  • What do you do to get your software design robust, flexible and clear?

    I am still getting mature as a software engineering/designer/architect, as you may want to call. At this point in time, I am getting small projects, private projects and so on. What I noticed is that even though I think about the SW structure, design some diagrams, have they really clear in my mind when I start coding, at the end, my software is not flexible and clear as I would like to. I would like to ask you what kind of approaches, mechanisms or even tricks do you use, to get your software (and SW design) flexible, robust and clear (easy to understand and use). So.... Any ideas to give to a beginner?

  • Does it matter to you that a software is "available source" but not "open source"

    You probably know the list of open source licenses officially approved by the OSI. Most notably I guess would be the GPL, MIT, [insert your favorite license here]. I recently ran into a project which although was open source (the creator made all source code available), was not officially open source under one of those official licenses. It released the source, but made no promise to release the source in the future. It allowed modification suggestions, but made no promises to accept patches and disallowed external distribution of externally-patched versions. It allowed the use of the software in commercial or paid projects, but disallowed the sale of the software itself. I suppose it could be called "available source" not open source as we like to think of it. I can see why the management team of a company wouldn't want to do business with this software. They can't fork it, they can't sell it, they can't create their own version of the software and distribute it or sell it. But would it matter to you as part of a software engineering team who's just using this software? I can still get my work done with it, I can use it in a project for which I'm paid (but I can't sell the software itself, which I'm not in the business of doing anyway), and I can make changes to the code to make it behave differently for my needs (but I can't make those modifications public), and if I do want those modifications officially made available to others, the approval is up to the project itself and they choose whether to incorporate them in an official release or not. So we know that a company that wants to base its business on this "available source" software can't do that, but as someone from the software engineering team, would those differences matter to you or do they seem less relevant? Curious what others think of this.

    I'm having difficulty trying to install/uninstall applications in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have this warning error that appears on my desktop in the form of a red icon with a line through it and it states: An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Error: BrokenCount 0' — This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies. I tried to repair automatically through ubuntu software center and I kept getting errors or it just didn't seem to work. Afterwards, I opened terminal and used sudo apt-get check command to see what the problem was and the results yielded: Reading package lists...   • Install Shield 2009 Premier, Uninstall doesn't close the process/gui

    My application (developed using C#.net) is open now i uninstall, InstallShield gives message stating the application is already open and whether really want to close the application. Selection 'Ignore' continues uninstall. Some files and the exe of the application are not closed. How to close them by installshield on uninstall. Or there are some properties I have to set. I know adding a custom action at uninstall i can kill the process, but shouldn't installshield do it?

    I was having some problem with Software center. So tried to reinstall it. But While removing it give me an error. (Reading database ... 150986 files and directories currently installed.)     I know that Ubuntu has come a long way in helping new users to get used to their linux system..and making things as easy as possible. One most important aspect is installing and uninstalling applications in ubuntu. Thanks to Ubuntu Software Center it is a breeze! However I noticed that when I compiled and installed a game from its source (battleship), it does not appear under the history tab in the Ubuntu Software Center. And also you cannot uninstall it through the software center but have to resort to the command line to do this. I do not mind doing it however I am sure some other users might not be comfortable with this. Is this a bug?

    When I try to install "ubuntu restricted extras" in "ubuntu software center", it displays a warning dialog that says the following items must be removed: libavcodec53 libavutil51 Why? And if I choose to install "ubuntu restricted extras", what will I lose? PS: I think I noticed libavcodec53 flash past as my daily build of codeblocks package was installing... so that's one possibility. Will I break my software development environment if I install "ubuntu restricted extras"? Or do these packages need to be removed because they are included in "ubuntu restricted extras"? If so, why doesn't the dialog mention that (and remove the worry and confusion)? PS: The output generated by "apt-get -s install ubuntu-restricted-extras" is HERE.

  • How to uninstall AMD Display Driver from other install of Windows

    So my Windows 7 had a BSOD from an Ati driver file then restarting only gives me some wierd coloured lines at the top of the screen. Starting in safe mode causes the boot up to freeze at AtiPcie.sys and overlays the same coloured lines on the safe mode start up display. It seems to be a problem with the display driver but I can't get into the OS at all to uninstall it. Luckily I have an old install of Windows 7 from when I moved to a SSD still on my HDD and that runs just fine so I'm pretty sure its a software problem (Maybe the SSD corrupted a driver file or something). So does anyone know how I can uninstall the driver files from another Windows 7 install on the same PC? EDIT: What I mean is, I'm running on the broken PC right now but using a different HDD's windows install. I have full access to the not booting up OS drive with the Windows so I can delete any files/load the registry etc...

