and either change the right of /var/lib/awstats as well or use another directory). This is more complicated, but then the logs are not generally accessible to the server (which was probably the point of the Apache default). 3) Change awstats.pl to group adm (but beware that you are then taking the risk of allowing a CGI-script access to admin stuff on the machine!). I'd go with 1, but what are the recommended permissions to grant?

  • Getting kernel errors when manually mounting VirtualBox shared folders

    Updated: I've rephrased this problem as I understand it a bit more now (and have encountered another problem). I'm using a Fedora 15 guest on a Windows 7 host using VirtualBox. I am trying to mount a partition on the host PC as a shared folder for use in the guest. The folder appears in /media and is accessible when I use the auto-mount feature when setting up the shared folder, but when I attempt to mount without auto-mount I get the following error: $ sudo mount.vboxsf data /mnt/host_data /sbin/mount.vboxsf: Could not add an entry to the mount table.: Invalid argument In addition a popup appears (part of Fedora/GNOME) reporting a crash in the kernel package: WARNING: at lib/list_debug.c:26 __list_add+0x3e/0x81() However the shared folder seems to work, I can certainly browse it (although everything seems to be executable, probably down to a Windows host). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing or is this a bug (and in which case should it be reported to the Linux Kernel team or VirtualBox)?

    Hey folks, I am providing web hosting services (shared and dedicated) and have had one of my shared hosting clients mention needing an SSL cert for their site where they are collecting insurance quotes in a form, including names and social security numbers. My privacy sense is tingling, and I'm pretty sure it's not legal (in the US) to do this on a shared system, but can't find anything to support my thoughts outside of PCI-DSS, but the customer isn't processing payments through the site so I'm not sure if that applies. I'm reading lots of policy documents where people advise to minimize and manage the PII footprint internally, but as the host I don't want to put all of my customer's clients at possible risk. I'm not looking here for legal advice necessarily, but perhaps someone in a similar position to mine can provide some rule of thumb or point me in the right direction.

  • 12.04 WiFi issue on a particular access point

    I have a WiFi access point that I connect to a PC to share its Internet connection with multiple machines, in a training environment. All the machines with 11.04 connect to this access point with no problem, and can access any server on the Internet. These machines have an Intel Wireless -N 1030 BGN chipset (as reported by lspci). Now, my problem is that I don't manage to connect 12.04 machines to this wireless network. The systems I tried do manage to connect (confirmed by Network Manager), but when I try to access a website like http://kernel.org, the browser shows "Connecting to kernel.org...", but displays a "The connection has timed out" error page. Other symptoms: Name resolution works (for example 'nslookup kernel.org') finds kernel.org's IP address 'ping kernel.org' doesn't work The same 12.04 machines have no problem at all with other wireless networks. So there is probably something weird in my access point (though the 11.04 machines are not impacted). Would you have any suggestions for investigating this issue? Thanks, Michael.

    I have an Access 2003 database that connects to a SQL Server 2008 box via ODBC. The tables from SQL Server are connected as linked tables in Access. I have a stored procedure on the SQL Server that I am trying to execute via ADO code. The problem I have is that Access cannot seem to find the procedure. What do I have to do within Access to be able to execute this stored procedure? Some facts ... The stored procedure in question accepts one parameter which is an integer. The stored procedure returns a recordset which I am hoping to use as the datasource for a ListBox. Here is my ADO code in Access ...   • Apache2 random 403 error & info server busy logs on Ubuntu

    Hello, I have a strange situation with apache2. Meanless, random 403 errors. Any page (html, php etc.) normally working. but if i request repeatedly by pressing refresh button of browser. it interrupts & sends a 403 randomly. after a few seconds it works again. in the error log, i see client denied by server configuration. main error log of apache says [info] server seems busy, (you may need to increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 8 children, there are 99 idle, and 137 total children my current values IfModule mpm_prefork_module StartServers 120 MinSpareServers 100 MaxSpareServers 200 MaxClients 256 MaxRequestsPerChild 500 /IfModule i've increased 10 by 10. from 20. but nothing solved. i've disabled KeepAlive. What may cause this problem ? thank you in advance. a fresh install Ubuntu server x86 8.04.4 Virtualmin from it's website (not from debian repositories). This post will outline the plan changes and elaborate on how the new pricing model makes Windows Azure Web Sites an even richer option for web development shops of all sizes. PHP, Node.js, classic ASP, and ASP.NET developers can all utilize the Windows Azure platform to create and launch their web sites. Likewise, these developers have a series of data storage options using Windows Azure SQL Databases, MySQL, or Windows Azure Storage. The Windows Azure Web Sites free offer enabled startups to get their site up and running on Windows Azure with a minimal investment, and with multiple deployment and continuous integration features such as Git, Team Foundation Services, FTP, and Web Deploy.  The response to the Windows Azure Web Sites offer has been overwhelmingly positive. Since the addition of the service on June 12th, tens of thousands of web sites have been deployed to Windows Azure and the volume of adoption is increasing every week. Preview Feedback In spite of the growth and success of the product, the community has had questions about features lacking in the free preview offer. The main question web developers asked regarding Windows Azure Web Sites relates to the lack of the free offer’s support for domain name mapping. During the preview launch period, customer feedback made it obvious that the lack of domain name mapping support was an area of concern. We’re happy to announce that this #1 request has been delivered as a feature of the new shared plan. New Shared Tier Portal Features In the screen shot below, the “Scale” tab in the portal shows the new tiers – Free, Shared, and Reserved – and gives the user the ability to quickly move any of their free web sites into the shared tier. With a single mouse-click, the user can move their site into the shared tier. Once a site has been moved into the shared tier, a new Manage Domains button appears in the bottom action bar of the Windows Azure Portal giving site owners the ability to manage their domain names for a shared site. This button brings up the domain-management dialog, which can be used to enter in a specific domain name that will be mapped to the Windows Azure Web Site. Shared Tier Benefits Startups and large web agencies will both benefit from this plan change. Here are a few examples of scenarios which fit the new pricing model: Startups no longer have to select the reserved plan to map domain names to their sites. Instead, they can use the free option to develop their sites and choose on a site-by-site basis which sites they elect to move into the shared plan, paying only for the sites that are finished and ready to be domain-mapped Agencies who manage dozens of sites will realize a lower cost of ownership over the long term by moving their sites into reserved mode. Once multi-site companies reach a certain price point in the shared tier, it is much more cost-effective to move sites to a reserved tier.  Long-term, it’s easy to see how the new Windows Azure Web Sites shared pricing tier makes Windows Azure Web Sites it a great choice for both startups and agency customers, as it enables rapid growth and upgrades while keeping the cost to a minimum. Large agencies will be able to have all of their sites in their own instances, and startups will have the capability to scale up to multiple-shared instances for minimal cost and eventually move to reserved instances without worrying about the need to incur continually additional costs.   • Splitting MS Access Database - Front End Part Location

    One of the best practices as specified by Microsoft for Access Development is splitting Access application into 2 parts; Front End that hold all the object except tables and the Back End that holds the tables. The msdn page links there to the article Splitting Microsoft Access Databases to Improve Performance and Simplify Maintainability that describes the process in details. It is recommended that in multi user environment the Back End is stored on the server/shared folder while the Front End is distributed to each user. That implies that each time there are any changes made to the front end they need to be deployed to every user machine. My question is: Assuming that the users themselves do not have rights to modify the Front End part of the application what would be the drawbacks/dangers of leaving this on the server as well next to the Back End copy? I can see the performance issues here, but are there any dangers here like possible corruptions etc? Thank you EDIT Just to clarify, the scenario specified in question assumes one Front End stored on the server and shared by users. I understand that the recommendation is to have FE deployed to each user machine, but my question is more about what are the dangers if that is not done. E.g. when you are given an existing solution that uses the approach of both FE and BE on the server. Assuming the the performance is acceptable and the customer is reluctant to change the approach would you still push the change? And why exactly? For example the danger of possible data corruption would definitely be the strong enough argument, but is that the case?