    I've been hunting for a clean way to uninstall an MSOffice security update on a large number of workstations. I've found some awkward solutions, but nothing as clean or general like using PowerShell and get-wmiobject with Win32_QuickFixEngineering and the .Uninstall method on the resulting object. [Apparently, Win32_QuickFixEngineering only refers to Windows patches. See: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverpowershell/thread/93cc0731-5a99-4698-b1d4-8476b3140aa3 ] Question 1: Is there no way to use get-wmiobject to find MSOffice updates? There are so many classes and namespaces, I have to wonder. This particualar Office update (KB978382) can be found in the registry here (for Office Ultimate): HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{91120000-002E-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}_ULTIMATER_{6DE3DABF-0203-426B-B330-7287D1003E86} which kindly shows the uninstall command of: msiexec /package {91120000-002E-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} /uninstall {6DE3DABF-0203-426B-B330-7287D1003E86} and the last GUID seems constant between different versions of Office. I've also found the update like this: $wu = new-object -com "Microsoft.Update.Searcher" $wu.QueryHistory(0,$wu.GetTotalHistoryCount()) | where {$_.Title -match "KB978382"} I like this search because it doesn't require any poking around in the registry, but: Question 2: If I've found it like this, what can I do with the found information to facilitate the Uninstall?     I upgraded to 12.04 LTS and ran Software Center while a few things were running, and crashed. (2 GB RAM on a Netbook.) On reboot, Ubuntu One interface would not find any programs, neither installed (to run) nor available for download. So I launched Software Center, which opens, but does nothing. I click "Close" button and get a "Force Quit?" box. So I quit. Did research, learned to run Software Center from Terminal: 2012-04-29 23:14:36,978 - softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file Then tried the below without success: Reinstallation of software center: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center Didn't work. Found this in a post: remove the config file for software-center then log out and back in sudo rm -rf ~/.config/software-center Didn't work. Reinstalled Software Center with Synaptic Package Manager. Still no dice! And I am a Linux newbie, so I don't know where the Dickens that config file is. Help appreciated.

    I need to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from my laptop. It's currently dual booting with windows 7. I've searched and found some ways to do this, but all use some kind of a CD to complete the deletion. I have neither the Ubuntu Live CD nor Windows Install CD/Recovery CD. This laptop did not come with one, and I unfortunately have no available storage device to make a recovery CD. Is there a way to completely uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual booting without using any hardware? If there's no way, then how to uninstall using the least hardware possible? Or easy to find hardware? I've nothing against Ubuntu. I installed this as a backup/alternative to error-prone Windows 7. However, after a hardware upgrade, including extra RAMs and a new, better CPU, Windows 7 runs smoothly again. Now I'm running low on hard drive space and need the 40 gig or so of space I partitioned for Ubuntu back. Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    *Why this question is not a duplicate of the questions specified as such: I did not ask if there was a license that restricted specific uses and I did not ask if I could rewrite every line of any open source project. I asked very specifically: "Does there exist X? If not, can I Y with Z?". As far as I can tell, the two questions that were specified as duplicates do not answer my specific question. Please remove the duplicate status placed on the question. I'm developing some software that I would like to be "semi" open source. I would like to allow for anyone to use my software/source unless they are using the software/source for certain purposes. For example, I don't want to allow usage of the software/source if it is being used to create, distribute, view or otherwise support pornography, illegal purposes, etc. I'm no lawyer and couldn't ever hope to write a license myself nor do I have to time to figure how to best do this. My question is this: Does there exist a freely available license or a template for a license that I can use to license my software under they conditions explained above just like one can use the Creative Commons licenses? If not, am I allowed to just alter one of Creative Commons licenses to meet my needs?

This question goes out to those of you who may be using such software professionally. My daughter recently graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, and needs to put together an animation portfolio in order to interest employers in the field. As you know, such software is usually provided by the employer and the costs are high - several thousand dollars. I suggested that she investigate Ubuntu as a possible way to acquire the tools she needs.   • How do I remove Skype 4.3 from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32-bit)

    I installed Skype on my nephew's new Ubuntu 14.04 LTS machine, and now we've decided to remove it. But I'm not able to locate it in my Installed programs section of Ubuntu Software Center. I'm able to call it up by opening the debian package, Software Center opens it up, but where I would normally see the "Remove" button, I have a "Reinstall" button. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to uninstall Skype. Any suggestions? In case you're wondering I used the version of Skype designed for 12.xx, as there was no option available for Ubuntu 14.xx.

    I've installed a trial of Adobe Flash CS4 (i didn't use this trial till the end) and wrongly entered the expired license number. I ran uninstall and tried to install a trial version again. Seems, that it keeps somewhere the wrong serial number and each time i run the Flash application it alerts me, that the license has expired. How do i properly install the trial?     I've got a dual-boot system using Windows 7 and Linux Mint 13. When I first installed Mint using the regular Mint installer, the installer did not give me the option of partitioning my drive, presumably because my computer already had 4 partitions. I decided that I wanted to uninstall Mint and opt for Ubuntu instead, but I have no idea how to remove Mint! Every guide I look at tells me to just delete/reformat the Linux partition... But in my case, no separate partition exists.

  • Can't uninstall trial version of Expression Blend 3, error writing to file Config.msi

    I can not remove a trial version of MS Expression Blend 3 from my pc. I am always getting the same error: "Error writing to C:\Config.msi\6e6288.rbf." The name of the file varies. On the error message window there are two buttons: "Retry" and "Cancel", but clicking on any of them gives the same result - uninstall is cancelled and everything is rolling back. I tried to change access permissions to that folder in many ways, but result all the same.
